Hi, and thank you for your message, which I just found today. I am still learning how to use message boards. Thank you for the information on the Cotherns and my mother, Leta Dunaway Palumbo, as well as Her father, Parham A Dunaway. It seems as if the Dunaways, Burnettes, Cotherns, Beards, Boyd's, and Thornhills migrated into Mississippi about the same time and settled Old Pike County. Any information you could provide on the Boyd connection would be very helpful. I, too, am 64, and wish I had recorded information passed on by grandparents and relatives when I was much younger! My full name is Lewis Anthony Palumbo, and I go by Tony. Again, thank you!

This has been a great message board. I have Joseph Dunaway married to Catherine McCullough, but I have his birth being 1788. I also show his father as William Dunaway, who migrated from Bedford, Virginia to Georgia after the Revolution on receipt of land grants for service. His Georgia lands were in the Wilkes County and Warren, Georgia vicinities. William was born in 1751 in Virginia. He died in 1831. He was married to Nancy James, b. 1759 and d.1850. William was son of Isaac Dunaway.

Hi, my Great Grandmother was Azalee Dunaway Beard; she married James Monroe Beard and had my grandfather, James Chester Beard, Jerome Dunaway, Geraldine Beard, Doris Beard, Gloria Faye Beard and Bobby Beard. My Grandfather, James Chester Beard, was born in Hammond Louisiana. His daughter, Shelia Diane Beard, was born in Sept 1955 in McComb MS. My Grandaddy (James Chester Beard) used to talk about his Uncle Floyd Dunaway who had a big farm in Pike Co MS. He also mentioned that we were kin to the Boyds. My Great Grandmother Azalee Allen or Alley Dunaway Beard is buried in Olive Branch MS. Does any of this ring a bell?
Thanks,
Jennifer
White Bluff TN

Hi Tpal,
I started this thread six or seven years ago. If you haven't already done so, go back to the very beginning of this thread. At the time, I was looking for the parents of Joseph DUNAWAY b. Abt. 1801, and those of his wife, Catherine McCULLOUGH. I've gotten NO further back in all of these years. They have both been brick walls for me.
You were correct, there are BOYDS in the DUNAWAY ancestry. There are also BEARDS AND GULLEDGES.
By now, you probably have all of the below, but in case you don't, there might be a clue in here somewhere that will help you.
I descend from Joseph and Catherine's granddaughter, Delilah Ann DUNAWAY b. 12 Aug 1848 in Carter's Creek, Pike, MS. Delilah Ann is the daughter of Joseph and Catherine's son William (Franklinton) DUNAWAY b. 15 Sept 1827 near Columbia, Marion, Mississippi and his wife, Sarah "Sally" Rachael BOYD, b. 20 Feb 1833 in Columbia, Marion, MS.
William's father and mother were Joseph and Catherine, my "brick walls."
Sarah Rachael BOYD'S parents were William M. BOYD b. 20 Oct 1813 and Mary Elizabeth BEARD b. Abt 1814 probably in TN. Both died in Marion/Pike, MS - OR Maybe = James M. BOYD B. 2 JAN 1804, GA AND MARTHA (PATSY) GULLEDGE b. Abt. 1810, probably in MS.
I am researching information on Jonathan Y. Dunaway and his wife S.E. Dunaway. I don't have her full name at this time. I believe she may be a second wife, but I'm not sure of that either. My father, Willard Dunaway, was born to George W. Dunaway and Beda Adell Bullock in 1921. George was born August 12, 1870s (1872 or 74). According to what I have located his father was Jonathan. I don't know who his parents were. It may be that his parents were born in Georgia. I don't know if this is any relation to your search . . . My dad was born in Brookhaven, Lincoln County. I know there were (are) relatives in surrounding areas, including Pike County. I do know that my dad told me he was related to some Thornhills. I'm a novice and doing my best to get info. Maybe you have something for me. Thanks. Linda Dunaway Townsend

Hi, just saw your post and think I may be able to help you. I was raised in the Enon Community you speak of. I've heard my Mother talk about Leta Palumbo and Parham Dunaway. Actually, I think I may have met your mother at some point at Enon Baptist Church. My Mother is Doris Faye Boyd Alford. Her age is 84. My name is Dinah Lynn Alford McPhearson. My age is 64. I definitely knew Mr. Esthel, his wife, and his daughter Violet Ray, who had polio. One of my uncles married Pearl Cothern and I believe it's her family of "Cothern's" you are looking for. I'm new to this. Maybe the language I speak is rather elementary, genealogically speaking, but I would love to help you!

From the book "Pike County Mississippi 1798-1876 Pioneer Families and Confederate Soldiers" by Luke W Conerly 1909. Page 44. William Cothern married Nancey Gates, from Georgia, and settled the Turnipseed place on the east side of Topisaw, five miles north of Holmesville, in 1815. They were the parents of Elijah Cothern, who married Cathorine Dunaway, daughter of Johnathan Dunaway, and they were the parents of John, Joseph, and William Cothern.

Have not really found much information on Goldie except she married Claud Poole 7 Sept 1913 in Wickliffe, Ballard Co. with "father's consent." They were both residents of Barlow, Ballard Co., KY.

She's listed as Allen and Mary Alice's Pearcy's granddaughter on 1910 census age 14 born in KY with father born in TN and mother in KY. I cannot find Allen Pearcy on the 1880 census (he's single in 1870)so there had to be a daughter with a previous wife I think. He did not marry Mary Alice until 1886 so any daughter they had would be too young to give birth to Goldie c. 1896.

