I didn't think to look outside the church (how silly) when I visited the Estate last year. It was interesting also seeing where two great uncles worked as well as James.

Best wishes
Christine

Do any of you know if this John Boyd dunlop and the families you are discussing had any of the family who were whip makers.

I'm so stuck with my Dunlop family. The family trdition is that they are cousins of John Boyd dunlop. I do have James Dunlop whip maker wife Susanna McNaght/McNaught living on Gaol Lane ( Jain Lane) coleraign They children were born starting about 1800. and christened at St Patricks Church. They are also buried there. One of their sons left and came to Indiana. He ran a mercantile store in Perrysville. My line is another son, also named James who married Margaret Morrison. He also was a whip maker. They lived on Shankhill road in Belfast. James, 3rd their son born in 1833 followed his uncle John Dunlop and came to Indiana then on to Urbana illlinois. He was in the mercantile business and later became an attorney.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I will share what I have. Just ask.

Thanks

Emalu Dunlop Hart

(notice his is spelled with an 'i') gives a pretty good sketch of what happens to various lines that crossed over from Scotland.

Send me an email to remind me of this question so I can type later today.
There is a website with pictures of the Kilcolmkeil Churchyard which quotes the stone that John Giffen and Janet Dunlop erected for their children. Does the Giffen book say how Andrew relates to John Giffen? Does John's line go back to 1625, or even further?

Just now I looked in the Giffen Blue Book (as family calls it) and sure enough, there is the documentation for John Giffen & his wife, Janet Dunlop [it says Janet], who had erected a stone in the Kiel Cemetery [maybe the Kilcolmkeil Churchyard, Southern Parish, Argyll?] in Kildavee in 1819. John was noted as a weaver (quite a few Giffens were weavers). The stone was erected by them in memory of two children they'd lost: John and Janet (just to confuse us, right?). There was more on the stone, but the researcher, Angus MacVicar, who wrote of his findings to Mr. James Breakenridge, a prominent citizen of Campbelltown, reports the stone was "very much sunk in the ground." He spaded away soil until he hit a coffin, then stopped. Nearby was another stone reading, "In memory of Andrew Giffen, who died 18th Jan., 1785, aged 71 years, and of Agnes Havie, his spouse, who died 28th Feb., 1787, aged 75 years."
Seriously? Jane Dunlop. I must've figured that out along the way in order to know about the Giffen connection to Dunlop cheese. But I thought it was a Giffen woman who had married a Dunlop, but I must be wrong. Will have to add this to my info. Thanks!

As for documentation back to 1625 in Ayrshire ...oh yes, there is LOTS of information. I now have a little tin of dirt from the land where they used to be. My husband had to tromp back into some weedy areas (at the direction of a great local person who knew all about the Giffen history) to find some ruins. I have some great pictures.

Do you want to email me at annystokes@verizon.net and I'll give more info?

You don't say so, but do you know that Robert Giffen's mother, he b. Kildavee 1743, was Jane Dunlop?Great cemetery in Kilcolmkeil Churchyard, Southend Parish, Argyll, has marker of two of their children (John giffen and Jane Dunlop). Can you tell me more about the documentation of Giffens back to 1625 in Ayrshire? Thanks!

Thanks for your reply not sure if the family I have found in Bushmills is the same one as you say it was a common name. I have found a John Dunlop who was a MP for the area at the right time but sure he must be from a different family and class I think. Problem is my father was only 6 when his dad was killed at Dunkirk so never really knew him at all. The history died with him. Just wanted to try to gather some history for him regarding his dad and his father. I know they were very poor in Bushmills and sure they were never registered anywhere. Once I find one person I am sure things will be so much easier even my dad is not found on any searches because Port Glasgow was so heavily bombed in the war.

Regards

Annette Dunlop

Hello again, Raquel, If you wrote in response to my suggestion in the last post, and have given your birthplace as Kansas, go to the top of this page, Click on Advanced Search. In the box for Author, type either kellyroad OR CadiListMom, time is Anytime, and Boards All Boards (top left corner) and this will take you to their postings. If you then click on the name of the post, it will show you the whole message. You can then read the messages from both researchers in turn and decide for yourself whether or not they would be able to help you. I think it is well worth a try if you tell them as much as you know. Good Luck. ThereseD73

Hello Raquel Marie Bretch/Rachel Leason, You don't say where you are writing from, but on the Message Boards in 2007, there were two researchers who were able to give some help in situations like your own. Their author/pen-names were "kellyroad" and "CadiListMom" who both appeared to be based in the USA and Canada and were able to find missing people for me. (The names I was researching were MARR and MASTERS). I thought if I passed on the names of these two researchers to you, they just might be able to help you if they are still researching.
Hope this helps. Best of luck. ThereseD73
P.S. Have you looked at the very early posts on THIS board? There is a Mike BRETCH making posts at about No 2 or 4 - somewhere right at the beginning and later on there was another one. ThereseD73

Yes, you are absolutely correct re Andrew's parents names - must have had a 'senior moment'! Hope all goes well in Scotland for you - I found it very interesting visiting Langholm and seeing where Great Gran lived with her family. I also found my Great great grandfather's house in Middlebie and I promptly loaded the photos onto my computer only to have it vandalised by a virus so I lost all my Scottish memories.

As you say, we are obviously related in some way which is great for me to know because I was adopted so know absolutely nothing about my family other than what I have found on Ancestry.

Take care
Christine

Did I ever reply to your query re the Lorrain Family? I apologise if I didn't - my great great grandmother was a Isabella Lorrain who married an Andrew Frater in Langholm, Dumfries-shire and my great grandmother was Agnes Lorrain, born in Langholm in 1840. To be honest, trying to think back to the early 1800's without looking at my files is difficult (the files are not to hand at present) but if you would like me to do so then I would be very pleased to help. Basically the families of Frater and Dunlop centre around Langholm, Annan and Middlebie in Dumfries-shire. Again I apologise if I forgot you!

Kind regards
Christine Dunlop

I'm looking for the parents of a William Dunlop, born about 1857 in Canada and both his parents were from Scotland according to the U.S. Census bureau reports of 1910. But I can not find the names of his parents anywhere. All I know is that his parents were from Scotland. Would that fall in about the right timeline?
