Re: George Washington Duncan

I am researching my g-g-grandfather, John Duncan, Jr. of Ashe & Yancey, NC counties. John is the father of George Washington Duncan, born in Sparta, Ashe County, NC in 1821, died 1862 in Knoxville, TN. He is also the father of my g-grandfather, John Calvin Duncan, b. 1836 Sparta, Ashe County, NC and d. 1868 in Yancey County, NC, George's brother. Please contact me regarding this family. I am looking over this string of queries and answers and just keep wondering about family connections. I see that you have answered a few of them and thought you might be the one to contact. I am in contact with Dean Duncan and am aware that he is also researching his ancestor George Washington Duncan (apparently a different G.W.) and we cannot make a connection because of DNA testing results. John had sons George W., Franklin, John "Calvin", William and others, and possibly John who moved to Tenn. (married Margaret Wolfe according to messages I have seen posted). My g-g-grandfather had a possible 16 children, 10 proven. I would like to correspond with anyone who is researching this line and share information.
Please contact me at: nancy.mays@netzero.com.
Thanks, Nancy Mays
Rather late getting back to you. Looking for more information on the Kathan/Kentch connection. Hope it helped the Duncan's find George who died in the Civil War. He and my great grandmother Lucretia Kentch Duncan had 3 children. You can find her in the census married to Samuel Jones in Iowa after the Civil War. They lived and died at Lineville, Iowa about 1917-1918.

I haven't been able to find any information on Mary Lewis Hayes. I did find where she, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Robert, and Robert's children applied for a Choctaw roll number but were denied. They were denied and then appealed and was still denied--they went to court in McAlister. I found the court records last spring so that is where I stopped. I believe it was the Duncan side they were applying for but I may be wrong. I have always been told that Greenberry was 1/2 Indian. What has been passed down on your side of the family? I know we are Indian, but no roll number to prove it. If you gather anymore information on Mary Lewis Hayes, like parents name, etc. I would appreicate that information.

Duncan Family in Quebec Canada

Hello,
I am researching my maternal family lines and am hoping that someone in the Duncan clan can help me. There was a Duncan family that came to Canada around 1847 from Ireland. The family travelled with ancestors of mine; the McCook family. They settled in and around Aylmer & Hull, Quebec. One family (Robert Duncan) lived in Hull, Quebec in 1875. My ggg-grandfather (Samuel Kerr) was injured in a wagon accident and because his wife was a McCook, he was taken to Robert (Bob) Duncan's house. He was there for 3 months and then he passed away.
A Mary Duncan (not sure if this is from this Robert's family or not) later married a nephew of my ggg-grandmother, Robert McCook.
Do these stories sound familiar to anyone?
Any help would be appreciated.
thank you so much
Heather

There was no indication of parents' names of William Ewen Duncan. Their eldest daughter was Evalena (Lena) who married James Redman Jeffries, their eldest daughter was Mabel D Jeffries, who married James Thomas Doyle, and their eldest daughter was Willa Mae Doyle, and she was my mother. She died March 2, 2008. She married Oliver Perry Harris, and I am the youngest of their children.
My name is Lois Marjorie Harris Kagels.

Hi Nancy,
I have often thought it likely that my Nathan Duncan (b. ca. 1825) is related to the older Nathan Duncan ( b. ca. 1785), but have found no proof. I corresponded with your cousin, Ginger Winemann, several years ago and she was very helpful. She gave me the info. that the 1841 school census for Wilkes Co., N.C. lists William Duncan with 15 year old son, Nat, and that Henry or John Henry Duncan, who lived to be over 100 years old, is probably a brother of Nathan, as a voter registration found for Henry, in 1902, in Buncombe Co., N. C. lists his father as William.

I also believe that Nathan Duncan (b. ca. 1825) was the son of William Duncan of Wilkes Co. Also, that this same William had a son, (John) Henry Duncan (b. ca. 1818) who married 1st to Matilda Owen in 1839 and married 2nd to Stacey Anders in 1856.

I have wondered about the possibility of a relationship to your John Duncan (b. ca. 1785). I think it is quite possible that he is a brother to William of Wilkes Co.

The DNA information is very interesting! I hope that someday we will be able to make the connection. I have heard that the name Franklin is often used in these families and thought it interesting that my great-grandfather (son of Nathan b. ca. 1825) was named George Franklin Duncan.

I am willing to share any info. that I might have. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

Judy

Does anyone have any information on George Watson Duncan - his parents or siblings? He married Ora Jones and they had 5 children (Ruby, William, James, JD, and Ruth). I cannot confirm who George's parents were. Any information would be greatly appreciated!'

Judy (Duncan) Beebe
beebe360@yahoo.com

We think George was born about 1890 in Alabama and died about 1948 in Texas, maybe Delhart.

The only surviving child of George and Ora's is Ruth (born about 1938 or 1939) but her memory isn't so good anymore, so we don't have anyone else that can fill in the blanks for use.

I know their child William was born in Childress, Tx. And I know Ora lived in Muleshoe, Texas (she later remarried to a guy named Roberts).

Their daughter Ruby married a Walter Clark.

Son James married Edna.

Son JD married Carolyn.

Thanks Kathy. The 1920 census shows Ora Jones still living with her parents, Thomas Fountain Jones and Una Poindexter.

I'll have to keep looking as George's youngest daughter (born abt 1939) has memory that isn't too good anymore, so there's not a lot of family that I can gather information from.

I think the only way yu will make any headway is to get both the birth and death cert. for him, I spent a few hours looking through ancestry.com and found him on the 1930 census in Lubbock County (TX) and I found 2 of his childrens birthdates:
Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997

Name: J D Duncan
Date of Birth: 14 Jul 1929
Gender: Male
Birth County: Hale
Father's Name: George W Duncan
Mother's Name: Ora Jones
Roll Number: 1929_0002
~
Name: Ruth Lanell Duncan
Date of Birth: 6 Nov 1938
Gender: Female
Birth County: Bailey
Father's Name: G W Duncan
Mother's Name: Ora Jones
Roll Number: 1938_0003

There should be a 1920 census for them, newlyweds, as the 1930 census says they were married 10 years.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Sincerely, Kathy Duncan Cawley

Re: George F. Duncan son of Nathan

Hi Judy - I see a lot of correspondence between you and others descended from Nathan Duncan of Yancey County. Because of this, I would like to ask if you know anything about Nathan Duncan b. circa 1786 who lived in Wilkes County, NC. Due to DNA testing, my line has recently made an exact match with Chapman Duncan, most probably a son of Nathan. Also, another exact match was made with a Henry Duncan. I am trying to help these researchers. My line is from John Duncan, Jr. of Ashe & Yancey Counties (b. c. 1785 - d. Yancey County after 1880). He was my g-g-grandfather. The researcher for Henry has been hitting brick walls for a long time. I believe that Duncan males were commonly named after uncles or cousins as well as grandfathers. So, when I see these names in your line, I really wonder if there is a connection between our families. My cousin, Ginger Winemann, passed away in 2002, but she had posted queries questioning if William Duncan of Wilkes County was the younger Nathan's father. She also thought there was a great possibility that William was a brother to my John. I have seen this question posed many times and believe some day we will make the connection. William and Franklin are other common names in my line. I also think that it is possible that the older Nathan was John's brother and the younger would have been named after him. So - I would appreciate your thoughts on all this.
Thanks, Nancy Mays
nancy.mays@netzero.com
