I have read through all the messages under the Dunscombe Family Origins heading. My great grandmother was Mary Ann Dunscombe, born around 1820, and married in 1840 to George Parrish in Bromley, Kent. Her father's name on the marriage certificate is Samuel Dunscombe, but no occupation is mentioned. I have so far failed to find more about Samuel, except for a death of a Samuel in 1852 in Shoreditch, London. Another Samuel who fits the bill could be the Samuel married to Eleanor in Dalwood, Devon, on the 1851 and 1861 censuses. There is also another clue: a marriage on the same page as Mary Ann's, names Elizabeth Dunscombe and Charles Miller (I have sent up for this cert.) and these two are the witnesses at Mary Ann and George's marriage. Can anyone help me here please?

My husband is a descendant of Daniel Dunscomb who "came from Bermuda in the early years of the province", i.e., New York. I have researched the family for a number of years and would love to know more about the Donkey Sanctuary in Devon. There is a plantation called Dunscomb in the central part of the island of Barbadoes. The Bermuda Dunscombs descend from Thomas Dunscomb of London who married Hannah Jadwyn. Her father, Thomas Jadwyn, was a member of the Bermuda Company and his shares were bequeathed to Thomas and Hannah in his will probated in 1626 with the stipulation that they occupy the land. I believe that the Duncomb/Duncombe family are basically from Warwickshire and the Dunscomb/Dunscombe family are from Devon. Perhaps very early on they were connected. In the "Domesday Geography of South-West England" edited by H.C.Darby & R. Welldon Finn, Cambridge 1967, pg. 420, in a comparison of Exeter and Exchequer Versions, they list under "Values" Dunscombe (340, 114b) valet 20s. et q.r. tantundem Olin et modo values 30s. I'm not familiar with the Domesday census I don't really know what this means. Would appreciate any info on this. Also would enjoy sharing research with anyone interested in the Dunscomb line.

Jennifer,
Just came across this inquiry. There was a John Dunscomb, son of Daniel and Helena (Swann) Dunscomb born 1709 New York
who was a wine merchant. He placed ads in local newspaper advertising wine, arrack, rum, etc. from his home on Smith St. He was a cooper as well. He died in 1783 and left a will mentioning Elsie, wife of his son John; Daniel, son of his son John; and Daniel's two sisters (unnamed); daughter Elinor; son-in-law Israel Mun/ds husband of daughter Hannah (deceased); and son Dennis. John, wine merchant, is my husband's ancestor. Are you related?

I have just read this post, I am very new to this and am researching my husband's family. My mother-in-law's family are descended from Dunscombe's so far I have only managed to trace them back to the 1841 census in Dalwood Devon. Samuel Dunscombe married to Eleanor were my husband's great, great, great, grandparents. Would love to know if you have had any success in your search and whether you are related to the Samuel Dunscombe's from Dalwood

SUSANNAH DUNSCOMBE (c1676-1769) - wife of Jonathan Ogden

Seeking the parents of Susannah Dunscombe, who was born c1676, probably in Bermuda, married Jonathan Ogden c1699 in New York, and died there in 1769. She could not have been a daughter of Daniel Dunscombe and Helena Swan, as sometimes alleged, because that couple married in NYC in 1696 and were of the same generation. She was probably a descendent of Thomas Dunscombe and Hannah Jadwyn, the first Dunscombe settlers in Bermuda from England, who inhabited property left to Hannah by her father, Thomas Jadwyn. She may have been a daughter of that couple's son, Samuel, by his first wife, Elizabeth Burgess, or by Abigail (lnu), his second; but Samuel's 1706 will made no mention of a Susannah. The only Susannah Dunscombe known to have been born in Bermuda in the late 17th century was a daughter of Thomas' grandson, Edward Dunscombe; but Edward's 1733 will indicated this daughter was then living unmarried and childless in Bermuda.

Susannah is probably identical with the Susanna Duncomb (sic) who immigrated to Virginia in 1694, perhaps to join Jadwyn cousins there, moving later to New York. Soon after Jonathan's death there c1746, Susannah married Thomas Sutton.

