I would very much like to correspond with anyone who is actively searching primary sources for the family of Chretien DuBois of Wicres. I am currently rereading the Mannheim records and have made a few new discoveries and hope others have found a new info elsewhere that they would like to discuss.

Hi Liz,

Of course, I should have made the connection. Just jumped at the opportunity to encourage more Chretian descendants to participate in the project. There is a high likelihood we would see some differences in the fast mutating markers, which would help sort through the various DuBois family lines.

Best regards,
Bob

thank you for the info. I got most of my info from my Uncle. However if you look at the 1900 Census for Barry Co. Michigan you will find it list his birth as Dec. 1848. However his death record. B-342 entry 6515 shows that he was 70 yrs. 5 Mos. 18 days old at the time of his death on May 13, 1919. That would make his birth Dec 26, 1848. If you check the Dubois/Brown family tree on ancestry you will find some of where I got some of my info. The owner of the tree is my cousin.

Children of Modeste Dubois, Lewiston, Maine

The 1900 Census of Lewiston, Maine, lists as children of Modeste (living at the same address) as Napoleon, Marie, Emma (18 years old), Ada (7 years old), and Minnie (5 years old.) (Emma, Ada, and Minnie were born in Maine according to this census. No record of the births for Emma, Minnie, or Ada were found in a search of the Maine State Archives in Augusta, Maine.) Napoleon married Eva Guay in Arthabaska then returned to Lewiston. Details for Emma, Ada, and Minnie are missing...any help on these children of Modeste Dubois (son of Edouard and Esther Gosselin) would be very much appreciated.
Edouard Dubois (s/o Philomene and Delina Odias) married Emilia Couture (d/o Ramail and Marie Leblanc) July 14, 1902 in Biddeford. {source: "Marriages of St. Joseph, Biddeford, Maine, 1870-1979"} I've left the spelling of the names as they were recorded. There is no mention of Lionel in any of the Biddeford Parish books (St. Joseph's, St. Mary's , or St. Andre's.)
There is an Emilia Dubois buried in the St. Joseph Cemetery in 1941 but no obit was found in the local newspaper for that year.
The Biddeford/Saco City directories (1900-1922)do not have any listings for Edouard Dubois. There is one listing in the 1922 city directory for a Lionel Dubois, 36 High Street.

Made it to St Joseph's cemetery this morning. They did not have any records for any of William Dubois and Mary Hickey's male children. There was no record of the female children either but they may be indexed under their married names. Also, there was no record of a Dubois child of Lillian Cabana and William Dubois Jr. buried there or at St Mary's Cemetery in Saco.

I'm looking for the date of death for Modeste Dubois first wife (Arzelie Patry) and any information on his children. What is known to me so far is as follows:

In 1881 Modeste and Arzelie lived in Levis, PQ, with Alphonse (age 5), Joseph (age 3), and Napoleon (age 8 Months). Modeste immigrated to Lewiston, Maine in 1887. In 1900 Modeste lived on Water Street in Lewiston, Maine with Napoleon (age 22), Marie (age 17), Emma (age 18), Ada (age 7), Minnie (age 5.) Napoleon Dubois married Amanda Cote in Arthabaska in 1901--Modeste attended the wedding. (Arzelie was not living at the time of this marriage.) Children of Modeste Dubois (taken from State birth records, Parish baptism records, and censuses) followed by their Mother's name: -- Modeste-Alphonse, June 1874 (Arzelie Patry) --Joseph Achille, July 1875 (Arzelie Patry) --Alphonse, July 1876 (Arzelie Patry) --Joseph, November 1878 (Arzelie Patry) --Napoleon, April 1879 (Arzelie Patry) --Emma, January 1882 (unknown), Marie, May 1883 (unknown) --Josephine, July 1890 (Josephine Chartier) --Alma, August 1891 (Josephine Chartier) --Rose Anna, September 1892 (Josephine Chartier) --Ada, 1893 (Josephine Chartier) --Minnie, 1894 (unknown) --Albertine, January 1898 (Josephine Chartier.) Any help with Modeste Dubois and his family, especially those with an unknown mother would be much appreciated. Paul

William Dubois (bpt Sept. 6, 1915, St. Andre’s Parish, Biddeford) married Lilliane Cabana (bpt Nov 10, 1915, St. Joseph Parish, Biddeford) June 6, 1936 in Saco, Maine.
There were several Dubois girls who died from 1937 to 1945 but the parents weren’t listed. When I go to St. Joseph’s Cemetery later this week I’ll check to see if there is a child connected to William and Lilliane buried there.

