I have been subscribed for years. I can't travel right now for research and Ancestry is the next best thing although www.familysearch.org (free) is really excellent too.

With Ancestry I use the "old search" and have never filled in the boxes to save or create any trees or look for "leafs". I just use the databases for myself and to help others.

Sorry don't have any more information. I put the word out to my other family members and so far nothing. They were either to young to know back then or too old to remember now. If someone does come up with it I will let you know.

Doing some searching all I found was Mervin R Smith with mother's maiden name Dryer in CA Death Index. Born in KS died 1991 in Los Angeles County.
Resided in Rosemond and Boron CA 1975 to 1980 of available Public Records database on Ancestry.

Also, would you happen to know anything about the children and what became of them?
The Smith side lost contact with them after Harvey died.
Thanks for all your help.
Margaret's sister Lulu married Harvey's brother William "Bill" Smith.

Margaret was my grandmother's older sister. While I don't know much of her husband and family, I have Dryer Genealogy and her mother was a Nasalroad married Kee.

I don't have a death date for her...Harvey died in 1954 in Riverside County CA. She lived for a while with my step-grandfather and grandmother, then in a little house close by in La Sierra, Riverside County CA. Family memories are she had 2nd husband that died within a few years of marriage and she then left CA with her children to live in Oregon. Time frame would be 1950 to 1960. But one family member memory has she was remarried before 1954, 1950 or so. I don't have a clue if true and if she was divorced or widowed from Smith.

I had a mother board meltdown recently and new computer has Windows 8 and I have a few more hoops jump through for Win8 to "read" my Family Tree maker file from old hard drive (Win7) and be able to scan from Computer to upload or email pictures. I can mail paper copies if necessary, but the genealogies are also on Ancestry.com Public Trees.

1910 and 1920 census the Dryer family are in Lyons, Rice County KS. 1920 Ancestry index has name transcribed as Dwyer. 1930 census Harvey & Margaret are in Lyons, Rice County KS and Luther and Bertha Dryer are in Reno County, KS
1940 census Harvey and Margaret Smith are in Temescal Township, Riverside County CA, (La Sierra P.O.).
There's a book titled "The Dryer Families of America" by William B. Dryer. I had to search on book-collector sites, as it was self-published and there's no publisher information in the book. I looked on Amazon and other book sites, and nobody is listing any copies right now. It's possible libraries that have genealogy sections might have a copy.

I never was able to get much info on the Dryer family. Something my Grandmother always wanted to know about. She has since passed away many years ago. So mu info is very limited on this family.

William Dryer I I have as being a Blacksmith in Taunted England B 1630-1704. M to Elizabeth Jones.

William Dryer II 1655 to 1784 M Ester Wilmarth. He settled in Rebobolth died a year later from a fall from a horse.

I descend from there youngest son

Jesse Dryer B Attleborough,1773- 1853 M Amelia Neff
Moved aftet the war to Randolph, Vermont where his 4 oldest children where born
. About 1808 They moved to Western NY State, where many other Dryers had been settling. Jesse's 1st wife Amelia Died in 1810. and after some years he remarried, ??? and moved to Montgomery Co, Ill. as did his 3 sons. He died there in 1853.
Children:

I descend form his son :

John Lewis Dryer; 1803-1844, he was 41 when he died. He M Mary Reid, 17 lived in Attleboorough, Mass. They had 3 sons and 2 daughters, of which I decend from his son Eli, All 3 sons served in the Revolutionary War and 1 gave his life.

There son
Jesse Dryer 1773- 1853 M Amelia Neff

There son Eli
his son Charles Burr Dryer
My Grandmother Louise J Dryer.

You may find info in Arkansas 1880-1900 also in the census for Bald Knob Village, in White Co.
Also, check for info in Litchfield Ill

There is a William Dryer, who died abt 1854who's father was Jesse Dryer. They could not find alot of info on him, but that he had quite a large family

There are also relatives in in Jonesboro Ark as well. That is pretty much what I have. I would love to get a copy of a book on them, if you ever find 1 let me know.
Thanks for answering. I have the basic info, but want to check it against the book. I'm trying to find out about William Dryer II, born 1630 in Taunton England. My ancestor is his second son, William Dryer III, who was the first Dryer to the Colonies, and I'm unsure whether he was born to William II's second wife, Anna Locke, or his third wife, Elizabeth Jones. The second text page of the book, which has this information, is blank.

