Genealogical Notes on the Dunning Family in America by Milo Benjamin Dunning is a good starting point when searching the descendants of Theophilus Dunning, and it is just that a starting point. There are a number of errors in this publication.

I have a copy of the original publication, bought it through Ebay.

My wife is a descendant of Abijah Dunning (2nd great grandson of Theophilus) and his wife Elizabeth Gregory (his 2nd wife) who came to Canada from the USA circa 1790 with their 5 children, Zalmon, Abijah, William, Ithamar Gregory and Chloe. I have lots of information on the Canadian branch of the family if any one is interested.

Dunning Manuscript

I saw there's a manuscript by Charles N. Sinnett about the Dunning Family. He mentioned it in his "Campbells of Maine" manuscript. It was written about a century ago and the focus is ME, perhaps other New England areas.

I Googled it and can't find it on the Web. Does anyone have a copy, or know of a library that has one? It's probably not more than 20 pages or so if the Campbell manuscript is anything to go on.

Thanks,

Cheri

Early Dunning Family

Hi David,

After reading your post on the Dunning board, I wonder if you might be able to help some of the Dunnings living in America, by taking us back to the original English homesite?

We are especially interested in the ancestors of John Dunning who is said to be a "weaver from England." Research gives no clue as to where he was born in England.

Estimation is that he was born around 1690. He is in Chowan County, North Carolina ca 1717. He is an adult, witnessing documents, etc. Later he made his home in adjoining Bertie County, NC. His wife's name was Rebecca. We know not whether they married in England or the U.S. He died in Bertie County ca 1756. He named his sons, John, Samuel and Jesse.

There was a Samuel Dunning, born ca 1690 from England who migrated with his family to Kent Co, Delaware. Family members of Kent County are an exact DNA match to the Bertie County, Dunnings. Samuel is said to have left a brother, John, in England.

Samuel's family was party to a settlement of estate of Martha Dunning of Pennsylvania that involved a John Dunning in Westbeck, Saint Peters, Isle of Ely, County of Cambridge. John Dunning was appointed executor, 1743.

If you could tell us anything about the 1600 background of Dunnings in Cambridge we would be very appreciative.

Joyce Dunning,
Ft. Worth, Texas
bandj@flash.net

Hi David

I was intrigued to see your census reference, that in "1861 - Amos (Dunnings)... is living with his daughters... in Smith's Cottages, Kensal Town" That would make him my g'g'grandfather's neighbour, as he (George BROWNESS, labourer, recorded by the enumerator as BROWNES) his wife Mary Ann (née FOSTER) and children were also living on/in Smith's Cottages at that same time. However, I have never been able definitively to place "Smith's Cottages" on the map. I suspect they lay on Kensal Road near the top of Middle or West Row, but I'm by no means sure. Have you ever come across that information?

Robert Dunning, as is already known, was one of our own original research projects, and details were known for several years now.
Besides the details shown on the Internet, we also have several other pieces of data that are properly documented as facts, and will only be revealed to those who have a genuine love of such research, and not glory seeking.
And I also wish to confirm one important point - at no time, despite the assumption of some, have we ever given up such research or have we "forgotten" these veterans.
We believe in the total verification and authentication of any data, before going on to the final step of applying for any grave markers. We do know that some of these veterans had drowned, and their remains never recovered, thus ensuring that there will be no markers for these unfortunate persons.

I have a 2nd granduncle--Charles Burgess DUNNING (b. 1839, d. 1923)--who moved from Chenango County, NY (home to most of our Dunning family)to Walla Walla, WA in 1879 and then to Spokane, WA in 1880, where he was an active member of the community and served as a Municipal Judge and Justice of the Peace. He married Josephine HILLER in 1868 in Chenango County, and they had 4 children: William Hiller (1869-1887), Anna A. (1871-1941), Joseph Warren, DDS (1872-1943), and Mary Elsbree (1875-after 1945). All 4 children were born in Chenango County, NY and died in Spokane, WA. My best guess is that Myrtle is descended from Joseph. I'd be happy to give the photo a good home if there are no others interested in it.

At Grace Lutheran he gladly took on many duties and responsibilities, and as church organist he played enthusiastically for 46 years. He was active in the community and was a lifetime member of the Kiwanis. He was a social person with many hobbies and interests making for a non-stop, all-out life. He was a fisherman, hunter, boater, camper, artist/painter, wood worker, builder, farmer, gardener and musician.

Arlo follows his father, mother and older brother Rodney Dunning into eternal glory and is survived by Maria, his beloved and loving wife of 59 years; son Ed and wife Melissa, who have two children Madelyn and Egan; son Dean and wife Debbie, and children Allyson, Laura, Samuel and Keenan; and also his sister-in-law Verona Dunning, all who one great day will be reunited with him through our Lord.

