Thomas Dun and Martha Adam

I am searching for the forefathers of Thomas Dun and Martha Adams from Logie-Pert/Stracathro, Angus, Scotland. Thomas year of birth is unclear, it could be 1790 or earlier. I would like to know who Thomas parents were. According to my files Thomas' father name was also a Thomas Dun. It is possible that Thomas parents were Thomas Dun and Mary Bertie who also lived in Logie-Pert. But I lack confirmation. I would also like to know whether Alexander Dun and Mary Reid (Logie-Pert) where his grandparents.
Thomas Dun and Martha had many children. One of them Jonathan Dun emigrated to Canada and died in Ontario. Please contact my email address: malcolm.dunn@t-online.de

Meryl Olsen Dun 1935-2009

Meryl Olsen Dun Beloved mother and devoted friend, passed on to join her husband for their next adventure on August 5, 2009. Meryl was born on November 14, 1935 and was raised in San Francisco by her parents Amelia and Andrew Olsen, Jr. The love of her life, the Rev. Angus Dun, Jr., predeceased her on July 21, 1999 and has been with her in spirit everyday. Meryl had a brilliant mind and was a lifelong learner, devouring books daily. She attended the Hamlin School in San Francisco and Pomona College. She was an amazing cook, always entertaining and nourishing love and community through her food. Meryl loved to travel, leading with her husband more than a dozen trips to China. She embraced and celebrated the Chinese culture, building lasting bridges of friendship. Closer to home, she shared happy memories in Maui, Colorado and Yosemite. She loved to camp and backpack and made the best chicken and dumplings in a cast iron dutch oven over an open camp fire. In addition to her work as an educator, primarily with Marin Country Day School, she dedicated her life to volunteer service. She volunteered on the Alumni Board and the Board of Trustees for the Hamlin School and the International Visitors Center in San Francisco through which she hosted guests from around the world. She was a 20 year veteran volunteer with the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, serving over 12,000 volunteer hours. She was dedicated to the Episcopal Church, especially All Saints, Carmel. Whether she was serving on a Diocesan committee, the church vestry, working in the office and so much more, she was ever-present to help the Church. In recognition for this devotion, she was awarded the Bishop's Cross by the Diocese of El Camino Real. Her complex and talented spirit will live on in her three children: Andrew Dun, Calvert Dun, and Peggy Dun Haney; and her five grandchildren: Lindsay, Drew, Henry, Alexander and Alena. Her family invites you to a celebration of her life on Sunday, August 9th, 3:00 pm at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8th & Dolores, in Carmel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to All Saints Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1296, Carmel, CA 93921 or the Community Hospital Foundation, 1000 Munras Avenue, Suite 200, Monterey, CA 93940.

Published in San Francisco Chronicle on August 7, 2009

Borders Duns

it's a long shot but I don't suppose you have any info on my husband's GGG Grandfather George Dun (m. Eupehmia Lees? He is the common ancestor of pretty much all the Duns still in the Borders but I can find very little on him. He's in the 1841 census age apparently 80. He died later that year I believe. If he was born around 1761 could have been the son of George Dun & Jean Scot and born in Selkirk. Years ago I also for some reason picked out an Andrew Dun who died in 1794 as a possible ancestor but I don't have any record of why. Any help would be much appreciated as I have drawn a blank.

I have a William Dunn (born about 1820 Ireland)on an 1870 Fed. Census in Taunton,Bristol Co., Massachusetts. His wife is Margaret(Ryan)(also born Ireland about 1825) Children:Patrick 19, John 17, Michael 14, Mary 4. All children born Mass. Michael ended up in Cherokee County Iowa. We are trying to connect him to other Dunn's in the Cherokee area but believe we need to go back to Ireland to do it. I can't find anything beyond 1870 for this family. Does it connect to your's in any way?
Sir Patrick Dun, Dublin, Ireland b.1642. MP, Army physician, d.1713

