Hi again Brian,
I have found a Martin Duffie in the 1851 Canadian Census
for the Township of Windham in Norfolk County Ontario. It is
on Lake Eirie. He was 26 at the time and it says he was born in Ireland. The census back then didn't tell you very much.
If you give me your grandmother's name I will check with the
historical society in that area. They might have a record of the family. The area is historical in that it was founded in 1777 by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution.
Clark

Hi Brian, Thank you for your response. I can't find a record
of your Martin Duffie although there are a number of Duffys
by that name in the Montreal area. What was your grandmother's
name?I am trying to get them all straightened around. Also, my
posting was in error. William Stanley Duffie was the SON of
Margaret Donnelly. I suspect that all the Duffies were related
and maybe even some of the Duffys. The Duffies with that spelling were far fewer in number.
Hoping to talk to you soon,
Clark Shea (who married a Donnelly)

Yes. There are several deeds (most in Deed Book S for Lexington District). The first is for the exchange of 160 acres from John T. Barnes to Louisa A. A. J. Fallaw, Hugh T. S. T. Duffy, Joseph B. W. Duffey, Susanah S. B. Duffey and James D. R. J. J. P. Duffey. The land was located on the Ninety-Six and Two Notch roads along the waters of Boggy Gully. The price was $160. Bounded by lands of John H. Jones, H. P. Fallaw, Henry Sawyer and W. E. Sawyer. It was signed on February 3,1851. Witnessed by Sampson Duffey, W. B. Jones and W. H. Barnes. Delivered to Sampson Duffey on October 27, 1854.

In the second deed, Louisa Fallaw and the other Duffie children ganted one acre of this land (same location) to the South Carolina Annual Conference M. E. Church South. The trustees of the land were Harry H. Spann, E. F. Warren, Wm. Barr, H. H. Milhouse and Sampson Duffey. Date signed was May 5, 1852. Witnessed by J. W. J. Harris and J. W. Kirkland. Delivered to J. W. J. Harris.

In a third deed, Henry P. Fallaw sold 29 acres of this land (same location) to the other Duffie children. Price was $50 and exchange of colts. Witnessed by Zefe Goff and Sampson Duffey. Signed December 13, 1853. Delivered to Sampson Duffey on October 27, 1854.

Henry P. Fallaw and Sampson Duffey witnessed another land transaction between William Gaston and W. E. Sawyer in same area in 1857.

I believe this area was call Sawyer's Mill and is location on Hwy 39 south of Monetta.

A book of the lands that Sampson Duffey survey over the years also survived and in on mircofilm in the Lexington County Public Library. One survey was for Green W. Fallaw, Henry P. Fallaw's brother. You can probably find a number of connections in those documents (intra-library loan may be available).

Hugh Duffey and Milledge Fallaw (another brother) married sisters. During the Civil War, they were in same Troop. There is a letter from them when in Virginia - Hugh wrote on one side of paper and Milledge on the other.

I have family information for Duffeys and few other documents somewhere- while Duffeys are not my primary focus - I would like to exchange information. If this is good with you, you can send to fallaws@aol.com.

As a note: the names in these documents (e.g. Zefe Goff)can be good leads to relatives.

Chuck Fallaw

Just a note on Nancy Amanda Riley Duffie and H.T.S.T. Duffie. It is generally believed that they had a daughter named Mary Lee Duffie born in August 1862. I believe Mary Lee Duffie was actually the daughter of Nancy Duffie's sister, Mary Riley. Mary Riley was married to Milledge Fallaw. I have a copy of a letter he wrote in 1862 to Mary Riley Fallaw about his daughter. I am not sure what transpired when he returned from the War, but believe that he and Mary Riley Fallaw separted. I believe that Nancy Duffie raised Mary Lee Fallaw. She is shown in the 1870 Census as Mary L. Duffie, 6, living with Nancy Duffie. As you indicated, Nancy died in 1871. I believe she then went to live with Henry Pinckney Fallaw (Milledge's brother). In the 1880 Census, Mary Duffie, 16, Niece, is living in his household. Mary Lee Duffie Roe's death certificate list her father as Tom Duffie and her mother as Mary Fallaw. I belive that she actual was born in 1862, rather than 1864, based unpon the letter from Milledge to Mary Riley Fallaw. If you have any information from you your notes, it would be appreciated.

Chuck Fallaw

I have notes from research done by a family member that are based on entries copied from a Bible belonging to Sampson & apparently all made personally by him. According to these notes, the last entry made in the Bible is to record the death of Nancy Amanda Riley Duffie, wife of H.T.S.T. Duffie, on Nov 11, 1871. The notes indicate that Sampson died after that, but do not mention where. This Bible apparently contained many recorded events in the life of Sampson--births, deaths, etc. Unfortunately, the safekeeping of the Bible was neglected & it was destroyed. Of interest may be a couple of entries regarding the Goff line--one is the marriage of Zofe Goff & Sarah Ann Unicey Amanda Levina Duffie on 23 Aug 1846 & the death of William C. Goff at age 10, who drowned in the Big Saluda River.
I have no information to indicate that Sampson remarried & moved to Georgia. If I come across any, I will let you know.

