My longtime (15 years) partner is Richard Kenneth Dunham, and his sister is Susan Jean Dunham (now Susan Jones). Their mother Margaret (Hagney) Dunham is in her 90's. They all live in the Ithaca, NY area. Richard and I would like to hear from anyone who has pictures of this family. Richard, the oldest, was born in 1947. Thank you! JoAnn Horton

Danny, if you are still there, I'd love to contact you. I'm the daughter of Richard R. Dunham, son of Dr. Roy Dunham and Mary Ione Linderman. I have recently made contact with Barbara Bullock Rogow, granddaughter of Katherine Dunham Bullock, but she has just moved so what she has is still in boxes (something I've been through many times).

While I have info on the Dunham ancestry (mostly through Jerry Crary's book), I have nothing on the Linderman side and would like to learn more. I would also like to make contact with any descendants of my father's brother David R. Dunham. Evidently there was some family estrangement back then, as my father wasn't interested in contact when David's son Don tried to contact him. Surely it's time to put whatever that was back into ancient history!

This afternoon I visited a friend who was preparing to move to a new home. She asked me to look at a painting which was painted by a Roy Dunham. The painting was puechased at an estate sale here in Albany, GA, The scene looked to me like a horse farm like those in the Gainesville FL area.
Do you have any examples od David Roy Dunham's work, or a copy of his signature from one of his paintings?

Regards,

To whomever reads this (Barbara's email address given here is no longer valid): I am Barbara's second cousin, Mary Catherine Dunham Szabo, the daughter of her great-uncle Richard Dunham, youngest son of Dr. Roy Dunham. Barbara's father, Robert Bullock, is my first cousin.

If anyone reads this, I'd love to get in contact with Barbara who is the only relative who has replied here whom I've actually met, although she was only about 6-8 years old at the time. If any other relatives are interested in exchanging information, I'd be glad to oblige. As happens in so many families, I have completely lost touch with the other Dunhams since my aunt Katherine Dunham Bullock passed away. I'm hoping that Barbara has some information on my grandmother (her great-g), Mary Ione Linderman. I have nothing at all.

I have only two weeks on my temporary membership on this site. I've also replied on this board to Don Dunham who is my first cousin. Hopefully some of us can make connections. Neither my father nor my mother were close to their families after they grew up, and when their siblings died, all contact was lost.

Mrs. Mahony: On the off chance you're still a member of this site:

Were you ever able to contact Don Dunham, son of David R Dunham of Florida, son of Dr. Roy Dunham of Canisteo, NY? I am Mary Dunham Szabo, the daughter of David R Dunham's younger brother Richard. I'd love to get in touch with Don if he is still with us. If you ever contacted Barbara Roggow (evidently the granddaughter of Katharine Dunham Bullock, David R. Dunham's sister and my aunt), who left a message on this board in 2012, I'd like to get in touch with her, too.

Don or his brothers (if any) or male descendants would be your only chance for a male Dunham descendant of Dr. Roy Dunham. His father David was married twice and I don't know about offspring from the first marriage. I never heard of Don until I saw his 13 year old message here (through googling his father's name). There was no contact between my father and his brother of which I was aware, although he and I both kept in touch with his sister Katharine until she died. Probably unrevealed (to me) closet skeletons.... No big deal; I have a few myself!

I basically have no information other than Jerry Crary's books (I have both, and the Richard Dunham/Laura Allen book is online, but if you're interested I can enlarge my portion of the family tree. My free subscription here runs out May 6, 2013.

For Don Dunham, or his descendants: My name is Mary Catherine Dunham Szabo. Don, I just happened to be playing around online, trying to find out if I had any ancestors who served in the Civil War, and found your message of 13 years ago. I am the daughter of Richard Dunham, your father's brother, so we are first cousins! I can give you information about my part of the family if you want it. I an give you a little info about our aunt Katherine Dunham Bullock, but I lost track of that branch of the family after she died in, as I recall, 1974 or 1975.

Briefly, my father was an instructor and then assistant professor at Wayne University (now Wayne State University) in Detroit, MI, where he met and married my mother. In 1947 he joined the faculty at the University of Wyoming first as associate professor and then full professor and chairman of the Department of Speech and Drama. He retired in 1969 and moved to Denver, CO where he lived until his death in December 1988. Your info about Hawaii is incorrect; I don't think he was ever there.

I can give you lots more information about your Uncle Richard and our part of the family if you wish. I'd rather not have it online, though. While I am not active in family genealogy, one of my daughters-in-law is. She and my youngest son even named their youngest child Samuel Allen!

