Sergeant PATRICK DUNNE (born in Ireland c 1843) married CATHERINE MARY REARDON (born in Ireland c 1850) in Dover 28th November 1868.

Their fathers were WILLIAM DUNNE a farm labourer and TIMOTHY REARDON (deceased) a general labourer respectively.

Patrick was in the Royal Artillery. He and his family were quartered in Dover Castle for the census of 1871.

A Sgt Patrick DUNNE (born Aug 1848) of 1st battalion 19th North Yorkshire Regiment (which was soon after renamed the Green Howards) died in March 1880 in Bermuda where that battalion was garrisoned.

Catherine was a widow with three children in Dover town by the time of the census of 1881.

The youngest child of Patrick and Catherine was William (perhaps my grandfather), reported in the 1881 census as being born in “British Malta” 1873 or 1874. That birth was not recorded by either the British or the Maltese authorities. WILLIAM DUNNE of the same age was a Gunner RFA in Colchester for the 1901 census. My grandfather Sergeant WILLIAM ALEXANDER DUNNE of 1st (Royal) Dragoons was reported as being born May 1874 when he died in Cawnpore India August 1911 three weeks before the birth of my mother.
