Just so this post doesn't lead to more internet speculation and false assumptions, the Duncansons were not 3x granddaughters of John 3rd laird of Merchiston and Elizabeth Menteith. The connection between the Duncansons and Sir Alexander Napier of Merchiston will be mentioned in the upcoming Foundations piece and of course fully explored when my articles comes out in TG. Thank you

ABB

Are John Napier & Elizabeth Mentieth connected to the Duncansons or the Livingstons?

Has the 4 page biographical sketch on John Duncanson by Robert Wodrow been translated? I have a copy of the will of John Duncanson but cannot read a word of it - does anyone have a translation of that will?
Maggie Merrill

I don't know what precisely you are referring to. I have not published anything on the Livingston ancestry of the Duncanson Sisters yet. There will be a short piece appearing in Foundations this summer, and the monograph will appear in installments in The Genealogist starting Fall 2013. you can reach me at adburke at paulweiss dot com

ABB

I am unable to find any death for either in Scotland so I am wondering if they went to Australia or to the USA where they had relatives. Mary Bow was the daughter of James Bow and Annie Jackson. She was born 1893 I do not know if David and Mary had any children. I can be reached at cprairielily@shaw.ca

Hi Cousins: Yes my Duncanson/Livingston Project has succeeded in ways never before anticipated. The Livingston Ancestry of the Duncanson Sisters of New Netherland will hopefully arrive in print sometime next year - I am currently finishing the final rough draft. Helen Livingston's family was closely allied to the Stuart Monarchy and she has several noble lines and at least two royal descents which I am still researching and will publish separately and later no doubt but the upcoming two part article will lay the foundation for those (and other) lines of great interest. I spent time in Scotland this summer and gained access to some very special places with intimate connections to Helen's family. Feel free to visit: www.adrianburke.com

THANKS for the interest!

Adrian Benjamin Burke
Founder, The Duncanson/Livingston Project

It has always been
a goal of mine is to go to Scotland and find the ancestors of Alexander & Katheren Duncanson Glen. It is nice to know there are other family members out there doing the same.
I also descend from this line. i think our family is on the brink of a big break of information. Check out the Ducanson/Livingston project sponsors by Adrian Benjamin Burke Esq. He and others descended from the Duncanson sisters, daughters of James Duncanson and Helen Livingston, (James is the son of John Duncanson and Janet Watson), have hired a genealogist in Scotland and have hit paydirt. Waiting for his forthcoming article on the subject.

Hello Susan, I don't know if you ever found the information you were looking for regarding James Duncanson from Nova Scotia. James Duncanson is my grandfather who emigrated to the united states from Nova Scotia to Maine. He married Lilly Mae Fraser and settled in Portland, Maine. They had 4 sons, my father, Arthur, James, Donald and Lawrence. They are all deceased with my dad being the last of the sons to pass in 2003. I would love to connect with you if you need more information... With warmest regards, Kathleen Duncanson Heseltine, Freeport, Maine

I am the great-grand daughter of Minnie Lurene (sometimes noted as Lillian) Duncanson, daughter of James Simon Duncanson. I have not been able to find written documentation of her date or place of birth. However, I did find the marriage record of her marriage to Henry Melvin "Mel" Etter in Halifax.

They moved from Nova Scotia to MA around 1880 then Portland ME until about 1904 then Minneapolis, MN then finally to New Brunswick. They adopted one child, my grandmother Mertis Belle Etter while they were in Hopkinton, MA.

Minnie remained very close to her brother Charles and his wife Adna who lived in West Brookfield, MA all of their adult lives. I have a pile of letters between them from 1911-1918. Her brother Abraham Lincoln "Linc" lived in Portland, ME and was apparently not so close to his 2 full siblings. It appears he immegrated to the US very young, maybe around 14-16.

I have had a real hard time with JSD's second wife. I have written information where Charles Duncanson said his mother's name was Sarah Ann Burke. His death record says her name was Sarah Ann Banks. Based on that, I think the name sometimes noted as Emily Banks might be incorrect. However, I have not been able to find any information on her.

I would be interested if you have any information.
Marj Golub

I live in Nova Scotia in Yarmouth Co. with the great-grandson of George Edward Duncanson born in Horton,Kings Co, Nova Scotia, son of the James Duncanson and Martha Coldwell in question. My info has James born 31 January,1812 although bible records show a different birthdate. He was a farmer in Aylesford,NS in the census of 1838. He was married to Martha Coldwell/Caldwell first and had three children, George Edward,Elizabeth, and Frederick. he then married Emily Banks, dau. of Moses Banks and Olive (Morton) Banks. They and had three more children,Abraham Lincoln, Charles ,and Minnie Lillian. Abraham moved to Portland ,Maine, Frederick to St. John, New Brunswick, and George Edward to Tusket, Nova Scotia. George Edward had 6 children by two marriages of which my spouses grandfather was one. His grandfather worked in a logging camp in Maine at one time and had visited A.L.Duncanson.If anyone out there is still searching maybe this will help. I also can't seem to find out where in Scotland first James who came to NS, actually came from, since he had originally planned on settling in a Scottish Colony in North Carolina and had only stayed in NS after the ship that he, Isabella and two of their children were sailing on was in danger of sinking. Perhaps he sailed under a different name as it is possible he was fleeing Scotland because of the fighting going on around that time. Anyone with other info..would like to hear from you.

