I had missed all these posts, so in the discussion late. I
descend from William and Theodocia BEASLEY DULA, who migrated
from Orange Co VA to Wilkes Co NC, along with brothers Bennett [whose g-son was Tom DOOLEY of Kingston Trio fame]
John and Thomas. Thomas moved on to GA and is probably the
progenitor of those DOOLEY football coaches.
William's grandson, James Alfred 'Squire' DULA, son of Thomas and Elizabeth HULME DULA, was married to Elizabeth CORPENING
who died in 1846 leaving 6 small children. Squire moved slave
Harriet HARSHAW in to nanny the children. Ultimately Harriet
bore 8 of Squire's children. Squire is my 1st cousin 5x removed. The descendants of Squire and Harriet are my 2nd cousins.
Dulatown is a neighborhood in Lenoir, NC, my wife's hometown. It is where Squire set up housing for Harriet and
the children. Some of the black DULAs still live there. One
of my black 2nd cousins is a hero of WWII - Maj George L
SHADE was a Tucsegee Airman and flew 37 combat missions in
a P-51 fighter.
A project is underway to produce a booklet about this DULA
line. I will provide info on the white DULAs and Leslie, a
Harriet descendant, will do the section on the black DULAs.
BTW: It is thought that the Thomas DOOLING/DULA who got a
1755 headright in VA in 1755, and stated he was born in Ireland, is the immigrant of this particular branch of DULAs. Charlie Weaver, Winston-Salem, NC
