George Duffus, St Cuthbert's Parish, Edinburgh, Scotland. 18C

Researching George Duffus, documented as a gardener, living in West Kirk Parish (St Cuthbert's Parish) Edinburgh. He is the father of Thomas Duffus, a goldsmith, who married Margaret Coulter in 1778, and Robert Duffus, a wright, who married Barbara Murray 1n 1785. He is also the father of Katherine Duffus, who married a flesher, David Buchannan, 1780. Searching for information on the birth and marriage (if any) of George Duffus. Stuck at 1767, when George Duffus indentured his son Thomas to Edinburgh goldsmith, William Dempster.

Re: Duffus, stone carver

We are all descended from Robert Duffus, the wright, living at The Pleasance Edinburgh. He and his spouse Barbara Murray had 5 sons - we are descendants of their middle son Robert, born in 1789. Since Thomas Duffus and his son John were goldsmiths, it may be that one of the remaining four sons of Robert Duffus (other than Robert Duffus, the cabinet maker) - Thomas, George,William or Adam - were stone carvers. Sorry, I really don't know too much about the Duffus family in this century - we are still searching, but as you know, records were scant and varied during this period. Hope this helps.

Robert, our ancestor, moved to Portobello and set up a cabinet maker and upholsterer's shop there which remained in the family, alonwith a shop in Edinburgh, until his death in and around 1864. I believe his son William Duffus had a son Robert to his first wife, Mary Craigie, about 1851. He was an engine fitter, but he did move to South Leith. It may bw that he, or his family were stone carvewrs. We are descendants of William Duffus and his second wife, Elizabeth Martin.

Thank you.
Incidentally,I was recently told that a exceptionally good head of Shakespeare which is carved on a building in Castle Street Dundee and had been above the old Victorian Theatre there was carved by a Duffus from Leith/Edinburgh. I have never heard of a stone carver in the family. Do you have any clues on this?
Innes

Thanks so much - I have found that Thomas Duffus was indentured by his father, George, to William Dempster, the goldsmith in 1767 and eventually became a burgess of Edinburgh in 1780. He married in 1778 and his brother Robert married in 1785. Will keep trying :)

I'm trying to find ANY info on Alex Duffus, born in Scotland in 1804. He came to America around 1825 with his brother John, and settled in Raymond, WI. At some point between 1870 and 1875, he was widowed, and moved to Dickinson Co, Kansas, leaving his younger children to be raised by their siblings.

I'm also looking for info on his wife, Hannah Baker Duffus, who was born in Canada.

I got some info at duffus.com, but not much, and the people who posted there can't be reached by email.

Help!! I've been butting my head against a wall here! I can't get past these two, because I can't find any records of them, other than the 1870 Wisconsin census, and a few Kansas censuses.

We are related to Thomas Duffus of Edinburgh. He was the brother of Robert Duffus, our ancestor. We have information about this generation, but have been unable to trace the birth dates of Robert and Thomas Duffus, or their sister Katherine. All we know is their father was George Duffus, and no mother is listed in any of the documents we have. We are unable to trace back farther, without any additional info on George Duffus, a gardener at The Head Of The Meadows. Perhaps you have some information about George Duffus of West Kirk Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian? Thank you!
Ruth Yeaman (nee Duffus)

My Great Great Great Grandfather, John Duffus was born circa 1756, and died in Fordoun, Kincardine, Scotland 29 April 1847. I am having trouble working out who his parents were and whether or not he had any siblings.

John Duffus married Helen Cruickshank in the parish of Fordoun in 1794. They had five children (two died in infancy), only one of whom, Helen Duffus (1808-1878) appears to have had any children.

The 1841 Census shows him residing at the farm of Auchtochter, Fordoun, Kincardine, Scotland, aged 80 (rounded to the nearest 5 years, as was done with most of the adult ages in that Census), with the answer to the question "Born in this county or not" being "No". As he died before the 1851 Census, I have so far been unable to locate any record of the place of his birth.

A monumental inscription noted in "Gravestones & Inscriptions in the Mearns" Edited
by Alison Mitchell) reads as follows:
John Duffus, South Blairs
Wife Helen Cruickshank - 23 February, 1828 - (partially illegible - ends in 2)
the above John Duffus - 29 April, 1847 - 91.

Can anyone out there help?

What timing! We are planning a return trip to Scotland in March, 2000. My niece is interested in the Duffus name; also hopes to visit the Duffus castle - do you have any information on that? I would appreciate anything you may have. Thanks!
Merlene

Hi! Like Chris said, I'm Wendy. I'm Maude's Granddaughter and James' Great-Granddaughter. Most of what I know is what I've found on Ancestry, with help from Chris. There's a William Hahn on here that's related, but we haven't spoken.

