I would love to share information with you about the DUNKUM family. One thing that I want to mention is that Thomas Jefferson did not bring DUNKUMs over from Europe to work for him. DUNKUMs were already here and had been here since the 1600s in Stafford County, VA. The brothers, William and John who did work for Jefferson were sons of John DUNKUM, Sr from Cumberland Co, VA. They were part of a large family who still have descendants who live in the area. I descend from a brother of John Jr and William. I descend from Benjamin DUNKUM. Please contact me at rubygem@aol.com. I would like very much to learn about your line and I am glad to share my many years of research.

Ruby Talley Smith

I have some history on the Dunkum Family that was written by my grandmother, Dorothy Dunkum Isaacson. Her father's grandfather was John Dunkum, brother to William.

In 1970 my grandmother wrote:

"William and John and another brother (not named) were brought to Charlottesville, VA from England to help Thomas Jefferson with building "Monticello". One was a stone-mason and one a carpenter. The three brothers built the only substantial homes between charlottesville and Scottsville on what is now Scottsville Road.

"William and John became prosperous farmers (William received $46.00 from Jefferson, according to Jefferson accounts.

"John Dunkum (father's grandfather) built his home "Woodland"on (now) Scottsville Road in the year 1807 a mile south of brother William's home, "Brookhill." (Seen in National Geographic Magazine, May 1950).

"John married Elizabeth Durrett, daughter of Marshall Durrett. Their children: James, Martha (married Chester Ballard), Elizabeth, Jane and Sarah (married Phillip Edge- had one daughter Emma).

"John, born in 1773 died in 1855.

"William Dunkum began his purchase of land in 1807 and continued until his plantation covered nearly 1,000 acres. He built "Brookhill" on Carter's Ridge Road (now Scottsville Road) (See National Geographic Magazine May, 1950) about 3 miles from town in 1810.

William married Frances Gentry. Their children were: Mary Ann, Frances, Eligah, William L., Elizabeth, Chesley, Martha (married a Barksdale), James T and Susan.

William died in 1846.

I have more information if you would like it.

Ruby thanks for all the great info on the Dunkums. I had them from Louisa so just assumed thar Mr. Sowell's was there too. I had gotten the info from someone researching the Durrett family from Caroline Co as Mary I. , Paulina's sister marr into that family. It is actually the Durrett family that I am researching but like to get as much info on collateral lines as I can. Don't have any info on the Dunkum's except what I posted. Will be glad to share the Durrett info if you want it.
Ollie

To continue with answers to your questions: Polly Ann's name was really Paulina Ann DUNKUM. Her husband was Louis A. SOWELL and as far as I know was never in Louisa Co, VA. He was born 29 Dec 1803 in Charlottesville, Albemarle Co, VA. He was a son of Benjamin SOWELL and Annie GENTRY. He had a brother named Pleasants SOWELL and one named Nimrod SOWELL. The children for Paulina "Polly" Ann DUNKUM & Louis A. SOWELL were William, Mary E., Benjamin Anderson and Benajah.

Joshua Ralls ABELL was born in 1821 in Albemarle Co, VA. To my knowledge he was never in Louisa Co, VA. He was a son of Rev John S. ABELL and Lydia RALLS. He had a brother named Alexander P. ABELL and one named Rev George W. ABELL. The children of Joshua Ralls ABELL and Susan Ann DUNKUM were Mary E., Fanny W., William W., Alice, John Edward, Julia A., Charles R. and Susan L.

I am anxious to hear from you so you can tell me what you know about the family.

Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com

To answer some more of your questions, You ask for the parents and siblings of William DUNKUM. His parents were John DUNKUM, Sr and Mary Phoebe BRADLEY. His siblings were: Benjamin (my direct ancestor), John Jr, David, Sarah, Nancy, Elizabeth, Jonas and Moses.

William's daughter was named Mary Jane DUNKUM and she was born 29 Aug 1810 in Albemarle Co, VA and she married William Hines DURETT in Albemarle Co, VA. To the best of my knowledge no one from this family was ever in Caroline Co, VA.

More later, Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com

This is incredibly timely. I am leaving tomorrow to go to VA to attend the DUNKUM annual family reunion.
The man you refer to is William DUNKUM b 23 Mar 1777 in Cumberland Co, VA. To the best of my knowledge he never lived in Louisa Co, VA. He married Phoebe ANDERSON on 16 Oct 1805 in Cumberland Co. They had the following children: John Anderson, Paulina Ann, Mary Jane, William Lewis, Chesley and Elijah. Phoebe died in 1823 and William remarried Frances GENTRY on 18 Dec 1823 in Albemarle Co, VA. Then William and Frances had the following children: James T., Benajah, Susan Ann, Frances Elizabeth and Martha Catherine. Frances GENTRY's parents were Benajah GENTRY and Annie JONES.

What is your connection to the family? Please contact me and we can share information.

Ruby Talley Smith rubygem@aol.com
