I am so sorry I have not replied before now. I wasn't aware I had any messages on the message board until today. I try to work on my tree during school breaks.

I know only that my grandfather's family came from Wynne AR. I believe his father was James Benjamin DuBois - married to Martha Ida Pollard. They were living in Wynne in 1938. My grandfather was called "Sam" but his name was Benjamin Ervin DuBois. His siblings were:
James DuBois (I think married first name "Mamie")
Laverne Dubois, married a Hathcock
Beulah DuBois lived in Clarksdale
Mattie DuBois known as Bootsie married a Hess from Wynne.

I have very little info on this side of my family b/c my father's parents separated before he was 2. My father's mother did not allow contact between my father and his father's family.

They are all three dead now and I have over the years off and on tried to find info on them. My dad new very little except names he had heard. He did reunite with his dad after his mother's death. However, his dad lived 6 hours away and died not long after.

Thanks for any information.

Paula DuBois Barton

I believe I found Elizabeth buried in Lake City Arkansas in 1901. She was living with her son JJ in Cuba, TN in the 1900 census. Could this be the same Elizabeth and is there documentation to prove it? I would desperately like to know.

leedubois@msn.com

To CD DuBois: My name is Marisha Pitts Morgan. Last year you sent a message to my daughter, who passed it on to me. I've tried for a year to figure out how to reach you. My Grandmother was Agnes DuBois Pitts, sister of James Ernest, or Uncle Togey as I knew him. My Aunt is Mary Agnes McMillan, living in Jonesboro, Ark. I never got to know Uncle Togey, but as a child I likened him to Ichabod Crane, and he drank diluted canned milk. This fascinated me. I met cousin May at my Grandmother's funeral and she left quite a lasting impression on me! I want to know more about the DuBois side of the family. Can you e-mail me at mortisha721@aol.com? Ancestry .Com won't give me access to the DuBois family tree until I rejoin. Actually, anybody kin to me on the DuBois side feel free to e-mail me.

I have a book compiled by Robert Seikel and he describes several of the DuBoise family.
I also recently found Peter and Arthur listed on not the Dawes Indian rolls, but did find them on the Guion Miller Rolls, so I'm trying to find more information on Indian blood.

Peter had a brother , John W.C. "Bud" Duboise who married Jessie Francis Hill . They had several children, one who was Jimmie Thomas Duboise . Jimmie married Henry Smith Holley.
Please go to our DuBose/DuBois Surname DNA Project website for more information on these families:
http://dubose.dna.rdgriffith.com

We will soon be publishing a comprehensive research report on the descendants of Peter and Annerev DuBois. At this writing, it seems certain that all the DuBois/DuBoise families of Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama are part of the same lineage and descended from Isaac Dubose/Dubosc of South Carolina.

DNA results: Chretien Du Bois descendants

DNA results are now in for a proven descendant of Chretien Du Bois and, subject to confirmation by additional DNA analysis, it appears that the New York DuBoises and South Carolina DuBoses are, in fact, completely unrelated family lines.

Over the years a number of researchers have suggested that the two families shared a common ancestry in France. That possibility seems less likely now.

These results are actually good news to anyone who does not have solid, proven documentation of their lineage. Relying on the spelling of our surname has proven to be an unreliable indicator of true lineage. This is particularly true for those tracing their heritage through Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama. Most of the Dubois/DuBoise families in this region are now proven to descend from Isaac Dubose of South Carolina.

DNA results of the Chretien descendant can be found on our project website at http://dubose.dna.rdgriffith.com

We encourage other Chretian descendants to join the project and help confirm the various lines within this great family.

Jackson Duboise, b in Franklin co AL may be the brother or maybe nephew?(looking at the dates) to my GG-grandfather Ezekiel Henderson Duboise b 1822 Franklin co- Ezekiel had a brother Jackson who had a son Jackson. Their parents came from France - we never knew their names only that they came to the states from France, through Lousiana to Ala. before the Civil war - they had 4 sons - Jackson (called Jake), Mack, Ezekiel, and Alonza (called Lonnie) (who left home and was never heard from) - these are according to the stories that were told by my Great Aunt - I know that Jackson moved to TN, around Memphis, and he was a Baptist Preacher (again according to my g-aunt) - She was the grandaughter of Ezekiel. - She also told the story that when they (not for sure if it was Ezekiel or his dad) changed the spelling of their last name - not really sure if they added the e or dropped the e or if it B to b or b to B ??? They changed it because there was another family with the same name and they kept getting banking, mail & etc mixed up so Grandpa Duboise changed the spelling of his name.

I do have a document showing her in Tishamingo Cty MS. She is in my line. We are currently attempting to finalize her connection to a Peter (possibly H.) Duboise (Dubose). You can input information in Google on Stephen and Issac Duboise/Dubose and find a plethora of information on this family. In Warren County TN she is listed in the census without Peter. Perhaps they divorced, separated or he passed away - we're not certain yet. She's the mother to my GR,GR,GR Grandmother Harriet E Duboise-Butler. Harriet married George Canady Butler. Let me know if you need more information. I have a lot of research done, just want to get this link finalized. This Dubose family immigrated in the late 1600's into Charleston SC. Many of the Dubose/Duboise served under General Francis Marion (a Hugenot) during the Revolutionary War.