The obit for Edmund Dubois (married Pauline Roberge May 7, 1948 in Biddeford. She died June 20, 1996) states that he was born Oct. 9, 1927, and that he graduated from St. Louis High School (Biddeford) and that he lettered in football. He was active in the St. Louis Alumni. Survive by two daughters: Diane Sesak of Colorado and Denise Weber of Biddeford. Survived by one brother: Raymond.
The 1961 Biddeford City Directory has them (Edmund and Pauline) living at 5 Mitchell Lane.
I will ask my father about Edmond as my father was once President of the St. Louis Alumni and may have known him.

Laurent Dubois (s/o William and Marie Hickey) married Therese Alice Sicard, July 2, 1946 in Biddeford.
Raymond Joseph Dubois (s/o William and Marie Hickey) married Doris Marguerite Dion June 7 1947 in Biddeford.
Roger Dubois (s/o Laurent and Therese Sicard) married Jeanne Demers July 3 1971 in Biddeford.
Dennis Maurice Dubois (s/o Raymond and Doris Dion married Doreen Lyn Cates July 16, 1977 in Biddeford.
Paul J. Normand Roger, bpt Nov 12 1946 (Saco.)

Christine Ann Webber (d/o Donald Weber and Denise Dubois) was baptized Jan 1975 in Saco (Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish.)

Florence Dubois (d/o William and Marie Hickey) bpt Oct 18, 1918, in Berlin, NH, married Alfred Cloutier Sept 2, 1936 in Biddeford.

From the obit for Albert Dubois (s/o William and Marie Hickey): born April 2, 1912. Died at the age of 59 years. Two sisters: Rita Provencher of California, and Pauline Arsenault of Sanford, Maine.
According to the 1930 Census for Biddeford Maine, The family (William, Mary, and all the children you listed) were living at 6 Clarendon St. in Biddeford.

There is a peculiar similarity with a Dubois family that lived on Water Street, Biddeford, in 1910. That census (1910) has Louis (rather than William) as the head, Mary as the wife(Her Parents were Irish), and the children were Albert, Willi, Paul, and Florence. Too much of a coincidence to ignore...was William sr's middle name louis??
I will check the cemetery next week. Paul

There is a St. Joseph Cemetery in Biddeford. Do you think there are some of the Dubois that you are looking for buried there?

Seeking info on a Florence Dubois, born about 1871 according to later census data. Family recollections state she was born on a plantation in South Carolina and that her father was a slave owner. I have checked the 1860 Slave Schedule to find DuBois slave owners.

Of course, family stories can be wrong...

I find 3 SC slave owners in 1860:

Jesse Dubois

Dr. T.J. Dubois (can't find him on the 1860 Federal, however)

JQ Dubois

If anyone has a lead on Florence I would love to hear back from you!

The two Dubois families in the U.S. are primarily in NY--your Chretien Dubois line--and in South Carolina. They are NOT the same family. The S.C. Dubois family anglicized their name to Dubose in the late 1600's. There is a great YDNA study at www.dubose.dna.rdgriffith.com where a direct male Dubois descendant can determine from which line they descend. I am trying to document the S.C. Dubois line from which I descend prior to 1630. Have names in a pedigree back to 1000 but no documentation yet. How far back do your pedigrees go? Best, Janice

This is what I have for Melchior (Melchoir) DuBois and family. I have some sources, but not a lot.
Melchoir (Also known as Mentor) is my husbands great-great grand father.

Melchior born possibly 1 Sep 1809 in Rhisnes, Namur Province, Belgium, died-? in Wisconsin. Mechior married Anatolie (Anatalie) Laurent born 11 Mar 1814 in Belgium, Died 27 Jan 1876 in Wisconsin. They were married before 1843 in Belgium. Both immigrated to US on 18 Jun 1856 aboard the ship J.H. Elliot from Antwerp to New York with three children.

Children as listed on 1860 US Census: (Note their name is spelled as DeBeau on the census)
1.) Josephine DuBois, b. 15 May 1843 in Rhisnes, Namur Province, Belgium, died 20 Mar 1925 in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. She immigrated with parents 18 Jun 1856 on ship J.H. Elliot. Married Henri Joseph Decremer Jr. in 1865 in Brown County, Wisconsin. I believe they had 8 children.