Do you have the books, "Ancestors of Jerry Crary and his wife Laura Antoinette Dunham" and "Ancestors and Descendants of Richard Dunham and his wife Laura Allen"? That's basically all the information I have. I didn't find any mention of anybody serving in the Civil War, so evidently we don't have Civil War ancestors, although we do have an ancestor who served in the American Revolution. Per my father, his Aunt Laura wanted to join the Daughters of the American Revolution, which was the motivation for the research. The second book mentioned above is online here: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/service/gdc/scd0001/2008/20080912001an...
If there's an online version of the other, I couldn't find it.

Just by chance, I decided to google "David Roy Dunham" and found your message from 13 years ago. If this reply gets through to you or your family, not only I but my children and grandchildren will be delighted to find more relatives! My father and mother were neither of them very close to their families, pretty much a "Christmas card" sort of relationship. I never was in close touch with any of my cousins, known or unknown, so have completely lost track. To the best of my knowledge, I never did meet, even as a child, any of your father's children from his first wife, so I can't help you there.

I have only a trial subscription to ancestry.com and don't plan to get a paid one, so hopefully they will send an alert and/or give you my email address if you respond after the trial is up (I think it's 2 weeks, which would be 5/7/2013).

How wonderful it was to find your message. My grandfather is Ernest Bertsel Bogart, son of Cassie and James and brother to your great grandfather William. My mother, aunts and uncles always referred to William and Caroline as Uncle Will and Aunt Carrie. Nettie is still living and my cousin is in touch with her all the time. I have pictures of Nettie when she came to visit in Michigan a few years ago. I also have a picture of Uncle Will and my grandfather (somewhere) shortly before Uncle Will passed away. I would LOVE to see the pictures you have and would be willing to pay for copies. William and Caroline (Hitsman)did have five children and they are: Goldie Luella born 12 June 1904 ~ died 22 March 1976; Lloyd William born 28 April 1906 ~ died 2 June 1990; Howard Clinton born 1 September 1910 ~ died 10 November 1990; Ruby Bell born 12 December 1912 ~ died 20 April 1983; Nettie born 16 October 1917.

I should tell you that I may be suspending my Ancestory membership for a month or so, but for certain will be back! I look forward to hearing back from you.
Re: DUNHAM Saint John, New Brunswick, Can. to MN
There might be some confusion here - the Thomas Dunham referred to in the original post has no association with St John - he was born in St George, Charlotte County, New Brunswick Canada. His father is Joseph Dunham - land records show Joseph purchasing land in St George Parish in 1803 and that he is "of st andrews" at the time of the purchase.

The Joseph Dunham in MN and referred to in the Original post is the brother of Thomas. Joseph Dunham's death certificate indicates that his father is Joseph Dunham and his mother is Bathsheba Scott.

Census records for Joseph in MN - if you examine the actual microfilm - show that his father, Joseph Dunham of St George NB, was born in Long Island, NY. One census lists "New York" as place of birth of father and another lists "Long Island".

It was once thought that this Dunham family, of St George, NB, Canada, were descendents of the loyalist Asher Dunham. Recent DNA testing has shown this to be false - DNA testing proved that William H. Dunham, thought to be brother of Joseph Dunham is descended from Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth, MA.

Jeff

President Obama and Labette County, Kansas

"President Barack Obama, the Kearney and Dunham Families, and Labette County, Kansas" was published in THE TREESEARCHERS, Kansas Genealogical Society, Volume 54, Number 2, 2012. [www.kgs-genlibrary.com]

This article corrects, enlarges, and provides addition documentation for two generations of the history of the President’s maternal family in Labette County, Kansas. New family members, previously not known, are identified and connections to other Labette County families are noted.

Additionally, national news for 23 May 2011 reported with photographs on President Obama’s visit to one of his ancestral homes, Moneygall, Ireland. The news identified his immigrant ancestor as Falmouth Kearney who was born in Moneygall and immigrated to the United States in 1850. Online lineages of the President’s family state that Falmouth/Fulma Kearney probably died in Indiana. He did not! This article identifies the previously unknown burial site of the President’s great-great-great grandfather, Fulma Kearney, in Labette County.

