Pse see attached. Copyright is acknowledged but I don't believe this information is currently on view on a webpage.

O'DUFFY (Duhig, Doohey, Dowey, O'Dubthaigh)

The Irish form of O'Duffy, O'Dubthaigh, means black, referring more likely to the raven locks of the O'Duffys rather than to their swarthiness. The name is quite common all over Ireland, though in the south it has been sometimes varied to Duhig. In the north, where English and Irish are given a different pronunciation, it could be transformed into Doohev or, maybe, Dowey.

In Connacht, near Strokestown, where one branch of the O'Duffys had their patrimony, the town of Lissyduffy still remains as evidence of their former lordship.

The O'Duffys were outstanding churchmen, particularly in Ireland's golden age when her scholars and monks had close ties with Europe. In 1175 it is recorded that King Roderick O'Conor sent an O'Duffy, Archbishop of Tuam, as his ambassador to Henry II of England.

One of the treasures of Dublin's Museum, the Cross of Cong, was made by an O'Duffy in 1123 to the order of Turlough O'Conor, King of Connacht. The O'Duffys embellished many of the churches and monastic settlements which were so vital a part of Irish life.

The number of O'Duffy parish priests recorded in the diocese of hlonaghan is quite remarkable. The most famous of these, Owen O'Duffy, lived in the sixteenth centurv and was an outstanding preacher. He is remembered for his
forthright denouncement of the notorious Miler Magrath, the ambivalent Bishop of Cashel and also of Down, who changed his religious allegiance as often as it was profitable and was also twice married.

Edward Duffy (1840-1868), the Fenian leader, was born at Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, in 1840. He was arrested in Dublin and jailed, but because of ill health he was liberated. He promptly went back to Fenianism and was
again arrested and sentenced to fifteen years. He died in London, in Millbank Prison, aged twenty-eight.

In the last century, James Duffy, born in Monaghan, founded the Dublin printing firm of Jawes Duffy and Company which still exists.

James Duffy was a silversmith and jeweller in Dublin and his son, Patrick Vincent, born there in 1832, became a painter of note. A member of the Roval Hibernian Academy, he was a regular exhibitor until his death in 1909.

The Monaghan family of Duffy made rich contributions to the political and educational life of Ircland and Australia. The parents of Charles Gavan Duffy (1816-1903) were not wealthy. His father died young but his mother
educated him well&emdash;he added her name, Gavan, to his father's. He went to Dublin to become a journalist, a co-founder of The Narion and a member of the Young Ireland party. After the party's downfall and his own trial
for sedition he entered Parliament. He was delicate, and Ireland offered no opportunity for a man of his calibre. He went to Australia and rose to be Prime Minister of Victoria in 1871. He was knighted in 1873 and retired to the South of France in 1880, where he wrote profusely about Irish History and about Australia. He died in Nice in 1903. He married three times and had many children.

His eldest son, John Gavan Duffy (1844-1917), though born in Dublin, also became a member of the Victoria government. The next son, Frank, was Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia and was knighted&emdash;as was Frank's son, another Charles Gavan Duffy, who was a Judge of the Supreme
Court of Victoria. The third son was Clerk of the Houses of Parliament of Victoria and the fourth son, Philip, was a pioneer in railway engineering in Western Australia. A daughter by his second marriage, Louise, returned
to Ireland where she was a pioneer of the Irish language, though she had an English mother. She founded and was headmistress in a remarkable school for girls - remarkable in that it was secular and it taught all subjects through the Irish language. Scoil Bhride still flourishes in Dublin.

Eimar O'Duffy (1893-1945), the son of a Dublin dentist, was also a dentist himself though he never practised. Instead, after an experimental period in Irish politics&emdash;he did not favour the rising of 1916 - he retreated to England where he immersed himself in literature. He wrote
novels and satirical essays of which "King Goshawk and the Birds" is probably the best known.

