Gypsies were forced to take on last names in the 1700s, before then, as were Jews to take on "german sounding" last names to distinguish them from the Christian population, that's why most European Jews have last names which sound German. As gypsies originated in India, they didn't have Hungarian sounding names. The name Duda in hungarian and czech, slovak and polishand ukrainian means bagpipe player. Somtimes it would be Dudas (someone who plays the bagpipes). I have seen gypsy names such as Gatyas (someone who wears underwear), Piszkos (someone who is dirty) Hungary also back before 1920 was full of people from different countries, it was the USA of Europe. Hungarians, Poles, Croats, Romanians, Slovaks, Slovenians, Germans, etc. In my genealogy search I have found towns full of German names, including the Catholic priests. Hope this helps.
