I am looking for any family related to Lille May Dunkley b. 1890. She married William B Hodnett in Halifax on 12/26/1907. I only know her parents initials (W.L. & A.D.), not the full names or her mother's maiden name. William and Lillie had 2 children, William Macon and Annie Hodnett. Annie married Henry Elliot and William Macon married Mary Shelton.

Please do you or anyone else have ANY info no matter how small on this family? Did Annie and William marry in South Africa for example, as 2 of their children appear to have been born there? Regards, Elaine

My apologies to everyone who replied-haven't been "on" this site for a considerable period of time. Interested in all the entries regarding the "Dunkleys from Cannock, Staffs". Not sure if we have a connection or not. As far as we know my great-grandfather had little if any contact with anyone in England after 1910. Therefore I have no way of knowing if Robert was/is related or not.Certainly there was-is-a close geographical tie. I'll do a detailed "records" search next time I'm "over there". Should have done it before now, one of the times I was in the U.K.

Bill Dunkley

We are in Canada.

Martin-

Thanks for this-yes-Priscilla was my great-grandmother. She died in 1978 I think it is was. I vaguely remember an "Uncle George"-and an Uncle Emryss- I think it was. My great-grandfather, grandfather and father are named William as well. William the eldest and Priscilla were in Toronto for a brief time -then went to Windsor Ont. He started a couple of fish and chips stores, After he died my grandfather-William 2- sold the business to one of his Edwards uncles. Are you in the USA?

Thank you so much for sharing this information - it explains much about the Francis Baring Atkinson history. I was able to find both the marriage and birth register for Susan in Jamaican parish registers. My email is janecanada66@hotmail.com. If you'd like to send me yours I'll email copies of the church records.

I am also from the George Atkinson line. Their son, the Rev. William Atkinson-Clark was the Father of Rev. Thomas Atkinson my GGrandfather. My Grandfather was Richard (Dick) Atkinson who emmigrated to Canada in 1896. My Father, another George Atkinson was born in 1924 and passed in 2004.

Hello,

I'm researching the Atkinson family history and am curious about your line of descent. Who are you descended from? My gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfather was George Atkinson of Temple Sowerby (1730-81), whose second son George as you say married Susan Dunkley, an heiress of Clarendon, Jamaica. George was succeeded as Island Secretary of Jamaica by his younger brother Matthew, who was my gt-gt-gt-grandfather. (My grandparents were the last members of the family to live at Temple Sowerby.)

I know very little about George - much more about his siblings. I read in an old family letter that George had wanted to marry the daughter of an old friend of the family, Sir Francis Baring (founder of Baring Brothers), but she had refused him on the grounds that she didn't want to go to Jamaica, where the Atkinsons had plantations. On the boat out to Jamaica, so the story goes, he met Susan Dunkley, who was reputed to be a very amiable woman. When they came back to England they lived in Lee, Kent, in a house that belonged to Sir Francis. Baring helped the family in all sorts of ways, and George and Susan called one of their sons Francis Baring Atkinson in gratitude.

Hope this might be a little helpful/interesting...
I'm trying to trace information for Susanne's family (Dunkley) of Clarendon Jamaica. I believe she was born there and her Father's name may have been Thomas. She married George Atkinson, the Island Secretary of Jamaica, in 1794 in Clarendon. I have all the Atkinson information but have struck out on the McKenzie-Dunkley.

I am trying to find information to add to my family tree.
Susanne McKenzie-Dunkley married into our family (Atkinson) m.1794 in Clarendon, Jamaica. I am searching for information about her Mother and Father. Her husband, George Atkinson (1764 - 1818)was listed as Island Secretary of Jamaica as stated in Landed Gentry of Great Britian records when they were married. Susanne's parish record was in Clarendon.
Any information on her parents would be sincerely appreciated. Jane

I did have the Atkinson information - its the Dunkley family I was looking for. Her name in our family tree records is Susanne MacKenzie and Dunkley is the maiden last name. I'm kind of wondering if MacKenzie could be her Mother's maiden name. The only records I can find for Thomas Dunkley is the slave registery reports of Jamaica in the late 1700's. Thank you for your help.

I didn't find out more about Susanne, but did find more information about George. George was born September 17, 1764 in Temple Sowerby and died May 21, 1814. They were married on July 13, 1794. Susanne was born about 1766 and died about 1830. I found the book "A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Great ..., Volume 1 By Sir Bernard Burke" that you referred to, and George's father was also named George and he is the one who was born 1730, died 1781. What a fascinating family you have! The book list their ancestry and their 9 children.

I'm afraid I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but maybe the clarification on her husband's dates will help someone else.
Fascinating! I am a little confused though. Are you saying that Susanne and George married in 1794? But that he died in 1781? What more do we know about Susanne? Do you know when she was born, or where? Was MacKenzie her maiden name and she married a Dunkley or was MacKenzie her middle name and Dunkley maiden?

For nearly a decade I have hoped that a Dunkley from Jamaica would join familytreedna and to learn more about that branch of the family.

Phillis was apparently born in Silverstone, Northants about 1800, and Thomas LONGHURST was born in Ockley, Surrey, in 1794.

They moved to Ockley after their marriage where they raised a large family. I only recently learned of her last name and marriage location, and was hoping that someone with DUNCKLEY/DUNKLEY roots could provide more information about this line.

Regards, Bernard

Family of Minnie Dunkley

I am seeking any information about my Great-great-grandmother Minnie Dunkley's family (and I don't know if Minnie was her given name or a nickname). Most of what I know of her family is based on a letter my Great-grandmother, her daughter-in-law, wrote to my mother in 1993. This letter states the following about Minnie and her family:

-She died Nov 1937 at the age of 42
-She had a brother named Eugne and a sister
-She had two sons named Alexander & Ernest (my Great-grandfather, born 29 Aug 1916)
-Alexander had five children (three sons & two daughters) & only one son and his daughters were still living at the time the letter was written.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

You're right, Minnie would be my great-great grandmother (I've edited my earlier post). As for geographic information, I'm assuming she was born in the USA since her son Ernest (my great grandfather) was born in Clover, Virginia 29 Aug 1916.

Can you give any geographic information? Country, state, city? Is this in the States or in England?

Also, if her daughter-in-law is your great-grandmother, I think that makes Minnie your great-great-grandmother.

Great to hear someone else is investigating the Dunkleys. You should have a look at my web site http://www.historyandnews.co.uk
If you go into family tree and search for Edward Dunkley you will see everything I have on this line. I visit Northamptonshire Record office about twice a month and I am hoping to make some progress on tracing the Dunkleys further back than about 1756

Thank you for your response about the Dunkley family. Since I posted my inquiry, I was able to connect with a man from Kislingbury who told me that John Dunkley and Ann Claridge, parents of John, Samuel, and other Dunkleys, had moved from Brington to Kislingbury about 1754. I don't know much about
Samuel's wife Elizabeth Hipwell. My recent interest about this family has been Elizabeth's father William. Apparently he married twice, once to Elizabeth Langford and then to Elizabeth Tompkins. What do you know about Samuel and Elizabeth Hipwell and about Elizabeth's parents and family? Thanks for your help. I have found that Northamptonshire is a difficult place to research.

Regards, Rhea Tiffany

HEllo,
Could I get a copy of what actually happened at that fox hunt that resulted in the hanging of Booker Dunkley? Archelaus McHone, a brother to one of my ancestors, was the one who was murdered.
