I have come to a wall with William Duel b.1796 NY living with children in 1860 census in Fremont, Steuben, New York. His son is Abram (30yrs old) both of them were blacksmiths. This family moved to WI showing up in the 1870 census but now Abram's name is listed as Nelson. Nelson moved to Traverse City, MI and shows up in the 1900 census but Duel is no spell Duell.

Do you have anything referencing this Duel family?

Thanks for your help.

Joe Otlewski
jotlewski@ameritech.net

This is the information I've received from my father (who got it from Leon Duel, perhaps my gg grandfather?). It was compiled in 1946. There are a few spelling issues, I'm typing as is (it was written via typewriter originally). Some of the spelling of the names even vary within the same pesonI've noticed there is updated info from other posters as well:f

WILLIAM DAVOL (1620-85?)
This name is doubtless Norman-French, but the given names of William's family indicate that this family had been long in England that French given names had ceased to be used. Where in England, William Davol was born or where he lived is unknown. Also his wife's name is unknown, though she is several timentioned in records.

They came to the New World, and on Aug. 3 1640, he applied for land in Duxbury (some eight miles north of Plymouth, Mass), then in the Plymouth Colony. By June 1643, he had moved to Braintree, some 12 miles south of Boston. He moved again, and lived at Rehobeth, in the Plymouth Colony (about 37 miles west of Plymouth, and 8 miles east of Providence) at least from Dec. 26, 1645 until Oct. 2, 1650.

Early in the 1650's, the family moved to a fourth residence in the New World, down in the Colony of Rhode Island. Probably they were not in accord with the strict Puritan beliefs. On May 17, 1653, he was made a freeman of Newport. The last record of him is in the tax-roll of New port in 1680 (NOTE: I read somewhere that he came an indentured servant).

His children were:
John Davol, b. June 24, 1643, d. July 1643
Joseph b---- d Feb 1716 (ancestory of Conn and RI families spelling name DeVol)
JONATHAN b----, d after 1709
Benjamin, b---- (most of their descendants spell their name Duval.

JONATHAN DEVIL (1647-1709)
Jonathan married Hannah Adley and lived at first at Newport, Later they moved to Dartmouth, in the Plymouth COlony, some 15 miles or more east of Newport, and a few miles southwest of New Bedford. The records of Dartmouth spell the name, Devil.

They had eleven children, a goodly colonial family:
JONATHAN
Joseph, b---- d. 1726 wife was Mary Soul
Benjamin b---, d 1735 m Ann Bronell
Jeremiah b---- d Nov. 29 1753 wives Sarah Allen, Sarah Whitridge
Mary who married James Mosher
William b---- d 1772, m Sarah Sisson
Ann, who m. Benjamin Sweat
Hannah b---- d after 1744 who m. Joseph Weeden
Abigail, who. m. Jobe Milk
Sarah, b July 25 1717 m Hugh Mosher
Elisabeth who m. George Brownell

JONATHAN DEVIL 2 (1670-1709)
Jonathan Dveil 2, son of Jonathan and Hannah Adley Devil, was probably born in Newport, RI. He lived like his father at Dartmouth, Mas.
His wife's name also is given as Hannah, but another record gives her name as Mary Clark. Probably Hannah was a second wife. Which one was the mother of the children is unknown.

He had six children:
WILLIAM b. Apr 16, 1698
Jonathan b. May 1 1702, m Sarah Cadmon
Hannah b. Jan. 29 1699, m John Tripp
Abiah (spelled Abpire and Apphia) b---
Mary b. Feb 25 1710 m Richard Booloe

Jonathan Devil died in the prime of life, near the 1st of September, 1709. He left 5 children, the oldest one probably 11. His sizeth child was not born until the following 26th of February. It was one of life's tragedies, so often recorded in those days of high mortality.

Jonathan Devil left a will, which was poved Sept 7 1709; the executrix was his wife Hannah. He gave to his son William (then 11) the homestead farm, which came to him from his father Jonathan Davol by gift. His wife was to be allowed her one third during her life. To son Johnathan went 50 acres; and to these two sons privilege in lands in Dartmouth.

WILLIAM DAVELL (1698-1760)
William Davell at the age of eleven was left fatherless, and heir to the family homestead. No doubt from that time on he played nearly a man's part; school days being left behind. Boys must mature early in colonial days, and young William earlier than most.

