Thank you for posting the facts.
Seems to be some nasty people in this section.
My Great Great Grandparents were William and Catherine
Matheson nee Drysdale. She was born 3 Cato Square Old Machar Aberdeen 14 Jan 1826.
She left lots of Drysdale documentation including the report you posted.
My Grandmother passed these down(signing them) and I intend passing them down.
Their daughters were Champion Highland dancers and lived with James and Rolanda Smith family in Resolis(the Black Isle) Scotland, until they immigrated to New Zealand.

"On the Twentieth Day of May, One Thousand Five Hundred and Three Years

We, Thomas, William, and James Douglass, sons of the departed Thomas Douglass, of Brushwood Haugh, in the parish of Drysdale, and Shire of Dumfries, left our native place for the reason here assigned, viz:-

Defending our just and lawful rights against our unjust neighbour, Johnston of Greenstonhill, who, being determined to bring water to his mill through our property, and having obtained leave of his friend, the King, began his operations on Monday, the 16th of May, We prevented him by force.

The next day he brought twenty of his vassels to carry on the work. We with two friends and three servants, (eight in all,) attacked Johnston with his twenty, and, in the contest, fourteen of his men were killed, along with their base leader. A report of these proceedings was carried to the King, and we were obliged to fly, (the tocsin being sounded).

We took shelter under the shadow of the Ochil Hills, in a lonely valley on the river Devon. After having lived there a full two years, we returned home in disguise, but found all our property in the possession of Johnston's friends, and a great reward offered for our lives. We, having purchased a small spot, called the Haugh of Dollar, and changed our names to the name of our Parish, are clearly in mind to spend the residue of our days under the ope of the Ochils, and wish the name of Drysdale to flourish in the lonely valley. The King passed through this with his Court on the 12th of June, 1506, going from Stirling to Falkland - dined on Halliday's green. (an eastern neighbour;) but we were not recognised."

The above story has been preserved among the desendants of Thomas, William, and James Douglass, now known by the name of Drysdale, and copied at several times by different individuals - first, by Simon Drysdale of the Haugh of Dollar, in the year 1620; by Robert Drysdale of Tillicoultry, in 1708; by John Drysdale, Dunfermline, in 1835; by James Drysdale, Dumfermline, in 1838; by John Montrose Drysdale, in 1841; by George Drysdale, Aberdeen, in 1845; by David Drysdale, Glasgow, in 1857; by John Harrower Drysdale, Aylmer, Ontario, Canada, in 1920

=====================================================================================

The above was taken from a typed transcript of the original 1506 document . both are available at douglas archives dot com .For some reason , I could not get the original to upload .

Many thanks Mal,

I'ts a pity Hugh was full age, but Anne's age might help.
There were a few Roberts in my family.
My g grandfather George, father James Drysdale, had two brothers.
My mother never mentioned they had a sister.

I think that is my gg grandfather James Drysdale's will on the PRONI site, sons George, Robert & John. He died 18th July 1886.
The only death cert that matched James gives his age as 58.
G grandfather George Drysdale was 26 when he married in 1880.

There was also a will for a Robert Drysdale that I thought was the son mentioned in James' will, as Robert's will mentions a sister Mary Jane, and James' will mentions a daughter of that name, but the ages don't match.
Maybe James age is a bit out?

Robert Drysdale who died 4th Feb. 1891, aged 50? had a share in a sailing lugger Gannet of Belfast.

As James died 1886 and his will wasn't proven until 27th Feb. 1891, I think Robert's death had something to do with this.

I will let you know if I find more about the Lowry family.

Meg.

Hello Mal,

I will keep an eye out.

I did see the Cappa family in the census.
I had wondered if they were Italian. There aren't many, but maybe it is a version of another name.
I think I saw it spelled Cappagh too.

It could be Annie Drysdale is from a different family, and not one of mine.
I was really wondering if you had her marriage cert.
I might be able to place her.

There were a few more possible Hugh Lowrys in the census, but maybe the ages did not match?
Margaret

Hello Mal,
I probably didn't have the Drysdale marriage because it was in Belfast.
Most of my ancestors (that I know of) seem to have married in the Ards area.
I think the Drysdales in the census at Templemore Avenue may be related, but I'm not sure.
My mother's late cousin Hugh Drysdale used to have a man's outfitters in Newtownards.

The Greengraves family seems to fit.
They may have worked for the Fergusons, who were big landowners in those days.