I wonder if you have the correct William Duncanson, as I have Thomas & Nicolas (Demperston) Duncanson's son, William, as being christened on 17 Jan 1719 in Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The source for this date is from the LDS web site.

I would love to swap information with you on this Duncanson family. I have information they had 12 children including William. I am Thomas' & Nicholas' 6th great grandaughter. Please contact me at genbrat@gmail.com.

Carol
Re: James F. Duncanson

My great grandmother was the Minnie Lurene Duncanson you refer to. James Simon F. was married twice - first to Martha Caldwell/Coldwell. They had 3 or 4 children (at least George Edward, Elizabeth, Fredrick and maybe Abraham Lincoln "Linc"). She died around 1862. His second wife has been listed by JV Duncanson as Sarah Banks but on the gun registration card of her son Charles, he lists his mother's name as Sarah Ann Burke. She definitely had Minnie and Charles A.. The birth date of Linc that I have is 1862 (and that may be questionable) so I'm not sure which is his mother. Anyway, James Simon was the son of George Duncanson and Elizabeth Pinkley who had 8 children. George's parents wereJames Duncanson and Isabella (?) who was the original immegrant from Scotland. Apparently JV Duncanson's book has a nice outline of his history but there's no indication of exactly where in Scotland her came from or his ancestory there. Hope this helps a little.
Marj Golub

Hi Marj, sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I will get together all the info that I have on Abraham, unfortunatly, I really have no anecdotal info to share with you. Abraham died in 1945, before my mother (his g-granddaughter) was born and even before my grandparents were married. My grandfather passed away in 2001, before I became interested in genealogy. I will gather what I have and forward it to you. I will have to try searching for Sarah Burke, it appears I have been searching for the wrong surname on her. Somebody must have made a transcription error when doing the extract of his marriage certificate for the archives and entered Banks, instead of Burke. On a side note, I did find Henry Etter in the Portland, Maine city directoriies from 1895-1900 on-line, and I could check others at the Portland Public Library, if you are not from the area. Also if you are not from here, I could photograph the residence where they lived, providing it still exists. Thank you again for the info that you gave me
David Hill

Seems we are cousins! My great-grandmother was Minnie Lurene Duncanson (b-cir 1860) and Abraham Lincoln "Linc" Duncanson was her brother. I have some info about the family going back to James Duncanson/Isabella ? who came over from Scotland probably about 1773. The records indicate they came over with 2 children then had 4 more in Horton, NS. James Simon F. Duncanson was their grandson.

James married Matha Coldwell about 1828 & had 3 children - George Edward, Elizabeth (Aunt "Lil"), and Fredrick. Martha died @ 1862 and he married Sarah Ann Burke. They had 2 children - Charles Alexander and Minnie Lurene. I have been unable to figure out which wife was the mother of your relative but you state that she was Sarah.

Minnie married Henry Etter and during much of their married life, they lived in Portland, ME, as did Linc. The Etters retired to St. John, NB but Linc died in Portland. Charles moved to Hopkinton, MA and remained close to his sister Minnie their whole lives. I have many letters written by Minnie to Charles, some of which refernece Linc.

I am particularly interested in personal stories you may have of your relative. I have quite a bit of antidotal material from my grandmother which I would be happy to share. Also, I am at a stand-still with Sarah Ann Burke. Do you know anything about her?

Look forward to hearing from you!
Marj

Maude Duncanson

I was in North St Paul, Minnesota recently and went into an antique store. I found some old photos with names on them. They are wonderful pictures, so I thought I would rescue them for the families! Now I just have to find them. I have a picture of Maude Duncanson, a young woman maybe early 20's or so. I don't know where or when the photo was taken. She is wearing a ring on her left ring finger, and she has two rings on the right hand. On the back of the photo, it is written in pencil in cursive "Maude Duncanson". Maybe you have a Maude in your family? If I had to guess, I would say that this photo was taken in the 30's. It is black and white.
Let's put our heads together and see if she belongs to you!!

Prosperity is your divine right!
Renee S.
https://www.youngliving.org/charlieaton