According to twice-widowed Susannah (Dunscombe Ogden) Sutton's 1765 will (proved in 1769), her six children were:

1. John Ogden (c1699-bef. 1765), who married Sarah Theale
2. Jonathan Ogden (c1700-1753), who married Wilmot
3. Susannah Ogden (c1702-1777), who married Samuel Wilson
4. Michael Ogden (c1703-1790), who married Jane Bloomer
5. Rachel Ogden (c1705-1770), who married Thomas Purdy
6. William Ogden (c1706-1783), who married Martha

Yes there is a Dunscombe Manor next to the National Donkey sanctuary and nearby are Dunscombe Cliffs, close to Sidmouth. There is also a tiny hamlet called Dunscomber near to Credition in Devon. There is no island called Dunscombe in the Caribbean but there was a settlement in Bermuda of migrants from England of that name. Note that Bames are often misspelt by those who report and tjhose who actually records evenst like births/ marriages/ deaths. My great great greanfather's name is spelt Dunscombe, Dunscomb and Duncomb in different records but they are all the same person. You might find the 1901 census useful. Regards

Dunscombe Family Origins

Hello my name is Dunscombe & I live in Wales. I am new to this & would like to trace back the origins of the Dunscombe family name .
Over the years I have heard the following rumours :- The Dunscombe family originate in Devon in the village of Dunscombe - (I have been there as a young child - all that now exists ithere is a donkey sanctuary !) . The rumours I have heard that the Dunscombe family name split into two several hundred years ago due a to a famiy fued into two parts - Dunscombe & Duncombe. The reason apparently due to part of the family being involved in smuggling along the Devon & Cornwall coast. Apparently some of the family gave up relatives to the hands of the law & the smugglers were hanged. I also know that a some of the Dunscombe clan were on the first few ships to emmigrate to North America .
The name 'Duns' 'combe' is old celtic language and means 'brown' 'valley' and the family sheild is 3 dalmation-like dogs on a shield.
There is apparently an island in the carribean named Dunscombe which the Dunscombe family ran a plantation from.
If anyone else has heard any of this information & can substantiate any of it I would be grateful to hear from you.

Because the Hannah Jadwin who married Thomas Dunscombe was half-sister to the John Jadwin of Virginia and Talbot Co., MD, who founded Jadwin line in America, I did some work on the Dunscombe line in Bermuda. I have this couple's children as Phillip, Thomas, Samuel and Elizabeth. My records run from about 1640 to 1680 for Jadwin-Dunscombe. If this is of interest, I will dig up my records and post a brief.

Hello Dolly, I am tracing the family of John Dunscombe, Ships Captain. The only thing I know is his daughter was Mary Anne Dunscombe, she married William May and migrated to Australia. Mary Anne was born in 1836, she was supposed to have been born in America and when her mother died went to England and married. I sent for certificate of the birth of her son, it only stated her father was Ships Captain. As you can see there is not much to go on only the link with the sea.
Hello Ed, I am trying to find Mary Ann Dunscombe, born abour 1836. She was supposed to have been born in America, her father was John Dunscombe. He was a captian of a ship. Mary married William May in England, they came to Australia in 1866. All attempts to find John Dunscombe seem to point ot Bermuda. I will have to sent o England for the marriage certificate of Mary Ann, maybe then I will find out a bit more. Wondered if you had come accross her. Regards Joan

Dunscomb Family in Gideon, Missouri (ca. 1900)

I am researching the early settlers of Gideon (New Madrid County), Missouri. A Mr. Dunscomb put in the first store in the town in 1901. Does anyone know of a Dunscomb family that was in Southeast Missouri about that time? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Lyle Randolph. eye_in_sky99@yahoo.com

I have never done this before, but would like to start tracing my father's side. My Grandfather was Floyd Dunscomb who married Enid Gillespie. They had two sons. Enid died and he married Lillan Banes. No children from that marriage. The sons were Marvin and Miles. Both are now deceased. Marvin had two children, Enid & Carolyn. Carolyn died at birth. Miles was married and had five children, most of them living in Indiana. His wife Cleo is still living. Floyd had 2 brothers & 2 sisters. Charles & Willard Dunscomb And Ethyl & Birtle Dunscomb. Floyd was born 8-10-1886 and died 12-1968. Their parents were Francis Marian Dunscomb & Julia Zibble Dunscomb. That's as far as I can go. Any help from anyone? Last I found out Charles was a real estate agent around Dtroit. Thanks Enid

My cousins in Ind. continued to use it. As they still do. I never used it either. It was even omitted from my birth certificate. Was there 2 different ones? Ones with it and one without the e?

Hi Patsy, My line is associated with Maine and Bermuda. I don't know of a connection with Iowa, but since it's not a commong surname, perhaps there is a link somewhere. I have discovered a connection with England and have some birth and death information. Do you know if your relations come from England? I've just begun searching, so I don't have much information as yet. Maybe we can share what we discover to see if there is a connection at some point. Nadean

My Dunscombe ancestors had a Bermuda connection but I don't know much about it. I am descended from a William Dunscombe who married Jessie Phillips. They lived in Portland, Maine in the middle 1800's. There is family lore that one of the ancestors was a ship captain (whaling) and that he often visited or lived in Bermuda. I wondered if there might be a British origin. Are we talking about the same line? My e-mail address is nbpedersen@hotmail.com