I will keep an eye out for info on the Lowry family.

This is my granny Mary Ellen Drysdale, and her husband John Rogan, my mother's stepfather.
I think the building is Hughes' barn in Ballycran.
Some of the older Drysdales lived there.

Margaret

Hi Margaret, Thanks for replying
I have the marraige certs and all the census returns, my problem is that my great grandfather Hugh Lowry married Sarah Cappa in Belfast in 1915 his father is listed on marraige cert as hugh also, but that is all the info i have on him. So with the process of elimination i search for hugh lowry with father hugh and came up with the one on Greengraves Road on the census and most of the others names matched other family memebers, so i maybe going down the wrong road all together unless i can confirm ggg hugh's birth.
thanks
Had a look at familysearch, and the census, and think Annie's husband was maybe Hugh Lowry, married in Belfast?
There was a marriage for a Hugh Adair on the same page.
I think I may have known one of the family some years ago, but didn't know of the Drysdale connection.

Margaret

Hello Mal,
I don't seem to have that marriage.
My grandmother did have a few relatives living in Newtownards, but I am not sure who your Annie was.
My grandmother helped out for a while at a relative's farm, but I think it was in the Donaghadee Rd area, around Ballyharry.
The name was maybe Adair, but not sure.
Robert was a popular name in the family.
I might be able to help if I knew more about the marriage.
Regards,
Margaret

Hello Hugh,

My mother had a cousin Hugh Drysdale, who died some years ago. He had a menswear shop in Regent St Newtownards, and I think he may have been related to Henry Drysdale of Templemore Avenue Belfast, but still working on this. See census 1901 & 1911.

I have been told of the Drysdale/Truesdale connection before, also Clydsdale.

It would help if I knew when the family came back from Scotland, but they may have been back in Co Down for hundreds of years. There are some very old Drysdale gravestones around, with different spelling.

I found mention of a James Driscoll in Cloughey. The reference was a bit vague, but I think it was in school records.
I lost a few notebooks when we had work done in the house.

There was no date given for this, but was probably in the early 1800's.

I have a feeling it might have been my gg grandfather, or his father.

I see from www.familysearch.org that Elizabeth Paxton married George Truesdale 12th August 1856 in Banbridge.
Fathers James Truesdale and Samuel Paxton.

Ros Davies has more on her Rootsweb/Ancestry Freepages.

I looked for Truesdales some years ago, for a member of the North of Ireland Family History Society, who lives in Scotland.
Because of family circumstance, he has put research on a back burner at present.

I didn't keep the details, as I drew a blank in my area, because it was difficult to get at existing church records for the time frame needed.

As far as I remember the place name was not clear, but he thought his wife's ancestor might be from "Ballyrolly", not that far from me.

The name seems to occur more often in other parts of Co Down, especially Drumballyroney/Ballyroney.

That might be because the records are better for that area of Co Down.

The only members of my Drysdale family that emigrated, (that I know of) went to New Zealand, and it was probably in the 1930,s. Three of my mother's cousins, sons of Bessie Drysdale and ? Robson, from Windmill Row Newtownards went to New Zealand.

One brother was too young, and stowed away.
When he was found, a man names Claud Fleming paid his passage home, and when he was older, paid for him to join his two brothers.
A widowed Bessie married again, ? Gorman and named her son Claude. I think Claude had a sister.

I have found the son's first? address in my mother's papers.
John Drysdale
59 Minnehaha Ave
Woodlands Park
Aukland
New Zealand.

I am trying to mention as many names as possible, in the hope that someone connects, so I may repeat myself.

Maggie

James was the brother of Mary drysdale who is in my family tree. Their original name was Trusdale and came from county Down in Ireland. James and Mary moved to Alabama from Lugar in Scotland. Another brother, George, also immigrated with them. I think some of his family moved on to Illinois.

Hugh

Hi, I have Drysdales in my family tree. George married Elizabeth Paxton in 1856 county Down then moved to Scotland around 1857. Their original name was Trusdale. Some later moved to Alabama and Illinois, and I presume some returned to County Down.

Hugh

My Drysdale ancestors County Down,Ireland,Scotland

I am posting here in the hope that someone may recognise this family.
I have been comparing notes with other Drysdale relatives, and am now more confused than ever.

My maternal g grandfather was George Drysdale from Cloughey County Down. The family were mostly protestant and fishermen/farmers.

He is in the 1901 & 1911 census living in Ballycranmore/Ballycran More Co Down with my g grandmother Annie Quinn and family.

