I was wondering if any body could help me fill a couple of holes with Joseph Perry Dunn's (1833 - ?) family.

I have the US Federal Census for Joseph Perry Dunn for 1870, 1880, 1900.

The 1870 Census shows 6 kids Martha (15), Susan (13), Mary (11), Roda (9), Levi (5) and Ann (2).

The 1880 Census shows 6 kids Martha (24), Mary (21), Roda (18), Levi (15), Anna (12) and William (9).

The 1900 Census shows 1 kid Rochelle (38) and 2 Grandkids Darkus (15) and Leola (12). Also according to the same Census Nancy (Joseph wife) had 7 childern and only 6 still living. I assue that Susan died somewhere between 1870 and 1880. Rochelle is listed as a daughter but never showed up till 1900 unless Roda and Rochelle are the same person. Also I can't figure who Darkus and Leola belong to. It shows that Rochelle has not had any children so they must belong to another of the children.

Does any one have more information on Susan, Rochelle, Darkus or Leola?

looking for parents of James S Dunn from MS

I found a record of James Samuel Dunn who married a Maud Choate in TN. DOB was October 1863. I believe this is the same James Samuel Dunn who married a Maud listed in the 1910, 1920 & 1930 census with children Ruby, Ollie, Allen, Lula, Leana, and James V. However, they have one child listed as James W., who was raised by grandparents, William Dunn and Louisa Henry.

The confusion is that two sons named James? I need to verify that this is the same person. The dates and places match up, as does the marriage date and the spelling of Maud without the "e", unusual.

Can anyone help me?
It would be great to hear from any other Dunns out there who think they might be descended from: Henry Dunn, a coal agent (1817/8 - 1886), born at St Ninians, Stirlingshire. I believe the family came from the Drymen area before that and were called Dun and even Din. I'm descended from his son, John Dunn, a tinsmith (1842-1910) who married Mary Manderson in 1864 in Glasgow. I look forward to hearing from anyone with similar connections. Steve.

Joseph Lemuel Dunn

Am looking for information on a Joseph Lemule Dunn who I believe married a Martha Elizabeth Hartsell on December 14, 1851 in La Porte, la Porte county, Indiana. The 1860 census for La Porte lists Martha as Martha Hartsel and head of household with two children: James Hartsel and Hartsel Hartsel who I believe are actually Dunn children. Martha married a Henry Euler in La Porte on August 10, 1860. A child, Joseph Euler with a birthday of December 13, 1860 in La Porte appears in their family later on but I believe Joseph may actually be the Hartsel Hartsel (Dunn?)listed on the 1860 census and the birth year incorrect as the Euler's have a second child born February 2, 1861 which would have been a physical impossibility. Interestingly, Joseph does not appear in the Euler household on the 1870 census although a James Lemule aged 14 does. Believe James Lemuel is the James Hartsel on the 1860. Joseph's name is also omitted in the list of children contained in the 1872/1873. Euler divorce records even though he was a minor child and definitely alive at that time. Joseph has always been recorded in the Euler genealogies but James never has been. Would really like to know more about Joseph Lemuel Dunn and the children he had by Martha Elizabeth Hartsell. Would be most grateful for any help given
Catherine

Mary Dunn, 1770

The parentage of Mary has been a brick wall for the last 10 years. Mary was born 13 Jun 1770 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. I have fond Mary's sister, Osee Dunn (abt 1774 - 10 Mar 1858 Allen County, KY) who married Walter Tiffany and another sister, (name unknown) who married Robert Calvert.

Mary married Peter Martin 28 Dec 1791 in Berkeley County, VA. This family moved to Botetourt, VA where my dirct ancestor, Nancy was born in 1803. There were several siblings born before and after Nancy all born in VA: John D. (b. abt 1793), Susan (b. bet. 1793-1800), Sarah (b. bet. 1793-1899), Enoch (12 Jul 1805-9 Mar 1860), James Davidson (17 Sep 1808-12 Apr 1883), and Joseph W. (b. 1818) whose 1st wife was Helen d/o Osee and Walter.

There is much confusion about the Peter Martins who married in Berkeley County, VA. One went to Ohio and one who also married a Mary (Washington) settled in Tennessee.

I have document my family back to Mary and Osee. From their death announcements I gleaned the names of parents. John and Mary Dunn.

I also beleive Mary to be a twin, as twins usually follow the female line with skip of one generation and twins (via Nancy)run in my line.

I have found reference to John Dunn in VA who served for NJ in the Revolutionary War and a Robert Dunn Land Grant in Berkeley County, VA, 1778.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have found copies of six wills of Dunns in Essex Co. Virginia dating from Feb 1731 through December 1785. They are all related and decended from Thomas Dunn (b 1606 England), who came to Virginia as a 14 year old indentured servant to Sir George Yeardly, govenor of Virginia, in 1620. The wills mention over 40 Dunns in Essex County, Virginia in the mid-1700s.