My maiden name is Dreyer and I recently started my search. I recieved a copy of my family tree but its hard to understand and read because it is so old and so many pages to it. It was hand written so its hard to read. LoL. anyway I remember seeing the names Johann Heinrich Dreyer, and Dora Dreyer in the tree. I am the grand daughter to Adolf "Sonny" Dreyer and Ggrand-daughter to Adolf Karl Dreyer. He is originally from Hannover, Germany and came to the states before the war. I don't know too much because I was young when he died and in his old age would switch from speaking English to German so he was hard to understand sometimes. Any help would be appreciated! Not sure if we are related but I do remember seeing the names you mentioned in earlier posts. Thanks!!!

Sorry.....(especially to Sue). I've been away from this thread for a long time. Since my last post, I've discovered that my g grandfather was, indeed the cabinet maker from Germany, detailed in Sue's post, but he married a fellow immigrant...Lizzie Merrin was, in fact, the wife of my other g grandfather on my mother's side (ie my grandmother's mother in law & not her mother)

GRANDAMOY....I think there were /are a lot of Dryers in Manchester/Liverpool....some were "natives" & some (like mine) had foreign roots &, gradually, their name changed to the nearest local equivalent (mine started off as Dreher). My Dryers were Lutheran Protestants, but one of my other main branches were of Jewish origin. Jewish family history is "one of the most challenging" (ie very difficult), but I've found a lot of help from posters on a British site called Family Tree Forum....they've got 2 or 3 Jewish posters who are incredibly friendly & helpful. Please give me a shout if you have any problems finding it.

Thanks Mark. That was when I was just starting out, my tree has been corrected since. You are right Fred C (or Frederic Charles had just the three boys). My wife's great grandfather was Charles Frederick born Oct 26, 1889 and her grandfather was Charles Frederick Jr. born Sept 7, 1889 (your father's 1st couisin).

Would you possibly have any infor on the Dryer's back in New York in the early 1800's? I've got two further generations - Jairous Lamphere Dryer (1830-1883) and Nathaniel A Dryer (ca1809-aft1880). Thanks.

-Sean Mayer smmayer11@msn.com

FYI:
In the actual image of the census page it has "daughter-in-law" for Clara in Fred's household, with a smaller "w of",and for Arthur above "son" is written in "nh" which I take to mean 'new head' so the "w of" is 'wife of new head'.
Also has married O yrs for both Arthur and Clara.

Not related

When I get home I will look in my Dryer family tree book (it was compiled some 20 yrs ago). I just spoke with my Father over the phone, his name is Arther J Dryer Jr., born Sept. 22, 1922. He thought his grandfather, Fred C. Dryer had 3 boys which you listed, but Clara (my grandmother) was actually married to Arthur J. Dryer whom was a sheep salesman for John Clay Company for almost 50 yrs. in St. Joseph MO (largest livestock company during those times). Both of them are buried in the Mount Olivet Cemetary in St. Joseph. I'll get back with you with more info if you'd like.

Mark H. Dryer

Obit for Delores Dryer Irving

Delores Irving (Dee)
Delores (Dee) Irving Born February 19, 1931 in Gallatin, MO and died January 24, 2009 in the evening after fighting cancer since January of 2001. At her bedside were her husband, John, their four children Carol Weldon, Doug Irving and his wife Uschi and son Daniel, Jan Anders and children Lauren and Bryan Anders and Jim Irving. Others in the immediate family arrived the next day. Dee's mother Mildred Dryer and brother, Bob Dryer also survives. Dee was very involved in P.E.O. both in North Hollywood and here in San Jose (Chapter SJ) and was involved for many years with their Nearly New Shop pricing antiques and collectibles as well as having been a Chapter President and also president of the local P.E.O. Reciprocity Bureau. This organization helps to educate women through Cottey College, a 2 year college in Nevada, MO and through local grants to women who have to return to the workplace. Profits from the Nearly New Shop help with these grants. Part of her antique 'skills' are the result of her passion for old glass - depression, art, Imperial (Candlewick) and the brilliant cut glass of the United States' craftsman. Dee was also active in her church. In addition to regular attendance, she was a member of WAM Circle of the United Methodist Women. Another favorite pastime that Dee participated in was the making of miniatures through her MiniCal club. Some of the items were rooms, scenes in coffee cups, plastic wine 'glasses' and even an old shoe. The club has for many years participated in the 'Showcase of Miniatures' (The Good Sam Show) where the profits supported either gifts to the hospital or, more recently, the Plane Tree Health Library. Dee and her husband John, were married in Burbank, California where she worked at a specialty greeting card company helping her husband to finish college. She became a 'stay-at-home mom' being heavily involved in PTA where she received an Honorary Service award in North Hollywood and then again after her husband had a job transfer to the San Jose area she received another Honorary Service award, being involved with Hyde Junior High in the Cupertino school district. Services will be held in their church, Campbell United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 29th at 11 o'clock. Donations in Dee's honor may be made to Cottey College, 1000 W. Austin, Nevada, MO 64772 or Endowment Fund, Campbell United Methodist Church, 1675 Winchester Blvd., Campbell, CA 95008.
Published in San Jose Mercury News on 25 or 26 through 29 or 30 January 2009. As I remember we paid for 3 days and got the 4th free or paid for 2 days and the 3rd was free. This copy was from the San Jose Mercury News website http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/mercurynews/obituary.aspx?p... >.