My mother's entire side of the family gets together twice a year so maybe I'm spoiled, but I think it's odd that none of the Duffuses keep in contact. Anyway, let me know if I can help you track down anyone else (or at least provide names!).
Wendy

Hi there,
My Great Great Grand father was James Duffus. His daughter Gladys was my Great Grandmother. My Grandmother was Elsie, Gladys' daughter and Im the daughter of Jim, Elsie's son. I've been in contact with another long, lost cousin...her name's Wendy. It's been very helpful to have another person helping to figure out all this family info. Im sure she will post to you also. If you read our past posts, that should give you some info about the family. If you would like more, I'd be happy to provide what I can.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Chris

So glad the pics went through. If you have a problem getting them printed, I can always send you the originals, just let me know.

I remember years ago looking on the Duffus.com website. I inquired how to add information that was missing. I was contacted and told the website was "down" due to a death, but was never contacted again. I also tried to email a couple of people on "James'" page and it came back that the email addresses were invalid.

I know they left out Maude, Gladys and Stella. Also, if you notice the "two" Gertrude daughters info., they both have the same day and month of birth, but the years are different (1882 & 1891). They also have the same exact month, day and year of death. (June 15, 1964). Seems like too much of a coincidence to be true don't you think? And even if James did marry two Gertrudes, why would they name another daughter Gertrude when one was already named that? I really don't think that info. is accurate, but that's just me...haha

I also found it odd that they would list Percy and Gertrude and their child (Evelyn) and no other brothers or sisters. I do wonder where they got their info., considering they didn't list anyone else.

Like I said, I tried for a while to add to the website, but never got anywhere. Seems like there are SO many Duffus' out there, you'd think it wouldn't have been so hard to find one! haha

Take care,
Chris

Thank you so much! The pictures came through fine. I think I'm going to put them on a cd and take them to Walgreen's or Walmart to get them printed out. Our printer is unpredictable at best.

My sister Lisa thanks you, too. I forwarded them to her, and we both agree that our dad looked a lot like his grandpa James.

Have you seen the Duffus.com website? According to them, James' dad's name was Alexander, and he came to Racine from Glasgow, Scotland. It also says James was married twice, to 2 different Gertrudes. It doesn't list their maiden names, so I'm not sure where they got that info from. Stella and Maude aren't listed either, but the rest of their kids are. Then again, they're trying to trace ALL the Duffus lines, so maybe some of their sources are more or less accurate than ours.

Thanks again,
Wendy

Hi there,

I called my mom to ask her if she remembers any names. (My dad passed away in 2002). She said that Stella had two boys and their names are Phil and Ken. Ken died some years ago, and no one knows what ever happened to Phil. She thinks at one time he owned a Harley Dealership in Milwaukee.

My grandma Elsie's brother Bill had two sons Gary and Dick. That's the Gary in the picture with Maude we think. Not sure who the Bill is.

I will email you the pics right away. If you don't receive them, or they are hard to print, let me know. I can snail mail you the originals if you want. I'd rather you have them since Maude was your Grandma.

I was always surprised that I never got any replies on here. With all the kids floating around and distant cousins, I was sure I'd hear from someone. haha My Grandma Elsie died in 1985 when I was sixteen, so I can really relate about not asking these questions. Like I said though, she never talked about her life or childhood and even my dad didn't know much.

Hope the pics go through...let me know if they don't.
Chris

LOL

Albert, Gertrude, Alfred, and Lola (and I believe Ralph) are Harry and Alice's kids. After Harry died, the family moved in with James and Gertrude. They were living there in 1930, anyway.

My email is p2of9@yahoo.com (in case you missed the other reply). Thanks in advance.
Hi!

Doddis, Henry and Mary were on the 1900 census (Milwaukee). I've seen it as Daddis and Doddis, so I'm not sure of the spelling. The census takers didn't seem to be the most literate of people, so it was probably a typo.

Percy and Gert were 1st cousins, and I know they adopted a daughter named Evelyn. I was wondering who that other Gertrude was. Her headstone says "1913-1927", so that fits with Percy's and Gert's ages if she was their daughter.

All that moving around seems weird to me too. I wish I had thought to ask my grandma all these questions before she died, but at 13 I was more worried about my hair than my ancestors.

I would LOVE pictures! My email is p2of9@yahoo.com. I have 3 pictures of my dad and 1 of my grandma, and that's it. After my parents divorced my mom remarried, so I only saw my dad once in a blue moon. I didn't see any of his other family unless there was a funeral, and I remember going to see my grandma only a couple times. My Aunt Sharon married a guy my mom didn't like and Sharon was close to grandma, so I'm sure that had a lot to do with it.