Arlo loved the Lord, his family, and many friends. Until we see him again he will be greatly missed.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at Grace Lutheran Church in Moses Lake with Rev. Jeffry Berndt officiating. Arrangements are in care of Kayser’s Chapel & Crematory, Moses Lake.
I am trying to compile a complete list of all the descendants of Confederate American Civil War veteran Robert Dunning who served on the CSS Shenandoah, who are now living in Australia and New Zealand. If anyone could provide me with the names, city and state in which any of these descendants live it would be greatly appreciated. Please include information as to how you know they are descendants. jamesmgray@bigpond.com

Hello Mr. Green! Your question was a long time ago. Have you received an answer in the meantime? If not, perhaps I can help you. My great-grandfather was James Monroe Dunning, who fought for the Union, while his father John A. Dunning fought for the Confederacy. James Monroe Dunning indeed married Emily Jane Cochran, who brought some interesting genealogy into the mix. My father grew up with Cochrans in Western Tennessee, and regarded them as his cousins.

Sincerely, JW Dunning

Good morning, Heather!

WELL, I cannot contribute direct information, however I can provide some stones for you to turn.

I mentioned James Monroe DUNNING. His father, John A. DUNNING, was born in 1820 in Kentucky, and migrated south into NW Tennessee. John A. DUNNING is listed in the 1850 Western Tennessee census (Weakley County, as I recall). Father and son served on opposing sides during the Civil War.

Both of these individuals are attested in ancestry.com! I would investigate any siblings of John A. DUNNING, who may also have been born in Kentucky, and their descendants. Perhaps other DUNNINGs besides John's father (George?) migrated from NC into Kentucky.

Joyce DUNNING has shown interest in re-issuing her book and would include this hitherto neglected branch of the family. John A. DUNNING may derive from old Jeremiah DUNNING of Bertie County, NC, from John I DUNNING, born ca. 1685 (in England?).

I know the Tennessee DUNNINGs regard the Kentucky branch as their distant cousins. Best of luck!

Sincerely,
James DUNNING

Angie,

I believe Ellen Ashford married the elder Paris Chipman Dunning. She was his second wife and they had a son named Smith Dunning. I'm not sure abouth the associations after that. I am curious about the reference's to Albert and John being from England. If they were from England, their relation to Paris Dunning would be in question, as the elder Paris descended from Samuel Dunning , born in England circa 1690. He settled in Delaware. One of his son's, Thomas, married Mary Chipman Shields. It was her second marriage. After Thomas died she moved to Guilford Co, North Carolina with her children. Among them was James Dunning who married Rachel North. The elder Paris Chipman Dunning, future Governor of Indiana, was one of their children.

It would be interesting if Albert and John were indeed distant cousins as it may help us find out more about where this Dunning family came from in England.

I am part of the Dunning Family DNA project. We have proven that my Samuel, a John Dunning who immigrated to Bertie County, North Carolina in the 1700's and another Albert Dunning who immigrated first to Philadelphia and then to New Jersey in the late 1800's are all related.

You can contact me at ddunning@bbd.org. In addition to the work I have done, the credit should go to tje work of Dorie Heckman, Marty Grundy, Karen Kaye and Joyce Dunning.
That's funny. I've just begun working on the Dunning family and have come across a Daniel Dunning in Gibson County, Indiana that married an Anna ? and had one step-son Joeseph Dunning (born 1899/1900) and then Joeseph Dunning married and Edith and had Joeseph Dunning (different middle names). I am having trouble finding out information on Daniel Dunning or who Anna's first husband was.

The photo was taken in Spokane, Washington and the folder says by Chas A Libby.

I am not aware this young woman has any relation to my family but would certainly not want to discard the photo. Is there someone related to a Myrtle Dunning who might have been in Lincoln County, or Spokane Washington in the early part of the 20th century and would like this photo?

Thank you
Valerie

Has anyone come across a George Dunning born around 1833. He is my gg grandfather who immigrated to Australia in 1855. His marriage cert says he was born in London to parents Henry Dunning (a carpenter) and Hannah Roberts, yet I can find no corresponding records for these people. I have found a George Dunning born in 1835 in Rochester, Kent to a Henry Dunning (Chairmaker) but the mother is listed as Mary Ann Taylor. Does this sound like a match? Help!!

Dina

I doubt that the spelling is ADAMEZAK, most likely ADAMCZAK.
Distribution of ADAMCZAK in Poland:
http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/adamczak.html
From where were the ADAMEZAK(Adamczak)?
Spelling is very important. ADAMCZAK and ADAMCZYK 2 different family names.
These ADAMEZAKs in EI site but the name is ADAMCZAK.
Adamezak, Anna Hamburg 20 1877 1897
Adamezak, Josef Raytarovka, Russia 34 1875 1909
Adamezak, Marzin Tosianow 33 1868 1901
Adamezak, Tomasz Ruszera, Russia 20 1890 1910
Sorry that i did not get back to you sooner.

I am sure we are cousins but do no know how just yet.

I do not have any information for a Peter and Pauline. I have two Peter ADAMEZAK, on the Ship Bohemia, and arriving 18 April 1884. From Prussia.

I am trying to get further while I am overseas but finding it hard to read the Latin/German text on the films from the Family history Center. And, unlike some who say the surname is underlined, I have not had that experience with all 8 films I borrowed.

Talk with you soon!
Dina