Seth Dunn MO son of James and Mary??

My Great-Grandfather was Seth Dunn and was married to Isabel(Isabelle, Leabree) He was born in Missouri in either 1874 or 1875. From research it appears his parents were James Dunn (born 1849 in Kentucky) and Mary Dunn (born in Missouri in 1850-51) and her mother was Mary Rogers (born 1808 in Virginia). I am not able to confirm James and Mary, nor can I find more on the family line. I am also stuck on Isabel. I think I may have found her family name was Lear, but I can not confirm this either. Does anyone have a suggestion or a lead? Thank you.

Patrick DUNN and Bridget CURRAN and family

Hi,

I have hit a brick wall in regards to info regarding my Great,Great Grandparents - Patrick and Bridget (Curran) Dunn. They had two children that I know of.

One is Patrick Dunn born about 1853 in Ireland. Some info I found on his death claims that the family was from Kildare County, Ireland. He died in 1923 in Washington state and is buried there in Yakima County.

The second son was James Dunn and he was my great grandfather. His birth year isn't as clear. The US censuses put the year around 1854, but his headstone says 1845. So sometime in between would be a good guess. James married Julia F. Duffy about 1875, probably in either New York or Ohio. James and Julia had 6 kids. One died at birth (I believe) and the others are :
1) Mary Ellen Dunn born in Ohio in 1877. her nickname was Mollie and she married John Hogan.
2) Patrick Francis Dunn born in Missouri in 1879. They called him Frank and he married Esther Driscoll.
3) Josephine Dunn born in Missouri in 1883. Josie died in 1902 and is buried in Washington state in Yakima County. She never was married.
4) Julia Margaret Dunn born in 1888 in Kansas. She married David Beattie and they are my grandparents. Lived in Granger, WA and then Seattle, WA.
5) James Bartholomew was born in Washington in 1894. He married Shirley and his nickname was Harry. Lived in Topponish, WA.

I am trying to find any info on Patrick and Bridget (Curren) Dunn and any other kids they may have had. They may have immigrated to the US around 1860 (?).

If any of this sounds familiar please send me an e mail!!

Thanks, Anne

Samuel Fowler Dunn (1750-1802) so James Dunn & Martha Long

Samuel was the first son of James & Martha. Naming tradition of the time was to name the first son after father's father. The only guess I seen offerred was that John was the first name of both James and Martha's fathers. The often used maiden name of mother as a middle name doesn't fit either.
My third point is why was not Samuel used by any of Samuel's siblings first name of their first born male sons? Nathaniel did name a son Samuel but it was his youngest son.

Anyone have any input or thoughts on this problem that has been nagging me for a long time?

So I am taking a couple days to go and do a bit of research.
My father- James Ray Dunn was the son of Virgil Dunn, son of Robert Washington Dunn, son of Minor Frances Dunn, son of David Dunn. I am going to get documents to prove this is correct. If you have any information of this line, please let me know.
If you want any information about this area, just let me know by sending an email to me at ravenswing2001@yahoo.com
I also have information on the Vicksburg National Park and the Dunn's buried there. I am going to take pictures of the stones. If anyone is interested in these, please let me know at the above email address.

I have connected my 2nd great Mary Dunn Connors to 3 brothers John, James E. amd Michael. They are the children of Kate McGrath and John Dunn. They immigrated bet. 1861-1870. I did a nat. on James county was Waterford. I then had research done at the Waterford Heritage Centre. They did not find any records in the RC diocese of Waterford-Lismore for this family. I did griffiths for Kilculliheen and Kilworth 2 towns that were in Waterford at one time (now in different diocese). I found a few McGraths some Connors but alas no Dunn's. Any suggestions would be welcome. I really don't know where to look next. Thank you,Helen

Will Dunn, prisoner tries to escape at Chickasha, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 3 November 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma.

ATTEMPTED ESCAPE

Prisoners at Chickasha Failed in an Effort to Secure Liberty

Chickasha: The prisoners in the United States jail here made an attempt to escape and Tom Boswell, under sentence of horse stealing was fatally shot.

There were about fifteen prisoners in the jail, and Deputy Marshal Madsen was soon to start for Fort Leavenworth with them. Three guards, Dave Hopkins, Luther Smith and J. P. Ellis, were on duty.

Frank Goins, a prisoner, asked permission of Hopkins to go for a bucket of water and as he passed the guard turned and pinioned him from behind. At the same time Will Dunn, another prisoner, who was in the corridor, had secured permission from Smith to do some sweeping. With the broom he attached Smith, and at the same moment Boswell escaped through the door and was about to attack Ellis. The plan evidently was to seize the guards, secure their arms and permit all the prisoners to escape.

