Jane Annis Dunnavant born 1768 Virginia

Am seeking info on Jane Annis Dunnavant born 1768-1770 in Virginia, maybe Chesterfield Co. She first married John Ligon in 1789. Trees on Ancestry list her as the mother of James Ligon born 1775 when she would have only been 5 to 7 years old. James seems to have changed the spelling of his name to Leagon. Perhaps he regarded Jane as his mother when she would have been his stepmother. Some claim she married a William Dunn after John Ligon's death. In 1800 she married Reuben Jackson in Mecklenburg Co. Virginia. Trees on Ancestry say her father was a Thomas Dunnavant (various spellings) born 1746, died 1778 in Amelia Co. Virginia. The story I was told was that her father died young, her mother remarried to a very mean man, & she may have taken his name. There was some talk that Annis might have been her maiden name, but have no real info. Jane is my ancestor with her husband Reuben Jackson. According to their son Thomas Jackson's bio in the Neosho Co. Kansas county history the family moved to Indiana, but Reuben later returned to North Carolina where he died at 105. There is no evidence that can be found to support his living to that age.

My great-great grandfather is Leroy William Dunnavant. My great uncle remembers some of the names you mentioned. Leroy was a resident of Gladys in Campbell County. He was a private in the 11th VA Infantry during the Civil War. He was in Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and wounded in the leg. You should pick up the 11th VA Infantry book & get Leroy's military records. It's pretty cool stuff. He couldn't read or write, so he makes his mark (x) when he signed for things.

The 1860 Census for Coffee Co, Al, shows Samuel A. Dunnavant with father, James Hodges Dunnavant and mother, Mary B. (Hunley/Hundley). Census indicates Samuel's BD about 1824. 1860 Census for Coffee Co., AL Precinct #11 shows George L. 'Donovan' Dunnavant with father Samuel A. Donavon and mother Mary Donavon. Hope this helps.

I am looking for documentation (wills, deeds etc) that shows Francis W. Dunnavant and Lydia Flournoy to be the parents of James Hodges Dunnavant. Any information of a source and location would be appreciated. Francis W. Dunnavant and Lydia Flournoy were both born and died in Chesterfield Co., VA. They were married there 22 Sept 1792. Lydia is listed in father's will but there is no mention of children only that she married .....Dunnavant.

Norma

Dear Mr. Pollock,
I have found the information that you gave in your answer to my posted message at the Chesterfield County historical society. I found the marriage record of Daniel Archer Dunnavant and Courtney Ann Gwaltney. Their son (my great grandfather) was John Archer Dunnavant and he was born in Petersburg in 1854. He married Anna Washington Heath of Powhatan County, Virginia on July 6, 1876 in Mancherter City, Chesterfield County. Daniel "Archer" was in the 1860 census but not in the 1870 census. He was a confederate soldier and suffered a very serious wound and I do not believe that he survived beyond 1870. He did survive the war, however, according to the Virginia Regimental History book on his unit. I have found his family in the 1870 census, however the name was badly misspelled. Courtney was living in Manchester in 1870 with her four children and some boarders. Thank you for your reply and your help.

As you identify the wife of John Archer Dunnavant "Senior" as Courtney Ann Gwaltney, I believe the individual you are seeking was actually Daniel Archer Dunnavant and his wife was Courtney A. Gwothmey(sic) who married in Chesterfield County in 1848.

The only place thus far where I have seen him identified as Daniel was in his marriage bond, which identified his father as William. In the 1850 and 1860 census he was identified as Archer. I've not been able to find him in the 1870 or 1880 census, but he appeared in the 1900 census of Petersburg with his son John W. He died in Chesterfield County(?) in June 1906.

John was born in May, 1874 and his marriage license identified him mother's given name as Sarah, so it would appear Courtney died no later than 1873.

Perhaps you have some further information that I might be able to use to find Archer in either the 1870 or 1880 census, if not both, and resolve some of the other contradictions. I do have some further information which I would be happy to share with you, as well as share any information I am able to uncover as a result of leads you provide.

I am not at my own computer, and thus may not only not see any response to this message board from my personal computer as quickly as might be ideal, but also cannot configure this posting so that I can be notified of any response automatically, if you would wish to contact me directly please do so by posting to mep36@georgetown.edu
A further address is available at the Association of Professional Genealogists website.

Michael E.

Doris,

I have copies of the 1802-1819 Mecklenburg County Tax Lists. I got them from microfilm obtained through inter-library loan from the Library of Virginia. I have looked at both the personal property tax lists and the land tax lists. They only prove the relationship of Joel with his sons, John and Thomas. But they do not prove a relationship with Peter, who is my anscestor, or any other son. These lists do include the other sons as taxpayers, but no proof of relationship.

I am searching for the proof also, if I find it I will post it here. Please do the same for me if you find the proof we seek.

Mike Dunavant

Wilson Dunnavant was born 1803 in Va and the first I see him is in Grainger County.Tn when he married Mary Waddle whose parents are George and Annis Waddle, in 1823. He moves to Pulaski County,Ky then on to Cooper County,MO. He and his son Albert leave after the 1850 census and land in Fiddletown ,Ca. Wilson died after the 1860 census and Albert died in 1900. I think they went for the gold and ended up being poor.
I am looking for Wilson's family. I haven't had any luck in finding his parents or siblings. How did he get to TN and where were his family. I hope to break doen this wall eventually.
