I Have The 1837 Eli Hendrix and Mary Elizabeth Dinwiddie Hendrix Family Bible

Hello all,

I own the 1833 family bible of Eli Hendrix (1810-1869) and Mary Elizabeth Dinwiddie Hendrix (1815-1886). This was one of the bibles used by Ruth Ashmore Hendricks DeVerter (1899-1996) to collect data for her series of genealogy books. Eli and Mary were my GGG Grandparents and they purchased the bible for ten dollars in 1837.

I know of all the people referred to in the beginning of the bible with the exception of "Jonas L Belotte, born July 29,1799". I will look again through the DeVerter books to see if I can find him. He could be "Jonas Survis Lewis Belote", but I don't know how he connects to my family.

Here are the people specifically referred to in the bible (keep in mind that in some cases "Hendricks" and "Hendrix" are interchangeable):

Belotte, Jonas L (1799-Dec.)

Boshler, Jeanette (1897-1956)

Brush (O’Rear), Elisabeth (1838-1865)

Brush, George A (1850-Dec.)

Brush, Henry C (1847-Dec.)

Brush, James (1811-1880)

Brush (Hendricks), Jane Todd “Jennie” (1841-1909)

Brush, John Arnot (1833-Dec.)

Brush (Hendricks), Lida Eliza (or Eliza B) (1845-1870)

Brush, Martha M (1851-Dec.)

Brush (Wilson), Sarah W (1843-1884)

Brush (O’Rear), Susan Ann (1836-1860)

Comer, Sylvanus (1915-1970)

Davis (Hendricks), Myrtle Catherine (1869-1948)

DeVerter, Living (1936-Living?)

DeVerter, Paul Logan (1894-1977)

DeVerter, Living (1932-Living?)

Dinwiddie, John (1784-1828)

Dinwiddie (Hendrix / Hendricks), Mary Elizabeth (1815-1886)

Duncan, Jane (1784-1869)

Earle, Harry George (1890-1974)

Earle, Harry George, Jr. (1923-1992)

Earle, Howard Hendricks (1928-1995)

Hendricks (Charnholm), Adelle Meredith (1932-1991)

Hendricks, Edgar Poe (1870-1930)

Hendricks, Living (1923-Living?)

Hendricks, Harold (1893-1997)

Hendricks (Earle), Helen Willard (1895-1982)

Hendricks, James Owen (1909-2007)

Hendricks, James William (1842-1917)

Hendricks, Living (1920-Living?)

Hendricks, John Arnot (1875-1850)

Hendricks, John Lidikay (1907-1977)

Hendricks, Living (1939-Living)

Hendricks (Comer), Living?
Another story of the Cherokee Duncan with a question

Who could be the Cherokee whose sister married a Duncan?

From this book:
A Memorial and biographical history of Northern California: containing a history of this important section of the Pacific coast from the earliest period of its occupancy to the present time: together with glimpses of its prospective future, full page portraits of its most eminent men, and biographical mention of many of its pioneers and also of prominent citizens of today. By JOHN B. MONTGOMERY, W. A. BARTLETT, J. S. MISSROON, WILLIAM L. TODD. Chicago: Lewis Pub. Co., 1891, 871 pages.

Shasta County
p. 229
WEBB and the DUNCAN Brothers
In 1852, Col. A. H. WEBB was living in Harristown in Shasta County, where he kept a store. He shrewdly preserved the good people from Indian depredations. During that time, three brothers named DUNCAN, apparently of Caucasian race but really one-quarter Indian blood and identified with the Cherokee nation, were causing much trouble in community. They were large and stout and very rough in manners and morals. One day two of these brothers, mounted upon half-broken mustangs, rode into and out of every house in the village, apparently on a wage, but making an exception of Mr. WEBB’S store, as the proprietor said he could not afford to have his goods damaged. They respected him. But the next day, having been taunted by a boon companion wit the failure to fully complete the stipulations of the bet, the two men were determined to do so, come what would.

