Daniel & Lucy Marshall Drury

Descendents of Holland Drury have long wondered if he was a child of Daniel and Lucy Marshall Drury. While visiting the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City I read the transcripts of Edwin Drury (of Willamette, ILL)who wrote the Drury/Heald genealogies. He wrote many letter to cousins running down the descendants. Among those was a letter to LaFayette Parker whose wife Lucy K. Drury was a cousin, and daughter of Daniel and Lucy Drury. I did not find a response, but investigating Lucy K. found the following.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Rock County, Wisconsin, Containing Full Page Portraits And Biographical Sketches Of Prominent And Representative Citizens Of The County, Together With Portraits And Biographies Of All The Governors Of The State, And Of The Presidents Of The United States.
(Acme Publishing Company, Chicago, IL, 1889), pp. 849-850.

LaFayette Parker, deceased, was born in Richmond, Vt., September 10, 1817, and died at his home in Racine, November 14, 1885,...In Richmond, Vt., he married Lucy M. Drury, the wedding being celebrated January 1, 1838. The lady was born in Highgate, Vt., October 1, 182O, and is a daughter of Daniel and Lucy M. (Marshall) Drury, natives of Rutland and Poultney, Vt., respectively. The father was a machinist by occupation and died when Mrs. Parker was but ten years of age. In the family were twelve children but she is the only one now living.
In 1841, Mr. Parker and his wife, travelling by way of the lakes, came to Racine. ... He attended and supported the Congregational Church, of which Mrs. Parker is still a member... Although Mr. And Mrs. Parker never had any children of their own they adopted two girls, one an orphan, Harriet N., who is now the wife of H. E. Rounds, editor and proprietor of the Rogers Park (Ill.) News. The other is now Mrs. Carrie Coulter, of Colorado.

Of the twelve children of Daniel and Lucy Drury mentioned above five were noted in the 1820 VT census: a daughter 16-26, two girls under 10 and two boys under 10. Given Daniel and Lucy married in 1801, there were probably other children born between 1801 and 1810 who did not survive.

I have identified two of these children:

Marshall Scott Drury b. 1810 and living in Rochester NY in 1840 and 1850.

Calista b. 1806 who married Hezekiah Bruce living in Sheldon, VT in 1850. There second son is named Hezekiah Marshall Bruce. They also were members of the Congregationalist Church.

Lucy K. was born 10OCT1820 after the census was taken and Holland was born in 1823.

That leaves five children unaccounted for. Another possibility is Thankful Scott Drury b. Tiaconderoga, 1807 and married a Blair in Malone, NY. However, This may be a cousin of Lucy K. rather than a sister. More research is needed.

Another point of interest is that a Rebecca Drury is mentioned In the 1883 History of Fairfield and Perry County, OH as a member of the New Zion Methodist Church on the Somerset Circuit. Also members were Mahlon S. Gregg and Emily Gregg -- Holland Drury's in-laws. Who is Rebecca? More research is needed.

Michael Drury

Hi, Karen

Thanks for your reply. I don't have much on the Drewry's.

I'm fairly certain William Drewry's (b 1810 Hatfield) parents were William Drewry and Martha Machin, as William Drewry junior and Mary Rushby named one of their daughters, Martha Machin Drewery.

I think William Drewery senior was baptised 1772, son of John and Mary Drewry. A John Drewry married a Mary Arnold in 1753 in Hatfield, but there aren't any other births on IGI.

Regards

Olwen

Hi Olwen,
At this stage I am stuck on our line this far back. I know that Septimus Drury's father was John Drury (1800)m Mary Wilson (1804) and his father was James Drury (Drewry)apparently changed the spelling at some point, the story goes for mail reasons. I have James married to a Rebecca. I am still trying to find out John's and James facts. There is a fair chance we are linked. I would love to share what we can and maybe between us we might stumble on linage. I have found 1 relative in England and can share their line. I need to send for Johns marriage cert, maybe this may help me to get a bit more info. But Drury's seem like Smiths. Its a very common name. We had Johns wife wrong at one stage. But eventually found the correct info on later day saints. You can write to me direct at karendrury622hotmail.com if you would like. If we are linked you have an enormous line in Australia.
karen

Hi,

I've got a William Drewry born 1810 in Hatfield to William Drewry and Martha Machin. William junior married Mary Rushby in 1833 in Doncaster and had at least 6 children there. I don't know if he's related to your Drewrys.

My interest is in the Rushby family from Doncaster.

Regards

Olwen
Canberra

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for your observations/sugestions. I can answer some of the them now:

1 - what do Fredericks other initials "E C" stand for? Middle names are often carried down though families, so might give a clue. That would be an unusual set of initials, so 'should' help.

Fredericks middle names are Ernest Charles. These are not shown any birth indexs that I have seen. They only appear on his marriage certificate. As you say they should help when going through the census reports.