1642. Sir Patrick Dun, was b. in Aberdeen in Jan 1642.
He was a graduate both of Dublin and Oxford. He appears to have early settled in Ireland.
1681. In June he was chosen first President of the College of Physicians.
1688 he was made Physician to the Army in Ireland, and in that capacity was present at many of the engagements in the War of 1689-'91.
1692 He entered Parliament as member for Killileagh - a borough under the influence of his friends the Hamiltons, but appears to have made little figure in the House.
1696 he was knighted.
1705 was appointed Physician-General to the Army.
1713 He died 24th May 1713, aged 71, and was buried in St. Michan's Church. He left bequests for the foundation of medical professorships; these were so far diverted from his intention by the Irish Parliament as to be applied to the erection of a great Dublin hospital called after him.
1816 hospital finished.
His library is preserved in the College of Physicians, Dublin, where also may be seen a fine portrait of him by Kneller.

My father, Lt. William "Bill" Sells Dun, was an Army Reserve member called into active duty in 1941. He was a civil engineer. He served briefly at Wright Field (now Wright Patterson AFB) before going to Puerto Rico until about 1944, when a spot on his lung was detected. He was then sent to Alaska where he served in the Aleutians and in mainland Alaska. At the end of the war, he stayed in Alaska and worked as an engineer for the city of Fairbanks. He was born in February, 1904 and died in November, 1993. Is this your father's Lt. Dun?

Replying to Slanton post: Do you Know of a Mary Ann in the Dunn family Tree born abt 1835-Sommerville-Morgan Co. married a James Pickney Prince about 1855. Don't know her maiden name but think her mother was a Dunn and she may have been a Dunn too.She and James moved to AR around 1870s and devorcied and she used the Dunn name for a while. I think i have run across a James Dunn but don't know if they are connected. Peggy Rounds

I seek information on an A.J. Dun who was in southern Mississippi around the end of the US Civil War...

There is a listing in the Zachariah Gieger Bible for a child that appears to be Mateopolis Clifton Dun (it could be Ma Teopolis William Dun) who was born in 1864 and it says "first Son of A.J. Dun" The handwriting is very hard to read because they used a Quill and the ink smudged...

Zachariah Gieger lived in Covington County near Collins. The entry is in a section with other non-family members and we presumed that the entry was for a Slave-girl who was brought by Zachariah's father, Jessie Gieger, when he migrated from GA about 1814. She was supposed to be 10 years old at that time and a nursemaid to Zachariah, however, recently discovered copies of the handwritten pages reveal that the Transcribers miss-read the entry when they sent the transcription to the MS Genealogical Society for publication in "Cemetery and Bible Records" Vol II in 1954...They also left out the "First Son of A.J. Dun"

I have checked the "Covington County Cemetery Census" which was published in 2000 but neither A.J. Dun nor Mateopolis Clifton Dun is included...

Would like to correspond privately with anyone who can help identify these individuals...

Does anyone have any idea who this individual might be???

The name is listed in the Zachariah Gieger Bible, spelled with one 'n' but, of course, it could correctly even have an 'e' on the end. (Dune/Dunn/Dunne)

The individual would be of 'parenting age' in 1864, so if it is a male, he might be as old as 60??? or more; however, if a female, between the ages of 16 and 40. My guess is that a female would be in her late teens to early twenties, because of the phrase, "First son of A.J. Dun"...

I have checked the 1860 & 1870 US Census for MS without results

He/she could have been a freed-slave, farm-hand, or a neighbor, but it is a mystery which I need to resolve...

Anyone able to help???

Hi,
My name is Steve Johnson. I Was doing a search and came across your web board message about the Dun family. I'm looking for a "first name forgotten" Lieutenant Dun
My father "Gilbert Johnson" and I have been going over his memories of WWII, he was a member of the Army's 1285th Combat Engineer Battalion. We were looking at some pictures of his old unit today and I asked him if he remembered any of the others in the pictures names. His was one of the names he recalled.
By any chance is do you know of him, he would have been born in the late teens or eary 20's? If so, is he alive? would he care to correspond with my father via phone, mail or internet? My father has photos of the army unit that I would gladly scan and email you would like.
Thank you very much for your time
Happy Holidays
Steve
