Priscilla Duffield (b. 1837 to Simon & Mary Penn Duffield, Gloucester Cty NJ)

Priscilla Duffield was born in 1837 to Simon Duffield and Mary Penn, in Gloucester County, New Jersey. As far as I know, she was their only child.

The 1880 census has her mother living with a granddaughter, Mamie Simmerman [see 1880 US census, New Jersey, Gloucester County, Glassboro Township, microfilm series T9, film 781, supervisor's district 3, enumeration district 94, page 386A = 37 handwritten]. I have found Jacob and Priscilla Simmerman in the 1860 - 1880 censuses--in 1860 and 1870, with a daughter Mary (the right age to be Mamie), and in 1880 with a son Wilbur.

I therefore suspect that Priscilla Duffield married Jacob Simmerman and had at least those two children.

Can anyone confirm (or disconfirm) that guess? Can anyone supply any more information?

(My interest is primarily because of Mary Penn Duffield, daughter of my great x 3 grandparents Abraham and Catharine (Boqua) Penn. But I'm interested in all their descendents; contact me for more information.)

Thanks,

Harry

I am a grandson of Charles Duffill, brother of Thomas William George Duffill. Both were ship's masters. Thomas was master of the Wilson Line ship "Ebro" which was off Messina on the night of the earthquake of 1908. For services rendered to survivors of the earthquake, he was made an Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy....

Whitehall, July 21,1910.

The KING has been pleased to give and grant unto the undermentioned gentlemen His Majesty's Royal licence and authority to accept and wear Decorations (as stated against their respective names), which have been conferred upon them by His Majesty the King of Italy, in recognition of valuable services rendered by them on the occasion of the recent earthquake in Southern Italy:—

Mr. Thomas William George Duffill, Master.
Officer of the Order of the Crown of Italy.
SS Ebro

I don't know what happened to my father's uncle Thomas when he left the sea. I don't think he emigrated. There is a photograph of him at the funeral of Lord Nunburnholme (Charles Henry Wilson, of the Wilson Line) in 1906, in a book on the Line which I have (somewhere!)

Charles Duffill,
Perth, Western Australia

I am looking into the French Huguenots story. Prior to 1534, the Huguenots were pretected from persecution by the French King Francis I. In the late 1530's, James Duffield purchases Medmanham Abbey in Buckinghamshire, England. I have as yet found no birth or baptismal record for James in England. The name Francis, which means from France and could have been in honor of the French king, enters the use by the family with James's son. The Medmanham Duffields can be traced by their coat of arms, a sable (black) shield with an (argent) white chevron and 3 doves. The family spreads from Buckinghamshire to Yorkshire, to Ireland and then Pennsylvania. George Duffield of County Antrim, Ireland who settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is recorded as using these arms. I cannot be certain that all of the Pennsylvania branches of the family are of this lineage, but at least 1 is. If the Huguenot story is correct James would be the French refugee.

Benjamin Duffield married Susannah Wilson in 1798 Bourbon co., KY - Who was he?

I would like to know who Benjamin Duffield was who married Susannah Wilson in 1798 in Bourbon Co., KY. I have seen references to a Benjamin Duffield from Bourbon County, KY who was the son of a Robert Duffield on the internet who married an Elizabeth Shock in 1791 and moved to Illinois. I have also seen a reference to this same Benjamin, son of Robert, who married Susannah Wilson. Elizabeth (Shock) Duffield was supposedly still alive after 1832 when he died.

This Benjamin Duffield married Susannah Wilson on 15 Oct 1798 in Bourbon County so they can't be the same one unless someone has confused the two in some way. He was involved with my Edward Wilson and his brother William Wilson.

I am interested because I feel that Susannah Wilson was related to "my" Wilsons, descendants of John and Jane/Jean (__) Wilson of Berkeley Co., VA(now WV). John in 1783 and left a will naming 14 children most of whom moved in Kentucky and then later spread out to Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, etc.

Edward Wilson, William Wilson and Benjamin Duffield were witnesses to George Naylor's will in Montgomery County, Kentucky (Mt Sterling). All three lived in Clark County, Kentucky (adjoining county). Edward and William were brothers. Edward had a daughter named Susannah but she was married to George Bath/Beethe. William (at least according to his will) did not have a daughter named Susannah. Edward and William did have seven other brothers - James, John, Thomas, Jacob, Jeremiah, Daniel and Isaac Wilson. Was she the daughter of one of them?

What was George Naylor's relationship to the Wilsons?

Montgomery County, Kentucky Will Book A (1796-1821)
Written 25 March 1805 Probated 6 May 1805

Will of George Nailer
In the name of God, Amen. I, George Nailer, of Montomery County and commonwealth of Kentucky, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God and called to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all men once to die, I do constitute and appoint this to be my last will and estament in manner and form as follows:

First and principally I dedicate my soul to God and my body to the dust to be buried in a decent and Christian manner not doubting but I shall receive the form again by the mighty power of God and as for what worldly goods, it has pleased God to help me with in this life, I will and dispose of in manner and form as follows:

It is my will and desire that all my just debts and funeral charges be first paid. I will and bequeath to my beloved wife all my household furniture and stock during her life and not to make way with any part to any one child more to one than another as it is my desire that my two daughters Rebeckah Poor and Mary Lynch shall get all my invoicable Estate after the decease of my wife.
Duffield in Gloucester Co NJ

There are 3 Duffield girls who married 3 Morgan boys in Deptford Gloucester NJ during the 1830-40s. I have thought about it and I think the boys went over the township line from Greenwich to marry them-Because the boys are living in Greenwich Twsp. Gloucester NJ in 1850. I see there are 2 names of Duffield men in Deptford in 1830. The older one is Jonathan and the younger one is Robert.