2.) Octavie DuBois: Born abt 1846

3.) Anatalie DuBois: Born abt 1848

4.) Gustave DuBois: Born 01 Jun 1849 in Rhisnes, Namur Province, Belgium. Died 11 Mar 1932 in Duvall, Union Township, Door County, Wisconsin. Married Mary Josephe Lemense in 22 Apr 1879 in Union Township, Door County, Wisconsin. They had 11 children.

5.) Marie Therese (Mary): Born 8 Nov 1851in Rhisnes, Namur Province, Belgium. Died 28 Apr 1935 in Red River Township, Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. Married Victor Joseph Decremer about 1871. Believe to have had up to 8 children.

6.) Catherine: Born abt 1854 in Belgium.

7.) Jean Baptiste (John B): Born abt 1856 in Belgium.

I have no record of Melchior's or Anatolie's parents.

I am still researching this family and need to source the other 4 children listed on the 1860 census. I have no idea why the other children on the census were not listed on the ship manifest. Unless they came with other relatives - though I can't see the youngest, (Jean B) traveling with anyone else besides his mother.

Thank you very much for the information.

Edouard & Emilia were in Quebec by 1904. Edouard died in 1919 and Emilia immigrated to Vermont where she died in 1954. I have birth information on their other children but nothing on Lionel who was said to have been born in Maine.

Thanks, again, for taking time to look for information. Much appreciated.

Thank-you very much for the info. Do you have any info on the children of William Sr. and Mary Hickey? I tried to find info on their sons but no luck there. I have limited info on William Jr. only because he was married to my Grandmother. Is there a St. Joseph's cemetery there in Biddeford?

Yes, I think that is where their family was buried. William Jr. isn't , he is buried in Hawaii . Also if it is not to much to ask, My grandmother ( Marie Lillian Germaine Cabana)who married William Joseph Dubois Jr. had a child. I don't think the child lived past three years of age. My Grandmother would never talk about it, so I don't have a name or anything really. If you find a child Dubois, would you please send me any info, I have a spot in my tree for the child and would love to have a name for that spot. I have a few bits of info that may help. Lillian and William Jr. were married June 6,1936. Mary and William Sr. lived at 163 Cleve St. Biddeford. My grandmother ( Lillian) and William Jr. lived at 14 Irving St. Saco, Maine. William Sr.'s middle name is Joseph.

Paul, I thank-you for all of the time you have put in to this. It means more than you know. You have filled in gaps in my tree and have gotten me closer to returning William JR.'s medals to his family. If I can do anything to help you with something from here please let me know. Do you know if their is a cemetery close to the ship yard in portsmouth? I know my Grandmother worked there for a while. I guess somethings might stay the way my Grandmother wanted them, not in the wind. If I come up with some more clues I'll write you back. Thank-you again, Sincerely, Laurie

Thank-you very much for all of your help, you have really gotten a lot of info. I have tried so long to find some living Dubois. When my Grandmother (Lillian) passed away 03/04/05, I found in her belongings a Purple Heart awarded to William Joseph Dubois Jr.. I was hoping to return it to his family. As long as she was alive she held on to it, but now that she has passed I don't feel like I deserve to hold on to it, it should go back to his family. With all your help I might be able to find someone who would like to have it in their family. I didn't see a death date for Raymond Dubois so I'm hoping I can find him. Thank-you also for checking into a child connected to my Grandmother and William. If there is anything I can do here in Florida to help you, please let me know. Sincerely, Laurie

A François Légaré was born on February 24, 1852 to François Légaré (he died at 69 on October 3, 1881 in Bécancour) and Reine Dubois in Bécancour.

I can’t find the marriage of this François Légaré. I can’t find him in the 1881 Canadian Census or in the 1880 USA Census. Was he dead in childhood?

The François Légaré who married Adèle Bélair in Montréal, St-Jacques, QC, on March 11, 1864 was born to Joseph Légaré and Marie Lord. Adèle was the daughter of Edouard Bélair and Marie Veillée.

I don’t have a François Léagré married to Delphine NAULT. Delphine NAULT married Pierre Légaré (son of Pierre Légaré and Émilie Verret) in St-Pierre-les-Becquets (Nicolet) QC on September 12, 1871. Delphine died in 1879. No known child born to this couple.

There is an Odilon Légaré born March 10, 1975 to Narcisse Légaré and Joséphine Hamelin in St-Gabriel-de-Brandon (Berthier) QC. After the death of Delphine, Pierre Légaré remarried Hélène Hamel in 1990. The couple appears in the 1881 Census with no child named Odilon.