Burial was at Los Gatos Memorial Park, Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California, USA

Origins of the Family Dryer

I was raised to believe that my Biological Family came from Germany. And one day I purchased the Dryer Coat of arms (from one of the commercial suppliers through the military PX). Then while surfing the internet I noticed the same arms assigned to another family (the Johnstones of Annandale, Scotland). This led to a bunch of other searches, online, and I have found some information linking the Dryers to the Johnstones as far back as 1000CE (I am still a fan of AD but you know what I mean). This string of searching has opened a BUNCH of new information into the Dryer history. And caused me to develope a thesis that I am now working on proving.

Thesis: The Dryer Family originated in the Scottish Lowlands and were forced out of Scotland either by Civil war (during or after the jacobite revolutions) or during the highland clearences of the 18th Century.

These assumptions are supported by the following facts:

- My DNA Study did not show a single match in Germany (not that they don't exist, but that nobody there participated) but there were nearly 2 dozen matches in England.
-- >70% of all matches were of Scotish Decent, there were several Wallace, Johnston, Bruce, and Swinton Matches (all of which are families located along the Scotish/English Boarder).
- My German Family comes from Hamburg, which has one of the largest Scotish Populations in Mainland Europe... With a documented link to fleeing Scots from the 1700's Highland Clearences.

If are interested in participating in a DNA study, I did my DNA link through Ancestry.com. (familytree.com has an ongoing Dryer study - with several dryer participants -- I am planning on participating in that study as well).

Warm Regards,

DJ Dryer

Dryer family Manchester/Liverpool/Nottingham

I believe my grandmother, Lena Dryer, was adopted by Charles (originally Christian) Dryer & his wife Ada (formerly Rheinhardt). Charles/Christian & Ada were living in West Derby, Liverpool in 1881, tho Charles'/Christian's family may have mainly been located in Manchester. By 1901 they had moved to Nottingham.....Lena was supposed to have been born there in 1895, but I have been unable to trace any registration of her birth....she was never able to obtain a birth certificate.....& she did not know when her birthday was, although she thought it was late December/early January.

Very grateful for any information

this family are also on the 1881 census in West Derby (now suburb of Liverpool)with children Louisa born London and Charles born Liverpool. Both Christian and Ada are recorded as born Hanover. You can find this entry for free by searching the census on www.familysearch.org

This is the family mistranscribed in 1891 as PRYER living at 16 Deacon Hill

1891 England Census
about Christian Pryer
Name: Christian Pryer
Age: 45
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1846
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Ada
Gender: Male
Where born: Berlin, Germany

Civil Parish: St Mary
Ecclesiastical parish: St Ann
Town: Nottingham

Christian Pryer 45
Ada Pryer 35
Louisa Pryer 15
Charles Pryer 12
William Pryer 10
Alfred Pryer 8
Ernest Pryer 5
Albert Pryer 1

you can order a copy of Lena's marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk with the reference below.
hello again

it's good that you have your grandmother's marriage certificate details but they do NOT give details of the mother so Elizabeth MERRIN would not be mentioned unless she was a witness....only the father's name and occupation. Was her father a cabinet maker? I suggest you get a copy birth certificate of one of Lena's siblings which should give more information and will give mother's details.

I've contacted my mother, to check if my grandmother ever said anything about her mother having been Germany. She was totally surprised by the suggestion....her mother had often said her father had been German, but had implied her mother had helped him live in a foreign country.

My mother then mentioned that she'd got my grandmother's marriage certificaze (NOW she tells me) & on it her parents are listed as Charles Dryer (possibly what they saw as the nearest English equivalent to Christian, which I, think, had faded in Britain at the time...or maybe Christian wrote his name & they couldn't make out much beyond the CH).......& Elizabeth Merrin !

Going to check Ada's maiden name....could have been anglicised, but it really doesn't explain why all the family had the impression that my grandmother's mother was not German, unlike her father.

Going to put a call out on the Notts thread
