"On December 6, 2005. FREDERICK JULES DUNNER was born April 29, 1945 in Livermore, CA, the son of the late Edward and Reichel (Connor) DUNNER. Fred graduated from Wheaton High School, Silver Spring, MD and The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. (BS, 1967). He attended University de Lausanne Ecote De Medicine (Switzerland) from 1967 to 1971 and then The George Washington University from 1971 to 1973 where he earned his M.D. degree. Fred completed his strait medicine internship at Western Pennsylvania Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA) 1973 to 1974, and a residency in Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1974 to 1977. He then joined faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals Clinics and achieved the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor and Staff Psychiatrist at the Veterans' Affairs Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa. He was certified in Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1980 and was elected a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 1989. He was President elect, President and Past President of the Iowa Psychiatric Society 1990 to 1996 and chaired the Education Committee of the society several times. Fred authored or co-authored 24 papers in scientific journals. He was active as a clinician in the Iowa City VA and as a teacher in the University of Iowa health care system until his retirement a few years ago.
Fred enjoyed his many friends throughout the country, playing golf and poker, and traveling. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Cubs, and the Washington Redskins.
Fred died peacefully, December 6, in West Branch, Iowa, of complications from surgery. His almost-year-long struggle was evidence of his determination and strength, and was greatly assisted by the excellent medical care he received in Iowa.
Fred is survived by his brother, David L. Dunner, M.D. and sister-in-law, Peggy Dunner; niece Laura DUNNER Jantos, her husband James, and their son Max (Fred doted on Max), all of Mercer Island, WA; his nephew, Jonathan M. Dunner, Los Angeles, CA; two aunts and several cousins. 'Uncle Fred' will be missed by his many close friends in Iowa City, IA, Pittsburgh, PA and the metroplitan DC area.
Funeral services will be held on December 9, 2005 at Rosenberg Funeral Chapel, Wilkes-Barre, PA, followed by interment in the Jewish Cemetery, West Pittston, PA. The family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Feed the Homeless Fund of Temple Israel, Wilkes-Barre, PA, the library fund of Temple Emmanuel in Kensington, MD, or the American Heart Association. There will also be a memorial service for Fred in Iowa City, March 4, 2005."