Since I wrote the previous message, we no longer believe James and Margaret DuBoise are parents of Jacob J. DuBoise(which we now know is Jacob Jackson DuBoise). We are leaning towards believing Peter DuBoise and Annaree or Anna R DuBoisse are his parents.

Don't know how this all ties together, but I sure it does. My ggggrandparents were Peter Wm. McMann Duboise and wife Elizabeth Duboise (also her maiden name, supposedly cousins). She was born in AL, he in SC. They were also in MS, and their grandson, my ggrandfather, wound up in AR. Contact me and let's put some facts together.

Ms. Walker,

I would love to know more. My father said that his ancestors had escaped persecution in France. That some had settled in AR and he always said they had some connection to a place called Brandywine Island.

I would love to know if we have a connection.
James DuBoise and Margaret DuBoise Rutherford, TN 1816

Does anyone have any information on James DuBoise and Margaret (Margarott) DuBoise who were married 19 Feb 1816? I have assumed they were the parents of my great great grandpa Jacob James DuBoise or James Jacob DuBoise born 09 Jan 1817 in Rutherford County. Jacob's family later moved to Alabama, Arkansas and died in Desoto County, MS. Jacob married Lucinda Bruton 08 Aug 1837. He had a brother George Canadian DuBoise who was younger than him. George served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. He may have had brothers named Ezekiel, Uriah...possibly Willliam. Any help would be much appreciated.

DuBois(e) in Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas

My father is James William DuBois born in Memphis, TN; he lived in Cherry Valley, Cross County, Arkansas. His father was James Ernest DuBois(e) born in 1884 son of James Jackson DuBoise born in Franklin Co, Ala Aug 31, 1847. James Ernest DuBois married Essie Aila Sharpe in Arkansas. James Jackson DuBoise married Mary Penina Germany. He was the son of Jacob Jackson DuBois born in Rutherford county, TN in 1817 and married Lucinda Bruton. He was the son of James DuBoise and Margaret DuBoise who married in 1816 in Rutherford county. I can't find anything but that James DuBoise married Margaret DuBoise...I don't know if they were cousins with the same last name or if she had a different maiden name. I can't find them before or after Rutherford County. We were always told that "three DuBois brothers" came during the 1600's from france due to the persecution of the Hugeonots SP? One went North to NY, one went west (whatever west was) and one went south. This is the family tradition from my branch of the DuBois family. Can anyone help me place who James DuBoise and Margaret DuBoise's parents were, where they were born, who their siblings are, and any more children. Any other information on my family would be appreciated.

I have some information on Germany...not much. I have names and birthdates of James Jackson and Mary P DuBoise' children.

New evidence linking TN/AL Duboise families with Isaac DuBose

Recent DNA studies have established a connection between Elisha Duboise (Hardeman Co., TN ) and Elias H. Duboise (Warren Co., TN > Jackson Co., AL > Randolph Co., AR). Fifth-generation descendants of these two Duboise families share a 25/25 marker DNA match...and a 24/25 marker match with a proven descendant of Stephen DuBose Sr., son of Isaac DuBose, French Huguenot emmigrant to SC.

More details are available at the DuBose/DuBois DNA Surname Project Website: http://www.dubose.dna.rdgriffith.com
or email me at admin@dna.rdgriffith.com

New DuBose/DuBois Y-DNA Surname Project

This is an open invitation to all DuBose, Duboise, DuBois, etc. descendants to participate in a new DuBose-DuBois Y-DNA Surname Project. Comparative DNA studies are proving to be a great new tool in establishing family ties, particularly in cases where documentation has been lost.

The project is registered with the FamilyTreeDNA website at http://www.familytreedna.com/default.asp

The project website is currently under construction and can be found at http://www.dubose.dna.rdgriffith.com

Many people with these surnames descend from Isaac DuBosc and Suzanne Couillandeau, French Huguenot refugees who settled on the Santee River in South Carolina in the late 1680s...or from sons of Chretien and Cornelia DuBois, also Huguenots who emigrated to America in 1660 and settled in New York. Some researchers have suggested that these families share a common ancestor. DNA studies should establish whether or not this is true.

Duboise, Duboys, and other surname variants may also trace their ancestry to one of these family lines. Early results on my line (Duboise of Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama) suggest a close match to descendants of Stephen DuBose, son of Isaac…a conclusion supported by secondary and tertiary evidence, but no primary proof.

Participants must be male with a DuBose, DuBois, etc surname, since the testing is done on the Y chromosome, passed only from father to son. Females or maternally-related individuals may participate by submitting DNA samples of a related DuBose/DuBois male.

Please contact me if you would like more information.

Robert Griffith
Administrator
DuBose-DuBois Surname Project
Before anyone can help you, Nicole, you need to provide a little more information about your Duboise family. Do you know who your grandfather is/was? Where has the family lived? When were your father and grandfather born? Anything you can discover will help link your family to others.