When Boswell was within five feet of Ellis, the latter fired. The bullet penetrated the skull of Boswell. Ellis fired a second time at one of the other prisoners, but the shot took effect in Boswell’s ear. Meanwhile Hopkins had struggled with Goins and shot him at him. Goins was not hit. The prisoners all went back to their cells. There is no hope for the recovery of Boswell.

Goins is under a sentence of a year for cattle stealing and Dunn is to serve three years for embezzlement.
Eugene Michael Dunn, born 1898 in Illinois - assistance needed, please
My grandfather, Eugene Michael Dunn, was born in July, 1898. He and his wife Hazel Loretta (Nolan) Dunn had two children, William Edward (Bill) Dunn and Rita Jane (Dunn) Erickson Tumbiolo.

My mother, Fleeta Claire Jones Dunn, reported that Eugene abandoned his family after Bill was born, came back ten years later, stayed long enough for Hazel to get pregnant with Rita, then left again. As far as I’m aware, none of my generation ever met him, or has even seen a photo of him.

Hazel and Eugene’s June, 1917, application for a marriage license says he was a bookkeeper and that his parents were William Edward Dunn and Josephine Lauer (Dunn), both from Steger, Illinois. Both were listed on the application as being dead at that time.

Lake County, Indiana, marriage records, where they were married, lists his name as Eugeno, obviously a typo, and shows their marriage date as June 20, 1917.

The 1900 Census shows that Eugene was born in July, 1898, and was living in Chicago, Illinois, USA, with his father, William Edward Dunn and mother Josephine [Lauer] Dunn. Five older siblings also lived there as well. The other children were Ella (b. Sep, 1884), Stephen (b. Dec, 1892), John (b. Jun, 1894), Rosa (b. Sep, 1895), and Julia (b. Sep, 1896).

The 1920 census shows that Eugene was a "clerk - die casting", which makes me think he must have been employed in a clerical job with some sort of factory by that time.

On the marriage license application Eugene's date of birth is shown as June 8, 1896, which is inconsistent with the info shown in the 1900 census. However, it must be wrong, for it's not possible that his mother had him in June, per the marriage license application, and Julia in September, as shown on the census. I'm not sure how old he would have to have been in 1917 to get married in Crown Point, Indiana (where they applied) without parental consent. However, if he was really born in July, 1898, he would have been 19 at the time of his marriage application, and it occurs to me that he may have lied about his age at that time.

His September 12, 1918, World War I draft registration card shows his date of birth as July 8, 1898, and that's the one I think is correct. The draft registration also shows that on he was living in Steger, Will County, Illinois, was a clerk, and his nearest relative was Hazel Dunn.

So what became of Eugene Michael Dunn? Can anyone help?

-Patrick Dunn

William Edward Dunn, b. Illinois 1861 - assistance needed, please

William Edward Dunn, my great grandfather, was born in Illinois in November, 1861. The 1880 census shows a William Dunn who was age 19, which matches his age, listed as a farm worker in Algonquin, Illinois in McHenry County. Algonquin is about 42 miles from Chicago, Ilinois, USA, where he shows up in 1900, so it could be him. However, this census recorded his parents as being born in England, which causes doubt (see below).

I couldn't find him in the 1890 census, but the 1900 census says that by June, 1900, he was age 38 and living in Chicago, Ilinois, USA. Living with him were his wife, Josephine Lauer Dunn, age 29, and their six children, with my grandfather, Eugene Michael Dunn being the youngest at age one.

The other children were:
Ella (b. Sep, 1884);
Stephen (b. Dec, 1892);
John (b. Jun, 1894);
Rosa (b. Sep, 1895), and;
Julia (b. Sep, 1896).

The census also says he was working for a railroad, and it looks like his job was either as a fireman or foreman.

The 1900 census records both Wiliam and Josephine’s parents' places of birth as Illinois. That's inconsistent with the 1880 info above, so the 1880 William is probably not our family’s William.

In any event, my grandparents, Eugene and Hazel Nolan Dunn, obviously named their son, my father, William Edward Dunn, after Eugene's father.

I have lots of information about the descendants of Eugene and Hazel, but need assistance with our ancestral line. Can anyone help?

- Patrick Dunn
Sheneman, Dunn/Wells family

Looking for the children of Marie Sheneman and Monnie Ray Dunn of Blackey KY. Names: Glenn, Dick, Ron, Tony, Nicky (Wells), Micky (Wells) and Joe (Wells). These children are still living, and are my uncles.

Father of Monnie Ray is A.C. (Abner Clayton) Dunn, b. 21 Oct 1875 d. 28 July 1833 of Jackson KY. Can't find his parents anywhere, but believe it to be William and Polly. Will's parents are reputed to be John Dunn and Margaret Taulbee, but I can't find a direct line. These names came from a Dunn family bible. Help!!