Mr. Webb gave no more thought to the matter and was upon the second day busy with the store, when with a clatter and crash the younger of the two Duncans forced his foaming and struggling mustang directly into the store. Mr. Webb turned toward the intruder in astonishment and anger, and DUNCAN, noticing his indignation and immediately giving rein to natural insolence, exclaimed with an oath, “Perhaps you do no like my riding in here?” Irritated beyond endurance, WEBB stepped rapidly behind the desk, snatched a loaded pistol and covered the desperado in an instant, while he answered with stern emphasis, “No, I don’t like it, and you have just twenty seconds to ride out of here before you get this bullet in your brain. Go!” Duncan saw the merchant’s deadly purpose and, wheeling his horse, dashed out of the store in an instant.

The news that Mr. Webb had driven one of the Duncans out of the store at the muzzle of a pistol soon spread about, and while it increased his popularity with the majority of the people, it changed the feeling of careless friendliness with which the desperado brothers had hitherto regarded him to one of bitter hatred, which every one predicted would speedily culminate in a tragedy. But more than a year elapsed without anything of that nature happening, and WEBB moved to Bald Hill, in the same county, where he continued the same business. The DUNCANS were as frequently seen there as at Harristown. At a local election so held at that place, the three DUNCANS were, as usual, making themselves most conspicuous figures in the large assemblage, drinking and carousing. The polls were across the street from Webb’s store, and WEBB, being one of the judges in charge of the election, left the store in charge of his partner. He saw young DUNCAN in the store, but paid no special attention to it, as it has been so long since the trouble they had had.

Suddenly Webb felt his long hair seized from behind and a bowie knife coming in the other hand of the villain toward him, when a young man named KIT seized the would be murderer’s arm and arrested the blow at the very instant when the point of the weapon was against Webb’s breast. Foiled in his immediate purpose, but still retaining his hold both upon the knife and his intended victim, Duncan turned to the latter, saying tauntingly, while he savagely struggled to free his right arm for a second blow, “Why don’t you beg for your life?” “No, I will not,” was the answer, “the sooner you let me go the better it will be for yourself.” “Let you go?” shrieked the desperado as he struggled in vain to free his arm, “let you go! I will kill you first.”

The crowd separated the men. Webb remained in his room, his enemy being forced out into the street, and, being unarmed, looked around for a weapon. Several rifles were lying about, but as he picked up one after another, the owners told him they were not loaded. It struck him finally that the statements were not true, being made through the fear that most of the people had of DUNCAN and his gang, and examination of one of the rifles confirmed his suspicion. At this moment some one called out, “DUNCAN is in your store; he has attacked your partner.” Webb sprang across the street and into the store, found the report true and raised the rifle; but DUNCAN let go, sprang to the back door, and as he put his hand into his hip-pocket to get a revolver, WEBB fired upon him and shattered the hand while the pocket and the bullet also entered the body. DUNCAN did not fall, but fired the weapon with his left hand, missing his mark: WEBB rushed back to the polling place, got another gun, and as he merged into the street again, DUNCAN came out of the store and fell on his face. The crowd urged WEBB to finish killing him and rid the community of a desperado. A stalwart miner named RIDGE, who was an educated Indian, also urged WEBB to finish killing DUNCAN.

WEBB would not be persuaded to attack a fallen foe, and the latter was carried away by his friends. WEBB was then warned that he did the most injudicious thing for the safety both of himself and of the community. Sure enough, he was soon informed that threats of vengeance by the savages had been made. Seeing one of the DUNCANS passing one day, he said, “I have nothing to say to you personally, sir, but you will take this message to the young DUNCAN and his brother, tell them that if I hear of another word of threat being uttered against me, I will shoot young DUNCAN in his bed. Will you carry that message?” The man promised compliance and probably fulfilled his promise, for no other threats were heard from them afterward.

Webb, shortly after visiting the county-seat, was surrounded by citizens, who asked him whether he wanted a trial or not. He said he did not care—only the time attending one interfered with his business. The crowd immediately voted not to try him and gave him a banquet in the evening.