Wendy

Hi again,

was going through some old pics and I found some of Maude when she was younger! One is of Maude, along with Gary, Bill and Judy when they were children. Another is Maude holding Melvin as a baby along with cousin Alfred, Stella and cousin Phil.

Another interesting note..I found several pictures of all these children. They are the same kids in the pics but I have no idea who they are. On the back of one is Gertrude age 10, Albert age 9, Alfredage age 7, Lola age 5 and Ralph age 3. Any idea who they might be? I probably have 4 or 5 different pics of them, so they have to be related somehow.

Like I said, if you want me to forward these along to you, just give me your email address and I'd be happy to do so!

See ya,
Chris

Hi!

What year were were Henry, Mary and Daddis on the Census? I know that Gladys was married in 1912 so she would have been out of the house by then. I do remember the name Daddis floating around somewhere. And from the dates, they must have been twins.

We know that they were all living in Milwaukee in 1912 from Gladys' marriage license. Then from the 1920 Census they were in Cornell, Mi. Then in 1929 they were back in Milwaukee (Racine) according to Gladys' death announcement in the newspaper. I was going through some papers and found a copy of a plat book from 1943. James Duffus owned 80 acres of land up in Cornell at that time. (Stella and her husband later lived on part of that land for many years, but I don't know if she owned the whole 80 acres). In the 1920 Census it says Gladys and her family lived in Cornell on the same road, so Im assuming they also lived on that land for a while before they moved. I also remember when doing some research that James' brother also owned land on the same road but can't remember his name. Ironically, our camp is located on the same road, but not on any of their land. I've always wondered since they were from the Milwaukee area, what made both brothers buy land in the Upper Peninsula? And, if James' and his family were struggling, why didn't they sell that land as he still owned it in 1943? So many questions! haha

Im assuming that Gertrude (14) at the cemetary has to be the 6 yr. old Gertrude that is on the 1920 Census. I have heard that Percy and Gert had a daughter named Gertrude so that must be her.

My grandmother and her sister were born in Milwaukee. That would have meant Gladys traveled from the U.P to have them there. My Grandma always said how poor they were and I could never understand why Gladys had her children in Milwaukee and not up here.

I do have some pictures if you want me to email you them. One is of James and Gertrude and family. (Childrens names aren't listed except Gladys, but I do recognize Frank). Another is of Mrs. James Duffus (James' mom) and I have a pic of James (James' father). I will look through all my papers today and try to find where I put them.

Oh, and I think we would be third cousins. Your dad and my Grandma Elsie would have been first cousins. You and my dad Jim would have been second cousins so would that make us third cousins? I know Maude would have been my great great Aunt. So confusing! haha

Let me know if you want the pics...am going to try and find where I put them now! ha
Take care,
Chris

I found a few more of James' children on the censuses--Henry born in 1887, Mary born in 1888, and a boy named Doddis or Daddis born in 1894: Was Gladys a twin? Or did the census taker mess up her name and gender? She wasn't in that census, but she was born the same year, so I don't know. I have more questions than answers. Ha ha!

Apparently, they had a few relatives (mostly grandchildren)living with them on and off over the years. In the 1930 census, they had Harry Hahn (age 2) living with them. James was working as a Teamster and Maud was a seamstress, but they were the only employed adults in the house. I got the impression that they weren't very well-off. Maybe they relocated in search of a better job? I can't imagine why they wouldn't have taken Harry with them, though.

As for the Patterson/Philips thing, there was a Gertrude Philips born in Raymond in 1866; I can't find a Gertrude Patterson, except on Maude's death certificate. I wonder if maybe Gert's mother remarried a Patterson, and Gertrude used both names. Or maybe they just got the name wrong. That's where I'm stuck right now.

I always heard my dad's people were from Escanaba. I didn't know they were in Racine, too. At the cemetary, I found James and Gertrude, Percy K and Gertrude, Harry Duffus (33), Willie Duffus (age 7), yet another Gertrude (age 14), and my grandma and dad. Harry is Henry, the oldest of James' kids (the years match). There could be more relatives, but I wasn't sure of all the married names.

The moral of the story is: Leave detailed records for your grandchildren to pass down.

Hope this helps,
Wendy

PS- Does that make us 4th cousins?
Hi Wendy,
Thanks so much for getting back to me! I tried to access your family tree on here, but it says it requires a membership and mine expired years ago! ugh...

I'll tell you what I have and maybe we can see if it jives with what you have...

James (b.1862) married Gertrude (b.1868) on August 23, 1884. Children were Gladys, Frank, Estella (Stella), Gertrude and Maude.