William married Elizabeth Whitehead about 1717, at age 19. They had 3 children and perhaps more.
Apphia b Mar. 6 1718
Jonathan b Jan 16 1720 (no record)
WILLIAM b Mar 4 1728

With the list of these three children is recorded the death of a Noe Duel, Mar 8 1797, and a Jacob Duel, 1754, who probably also were children of William and Elizabeth Davell.

On Feb 5, 1759 William Davell was appointed guardian over William Hudleston, aged 14, at Taunton (25 miles north) by Judge George Leonard of the probate of wills in the county of Briston.

William Davell died before Sept 6 1760 when Apphia (spinster) gave her brother William Davol a recipt for "her portion of her father's estate and other legacies left vy her father's last will and testament."

Jonathan b 1720 was probably the Jonathan Duel who died at Saratoge (Saratoga), NY at the age of 104 years. Children in part, Johnathan, Gideon, Odesha, Seth, Bulah, and Reuben.

WILLIAM DUEL (1728-1814)
William Duel spent the major part of his life at Dartmouth. He was constable there in 1777. I seems that he did not take a soldiers part in the Revolutionary War. He was at Dartmouth as late as Jan 27 1783. Then his name as Wm. Divel appears on a recipt given for an aaaoynt owed Bersh Goddard signed by Henry Howland, Exec.

Probably William Duel joined the post-Revolutionary War migration westward to the eastern border of New York State. A William DUel sold land in Stanford, Dutchess County, NY and it see certain it was our William Duel. For the list of the children of his father was obtained from Dutchess County.
William Duel had the following eight children:
Levi
Richard
Ruth b--- d Mar 20 1840 m Joseph Tanner
Bashba
Seth
Jonathan (family name) who m. Patience Milk
William Jr
EZRA July 21 1766 d Mar 30 1844

EZRA DUEL (1766-1844)
Ezra Duel, son of William and Mehitable Whitehead Duel, was born July 21 1766 at the ancestral town of Dartmouth in southeastern Massachusetts. When he was young man apparently his father moved west to Dutchess County, NY

I presume that Ezra struck out on his own about 1786 at age of 20, and moved northward with his brother Jonathan (whose wife was Patience Milk) up to the northern border south of Lake Champlain. They settled in Hebon, Washington County. At this time the country was very wild, and just beginning to fill up with settlers. Brother Jonathan died of smallpox; many descendants of his live in Hebron and vicinity.

Probably it was here that he met his sweetheart, Debrath Stark who became his wife probably in 1788. Legend states that she was a cousin of Maj John Stark, who defeated Burgoynes Detachment at the Battle of Bennington in 1777 and thus made the finial defeat and surrender of Burgoyne invitable. Archibald Stark, father of Jihn, had two brothers, Jonathan (Nathan) Stark who came to this country at about the same time he did.

But according to the book, the Aaron Stark Family by Charles R Stark (Wright & Potte, Boston, 1927) which seems to be authentic, Deborah was the daughter of Nathan and Olive Morgan Stark, but no relative of the famous John Stark. Deborath was the oldest of eight children (and by a second wife, her father had eight more) and was born April 26, 1766. As a young girl she lived in southeastern Vermont at Guilford. Doubtless Ezra was wandering around the countryside working, and somehow came over to Guilford. They were married about 1788. Then they settles near his brother Jonathan, in North Hebron, Washington County, NY.

Ezra Smith was a blacksmith and farmer. His great-grandson Leon DUel, stated to the writer in Jun 1946, that Ezra Duel build the brick house on the road 2 miles south of Granville. This brick house is in excellent state of preservation to this day. The farm buildings have a very picturesque situation and make a picture for an artist to paint, with a considerable hill and rise of land just back of them and along the side to the front a little st ream and valley. The house must have been built in the 1790s.

For in April 1800, the Duels moved up into South Granville, living on the corne next to and just east of the Congregational Church. Doubtless there he plied the blacksmith trade. In these homes for some 37 years, Ezra and Deborah must have had their hands very full raising their family. They had eleven children (one writer states twelve).
Nathan b Sept 7 1798 m Sarah Whitney
Olive b Mar 8 1791 m George Lame
Mehitable b June 21 1792
Hiram b May 23, 1797 m Alice Whitney
Noe Duel b. Mar 15 1797 m Zennah Whitney
Sabrina Duel b Dec 6 1799 m Benj. Brown Whitcomb
Deborah Maria Duel b. Dec 12 1801
Ezra Duel Jr b Apr 101804 m Matilda Whitney
Morgan Duel b Apr 21 1806 m Lydia Maria Day
Lewis Duel b May 14 1810 Enlistd in infantry because he did not like his stepmother. He was located with his co. at Ft Jessup, La. nd deserted in 1832. Leon Duel states that he went to Australia, went into sheepraising, and became wealthy.
Eunice Duel b June 18, 1810 m Smith Bullock

