Thank you Bill- all came through beautifully. I know we have talked before. I feel like I owed you some documents or something- please refresh my memory and my apologies if I had forgotten you. My husband is the son Matthew- of Grahams third wife. I have the actual medal from the King of Italy for his aerial feats! Interesting, that my husband left Georgia to attend school in MN in the 70s. After we met in the 80s and I began searching his family- we then found that Graham was born in MN, his father being from Canada. Very small world in the end. Thanks again!
Dear Luis,
Thank you for your post!! I am a relation to Graham Dugas, actually my husband is his son. I have had quite a difficult time finding the actual Candian link- so I am thrilled to hear your news.

Here is briefly what I know- I am uncertain if Leopold and Susan married in Canada or in Minnesota, Leopold lived in Saint Paul as a young adult. He worked for the railroad and boarded in a room about 1875/76. In subsequent years he is listed as married to a Susan and they have moved to a house in St. Paul. I can not find any record of the marriage in MN- I do know that other Dugas's from MN often returned to Canada-so I think a marriage there is entirely possible.

Susan lists her birth place as Canada and when her father dies in 1890s she runs obits in Canada as well. Leopold's birth place is listed as Canada as well. Graham is the second child. Ernest, Graham, Mary and Susan(Dolly) are all born in MN about 1883-1888

Leopold and Susan both die in about 1895- a flu epdemic in Chicago- leaving children orphans = they finish their year at Notre Dame boarding school under guardianship of a Mrs. C.H. SMith in Washington D.C.

Of course the story goes on from there as Graham Dugas was quite a colorful character. I don't of course I have never been able to find Leopold and Susan in Canada- though because of the Dugas name, I have always thought the connection went throught the Acadians.

I apologize for being so long winded. I look forward to hearing from you and can not thank you enough for taking the time to contact me. We have precious little information on this family and it has been so exciting to share bits and pieces with my husband and sons!

Best
Judith Dugas

Hubby has a Napoleon Duga born May 28, 1886, son of thomas Oliver or Oliver Thomas and Mary Sylvester. Oliver born maybe St Timothy Quebec.
This Napoleon was also called Paul and family lost touch with him until about 1902 when he returned to Mass. after working in Idaho, and staying in Escanobie Michigan. It appears he may have been born in Mass. since his brother Thomas was and that was hubby's grandfather.

Abraham Dugas DNA test results

We found a descendent of Abraham Dugas to do a DNA test. All men who descend from Abraham Dugas of Acadia will carry the same DNA genetic signature.

The DNA test participant was Jean Jacques Dugas of Montreal and the results place Dugas men into Haplogroup J2. This is the same Haplogroup as the Dugas dit Labreche family but the DNA also shows the 2 ancestors were not related. J2 is very rare among French Canadians, found in only 5%. It is a haplogroup that is most frequent today in the Middle East and to a lesser degree in the Mediterranean. It is very common among Jewish people today, actually the most frequent haplogroup at about 30%. It was for this reasoning that we had the testing done. First, the surname Duga is common among eastern european Jews. One such Duga even has theorized his family line escaped the Spanish inquisition. Second, his given name was Abraham, which is a common Jewish given name. Third, his mother's name seems to have been Cassonne or Carsonne but neither name seems to exist in records. However, the surname Carcassonne does and it was often a Jewish surname in the south of France during those times. It is found very frequently in the Jewish records from Avignon, right next door to where we find the highest frequency of Dugas' today in France, Gard. The Dugas men have very few close genetic links, the closest being a man from Hama, Syria. Both the Dugas and Dugas Labreche families carry a genetic signature quite different from that of their other French Canadian peers.

This DNA result does not prove Abraham Dugas or Jean Ducas/Dugas dit Labreche were of Jewish ancestry, but it strongly supportive data for any theory that he was.
From what I can read the info you sent me is a match to our family line. Any other info will be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for old photos of Dugas family members for a family scrap book that I am in the process of putting together. I have a wedding photo of Max and his wife that I got from a aunt in Massachusetts and a family portrait as well which is not very clear. Please, keep in touch.

We are definitely related. I have quite a bit of information on the Dugas family that I can share with you. It appears that several of Maria's siblings also married into families that I am also related too. I have all of my information on the Family Origins geneaology program. Can you accept a GEDCOM file or would it be better to send a hard copy?

I am trying to connect Ambroise Dugas (born 03 apr. 1838)

with Étienne Dugas (born 04 nov. 1795). If this Étienne is not the father, does anyone know who is? Also, who is Étienne's wife?

Ambroise Dugas married Marie Anne Comeau

Thanks for any help.
Paul

Peter DUGAS (1857-1933)

I have located Peter DUGAS aka Pierre DUGAS (born 1857 in Canada and died 1933 in Michigan, husband of Cordellia TREMBLAY, son of Augustine DUGAS and Clarice MAHEU) in the 1900 and 1910 US Census for Forsyth, Marquette County, Michigan under misspelled names. The corrections I submitted to Ancestry have been accepted. Both of these important sources now appears on searches of the correct name.