The life of General Eoin O'Duffy (1892-1944) is a strange tale in modern Irish history. Born in Castleblancy, Monaghan, he was a military leader with Michael Collins. He was imprisoned in Belfast. During 1921-1922, When the Irish Free State was formed, he was General Officer Commanding its
forces. He was also Chief Commissioner of the Civic Guards. When removed from these appointments after Eamon De Valera came to power, he joined the opposition and began his campaign against communism, forming the Blue Shirt organization, based on similar fascist groups of the thirties. In an effort to restore his once great prestige he recruited 1,400 volunteers to join Franco's 'holy crusade against Bolshevism' in Spain in 1936. After a taste
of battle they lost heart and returned home ignominiously after six months. It was the end of O'Duffy's once promising career.

To many Irish children Duffy means but one thing - Duffy's Circus. For three generations they have been travelling Ireland with their clowns, bareback riders and performing animals. The ringmaster and head of the family, Mr. James Duffy, died in 1973. His six brothers are all directors
of the circus.

Found in "Irish Family Names" by Ida Grehan

©1996 Duhigg Genealogical Resources
All Worldwide Rights Reserved

No idea why National Trust should believe "Duhig" ("O'Dubthaigh")is of English ancestry. Many suggest via Duffy from Scotland. It is not from either and has a very local and select origin in Limerick and/or Cork in Ireland. Personally I suspect limerick originally with family leaving that area for Cork (docks etc?) then USA/UK etc. for work.

There seems to be a firm link to the Church and to sea/dock work etc in some families. I even discovered a Duhig family line in The Philippines a few years ago...(Confirmed no precedent or meaning in Tagalog etc.) In my case I believe there were four brothers who escaped to Poplar, London, England to avoid the effects of the potato blight.

Yes I do have significant evidence and it is not difficult to research on the web. Start with: http://www.surnamedb.com/surname.aspx?name=Duhig
As for conclusive? Probably close but that would depend on the reason and criteria that needs to be matched!

I have a family tree but there is no single tree, the Duhig's being generally known for being rather prolific...

BTW as you are in Australia I am in contact with a relative in Perth, there are relatives in Tasmania and there is also a book by Archbishop Duhig of Brisbane, available on ebay.com etc. which I gratefully received from an uncle in UK.

Steven.
stevenduhig@juno.com

Kate,

I do not think our families are closely related.

My great-grandfather was John Duhig, born in 1835 at Broadford, Co Limerick (in the parish of Drumcolligher). He was the son of Timothy Duhig and Elizabeth Daly. He had at least two siblings - Mary born 1837 and Martin born 1841. Other than baptismal records, I have been able to find no information about them - I suspect they died in infancy or in the famine. Similarly, I have no further information about Timothy Duhig or Elizabeth Duhig.

A John Duhig was recorded in the Limerick Griffith Valuation (done in the late 1840s) as a landholder in the townland of Dromdeeveen, adjacent to the Mt Plummer estate where the John Duhig, my great-grandfather, was a tenant farmer. I doubt if they are one and the same person - "my" John would have been 15 but could this have been his granfather? In the Monagea Parish register, there is a marriage of a Timothy Duhig and Maria Doolan in 1788 - could this have been a further generation back - who knows?

John Duhig married Margaret Barry from Tullylease, Co Cork, the daughter of Garrett Barry and Margaret Gallagher. I have been able to find nothing much about her or her family but she did have 3 siblings,.

John Duhig died in Newcastle West in 1876 and is buried in Killeedy Cemetry (near Broadford). I have seen his grave -it has an incorrect age at death on it. After his death his 7 children migrated - Timothy (my grandfather), Elizabeth, Mary, James (later the Archbishop) and Ellen to Brisbane Australia, with their mother and Martin and Patrick to Chicago, USA. There are many descendents in the USA and Australia.

I am happy for you to contact me directly should you want further information- phelan@hcn.net.au

Peter Phelan

Nicholas,

I have just seen your message on the notice board and it has intrigued me. I thought I had a complete family tree - at least for those born prior to 2003 - of the descendents of John Duhig the father of Archbishop James Duhig but you do ao appear on it. I would like to correct this deficiency.

Do you know the name of your Duhig great-great grandfather - Edward (Timothy), Martin or Patrick - they were the only three boys in that generation besides the Archbishop? If you could send me the first names of your father and grandfather, I can probably work it out.

Do you want any further family information? There are some early details in my reply to Sandy Duhig from which I have not had a response.