Ezra's wife Deborah died Feb 12 1826 at the age of almost 60. Ezra's family was pretty well grown, but he married again Elizabeth Dawley Sherman who was the widow of Gideon Sherman who died Oct 29 1826. She was a native of Rhode Island. She was 28 years younger than he, and younger than his three oldest children. Perhaps his children generally did not like his marriage, certainly young Lewis did not, so he enlisted in the infantry, went far from home, and never returned. Ezra and Elizabeth Duel had a daughter Matilda b Aug 19 1830.

Ezra Duel lived until 1844, dying on Mar 30 of that year at the age of 78.

This information was obtained from Leon Duel, who recieved it from Ronald A Burnger Newberry, Mich on Sept 3 1946.

Looking for anyone who has any information on Amelia Duel daughter of Dirg and Matilda Duel. She married a William Hinderman about 1896 in Minnesota. She was found in 1900 census in Todd County, Minnesota with two daughters Katie Hinderman 1897 and Maggie Hinderman 1899 and then again in 1910 with only two boys Harley N 1901 and Raymond Roy 1904. Then in the 1920 census she is in Hennepin County and labeled as Widowed. I know she died in 1966 in SanJoaquin, California. Her two sons also died there Harley N 1983, and Raymond Roy 1987. But what happened to the two daughters? I have not found any death notices or marriages in the system. I am trying to put together a pictorial family tree and any pictures of them or any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Joy ( Hinderman) Smith jbsmith@brainerd.net

Here is the line of descent to Abraham Lincoln:

Generation 1: Rev. Obediah/Obadiah Holmes (b. 1609, d.1686 Newport, RI) + Katherine Hyde

2. Lydia Holmes + John Bowne (b. ca1630, d. 1694 Monmouth Co., NJ)

3. Sarah Bowne + Richard Salter

4. Hannah Salter + Mordecai Lincoln (b. 1686 Hingham, MA d. 1736 Amity, PA)

5. John Lincoln (b. 1716 Freehold, NJ d. 1788 Linville's Creek, VA) + Rebecca Flowers

6. Abraham Lincoln (b. 1744 Berks Co., PA d. 1786 Jefferson Co. KY) + Bathsheba Herring

7. Thomas Lincoln (b. 1778 Augusta Co. VA d. 1851 Farmington, IL) + Nancy Hanks

8. Abraham Lincoln

Thus, living descendants of Jonathan2 Devol and Hannah Audley would be sixth cousins to Lincoln, with the number of degrees removed depending on how many generations you have to count back to get to Obediah Holmes + Katherine Hyde, minus the 8 generations that Lincoln counted. Most of us would be sixth cousins four times removed or five times removed.

I have seen the Deuel name in western Iowa. Your first paragraph probably explains one way that it arrived there. Pottawattamie County is in western Iowa. Thanks!

I am interested in how Rev. Obediah Holmes of Newport, RI, is an ancestor of President Abraham Lincoln. I thought that Lincoln's family came through Kentucky, but I know that colonial people often made huge moves. Could you sketch out Lincoln's connection to Obediah? Obediah is also my ancestor.

Dear Robert;

The information I have pertaining to William DeVol is out of the Laura Clarenbach book. The individual who enitially sent me the information is related to me as such:
Brothers Marcena Duell and Russell Andrew Duell - we are both Great Granddaughters to these brothers.

There is also a cousin (9 x's removed) I have had the wonderful opportunity of coming across, who has compiled a rather lengthy Pedigree of William DaVol. He is in the process of getting it approved by Canada as being an official document. If or when it will be published - I do not know.

This particular William DaVol had a daughter by the name of Sarah. She married Hugh Mosher. It is through this lineage that I came to be. I can run some what of a check to see if the two peole you mentioned are in the files that have been sent to me. When the name changed from DaVol to Duell, is the part of the family that I am from.

Either way, From William DaVol.........the tree is rather large. I had one person say that there are litterally hundreds of thousands of descendants.

If you are related to William DaVol. Welcome to the vast family of descendants.

Sharon

I think that the father of David and Joshua you are looking for was Job6 Devol, born Westport, MA 5 Nov. 1793, died Yankton, S.D. in 1880. For much of the mid-1800s he lived in Worcester, Otsego Co., NY. By the late 1800s, most of his descendants seem to have been living in either Yankton Co. SD or Pottawattamie Co. IA.

