My grandmother was Carmen Duchene DeLaRosa, her father was Aaron Duchene and yes, he was in law enforcement. My grandmother grew up in El Paso Texas, was educated and my grandfather Jose DeLaRosa used to cross from Juarez into El Paso to work everyday. He used to see my grandmother standing on the porch. They moved to Indiana Harbor after they were married and had two children, Carmen and Miquel. My grandmother had a sister Luisa Madrid, a brother Emilio Duchene who was married to Faustina. I know many aunts and uncles and their children's name.

Haven't come across a Louis Duchene. I am the great great great grandson of Emil Duchene the Mexican/American War Hero. He was born in France (not sure where) but I believe it is from the Lorraine Region. His Father and Mother were George and Celeste Duchene. I don't know if he had any siblings but I did research that the family immigrating to Canada (Quebec) and then some time later to the U.S. or at least Emil in order to have been in the U.S. Army. He must of retired in Fort Bliss in El Paso and that's how the Duchene's ended up in West Texas.

Hello,
I see how you have helped another in trying to uncover information about their Duchene ancestry.

I was wondering, if in your searches, you have ever come across a Louis Duchene that married Louise Duchene. They had my father Pierre Duchene in Marseilles, France and then the family moved to the Alsace Lorraine region where my father and siblings Else & Jacques were raised. My father was born in 1907 so my grandparents could have been born between 1865-1885? My grandfather Louis was a Doctor and my grandmother Louise was a nurse.

My father came to America some time around 1930 and stayed with an Uncle in NY. Meanwhile, ALsace Lorraine was bombed during WWII and my father learned that his parents and siblings were all killed in the war. He never talked about it and I know very little more. I know they were Protestants...but I do not know what town he came from and can not find him on any records of entry into the US...
Any genealogy lists on line that I may be able to check?
Thank you for any direction you can offer,

Denise
You may email at dfd12@earthlink.net
Ok, I'm finding some conflicting data between what people have posted online and other data sources I have. This will probably take a while to figure out. I am more than happy to work on it with you.

Here is what I am finding:

Duchene Line:

William Duchene born 1845, appears to be the son of Francis Duchene. Francis is listed in the 1850 Census in China, St Clair County, Michigan. Francis was 53 in 1850, making him born about 1797.

I've found five online trees that appear to be referring to this Francis Duchene, three of the five trees say he was married to Clara Bertrand (1826), Mary Eleanora Lacroix (1832), and Pelagie Tessier dit Lavigne (1839). The fourth tree has him married to Margaret Villemin (1837); and the fifth tree has him married to only Clara Bertrand (1826).

In the book "Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region 1701-1936, Vol. 1;" Copyright 1976, 1987; Burton Historical Collection; indicates that there were two different Francis Duchene's and these online files appear to have combined them in places, Here is what is listed in the book:

Francis Duchene, son of Michael Duchene and Jane Petit, born 28 Apr 1798 at Detroit; married Clara Bertrand on 21 Nov 1826 at St Francois Clinton River. Francis and Clara had one child; Sophia, born 10 Dec 1829 at St Francois Clinton River.

Francis Duchene, son of Peter John Duchene and Mary Ann Greffard, born 22 June 1809 at Detroit; married Mary Eleonora Lacroix on 16 Oct 1832 at Detroit. Francis and Mary had six children: Victoria b. 1833, d. 1843; Francis b. 1835; infant son b. & d. 1838; Noel b. 1839; Pauline b. 1842; and William b. 6 Feb 1844.

1850 Census - China, St Clair, Michigan; shows the following individuals in Francis' household:
Francis, age 53 (1797)
Pallina, age 23 (1827)
Clarment, age 17 (1833)
Joseph, age (index shows 5, looks more like 8) (1842-1845)
William, age 5 (1845)
John, age 2 (1848)

At first I thought this Pallina may have been the Pelagie that was referred to in the marriages of some of the online trees; however, Pelagie was supposed to have been born in 1819 and the 1850 census clearly shows this Pallina to be 23 years old which would equate to an 1827ish birth.