My email for direct contact is phelan@hcn.net.au

Peter Phelan

Would be interested in seeing your family tree if you can oblige.
I am 74 Yrs old and live in an outer Perth West Aust.
suburb.
Hi, Terry. I used to be Ann Duhig and was born in Plaistow, East London in 1957 but live in South London now. My dad was William Duhig, born 1924 in Poplar, East London. Very surprised to chance on this website and find so many Duhigs in the East London area. Very interested to get to know someone, especially if they are still local and very interested in the family tree. Obviously some time ago we must have been in Ireland - I have been told Northern Ireland but they may be very incorrect. Would love to hear from you.

Ann

Have been reexamining a number of genealogical sources along with old family letters regarding the Duhigs of the Tralee area (Spa, Fenit and Ardfert). To-date, have not found any specific records for the deaths of Ellen, Margaret and Thomas, younger children of Michael Sr. and Margaret (Gaynor) Duhig. Would you have any information as to about when they were born? Have narrowed the death date for Michael Duhig Sr. down to Christmas Eve or Day, 1852 (oral history and correspondence). Have not found any church birth records for the older children John, Michael and Maurice (Morris) who emigrated to Wisconsin in 1851-53s. Have found a historical connection with Daniel O'Connell. Will be visiting the Tralee area next spring and hope to conduct some on-site research. Please advise if you would like me to forward an updated history for John, Michael and Maurice Duhig (Duffy). Please forward Eric's address if he would like to exchange genealogical research. Thanks

My GrGr Grandmother was Margaret DUHIGG c1831 in County Limerick. Margaret was tried in Bruff in 1851 and sent to Tasmania on board the Martin Luther in 1852. She had been in Grangegorman Jail. Her convict record ( from Tasmania) tell us that she was born in County Limerick, had a husband Maurice, that she had not seen in 5years. Her father was John and she had a brother James. Margaret ended up here in New Zealand and on all her childrens birth certificates she has her maiden name as Duffy. One her marriage certificate she has her father as John Duffy and her mother as Mary nee Fitzgibbon, Erly, County Limerick. I have searched for a place called Erly, but have had no luck.
Any help or suggestions where to start looking would be greatly appreciated as we are looking to put a headstone on Margarets grave.
Cheers
Lynette, Masterton, New Zealand

Just saw your email thread my father was the last of the Duhig's to live in Ardfert, His father was Daniel Duhig, whose father before him was James Duhig. Most of Daniels brothers and sisters emigrated to England and America. There was a large family there so I don't have all the names for the other brothers and sisters. My father would have more details. Daniels brother David was the only other brother who remained in Ardfert and died a batchelor with no children. We've a few relations still living in the Ardfert area who don't bear the surname Duhig.

Hello to you Ann, thanks for your query, firstly I am no longer local (Born Stepney, lived in Poplar), I am now 74 years old and have lived in Western Australia for the last 42 years, so now think I qualify as being an Aussie.
As you can see from my previous messages I have a Duhig tree going back to the early 1800's, the family being from the Cork area. I have several contacts around the globe regarding the and other Duhig's. The initial Duhig gathering in Poplar around the 1850's to 1890's were pretty well all related, so as the younger members moved out from Poplar to the (then) newer estates the family spread.
It is quite likely we're related somewhere back in the line, William is a popular Duhig christian name in my tree, I can send you a copy of my tree if you wish.

Dear Terry,

I am Steven Duhig's wife, and would be very interested if you could send me a copy of your family tree to the above e-mail address. I believe that Steven is descended from James Duhig.

Hi Peter,

I also am searching for a Duhig in my family tree. You have done some fantastic research to have that amount of information. I am searching for a Mary Duhig who was the mother of Bridget. Bridget married a John Fogarty in approx. 1838 and immigrated to Australia in 1853. I do not have Bridget's exact maiden name, as records show discrepancies, but am sure it starts with the letter 'M'. Either Madden, Marinan, Manning? Also not sure who Mary Duhig was married to. Bridget was born approx 1820, so the Mary Duhig you mentioned was born after that date. Have you heard of any other Marys that married and later came to Australia?

Thanks.

Lynn
