Antoinetter;
It was a very pleasant surprise to receive your note.My daughter Sheri, is married to Russell Wilson, son of Albert and Lin Wilson. Lin had asked me to do some genealogical research on a side of the family that emanated from the USA. In the process I added in information that Lin's Mum provided which apparently had been done by your father some time ago. Lin tells me her Mum had not kept in touch with the eastern Canada side of the family for quite some time and does not have any information since Terese passed away. Lin's Mum would like to re-connect and correspond with family members. I was asked to pass along her e-mail address to you: ekhammer@shaw.ca I am most pleased to help.
Ken

Hi Max. When I started researching my Duhamel ancestors, I was told to find the "dit" name for the family. Most French-canadian families had a "Dit" name. My family name is: Duhamel-dit-Sansfacon. The French-Canadian Genealogical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA would be able to help you determine that info.

http://acgs.org/index.html

Good Luck with your search

Hi Max,

To the best of my knowledge, non of the people on my branch of the Duhamel family came from st malo or lisieux.
My people came from Trois Rivieres.

Question: How far back in the Duhamel tree can you go?

Try the message board on Genealogy.com - on the right top section there will be a place for you the enter the surname you are searching. Good luck!

Also- there is a French Canadian-American Center in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. They also have a wealth of information - try googling them.

HI Max, I have since found out the answer to my question. My Duhamel line (Thomas Duhamel Sansfacon born 15 May 1671) came from Bernieres, France in the 1690's to Quebec. His parents were Jacques and Marie Anne Tranchant/Trenchard. Not likely this is anything you're looking for. Good luck on your search! Chris

Thank you for the informtion. I didn't include any dates assuming anyone who had researched this line might be able to point me in the right direction, as Liege is not a popular name. I've tried several different variations, and have come up with very little.

I do have Josephte's death, as well as Pierre's remarriage.
I hadn't found Amable's birth, however, and wonder if Pierre and Amable are not one in the same. Pierre was married to Anathalie in 1813, which I imagine has to put his birth date no later than 1795.

Again, thank you.

Re: Pierre Duhamel & Josephte Liege m 1793

You will usually get a better response if you include a time period and general location in your post. Also including the information you know on their son Pierre's marriage would help researchers willing to help, if you post this query elsewhere.

Luckily my database held the marriage of Pierre Duhamel and Josephte Liege dit LAMITIE. They married at St-Ours on 30 September 1793. I also had previously found the marriage of one child of theirs: Pierre, to Marie-Athalie Fredet on 3 May 1813, again at St-Ours.

The PRDH attributes the birth of just one child to this couple: a son Amable born and baptized on 4 August 1794 at St-Ours.

It is quite possible this is the son Pierre of whom you have knowledge - "Amable" without doubt had several names given to him but the priest recorded only one that day.

http://www.genealogie.umontreal.ca/en/
Membership is required for detailed information, but general searches by the public will reveal a year and parish for events that happened before 1800, and some deaths between 1800 and 1850.

It would seem that this family remained steadily in St-Ours, because Josephe Liege was buried there on 12 December 1820, having died on the 10th. Her husband Pierre is still living, and called an "agriculteur en cette paroisse."

A careful reading of the St-Ours registers, looking for alternate spellings, might yield additional children and information. Generally though, the PRDH is the best source for these baptismal records (pre-1800 only) and has the most accurate index anywhere.

If the PRDH holds only one baptism recorded for a child of Pierre Duhamel and Josephte Liege (pre-1800), I know any others are going to be difficult or impossible to find.

Regards,
Shari Strahan
Genealogist

Note: I am not closely related to this line.

Hi everyone, I am going to be staying in Cornwall (Falmouth) for a month from late August to late Sept. If you want me to visit any of the places that the de Hamels, Hammells, Hammills inhabited; Happy to do so. Visited Gwinear and Breage in 2009, not much to see. Tiny villages and crumbling churchyards. Will try to contact locals next visit.
Jackie

Some of the 1750 dates are out of order in the Contrecoeur registers - see the bottom of the right-hand page:
http://search.ancestry.ca/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&pat...=

That is the baptism of Francois Duhamel, future husband of Marie-Amable Jacques.

Also: There is danger is writing something like "10-3" for a date. What is the accepted order in the US is the opposite in almost all of the rest of the world.

Is that meant to be 10 March or 3 October?

It is always wise to write the Month out.

Regards,
Shari Strahan

Thank you again for the info. I am slowly going through my records and trying to document everything. I think there is a little misunderstanding. The Josephte that I am speaking of is a Bonin not a Duhamel. Her mother was Marie Prudentienne Duhamel and her father Jean Baptiste Bonin. I have not been able to find Josephte Bonin's bap record. I 1st find mention of her on her marriage record. This Josphte Bonin married Louis Amble Dejordy dit Moreau in 1824.
I hope you do not mind if we keep in contact as my French is limited and sometimes I have problems reading the records on Ancestry.ca etc.
I am thinking that Amable, who married Claude Charbonneau, was one of these. Are you absolutely sure of your information? There isn't much space here to fit in the birth of another child since the father died in 1782. Also, the marriage date that you give of 1824 sounds awfully late. These children were born between 1774 & 1782.

Hi, I'm afraid I don't have any further info for Pierre. He was definitely a Huguenot, and settled in Cornwall but I have not been able to connect him to the aristocratic French family de or du Hamel. They were a strongly Catholic family, so; either Pierre was not connected to them or he was expunged from the family records because of religious differences. Only a search in French archives will solve ths riddle I'm afraid. Your son is most probably a descendant of Pierre, as one member of the Cornish family did move to Yorkshire. See Peter's Cornish Family website. Regards, Jackie

Hi kazza50, I noticed on the message board you are descended from Pierre & then James Hammell from the Yorkshire branch. I too am descended from this branch but my ancestors stayed in Yorkshire till the 1880s & then moved to Liverpool. Which of James' children are you related to?

I have a picture of the grave marker that I visited at Ste. Anne, Manitoba last year and the year before and it is definetly 1894 and Zoe died in 1884. They are buried together and share the same marker.

They are buried on the east side of the church. I have photos of all Duhamel gravemarkers that I located at the Church Cemetery and the newer one just south of the church. I also went to LaBroquerie and got more Markers at the Church cemetery too.

The entrance of the church has a plaque about JB boeibg the first "colon" in the area with a oicture of him. I also visited with the folks that now own his land and that of Jos. Bleau, my Grandpa, next to JB Homestead.

Hi Jackie

Thanks for the information which will no doubt send me searching further. My branch was from Yorkshire and I had only managed to get back to 1734 and had just presumed we were from there. It was only very recently that I found that they had come from Cornwall and that there was a french connection. My great grandfather also came to Australia and being so far away makes it that bit more difficult to trace the family's history.

Thank you again for your help.

Karen