I can't seem to find anything (so far) that would verify the marriage of either of these Francis Duchene's to Pelagie Tessier dit Lavigne.

That is about all I have so far on the Duchene's.

Geno/Gelina Line:

This is a tough one. The online trees seem to indicate that Esther Nancy was the daughter of Daniel Geno/Gelina and Adelaide Riopel.

Daniel Gelina is listed in the book mentioned above "French Families of the Detroit River Region". According to this book the children of Daniel and Adelaide were:

Marcelline (1837)
Daniel (1839)
Edward (1841)
Elisabeth (1842)
Angelica (1844)

I suppose this doesn't mean that there were any other children; however, these are the only ones listed in the book for this couple.

Can't seem to find them in the 1850 or 1860 census when Esther would have been living at home with her parents. Will keep looking to see if I can find her.

That's it for now. If you'd rather communicate by email, you can write to me at carol @ thefamilysleuth . com

I am a very proud member of the DuChene (Duchene)Family. So far what I have been able to find back to Belgium area, with documentation of passage to the US in May 10, 1858 of Nicholas Duchene with his son Florenz Duchene. My Family moved to Oregon from Minnesota, (Mora area) 45 years ago, most of my family members are still in Minnesota. Would like as much information as possible to piece together this family tree... Thanks so much, Teresa

Yes Irene you are correct about the Duchenes being from Switzerland and from the Lorraine region of France which is near by. How come you never told anyone in the family that Grandma Luisa told you this? Did she say anything else about her dad Matilde or her grandfather Emil? I heard Emil was born in France and came with his mom and dad to Canada. Emil fought the Mexicans in the Mexican-American war and was a war hero and eventually settled in the El Paso area.

Hello
I am trying to find out more about my father and the possibility of family in France. Born in 1907 on Oct 29 to Louis and Louise (Physician & Nurse) in Marseille, France. Brother to Jacque and Else. French Protestant. Raised in Alsace Lorraine. Pierre came to America sometime between 1923-1935. Went to Art school. Was an Artist. Died 1983.

All we know of our family in France was that at the onset of WWII my father found out that his family's home was bombed and his inquiries from America showed that all were dead. He stopped searching for them after two years. He would never talk about it. He is a mystery to my brothers and sisters and I. If this is familiar to anyone, please respond to dfd12@earthlink.net.
Thank you,
Denise

I read your message on the Duchene's in West Texas. Yes, we are from the Matilde Duchene line. My aunt says that Matilde was her grandfather. My grandmother was also named Maria Luisa and she married a Ramirez. As a matter of fact, three Duchenes married three Ramirez brothers.

My aunt remembers meeting Aaron. She says that she was about 8 years old when she met him...

Also, my grandmother Maria Luisa told us that the Duchenes came from Switzerland but were of French descent, and yes they were one of the first descendants from Europe to come to the El Paso and Juarez area...
Interesting...right?
Irene

Helloooo, I have been researching a Duchene family from Pembroke, Ontario.
They been difficult to trace due to different spellings of the name but it appears that they came from France and settled in Rimouski Quebec before settling in Ontario. The given name Peter carries for several generations.
Dave

Hello,

I am a Duchene. My family came to the united states from Belgium and Ireland. Late 1700's early 1800's. I don't recognize the names you are looking for in our family records. Best of luck to you.

Wendy "Noel" Duchene

Hello, I am looking for our family before 1880, our g-grandfather appears to have arrived in Australia around the late 1870's but have been unable to find how he arrived and from where (his marriage certificate said that he was born in Harve, France, his name was Jules Theodore de Chene, his father was Jules de Chene and his mother Rosine Fosserd) I am hoping that the du Chene's may be related.
Any information on the family would be appreciated.