During the following year, WEBB passed through the Cherokee Nation on a trip to the East. He stopped overnight on a fine plantation owned by a middle-aged Cherokee of mixed blood, though to all appearance, a polished Southern gentleman. During the evening the following conversation ensued:

Host: By the way, Mr. Webb, were you ever in a county in California which I think they call Shasta?

Webb: Certainly, I have lived there several years past, and am very well acquainted there.

Host: Indeed! Then you must know my nephews young DUNCAN and his brothers?

Webb: Oh yes, I know them quite well. Are they your nephews, indeed.”

Host: They are my sister’s children, but tell me, since you know them so well, is it true that young Duncan was shot last year in a quarrel with some desperado or other?

Webb repressed a strange mixture of feelings and answered calmly, “It is said that he was shot, though why the man who did it can be justly termed a cut-throat or desperado, I must say no by any means certain.”

“Oh, well,” said the Cherokee, “it is quite possible I may have heard it incorrectly; it was only a very indifferent account that reached me. Please tell me all the particulars.”

Webb told them all, skillfully suppressing the name of the storekeeper in the affair, which his host did not notice.

“What became of the villain?” he finally asked, “is he still there?

“I believe not. In fact, I know he went away some months since, I have reason to think he left the State.”

“Well, it doesn’t matter; I dare say it was young DUNCAN’S fault, as you have suggested; he was always a wild youth, and when he drinks, there is no holding him in.”

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, host and guest parted in a friendly manner. Some time after WEBB returned to the coast, some one asked him, “Colonel, supposed the planter asked you the name of the man who shot his nephew, what would you have said?” “I would have told him that his name was WEBB, but don’t known that I should have taken any particular pains to impress him with the thought that I was that particular WEBB.” “Supposed he discovered the truth; what would you have done?” “I can’t say with any certainty, of court, but I think he would have entertained me just as hospitably, and the next morning, he would have mounted his horse and ridden on the prairie with me until we were out of sight of the house, drawn a pistol, and told me to defend myself.”

“What became of young DUNCAN?” “Oh, he flourished for several years afterward, but finally had a quarrel with some one else and got a bullet between the eyes.”
Great Grandma

I'm looking for any information on my great grandma Beulah Duncan. I've been looking for her father and am getting no where. Beulah Duncan was born July 1895 in Missouri, Mother's name is Julia A Newell born June 1873 in Missouri. I would like to find Beulah Duncan's father name and date of birth and year of birth. Beulah married a Glenn Elliott Conn born Sept. 1893 in Iowa and they had a daughter named Julia Elizabeth Conn born Feb 1916 in Iowa, which is my grandmother. I've just recently started looking up my family tree and Beulah Duncan's father has put a stop to how far I go. So if anyone has any information that will help me find my great grandfathers name would be wonderful. I so want to know where I come from. See all on my dad's side have passed on so no one to get information from. PLEASE HELP with my research. nanaforever@yahoo.com is my email address. Thank You

William Duncan, Culpeper VA 1747

I’m looking for a William Duncan of Orange/Culpeper county VA who signed the death inventory of my ancestor, Isaac Chapman in 1747. I’m curious about Mr. Duncan because I’m trying to locate the place in Orange county where the Chapman home stood. My assumption is that Mr. Duncan would have been a neighbor.

The problem I have appears to be one shared with Duncan researchers: Culpeper county didn’t exist in 1702, 1726, or 1730 when William R., William, and Rosanna were born, although many GedComs say that’s where they were. Perhaps, they lived in a part of Orange county that became Culpeper in 1749. But, perhaps, they may have lived in the part of Culpeper that became Rapahannock in 1833. I see where William R. died in Washington VA in 1790, which was part of Culpeper, soon to become Rappahannock.
Can anybody locate these Duncans?

