Thank you for posting this. I haven't figured out her connection, but there was only one pair of Dunheiffer males in early Cambridge, suspected brothers, and she must descend from one of them. one is the ancestor of my husband. that one is Jacob, the other is Christopher. probably Christof originally. they are proving difficult to trace back to earlier days.

Re: ORIGIN OF DUNIFER

although I'm fresh off the truck on this research-just found them today, I have had for years a census record of Jesse's sister Martha's that states her father was born in Bavaria. I hope it's accurate. I couldn't trace Jacob before 1840, so I'm thinking that it changed, again. or he could have arrived in the 1830's.
oh, and Martha's marriage record has her as a Dunifer, and I was sure she was Scots from that spelling, which of course threw me with the Bavarian birth place that I'd had for so long. so I can see where you thought it was Gaelic.
hope this helps someone. I can't believe how scarce the "original" spelling is online. 2 hits on Google...and I thought my maiden name was scarce!
hi, Cindy,
I sure hope you're still here, because I just traced John O. Duniver a few minutes ago through the census-because he is the nephew of my fiance's great grandmother, Martha Dunheiffer Moore.
get back to me asap. I don't know anything about Jacob's ancestry, but found a possible lead online.
ORIGIN OF DUNIFER

HI, I WAS JUST BROWSING ON THE NAME FINDER AND FOUND YOUR POSTED MESSAGE. I WAS A BIT SURPRISED TO SEE THAT THERE IS AN EVOLVED SPELLING OF DUNIFER. AS I SAID TO YOU ONCE IT APPEARS ON FACE VALUE TO BE OF POSSIBLE SCOTTISH OR IRISH ORIGIN. BUT AFTER SEEING HOW THE NAME HAS CHANGED OVER TIME FROM WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE ORIGINAL DUNHEIFER, THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING. THAT SPELLING APPEARS TO BE GERMAN IN ORIGIN OR ATLEAST "GERMANIC". MEANING THAT BEFORE THERE WAS A FORMALIZED COUNTRY OF GERMANY, GERMAN CULTURE IN FLUENCED ITS SURROUNDING NEIGHBORS.SUCH AS AUSTRIA,SWITZERLAND,HOLLAND,DENMARK. TRACKING IT DOWN MAY MEAN LOOKING AT EVERY BIRTH AND DEATH RECORD OF EVERY ONE OF HIS MALE LINEAGE TRACING TO THE POINT OF WHO IT WAS WHO FIRST ENTERED THE U.S.A. AND SEEING IF IT WAS CHANGED BY THE PEOPLE AT IMMIGRATION. START WITH HIS FATHER AND WORK BACKWARDS.