I don't know if Ballard Co. would have any additional records regarding that marriage that may give her parents' names. You might try contacting Ballard Co. genealogy or history society for suggestions. I would also keep trying to find 1880 census

Here is some information I received from another person researching the Minerva Dunaway:

A quote from a letter:
"I was told that the Indian blood in the Dunaway's came from Angeline Sanders. I heard it was Chickasaw. There was the Natchez Indians, Chickasaw and Choctaw in this area".

Angeline Sanders was a daughter on Nathan Sanders and Cynthia Bennett. Nathan Sanders lived in Lawrence County, Mississippi and William Morgan and Angeline lived in Pike County, Mississippi.

Hope this helps a little.

Jonathan YOUNG Dunaway

In my search for facts on Pike County, Mississippi pioneers Jonathan Dunaway (1785, S.C.) and his wife, Elizabeth oDenniss (1786, N.C/GA), I found a Jonathan Young Dunaway, born c.1824. He is first shown as living in the home of Epcey and Jonathan Thornhill as a farmhand, in Pike County, Mississippi. He lists both parents as having been born in Georgia, but they are unnamed. He is approximately the same age as Jonathan Dunaway's children, but nowhere can i find the link between the two. The fact that his middle name is Young might indicate a mother's maiden name, or something as simple as the name differentiating between him and the older Jonathan. He began purchasing land in Pike County as early as 1851, and was still shown on land rolls and census as late as 1880. Any information you can provide would be helpful.

Jonathan Dunaway came to Mississippi following his marriage to Elizabeth Dennis in Georgia. Married in 1805. Moved to Pike County, now Walthall County. Had multiple children, including George Dunaway. George fathered Jesse Franklin Dunaway, who fathered Joseph Dunaway. Joe is my grandfather's (Parham, sometimes PHARM, sometimes Parm) brother. I just started research yesterday, but believe I have this correct.

I think that my grandfather may have been William Lafayette Dunaway, but I just started. About half of the Dunaway clan moved to Texas after the Civil War because there was no way to keep the land and pay taxes, and so many of the youmg men had died, so it was not possible to work the farms.stay tuned for any info I can find, and thank you so much.
Hello,
I am starting research on my Dunaway kin. Once I learn how to do this, i will gladly share. My mother was Leta Palumbo. She had two sisters, Toy and Ouida, and one brother, Wilburn. All have passed within the last 15 years in McComb, Mississippi.Their father was Parham A Dunaway, sometimes spelled as Pharm, and their mother was Annis Olla Burnette. Both were from the Enon Community in what si now Walthall County. My grandmother had a brother named Esthel, whose daughter had polio. He lived to be 100. My grandmother, Olla, lived 98years. I have little information other than most of my grandfathers uncles died in the cCivil
War, and his father was one of the few survivors who died later leaving Parham orphaned. Both Parham and Olla were born in 1885.
I am trying to create their lineage, which I know includes Cotherns, Boyds, Thornhills, etc. Any help would be most appreciated.

Dunaway DNA Match in Ireland

I haven't posted in a while, but just got some rather exciting news via email.

Dear Gary,

I am the Group Administrator for The O’Donoghue Society yDNA Project. I was notified by Family Tree that one of our O’Donoghues has a new match with a Dunaway. Checking his personal page, I see he has other Dunaways who match him as well, including yourself!

I’ve looked through your site at World Families and don’t see that any of the pedigrees are able to go back across the Atlantic – of course, some of you have been in America since the 17th century – maybe all of you, even if you can’t go back that far. Are you aware of any Irish connections? While I wouldn’t have originally thought that Dunaway was connected to O’Donoghue, your R1b lineage I and II both match the South Irish modal haplotype, of which the O’Donoghues are a major cluster as one of the prominent Eóganacht surnames in Munster. Our participant shares the same unusual off-modal values of 12-17 at YS385a-b.

Any thoughts you may have about the groups’ origins would be most interesting to me.
Elaine,
No need to apologize for your thoughts. I am grateful for everything you are doing to try and help me. I am not sure if my Father had a copy of his birth certificate or not and am not in touch with my step-mom to find out. John's middle name was Craigin, I think. I have a call into my mom to double check that. If Dora is listed as the birth mother than she couldn't have died while John was away because that is the name of the woman who raised him. It is possible however that Dora was his mother and John was not his father. If John was away at war when my Father was conceived, John may have adopted him to avoid shame, maybe? I have contacted RAOK and was given the info to retrieve my father's BCert. am sending for it today. I will also be searching WW2 vets and will let you know what I find.
Thanks a million is not enough to say how grateful I am that someone like yourself is in my corner on this mission. That's what this has become for me. Awaiting your next post :) Marie H.

Hi Marie,
Just a note for now as I'll wait for the results of seeing your Dad's birth certificate...just a thought..you know your Dad's birth date and year..did he already have his birth certificate?

Thinking "outside the box" now..could your Dad's brother and sisters have a different father? Someone with the last name Dunaway? And perhaps your Dad's father really was John C Jones......it sounds confusing but I've found that a person has to allow their mind to consider many possibilites! Or..consider this..your Dad's Mom died while John C Jones was fighting In World War 11 and the kids went into the orphanage...later John C Jones returns and re-marries and gets your Dad out of the orphanage.
So..Dora could be your Dad's real Mother's name..that's why getting the certificate with the help of the Random Acts of Kindness folks will solve that question.
Sorry to go on but sometimes it helps to weigh things.
I'll try to find John C Jones in the list of WW2 vets.Or have you already searched?
Maybe the C in his name is Clay and that's why your Dad's second name was Clay.
I await the results.
Elaine