I’ll be a very infrequent visitor to this page; please, if you have something to share, also cc: me at winwinsit at hotmail dot com

Rees Chapman
____________________________________________

William R.
1880 item about Mr. Duncan , Cherokee, living in Iowa

Inter Ocean
Iowa
December 24, 1880
Charles City, Iowa, Dec. 22:
Among the names of the representatives from the various Indian tribes who met in council with the Indian Territory invaders, we notice in your special from that “scat of war” that of Mr. D. W. C. DUNCAN, representing the Cherokee, I think. Mr. Duncan has been a resident of our city, still owning property here, for about ten years. His father was one of the chiefs of the tribe whose cause Mr. D. now espouses, thought not a full blood, and after taking a collegiate course at Dartmouth College, graduating with honors from that famous institution, Mr. Duncan came West, married his wife, who is a most estimable lady, and who is now with him, and has lived among us an honored principal of our high school and afterward a respected member of the Floyd County bar. Mrs. Duncan was one of our ablest County Superintendents, and has hosts of friends in this city.
Early Georgia Duncans from Scotland

James Oglethorpe started the Georgia Colony in 1733 in Savannah, bringing in settlers from England. History books say that about 1753 or later, he brought other settlers from Highland Scotland and elsewhere. Has anyone found any sort of name list for those that came directly from Scotland (rather than from other colonies)?

All Duncan Families

I have just read several statements that seem to disassociate the Duncan's from the OK and MO area from the Duncan's from the AL, LA, KY and NC areas. I feel you all are very wrong. It is a very well know fact in our family that John Pickens Duncan and two other brothers came toward AL in the late 1800's from the North Carolina area. There were other family members that left shortly thereafter and headed in a more westernly fashion. Due to the fact that this was a large family, and some did not read or write, they did not go in the direction they assumed the first ones had went and sorta got lost and ended up in AR, OK and MO. The reason we know this so well is because one of my great grandfathers (Arlander Duncan) sisters left the AL area headed to where some of her other relatives were and was not heard from again for a very long time. When she returned she had married a Cajun decent man and had been living in the AR/MO area. In the 1950's one of Arlander's children visited with the family in OK and found that they were all from the same decent. I think you will find that John, James, William, Mary and Virginia are very common names in the Duncan families. My grandmother was Vergie Bell Duncan.

George C DUNCAN and Amanda K LIGHTCAP

I am looking for parents of George C DUNCAN, born 5/1838 in PA, died 12/7/1907 in Philadelphia. He married Amanda K. LIGHTCAP, dau of George and Elizabeth (KERLIN(G) LIGHTCAP.
Amanda's dates 10/1844-7/7/1916 in Philadelphia.
She was born in Pottstown, Montgomery Co PA.

Her father George LIGHTCAP was a hotel/taven keeper in Philadelphia.
He died 1889 in West Philadelphia, per this OBIT from the Pottstown paper:

Montgomery Ledger, 5/7/1889:
George Lightcap died on May 2nd, after a lingering illness, in West Philadelphia, in his 76th year. He was a brother of Mrs. Charles Wylie and Samuel Lightcap of Pottstown; also of Mrs. Rebecca Goodfellow, of Reading, and Mrs. Col. A H Tippen, of Philadelphia, all of whom were children of John Lightcap, of Pottstown, long since deceased. George Lightcap was in the hotel-keeping business many years, having been landlord of the White Swan and Nelson's Hotel, and other houses in Philadelphia, and the Railroad House, (Murphy's) in Pottstown.

George C DUNCAN was shown as a butcher in census of 1880 in Philadelphia.
In 1890 City Directory he is also shown as butcher and residence is 3433 Lancaster Ave in Phillie.
In 1900 Census, residence is the same and he is shown as wholesale provisioner.

I found a George in 1860 Census in Lower Merion, age 22, son of George DUNCAN age 50 and wife Elizabeth. The father was a butcher, and I believe these may be the parents of George C DUNCAN. Does anyone recognize this family?

George C and Amanda had 3 children:
1. Mary L DUNCAN born 3/1865 married Edward M MULLEN
2. George Morton DUNCAN b 4/6/1878 m Bessie F McCABE
3. Edith E DUNCAN born 11/1881

Here are brief notices of death for George and Amanda from the Philadelphia newspaper:

Phila Inquirer, 12/10/1907 edition:
DUNCAN - On December 7 1907, George C Duncan, aged 69 years. The relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Tuesday evening, at 8 o'clock at his late residence 3433 Lancaster Ave. Interment private on Wednesday morning.