But Elizabeth Duffield´s father´s name is given in the Gloucester Historical Society source as George Duffield.
Philip Morgan
Barnsboro, N. J. by Chew, Jesse C., Esq. 4/19/1838
Woodbury Constitution married 5/15/1838 Duffield, Elizabeth
Deptford, NJ
Father :Duffield, George (I believe he was a ship carpenter. The Morgan boys were running canal boats.)
Their children-
7 children -Susan 1840, Sarah Ann 1843,James 1848, Hank 1850, William 1852, Thomas 1856,Anna -march 1860

Also in Greennich Twsp 1850 is Maria (Duffield) 26 married to James Morgan 29
JAMES MORGAN m. DUFFIELD, MARIA 10 Jun 1843 Gloucester NJ
She was born April 1825
Their 3 children are
Christian b December1846
David b abt 1845
Michael b. June 1853
Maria marries a second time to a Murphy and has 4 more children including Amy Murphy who married Winfield SCott

JOHN M. MORGAN , HANNAH ANN DUFFIELD married 07 Sep 1848 Gloucester NJ John M. Morgan is probably the grandson of Abigail Morgan b ca 1778 Nj who appears in the Mantua, Gloucester Co census till 1860
Their children are -
1.Susannah born about 1849, according to 1850
2. Samuel S. MORGAN 1850
3.Mary A.

Thanks for those Jacqui, particularly the Joseph Duffield/ Sarah Fidler marriage and Joseph's death.

I see Joseph's age on death is given as 48 which puts his birth 1805-1806 and in the 1851 census he is recorded as age 43 which would give us 1807-1808.
Now this makes a christening date for him of 12Nov1809 a little off target, especially as there is another candidate for this Joseph....a shoe maker, born Rainow, at 13 Hawkins Lane Rainow a.41 in 1851, and at 3 Cow Lane Sutton a.61 in 1871.
I think there is also a Rainow connection for David Duffield/ Mary Sharpley...I have the following christenings for children of David & Mary Duffield:-
Betty 03Feb1799 Rainow Parish Registers
Nancy 25May1800 Macc. St. Michael's
Hannah 07Mar1802 "
Mary 15Apr1804 "
Jas. 26Jan1806 "
Sarah 12Jul1807 "
Joseph 12Nov1809 "
Martha 27Oct1811 "

...so doesn't look like a late christening....I think we may need to consider alternative parents for our Joseph?

Regards, Roger

Thanks for your reply Jacqui.
You are correct, Emma Duffield did marry James (Jim) Barnes, they moved to Gorton, Manchester where Jim worked at Beyer, Peacock locomotive works; work was scarce in Macclesfield.
I too have noted the David Duffield/ Mary Sharpley marriage and consider them to be likely candidates for parents of David & James's father Joseph, but have yet to prove the link to my satisfaction.
David is a relatively unusual christian name locally so that suggests a possible link with my gt. gt. g/f David.
There is a Joseph Duffield christened at St. Michaels Macc 12Nov1809 son of David/Mary, which gives us the right age.
I would like to find Joseph Duffield/ Sarah Fidler's marriage, do you have this?
Regards, Roger

Hi, I don't know if you're even still doing ancestry.com, but I believe we are distant cousins. Your great grandmother Ellen Cecilia Bowden (married Joe Duffield Sr) was my great grandmother Mary Josephine "Mae" Bowden's sister. Their father was Dennis Bowden from Kilkenny and their mother was Ellen Shanahan from NY. I have a picture of your great grandmother Nellie as she was maid of honor at my grandmother's (Nellie's niece, Catherine D. O'Brien)wedding at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Boonton, NJ

Thankyou. I must admit I haven't done much research recently on my paternal grandmothers Duffield family lately, I have enough headache with my own birth name ancestry back from 1769.My great grandfather James Duffield died at 96 years and attended my parents wedding. I will let you know if I find out anymore Regards Jacqui

Thankyou for your reply. Yes you are of the same Duffield family. The David 1831 was my grt grandfather James brother, the childrern of Joseph Duffild and Sarah Fidler. I see David and Harriet Taylors daughter Emma married to James Barnes. J ames Duffield and Sarah Toole's daughter Isabella was my grandmother. Have you got the father of David, Ellen, Maria,Joseph and James as David Duffield married to Mary Sharpley? I was not sure if these were the right parents. Regards Jacqui

Do you know of any other Duffield's related to these listed? As i am currently researching Duffield's from the docking area. I can go back to John Duffield of 1792 who married Charlotte Elvey but i have not got any relatives or siblings branching off from John or going any further back.

There was a John E. Duffield who died in the civil war in Kansas. He left a widow who was Jennie Baldwin Duffield. They were located in Lawrence, Kansas and later moved to Denver, Colorado. If these match please let me know as I have other info. Steve