Then it is the same person - based upon your information about the name of his wife in SC and second daughter. My information agrees with what you have. Sampson/Unicey must have separated with possibly some children moving to the Georgia border with him and some staying in South Carolina with her.
Our Sampson Duffie was also a surveyor. He married Eliza Huff in Hamburg,SC which is now North Augusta SC Nov 1862 and had sons Andrew, Nathaniel and John Noah Duffie (my grandfather). They lived around Hephzibah, GA later on. My grandfather is buried at Hephzibah Vance Cemetery and one of Sampson's granddaughters, Elizabeth Louisa Betheny Goff, is also buried there. Her mother was Sarah Anne Unicey Amanda Ann Levina Duffey, the second daughter of Sampson and Unicey Ellis.

I have copies of a letter written and signed by several people dated August 1874 that indicates that our Sampson had lived in Richmond County GA (August/Hephzibah area) for about eight (8) to ten (10)years, which would help me to believe that he had not always lived in GA and maybe came from SC. The letter goes on to make refer to Sampson having a lawful wife living in South Carolina.

Things we have make refer to the South Carolina Sampson, but we can't find proof that he actually came to GA or where is buried.

I would be glad to mail copies of what I have if you would like. I would really like to have copies of what you have.

I don't know where Sampson Duffie is buried. He disappeared after the 1860 census of SC. It is generally believed that he died in the 1860's - as he, his wife and several children were not found in the 1870 census. There is a Sampson Duffie in the 1880 Georgia Census, but have never been able to connect the two - other than approximate age.
Sampson was a surveyor and a poatmaster. Some of his land transactions are maintained in the Lexington County Library. I have information on several of his children. I will be glad to share what I have. Would like more information on what you have - maybe we can connect some dots.

Chuck

Unfortunately, not much except that she was born 7 April 1837 & was apparently still living at home with her parents in the 1850 census in Orangeburg Dist. I have his birth as 4 June 1835 & being in the home also in the 1850 census. My info has some sketchy references to them regarding church activities in Orangeburg & Lexington & indicating that many old records in both those areas were burned at some time. I would imagine you have checked records in those counties. There is also a vague reference to the possibility of his serving in the Civil War which might have led to his death (pure speculation). The family apparently ended up back in Edgefield before Sampson died in 1860, but I have no further references to either of these children.

Yes, HTST was the son of Sampson & Unicey--maybe I didn't write that too clearly in my last reply--& he was born in 1833 & married Amanda Riley 2 March 1856.
As for Patrick, I assume you're referring to Hugh Patrick (there are so many Hugh's & Patrick's in this line, it is confusing to say the least) ie, Sampson's father was Hugh & Hugh's father was Patrick, who was killed at the battle of Fishdam Ford in 1780 (Revolutionary War. My info indicates Hugh Patrick was the son of John Duffey, who was Sampson's brother, & was born in 1836, died 1910. He served in the Civil War & he & Nancy lived & farmed near Denny's Crossroads in Saluda Co.
The only info I have on Sampson's first wife is that her first name was Behethland (no record of last name), they married in 1821 & she died nine months later, presumably during childbirth (no child indicated).
As I said earlier, most of my info is from research done by other relatives plus "word of mouth", but most of the facts seem to support one another.

Hey Boyd:
I have Hugh Thomas Sampson Timothy Duffey as being a son of Sampson and Unicey Duffey. I have him being born about 1833 - which would have made Nancy Emaline 8 years old at the time. I also have a copy of a deed where (I believe) the cildren of Sampson Duffey conveyed an acre of land to a church - one of the children had the initials H. T. S. T. Duffey - as I remeber. I also show Hugh Thomas Sampson Timothy Duffey marrying Nancy Ananda Riley -- Milledge Fallaw married her sister, Mary. There is a letter (Hugh wrote on one side of the paper and Milledge on the other)from Virginia during Civil War. I have a transcript of the letter. Let me know what you think - also do you have the name of Sampson's first wife -- or any more info on Patrick Duffey? Chuck Fallaw

Don't know if you've found any more info since your posting, but info I have indicates Sampson (last name spelled Duffey at the time) was born in 1804 in Edgefield Co, SC. , died in 1860. His second wife, Unicey was born in 1795. Their daughter, Nancy Emaline, born 1825, married Hugh Patrick Duffey, who was her first cousin, the son of John A Duffey who was Sampson's brother (quite a commoon occurence in those times). Their son, Hugh Thomas Sampson Timothy Duffey married Nancy Amanda Riley; & he died 1n 1862 at Petersburg, VA. I have quite a bit of info on the Duffey/Duffie family, primarily from oral history & research done by other relatives. I am a fifth generation direct descendant of Sampson.

Clarie A. P. Duffie

Duffie', Claire A.P.
Passed away June 18, 2003, at age 85 from cancer. A Placentia resident for 33 years, he was elected to several terms as member of the Republican Central Committee and had served on the Orange County Grand Jury. A bemedaled WW II hero, he served in the European theater as a Fighter Pilot in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a Lt. Col. in 1957. A graduate of the class of '42 from West Point, he received his MBA from George Washington University and later became an aerospace engineer. Loved by all, "Duff" was an active, warm, and inspiring man with an endearing smile who will be missed by all who knew him. Tentative arrangements are a service at an airport where he will have his "last flight" on August 18, 2003. Lunch will then follow at the Dana Point Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, contributions to VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund at 333 S. Anita Dr., Ste. 950, Orange, CA 92868 would be appreciated.
Published in the Los Angeles Times on 6/29/2003.