George told my mother that the family moved to Scotland from Ireland in the distant past (don't know when or how long they were away) and then some came back again.

He said the name was originally Driscoll, and changed to Drysdale in Scotland.
He also said some of his close relatives still kept to Driscoll.
George died on 22nd of October 1937.

George Drysdale and Annie Quinn were married 24th Dec. 1880 in Mount St Joseph's Catholic church in Ballycran Co Down.

Both fathers were named James.

I think my gg grandfather James Drysdale's will is on the
PRONI website.
I'm not sure, as I need to do a bit more research.
I hope to find his marriage soon.

There is also a will for a Robert Drysdale who may be James' brother.

If I have the correct deaths, Robert Died 4th Feb. 1891 aged 50. I thought Robert might be a son of James, but the only death that matched was a Robert Drysdale aged 50.

James died 18th July 1886.
The death index gives his age as 58. (If I have the correct one).

Both wills were Granted 1891, so I think there may have been a problem with the boats mentioned in the wills.
Some of these were part-owned.

There have been Drysdales in the Co Down area for many years.
I think some gravestones date from the 1700's.

The local Family History Society have copied some church records that I couldn't see before, so I hope to get more info on the family later.

www.proni.gov.uk

www.census.nationalarchives.ie

The most famous story of a spider influencing human history is perhaps the story King Robert the Bruce of Scotland. He was involved in a war with King Edward of England who was trying to conquer Scotland. In 1306 he was hiding out in a cave, , he had already fought 6 battles against King Edward and had been beaten back six times. While he was taking his rest he watched a spider trying to set up the support lines for its web. The spider tried and failed six times. He said "Now shall this spider teach what I am to do, for I also have failed six times." The spider made its seventh attempt and this time succeeded. Inspired by this King Robert the Bruce of Scotland set about rallying his troops and in 1314 he defeated King Edward of England and drove him out of Scotland.
THIS same story appears all over the ''web'' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_the_Bruce#Legends

Hi,since you have done your homework, where do you think Drysdale origin is from? I am from the Stewart Douglas clan. My grandmother was born in 1911 and told me we were from Mary Queen of Scots Court. When the Queen of England Came after the Stewarts,Some went to France some were killed and the ones that lived hid in a cave. They changed their name to Drysdale. This was the name of the cave. Please let me know if you have heard anything about this.

Do your homework. This is not the "origin" of the Drysdale name. It existed well before the so called Douglas brothers, or their descendants claimed it. Despite the sept relationship, there is no proven blood connection between Drysdale and Douglas. Stop spreading this myth.

Hi,
I would love to find the burial place(s) of my family members who resided at Aitkenhead Farm, Forest Mill, Clackmannan.
William Drysdale (d1868)
Robert Mudie Drydale (d1869)
John McNee (d1879)
Margaret McAlpine McNee (d1879)
I physically visited Clackmannan cemetery, Saline Cemetery and Blairingone but no luck. I also searched MI for these cemeteries but again, no joy.
If anyone has any brilliant suggestions I would really appreciate it.
I would also be keen to hear from any descendants of William and his first wife Helen Taylor Drysdale who emigrated to Canada or William and his second wife Agnes McNee.
Many thanks
Georgina Turner
Wellington, NZ

The Drysdales are recognized as a sept family in the Douglas Clan , this ''story '' is called the Drysdale Document , giving the happenings of that day in 1503 .
Im sure any Drysdales that colonized austrailia , got there after that date , i would say they would have to be linked . take a look at http://www.awm.gov.au/research/family.asp

My husband Robert Drysdale's father was Veral Drysdale of Missouri. He died in 1976 in Poplar Bluff, MO. His father was Archie Columbus Drysdale - and was born in Jordan, Ripley Cty, Missouri. His father was Andrew Drysdale. They came to the states from Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland and settled in Missouri. According to the census of 1870 they were in Ripley Cty and also in 1880 census. I believe his father also came from Scotland. His name was James Drysdale and in the 1870 census he was 56 and his wife was Ann also born in Scotland but I don't think she was Andrew's mother. According to a Scotland census when Andrew was 2 it showed the mother as Christian. In the 1880 census there was another James that was a brother of Andrew and his wife was Martha and she was born in Illinois.
Any information you might have would be appreciated. My husband thinks he is a 2nd or 3rd cousin of Don Drysdale, the baseball player. Don't know for sure about that.
Jean