I also have Gertrude's maiden name as Philips...glad to find out it was really Patterson! That really is a mystery though. I have Gladys' and Otto Hahns marriage license from 1912 and it lists "Philips" as her mother's maiden name. Weird they would put Philips if it was really Patterson.

Elsie Hahn McDonnell was my grandmother. She was Maude's niece. Elsie's mother was Gladys (Maude's sister). Gladys died in 1929 in childbirth. Gladys' husband and Elsies father died in a drowning accident in 1932. At that time the youngest child Harry went to live with one of Gladys' sisters in Milwaukee for a while before going to an orphanage. (Never understood why they would let him go to an orphanage instead of taking care of him). After her father died, my grandmother basiclly raised most of the kids herself at only 15 years old. (Elsie almost drown in the same accident with her father).

Do you have the 1920 census? It states that James, Gertrude, Frank, Estella, & Maud lived in Cornell Mi. along with granddaughters Gertrude and Lois. And that James was a farmer. Could never figure out why they moved from Milwaukee up here, then what made them move back to Milwaukee and when.

As I said before, I remember seeing Maude many times as a child. My grandma was also very close to her Aunt Stella as she lived up here by us.

Gladys is buried in Escanaba Mi. at the Lakeview Cemetary in the "pauper" section. Her husband Otto is buried a few rows from her. Always thought is was sad that they weren't next to each other.

That's about all i know about the Duffus'. My grandma Elsie never talked about her past or her family, so my dad didn't have any info. We think it was too painful for her to talk about.

Thanks again!
Chris

Most of what I know is secondhand, because my parents got divorced when I was 3. I only got to see my granny once every few years. She died in 1987, and when I became a legal adult I went to the Milwaukee couthouse to get a copy of her death certificate. Oddly enough, her mother's maiden name is listed as Patterson--which fits since her parents were from Ireland (I'm still trying to figure out how it morphed into Philips over the years!).

Anyway, when she died she was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetary in Raymond, WI. I went there on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to find James, Gertrude, and others buried there (hence my current geneology kick!). My father died in 1991, and I don't know any of the rest of the family, so I really had no one to ask about it. I do know that Maude had other children: Bud, Judy, Sharon, and I believe Melvin, as well as my dad David. Her husband, Burns Way, died when their kids were still young, so she must have been a tough lady to raise them alone.

If you want or need more detail, feel free to check out my tree on here. I spent the last few days going through all the records on here and I've found quite a bit. I didn't come across any McDonnell's yet--are they related? It's such a small world!
Wendy

Christine,
The author of the Duffus website, David Duffus, died in January of 2005. We are working to try to get it back up, but it is going to take some time. If you have any information that can be added to the website, you can send it to me at cduffus@worldnet.att.net.

Thanks,
Chris Duffus

I've tried to contact people through email addresses on the site but have been unable to find a "working" email address. Does someone know who to contact about adding information?
Thanks for your help!
Christine

Dear Robert......... no, I don't have info on 'your' Duffus. I would suggest that you try looking at the genealogies at: www.duffus.com & see if you can find what you're looking for there. Alternatively, the Local Moray Heritage Center is now on line (whoopi!) at:
http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp. This is a great resource & getting better everyday as those w/ access continue to add to the data base. You can search for your Duffus ancestors by name!
Our greatest 'Duffus Resource', David Duffus, who put up & ran the Duffus website is no longer w/ us so the use of him as a 'clearing house' on Duffus info is now lost to all of us. Good luck and please advise me if you're successful in your search.
Gordon

David Ogilvie and died in Elgin in 22/10/1894.

Thanks.

I was looking for a Sarah Duffus who married John Phillips. I think I have found their marriage date. June 29, 1863. They were married in Peterhead, Aberdeen and had 8 children one of which was Rachel Phillips b. April 27, 1881 in Peterhead. If I found the righht marriage date there may be a sister she had ( named Isabella) b. 1838 who married a man named ? Nicol. I found the two entries together in some sort of index that had the same parents John Duffus and mothers maiden name Clark.

Can yo be of any help?
Tammy Reynolds
Innes Duffus Apoligies for getting the details wrong i have posted further messages explaining that in fact there were 3 isaac jackson morrows all related and i found the son of mary anne duffus (whose sister susan was married to samuel cunard ) on the duffus web site alas it was his cousin the son of robert morrow who i am interested in he died at the age of 40 and his wife was put into a mental hospital and their children 2 boys into a home and the only girl sent away to an aunt isaac was a ship broker he lived in forest gate east london to be near to the london basin it is rumoured within our family that a relitive possibly his brother that was given power of atterny to handle his affairs should he die had disappeared with his wealth we are hoping the publication of the 1910 census will help us further hope this clears things
