I'm interested in your Irish family tree, iainavlp. I'm looking for my great-grandfather Patrick DUFF and wife Maria KELLY living in Castle Barracks, King John's Castle, Limerick City in the 1860s to 1880s.

I hope you can help.

Chris Duff

Re: Irish Duffs - PATRICK DUFF of Limerick

I'm amazed that in the 45 months since I posted my query on the DUFF family of Limerick, Ireland, no one has come back with a comment. Two of Patrick DUFF'S children, Agnes Mary who married Francis FAHY, and James Charles who married Maud SQUANCE, left Ireland for England and their histories are well known to me. The third child, Amy, married Jack PIGOTT and died young in Ireland.

What I don't know and have great difficulty in researching is who exactly was my great-grandfather Patrick DUFF. Who were his parents? Did he have any siblings? Who was his first wife? Who were the parents of Maria Kelly, his second wife? Did she have any siblings?

As we all know who are trying to trace our Irish forebears, records are difficult to obtain, if non-existent. Is anyone out there with connections to Southern Irish DUFF families? Although this family lived for more than 25 years (1860-1886) in Limerick, it could well have moved there from another part of Ireland - Patrick was in the army and quite possibly had been posted elsewhere.

Chris Duff

Hi,

I have no idea if I had any Duff in Skerry. I just know my gr. gr. grandfather was born 1834 somewhere in Ireland and his father's name was John, who was a cabinet maker. I only have Daniel from 1857 to 1771 in South Dublin and then he moved to Salford, Lancashire in 1871 with wife and children. My gr. gr. grandfather was Daniel Duff.

Sue

Duff Family Burials in Pontiac, Livingston Co, Illinois

William A Johnston died 3 September 1915 in Streator, La Salle Co. His obituary stated that "interment will be made in Pontiac, in the family lot, the funeral train leaving over the Wabash at 10 o'clock". His first wife was Anna (Duff) Johnston who died 4 November 1889. Her parents, Charles and Eliza Duff, and her brother Jonathan Duff, lived in Pontiac. Could anyone tell me what cemetery the Duffs and William A Johnston are interned? Thank you

Chris, I have a lot of data you could use. A list of children of William and Samuel Wilson Duff. I never proved this line, but believe they are out of the Washington Co. VA - Samuel and Margaret Montgomery Duff lines. I have 15 children for Samuel Wilson Duff, b. 1818, d.1897. I show 3 siblings, children of Wm. and Katherine/Catherine Gifford Duff, I'm sure there are more out there. Wm. b.NC, moved to Smith Co. TN, buried Zion Cem. Jackson Co. IL, probably mrd. in Sumner Co. TN. Contact me at: aduffsmith@aol.com.

His son (my 5th ggrandfather William Duff of Foveran) was also a minister, as well as his other son Patrick (of Old Aberdeen.)
Rev. James was just the generation after my Rev.
Hi Drew,
I have Cornelius Duff and Maria Fernan. In one of your posts you identified her as Mary McFeron Evans?
Their daughter, Catherine m John Evans. Is there some kind of mix-up here? Thanks for any clarification.
Sue Strick

Harriet Ellen Duff and Jacob Haynes Rhea are my great, great grandparents. Their daughter Elizabeth Mary married Robert Henderson Denton. Their daughter, Ethel Mae was my grandmother. I am looking for confirmation that my information is correct on Samuel Henry Duff. I have: Thomas Jefferson Duff-1809,/William Duff,1770/Samuel Henry Duff,1750/Samuel Duff,1720/Samuel Henry and Elizabeth Stewart. The birth dates for Samuel and Elizabeth (1727 +1729) are either wrong or I have the wrong parents. I hope this makes sense. Fun to find someone who actually is related. Thanks! Kathleen Young -kkyoung@pacbell.net

Lucinda Jane Duff, born 22 Dec 1845 and died about 1915, to William L Duff and Sophia Jane Buckmaster, married to Oliver Milton Richards (1844-1924) at Fayette, Wisconsin on 25 Sep 1871 was a sister of my paternal grandfather Frank Duff (1855-1916)
Thank you for the prompt reply. I assume the names of John and Absalom didn't ring a bell but I still wonder if they could have been grandchildren of James as the ages could fit. Do you have the children of James M, William Ray and Mareb (may be female)?

Yes John Edward Duff was a son of John Rutherford Duff. The relevant chapters as I recall are the chapters on the London Duffs and the Elgin Duffs. There is a bit of uncertainty about the exact route of the connection between the Elgin Duffs and the descendents of Clunybeg but the authors in the Book of the Duffs seem to be in no doubt about the connection and the Royal College of Heralds when they wrote to my father about it in 1918 saw no reason to question the conclusions in the Book of the Duffs.

John Rutherford Duff as I recall was a notary who went bankrupt although his uncle continued successfully in the notarial practice of John Rutherford Duff's father, William Duff I think it was, which practice continues to this day after various mergers - under the name Cheesewrights. William Duff married Katherine McGuffong.

Both John Rutherford Duff my great great grandfather and John Edward Duff my great grandfather went bankrupt. John Edward Duff married Letitia Levitt or Levett and their daughter my grandmother was called Letitia Duff.

I now have the relevant chapter from the Book of the Duffs beside me. It is Chapter XXIX Elgin Duffs in London. The chapter starts off with Alexander Duff of Elgin, who 'was probably grandson of Daniel, third son of George of Edindiach, fourth son of Clunybeg. So there is a bit of uncertainty there although I don't think there is much doubt about the fact of the connection, only some doubt about the precise way it occurred i.e. via which brother.

On page 447 it is stated that John Edward Duff married someone called Letitia, surname unkown. This was in fact Letitia Levitt or Levett. One of their children was Letitia Duff, who married my grandfather W J Hawley, whose only son was Alan Keith Hawley, my father, and whose only daughter was Leila Hawley.

We have photos of John Edward Duff and Letitia Duff Jnr. Not sure about Letitia Duff nee Levitt without looking up.

Not sure how I invite you to view the family tree which I have started to build.

My grandmother was Letitia Hawley nee Duff and descended from Adam Duff of Clunybeg as shown in 'The Book of the Duffs', in particular the Elgin and London Duffs. Her father was John Edwad Duff, I think it was, who emigrated to New Zealand. I dont think John Edward Duff had any mail offsping. More detailed info if this is of interest.

John is one of the sons of Philip Duff and Johanna Carroll. He was a lightshipman.

Thank you.
Eileen grady ( Doyle Duff/ Kearney Walsh

We have a number of Philip Duffs in the family. They are from Wexford Ireland and were mostly lightshipmen and mariners. I don't know where yours are from but except for Philip none of the names are familiar. If you find any info on your philip please let me know as family names were passed on throughout the families and there might be a tie in somewhere on the tree.

eileen grady ( doyle/duff)