2 - what is Mark Drury's occupation, as given on Frederick's marriage certificate? If he is the one married to Catherine Friend/Davison then he should (according to their entry on the 1901 census) be a 'carpenter'.

According to Frederick's Marriage Certificate Mark Drury was a Pig Dealer. I have seen the 1901 census entry that you refer to. So in that context I cannot link my Frederick Drury to that Mark Drury and Catherine Friend. ( Maybe he sold pigs as extra income:).

3 - I guess Frederick was just too young to get called up for military service in WW1, otherwise his service record would name his next-of-kin.

According to his marriage certificate Frederick was serving as a Private in "The Buffs" and was living in Barracks at the time of marriage. A cousin of mine has visited Kew to check out the military records side but with no luck It appears that his maybe one of those lost. But I do hold out hope because according to the national archive website all personnel serving in the military after 1921 will have their records still kept the MOD. At the moment the MOD is considering whether to release the records of personal who have served up to WWII, to Kew.

4 - Did Frederick have any brothers or sisters? Sometimes their connections might turn out easier to verify. Again, from the 1901 census, if his mother was Catherine Friend, she had 2 children (Frances & Arthur) from her first marriage. They would be Frederick's step-brother and sister. You would hope family tales might have mentioned them.

I don't know of any brother or sisters of frederick. My dad certainly never mentioned them to me. The cousins that I am in contact with seem to know as much as me. Zero.
But we are a very fractured family and there is always hope that a lost relation might read this and provide the clues that we need.

5 - Finally, hopefully later this year we should all get access to most of the 1911 census - that should give you a much clearer answer.

I am looking forward to the occasion. Hope there isnt going to be a melt down like the last time.

Anyway Nigel many thanks for your comments. They have given me food for thoughts.

Darrell

He was married to Louisa Kate Williams.

I have tried to find my granddads Birth cert and have a found a possibility.
Hi Lesley
Thanks for the info on Drury's. So far the ones I know about are from Wiltshire and its possible that the Mother's name was Drury and the Father was Daniel Browne ( not confirmed )all I do know for sure is that my Richard Drury father was named Daniel ? Comfirmed on marriage certificate. Richard was born circa 1858 Gloucs.and named Browne but have no idea why he changed to Drury.
Any help is gratefully recieved.
Kay

1 - Initials - thats a shame. I followed the Mark (of Mark & Catherine) back to his grandparents (father also Mark, living in Brede, Kent, 1851;grandparents Thomas Drury of Brooklands, Kent and Marth Swaine) and there's no Ernest or Charles to be seen.
2 - Nonetheless, so far this seems the most likely )on age, location at least). Between 1901 and 1921 Mark could easily have changed his occupation. His father was an Ag Lab in 1851.
3 - Military service. You can purchase his service record from MoD (30 pounds though). I have obtained a couple like that. Details and application forms are at http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records....

4 - 1911 census - you're in luck. Official release for most counties (including Kent) is tomorrow. It's not going to be cheap, and they are putting search restrictions on designed to avoid the melt-down of the 1901.

Del

There's a couple of things that might help:

1 - what do Fredericks other initials "E C" stand for? Middle names are often carried down though families, so might give a clue. That would be an unusual set of initials, so 'should' help.

2 - what is Mark Drury's occupation, as given on Frederick's marriage certificate? If he is the one married to Catherine Friend/Davison then he should (according to their entry on the 1901 census) be a 'carpenter'.

3 - I guess Frederick was just too young to get called up for military service in WW1, otherwise his service record would name his next-of-kin.

4 - Did Frederick have any brothers or sisters?
Karen Hi,
I have just read your posts and the replies with interest. My 4x great grandfather was James Drewry. I have a full family tree for his descendants but all I know of him was that he married Elizabeth Coates 25/11/1802 in South Cave Yorkshire (which isn't too far from your geographical areas of interest). If it is the same one as you have (brother to John) then the age would be about right. I am on Genes and would welcome any contacts as I have hit a stone wall, the only way to progress is to go and look at the marriage record as it just might give details of parents etc.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Mo

Harvey A. Drury Born 1824, Kentucky, Died 1891, Indiana

Serval Harvey A. Drurys have been confused as to which one is actually the son of William and Elizabeth Drury of Mercer, and Washington countys of Kentucky. One has him listed on the Internet as married in Texas with descendents. My research has discovered the following:

Harvey Drury is first listed in the 1850 Mercer Co. census with wife Martha Inman and children, Sarah, William, and James. Living with them are the parents of Harvey, William and Elizabeth Drury. The 1860 Mercer census has Harvey listed as H.A. Durrey, with Martha and children, Sarah, John E., Elizabeth, Mary, and Margaret. Between 1860 and 1863, Martha Inman Drury dies. Second marriage was to a Mary Vanarsdale, Aug 13, 1863 in Mercer County. Harvey is listed in the 1870 Mercer census in the household of his son James, along with the children of he and the children of Martha Inman. Harvey and second wife Mary, and all of his sons and daughters, and their families, except Sarah
then move to Johnson County, Indiana, between 1871 and 1878. Then Harvey and Mary, and Martha Inmans children are listed in the Union, Johnson County, Indiana 1880 census. The children that married are within the same county census. Harvey and Mary then move to Hamilton Co. Indiana, where Harvey and Mary give consent of marriage to the only child of that marriage, Thomas Harvey Drury to Sarah Eubank, May 29,1892. Mary Vanarsdale Drury is widowed in the 1900 census at age 83, living with her son Thomas Harvey Drury in Hamilton County. There is no obit or death record for Harvey, however he is buried at Union Chapel Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, stating birth of 1824, and death 1891.
Harvey's daughters, Elizabeth, Mary F., and Margaret are listed in the 1870 Mercer census, however upon their arrival to Johnson County for the 1880 census Elizabeth is not listed. Elizabeth married Peter Hamilton, Jan 9, 1878 in Johnson County. James and William Drury remained in Indiana. One of his sons, John E., the only child to return to Mercer County,Kentucky, had two children in Indiana. James M. Drury, born March 29,1871, Indiana, and Rosa Drury, born 1876, Indiana.
Harvey's daughter Margaret Jane Drury was found in the 1900 ElPaso, Texas census, married to William E. Sharp. They were married Jan 3, 1886 in ElPaso. Death certificate for Mary Jane Drury states she was born Kentucky, and that her mother was Martha Inman, and her father was Harvey A. Drury. She was 87.
I have further in depth files on the descendents of these Drury's for Indiana, and Kentucky. Anyone wanting to respond to this query can contact me by responding to my post or by E-mail.
marshall.drury@insightbb.com
Marshall Drury

The book was written by Ella Virginia (Drury) Adams, his youngest daughter. She has some information on the Buzzards and Drury's but it is mostly about her parents, their children, travels, marriages, and Ella's life. It is more than 500 pages.

I knew Ella for a few years while she lived here in Vacaville, CA. Time period is mid to late 1700's and St. Mary's Country Maryland, and Perry County, Missouri by way of Nelson County, Kentucky comes into the pictures somewhere.

Mary Knott married Charles Brewer and they had 11 children. The first in St. Mary's County, Maryland, the other 10 born in Perryville, Missouri.

Email zellgenealogy (at) gmail.com

JME,

It is the 1850 Illinois Census for Reynold, Monroe, IL that has Susan Wynes (Windes) as an occupant of David Drury's household. David was John Teasley Drury's father as shown in my note "John Teasley Drury Found".

Michael Drury

John Teasley Drury and the Searcy Drurys

Though this is not my line, I have been at the epicenter of a lot of new insights on John Teasley Drury lately. He has been one of the hardest Drurys to locate, but we may now have his Grandfather and a connection with the Drurys of Mountain, Searcy Co. Ark.

John Teasley in the 1880 MO census in Plattin, Jefferson Co. has his father listed as born in Turkey. This has always raised the eyebrows.

Recently, I came across Boone County, Ar By Boone Co. Historical Society, Turner Publishing Company. It states on page 216: The Drewry ancestors migrated from Turkey to England, then to America, settling first in North Carolina, Tennessee and then Arkansas.

This seems an odd coincidence to have two references to a Drury (Drewry) born in Turkey and with the North carolina connection as well (David Drury, John Teasley's father was born in NC according to the 1850 Reynolds, Monroe, IL Census.)

The Boone Co insert is from a branch of the Searcy Drurys who are decended from John Henry Drury b. 1794. There is a family history "The Descendants of John Henry Drewry" by Jody Drewry that I viewed online. It lists six known children for John Henry, but with a tantalizing gap between the oldest William Henry drewry b. 14MAR 1813 and the second Martha L. Drewry b. 27MAY1818. Plenty of time to slip in David Drury b 1817 (age 33 in 1850).

Other interesting overlaps include the rumor that John Teasley's father was from Crawford, ENG (There is none.) One of the younger sons of John Henry was named Crawford, hardly a common name at the time.

David Drury was in MO when he married Sarah Windes (see John Teasley Found followups)as John Teasley was born there before they moved to IL in 1850.

George Washington Drewry and his younger brother Joseph Jackson Drury went from Dekalb, TN to western MO (where they appear in the 1850 census and each has a child born in MO) before returning to TN and then moving to Searcy where they joined up with the oldest brother Wiliiam Henry.

There is no paper trail to tie all of these loose ends together. However, there are plenty of male descendants of both lines and a DNA test might confirm that David Drury was a long lost brother of the Searcy founders -- or not.

Michael Drury