Norman R. Peters

I am related to President Barack Obama and his mother was NOT named Shirley. Her name was Stanley Anne Dunham. She was born on Nov. 29, 1942, NOT Nov. 27th, as you had stated. Her parents were Madelyn and Stanley Armour Dunham. They called Barack Obama's mother Anne. My father was Robert Dean Dunham. My grandfather was Earl Trefry Dunham and my grandmother was Charlotte Grace Dunham, from Maine and Massachusetts. My 87 year old aunt in CT, Patricia June Dunham (Oburchay) did extensive research with the help of a family member from Indiana, who traced our family back to Obama's family, through the Dunham side. In addition, my father is a distant cousin of Alice Hathaway Lee, who was the first wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. They had one daughter, also named Alice. His first wife died of Bright's Disease, shortly after giving birth and baby Alice was raised by an aunt. (They are from Chestnut Hill, Masssachusetts.)

Yes, my brother did the Y-DNA & mitochondrial tests, & my husband, one daughter, and I have had the autosomal DNA test. Two of the major testing companies are FamilyTreeDNA & 23 & Me (referring to 23 pairs of human chromosomes).

"Do they really work?" is another question. If you refer to Y-DNA, the person to be tested has to be a male with the correct surname. There are family projects, and comparing others from the same family can prove whether your line is really from DUNHAM aka SINGLETARY.

Re: Abiel Dunham

According to Attleborough Vital records to End of Year 1849, Abiel Dunham first married Ruth Cobb, int. 13 Jun, 1761. She died and Abiel married Mehetable Knap, int. 20 May, 1772. She died 2 Dec., 1809. Capt. Abiel then married Mrs. Sarah Tate, (Miss. int.) 2 July, 1810.
I believe that Sarah Tate Dunham was my GGGG grandmother. Members of my family say that as a widow in her old age she lived with her son Hugh Tate in Landgrove, VT. Hugh's children referred to her as Grandma Dunham. Some relatives believe her maiden name was Sarah Swan and that Hugh's land was passed to him through Sarah's mother and brothers estates. Have found no land records on-line.
Hugh's son George Tate had the family prayer book on which was inscribed:
Thomas Tate, his book.
Melborough, year 1801
December forth, (sic)
December 20th
John Tate, writer, his book of prairs (sic)
February 20, 1800
James and Sarah Dunham
Sarah Tate, her book. Never let your mind be absent in (not finished), and Giv hur grace to look tharin. When the bell doth tole God in Heaven receive hur sole.
The 3 sons of Sarah and Thomas are then listed:
John Tate was born Augus (sic) 25th, 1781
George Tate was born February 9th, 1783
Hugh Tate was born February 24, 1786
John Tate died March 20th, 1813 (age 32)
George Tate died October 30th, 1785 (age 2)
Hugh Tate died June 17th, 1855 (age 69)

I am trying to learn about Sarah and, in turn learn about Thomas Tate. References to Melborough, the dates and names James and Sarah Dunham as noted on the prayer book remain a mystery.

Lon Dunham in Texas

Seeking information on Lon Dunham.
I recently obtained a copy of my unaltered birth certificate,
(I was adopted). I have known for a long time who my bio-mother was but just now was able to document who my bio-father was.
My un-altered b/c states that his name was Lon Dunham. At the time of my birth, ( Dec 1940 ) it says he was 40 years old and from Texas. That means he was born in 1900, but Texas didn't require b/certs. until 1903... big problem. He married my mother, (Virginia Marie Petty), about 1939...? and "left" her sometime about early 1942. There are a lot of Dunhams around the Denton, Texas area that I think are related, but can't seem to tie them all together. That is all I have to go on.
Anyone who might have ANY information please contact me as follows:

Charlie Petty
colcpetty1944@yahoo.com
931-797-9812
Thanking you in advance...

Charlie Petty

My husband's great-grandmother was Martha Elizabeth Humbert (sister of Anna Maria), who married James MacConnell. I have been trying to find her ancestors for years and have come up with Francis William Humbert as her father and Hannah Palmer as her mother. Francis is the son of Stephen Humbert and Martha Gerow who arrived in Nova Scotia from New Jersey. I can find nothing on Hannah Palmer and wonder if she may have been Micmac. There is a photos of Martha & James' grand-daughter (Martha Elizabeth Hamilton) that shows a very strong support of the story she was always told as a child.
I have also found 2 other Humbert sisters - Caroline and Sophia. I am always happy to share with others researching our lines. Hope this leads somewhere for all of us!!
Lisa DuFault

SINGLETARY

There are two major lines of the Dunham family in America. One descends from Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth Colony and the other is actually a Singletary family. Ancestry.com has Edward & family as descendants of Jonathan SINGLETARY (1639 - 1706, Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ).

Edward Marion DUNHAM (Sep. 1864, Logansport, Cass, IN - 12 Apr. 1942, Logansport, bu. Davis Cem.) m. 7 Oct. 1886, White Co., IN, Electra Arvilla SHULL (24 Jan. 1869, Burnettsville, White, IN - 18 Oct. 1941, Cass Co., IN).