Philadelphia Inquirer July 10, 1916:
DUNCAN Jul 7 1916 - Amanda K., widow of George C Duncan in her 72nd year. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services, Monday, at 8 A.M., at her late residence, 5035 Walnut Street. Interment private.

The Walnut Street address was that of her daughter Mary L MULLEN and husband Ed M Mullen. So it appears that Amanda lived with them after George C had died.

Their son George M DUNCAN married Bessie McCABE and they only had one son - George C DUNCAN born 11/1899 per census.
I found him in Upper Darby, Delaware Co PA in 1930 Census, wife named Helen born c1903. They had married c 1926.

Would appreciate if anyone knows of this family.

Thank you,
Diana in AL
researching LIGHTCAPs

I have just returned from Kentucky where I visited the Duncan Cemetery outside of Stephensburg, Ky. Johnson Duncan, Jemima Duncan and Nathaniel Duncan had farms adjoinging and Nathaniel's farm contains the family cemetery which has quite a few Duncan family members buried there...including Johnson and his two wives. Johnson Duncan's farm was known as Long Grove. You may contact me at memalady33@hotmail.com if you are researching this line of Duncan's.

William Duncan of SC

#1559 Wm. Duncan 00100 - 00100
Wm. Chandlor, John Chandlor
285 #1585 Joseph Batson 20001 - 10100

The foregoing is from the 1800 Greenville County SC census--I think this could be the William Duncan that is my ancestor through the Oliver/Isaac/Elmer Duncan line. I thought it was interesting that his neighbor here is listed as Joseph Batson, and a second wife for William is a Sarah Batson. Does anyone have any confirmation for this? I think that by 1820 William Duncan was living in Tennessee with his family.
Thanks, Rebecca Rose-Cepeda

Does anyone have or know where I can find information on Thomas DUNCAN of FLoyd County, VA? He had a daughter Susanna who married Andrew Akers. Thomas born circa 1780 in VA. His father was John Duncan who married Elizabeth Holtzclaw of Faquier County, VA. I have information on some of John and Elizabeth's children, but not the ones in my line, i.e., Thomas DUNCAN. Does anyone know who Thomas Duncan married? I found where John DUNCAN and Elizabeth HOLTZCLAW are buried...in Indian Valley...just small rocks with their initials and death dates. Susanna is buried in ALum Ridge, Floyd Co., VA. Any help or places I could start would be very much appreciated. THanks!
Duncans in NJ - George and Adeline

George Duncan, b. 1839 and his wife Adeline (maiden name not known) b. 1843, had 8 children: Stephan, Annie, Louesa, Ida M., Emoline, Albert, Clarra, and William, according to the 1880 census. Albert, b. 1875, was my great-grandfather, whom I remember. He married Ellen Davison or Davidson, and one of his sons, Harry was my grandfather, who died long before I was born. Can anyone share any more info about this line of Duncans?

Thank you!

Malinda G. Duncan was the first wife of David Radcliffe Farney, and they had 8 children, of which only the oldest--Minerva--was born in Ohio. The other seven were born in Kentucky. After David deserted Malinda and the family, she remarried Wyatt Hammonds in , Jackson County, Ohio, and had another son there. After Wyatt's death, she remarried twice, first to Isaac Helm and then to a man named Talbot. She died in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois sometime afterwards. I don't know exactly when. Malinda G. Duncan was my 3rd great-grandmother, as I'm descended from her eldest daughter, Minerva Farney. I'm looking for more infomration on her and her ancestry. Any help would be weleomed.

I am looking for any one related to my Duncan family. My great uncle Fred B Duncan wrote a book called Deep Water Family. My Grandfather is Charles Clifford Duncan, married Hazel ?. I know my mother Priscilla Duncan/Glossop used to write to a cousin John Duncan. My mother past away in 2000 and since then there has been no contact with the family. I know very little and would love to find out more. I know that my grandfather was born and raised on the clipper ship called the Florence and that the family home after that was in Davenport Iowa. I remember my mother saying that a family tree had been done and I would love to get a copy of it. If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it.