His parents:
Joshua5 Devol (1761-1811) + Martha5(William4, Christopher3-2, William1) Gifford They moved from Westport to Chatham, Columbia Co., NY before 1810. Joshua's estate was administered by Martin Van Buren, at that time a young lawyer and later President of the US.

His parents:
David4 Devol (1722-1813) + Hannah Tripp. They lived in Westport. Hannah's mother, Rebecca (Mosher) Tripp, was a descendant of the Mayflower passengers Francis Cooke, John Cooke and Richard Warren.

His parents:
William3 Devol (1690-1772) + Sarah Sisson. They lived in Westport. Sarah's mother, Lydia Hathaway, was also a Cooke/Warren Mayflower descendant.

His parents: Jonathan2 Devol + Hannah Audley. They lived in Newport, RI and Westport. Hannah's maternal grandfather was Rev. Obediah Holmes of Newport, RI, an ancestor of President Abraham Lincoln.

His parents:
William1 Devol + ???
It is often asserted (mistakenly, in my opinion) that he was the William Devol born ca1622 in Spaulding, Lincolnshire, England who married Isabel Spaulding. In any event, William was in Braintree, MA by 1640, and later lived in Duxbury, MA, Rehoboth, MA, Newport, RI and perhaps Little Compton, RI and/or Westport, MA.

So far as I can tell, most of the Deuels/Davols/Duels/Duells in America trace back to William, died about 1681, and his sons, but it is often hard to link his descendants together. I show that he had four sons, but I suspect that he might have had more. Certainly he must had had some unrecorded daughters. My guess is that William now has tens of thousands of descendants. most in the U. S., amny in Canada.

I found this early reference, probably to William Deuel, in the research of one of his desecendants:

"October the 2cond, 1650. Wee, whose names are heer under written, being in grand inquest, doe present to this Court John Hazaell, . . . Willam Deuell and his wife, of the towne of Rehoboth, for the continewing of a meeting uppon the Lords day from house to house, contrary to the order of this Court enacted June the 12th, 1650."

(Presentments by the Grand Inquest in "Records of the Colony of New Plymoth in New England" by Nathaniel B. Shurtleff, MD ,1855,) Vol. II. 1641-1651, page 162 as cited in the DUVALL-L Archives by Jay Deuel <jay@u.cc.utah.edu> at <http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/DUVALL/1998-06/08984753...;, available on December 24, 2004)

Apparently the Deuels were interested in a type of religious life that was independent of the establishment. Many of my Deuel ancestors and relatives were swept up in the Quaker movement. Most of my records seem to be about the Quaker desendants.
I am sorry that none of those Duell names sounds familiar, but the Mosher last name is familiar. Duells/Deuels often married into the Mosher family. I think that Moshers were often fellow Quakers

I went into Rootsweb sites looking for Nelson Duell, married to Mosher, and found four sites. Only one site showed a parent for Nelson, a father named Joseph, no dates, and son Nelson, "b.: Abt 6 Apr 1809 in Warren,Herkimer Co.,NY." (http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...)

My Ebenezer Duell was born about 1757 and was buried probably in Elmwood Cemetry in Schaghticoke, New York, in 1841.

Now, some of the Duell/Deuel families were Loyalist, and I suspect that relatives who left for Canada or who resettled in other safe areas might have gone unrecorded in family histories.

I am sorry that I am not helping you or connecting.

Dear Sharon,

The Duell/Deuel/Davol family is huge--really, really huge--and I am not the greatest authority about it, but I do not record a Nelson Duell.

I looked up Nelson Duell/Deuel in the index of Frank J. Doherty's THE SETTLERS OF BEEKMAN PATENT, Vol. IV; there was no listing.

Ebenezer might have had more brothers and sisters than I know of, or his father might have had a second family. (Nelson does not sound like the sort of name my brach of this family would use.)

Could you share some more detail? Parents' names? Dates? Census listings? Sometimes when I see a detail in context, it becomes clear.

Sincerely,
J. Mitchell

It appears that I descend from Ebenezer Duel in the 1800 census of Easton, New York. Try looking at all the various spellings of this name; there must be at least 12. PERHAPS the spelling that you posted (DUEL) indicates some connection with Ebenezer's line. When you can go back another generation, look at <http://www.cindydeuel.com/HyattReport.html> for a possible line of ancestry. I found interesting data in this source.