The line as listed on Ancestry is
Edward M.
John Wesley DUNHAM (1832 - 1902) & Sarah E. BURN[E]S (1844 - 1932).
David DUNHAM (1762 - 1840) & Hannah BRUM[M]AGE (1783 - 1844)
Elisha DUNHAM (ca. 1730 - 1783) m. 20 Je. 1752, Woodbridge, NJ, Elizabeth FREEMAN
Joseph DUNHAM (1700 - 1771)
David DUNHAM (1673 - 1753).
Jonathan SINGLETARY alias DUNHAM.

Some descendants of David, b. 1673, went to Canada as Loyalists during the Revolution, per Kenneth Royal DUNHAM's Dunham-Singletary Genealogy, 1987.

If you Google names this way: "Elisha Dunham" +"Elizabeth Freeman," Google will provide information on most of the couples in the lineage.

I have not verified the above line. I descend from the Deacon John Dunham line through John, son of his first wife, and a third John. I also have a Freeman line with five Edmunds in five generations in a row, but they were from Pulborough, Sussex (later of Sandwich, MA), and online sources say your Elizabeth's line came from Cambridge and London.

You can find information on RootsWeb Family Trees / Advanced Search. If you have a living male relative with the surname Dunham, you could verify this with a Y-DNA test. There is also an autosomal DNA test that anyone can take to find relatives who have also taken the test .

Google FamilyTree DNA and 23andme for more information on the tests.

Helen Dunham

Helen Dunham died on Nov. 16, 2012 following surgery related to a heart attack four days earlier.

Settling in Yellow Springs, Ohio (Greene County) in 1986, she shortly began teaching piano in her home, which continued without interruption until her retirement this past summer.

Since graduating from college as a music major, she has nearly continuously followed a church music career, holding positions as an organist and/or choir director in Oregon; West Virginia; Lancaster, Ohio and two cities in Ontario.

Concurrent with her piano teaching in Yellow Springs, she had, for the past 24 years of her life, been the organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Springfield, Ohio.

Helen enjoyed many notable times in her music career, particularly in the two Canadian cities of Toronto and Sault Ste. Marie. But the Yellow Springs and Springfield experience, coming at the last quarter century of her life, were especially rewarding. In this period, she studied piano with Don Hageman, a Dayton professional pianist, whom she credited with improving her technique and making her a better teacher.

Something of a health aficionado, Helen adopted a vegan diet a few years after coming to Yellow Springs.
She enjoyed walks in Glen Helen and the Women’s Park, as well as the campuses of Antioch College and Wittenberg University.
Interested in keeping trim, she became a charter member of Yellow Springs Curves, a woman’s exercise club.

Her ashes and headstone will be placed in the Glen Forest Cemetery, just north of the village.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 at 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, located on Sunset Avenue in Springfield, OH.

Wow, You had a lot of information to share and it was all correct!! if you are not related...then how did you find all this so quickly? Just asking ; ) Because, I'm new at this and it has taken me a lot of diligent work to find what you shared so easily. LOL!

Yes, Electra IS the same as ELECTA!! I use Electra because that is what's written on her head stone and her Fathers (Jeptha Josiah Shull's) obituary.
She was married to Edward Marion Dunham. Together they had several children. one of those children was Clara Belle Dunham. Clara Belle was my Great Grandmother.

Thank you for all the information!! Are you certain that you belong to a different Dunham family in Indiana? And that We have no relatives in common?

Sincerely, Laura

I am also researching Moses Dunham & Sarah Leslie as they were my great, great, great grandparents. Their daughter Phoebe Ann married Jacob Tracy, 9 Nov. 1830 in Fayette, Pa. They (Jacob & Phoebe) are both buried in Apple Creek, Ohio. Moses and Sarah also had a son: Thomas.

Bradley Dunham b.1826 Vermont

I'm looking for Bradley Dunham, who says on census forms he was born in 1826 in VT. But there is no record of him in any Vermont database.
The only record I can find is from when he lived in Albany NY and married Elizabeth Woodworth. They had a son Charles (my g-g-grandfather). Much later he married someone named "Nettie" and they had a son named Bradley jr. in 1888.
I can't find anything about Bradley before 1850. I have a suspicion he was not born with the name Bradley Dunham. I'd appreciate ANY clues or information about Bradley Dunham of Albany. Thanks!

This linkage is beyond dubious and quite disturbing, and further erodes my confidence in the integrity of Ancestry.com!
