Re: William H Dunstan and Sarah E Forrest

William H Dunstan was from Portsmouth VA in 1860 and entered the Civil War as a carpenter for the Confederacy. Captured by the Union, he then signed a loyalty oath and was set free. Somehow, he ended up in the area bound by Philadelphia, Camden, Wilmington and Salem (NJ) and remarried.

From his first marriage to Sarah, his two sons became confectioners with Eugene W being highly successful in wholesale production in NYC while James H ran a smaller operation in Salem NJ. How they learned the trade is unknown but Whitman Chocolates was based in Philadelphia and maybe some apprenticeship program was developed. Some of Eugene’s descendants have Whitman as their first or middle name

William also had two daughters Bertha and Eveline. Bertha married a William H H Titus in Camden NJ and bore 10 children. Eveline's whereabouts is unknown as also is her Mother Sarah.

I have met one of William H Dunstan’s descendants by way of his second wife Annie R Murphy. This descendant is from the Wilmington, DE area. Unfortunately, she says they have no pictures from back then. After several generations, people tend to forget who the people are in old pictures and may throw them away.

I have met another Dunstan relative, a descendant of Eugene W Dunstan who now lives in San Diego. We have worked together off and on the family tree.

I am very interested in William H Dunstan's origins. If he is related to Levin, I could research Levin at the the Gloucester County Historical Society which is especially rich with records and well organized.

I will be happy to share my information. I’m from Kennett Square, PA (mushroom capital of the world!) I am not a Dunstan but my aunt married into that family and I started researching this family for fun for my cousins. I was surprised how little they knew. Hopefully, none of you are too far away to meet. Let me know.
When I posted my query 5 years ago, I had uncovered more facts such as when William H Dunstan, Bertha's father, died which was March 30, 1886. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. I have been able to find exactly where he is buried and visited it several years ago. Unfortunately, the rear portion of the place has reverted to woods and much trash dumped there. I managed to be within a few feet of his grave but there was no grave marker.

In regard to my original questions, what do you know of William H Dunstan’s first wife Sarah E Forrest? When did she die and where? Your sources? The Dunstan’s had four children: Eugene W, James H, Bertha and Eveline (Cassula). I have found out much of Eugene, James and Bertha but nothing of Eveline. Do you also have information on her?
I wonder if I can help. I am looking up Denstans/Dunstans in NJ and wondered about a William H Dunsten, a widower who married Annie R. Murphy in 1864 in Camden, NJ. William was born about 1823 in MD and lived in New Castle, DE in 1880 with his wife, Annie, then died there on 30 Mar 1886. His occupations are listed as ship's carpenter or ship joiner. I was trying to figure out where he came from before 1864, when he married Annie, and I wonder if this is the same man.

The fact he was a widower at the time he married Annie comes from the NJ Division of Archives.

The Dunstan/Denstan line in Gloucester, NJ starts with Levin Densten, born 1782 in VA. My guess is this William H. Dunsten is a cousin, somehow, and their link is back in VA.

Hello,
I've reached a brick wall in my research. :(
I know my gtX4 grandfather was William Christopher Dunstan, born in 1823 in Chester, Cheshire. However, I don't seem to be able to find out who his parents were. On his marriage certificate (1844, to Eliza Gwatkin, in Chepstow, Monmouthshire)the grooms father is listed as a William Dunstan, Sadler.

But I can find no trace of him, apart from the following record:
Text: Dunstan, William, of Salford, gentleman. C. 14 Aug 1817.
Book: Marriage Licences Granted within the Dincese of Chester. (Marriage)
Collection: Cheshire: - Wills and Inventories, 1811-1820 (A-L)
I don't know if this is my ancestor or not, and I don't know how to find his spouse. Any help would be very much appreciated!
Mel

Hi,

My gt gt grandfather was William Henry Dunstan, born about 1841. His father was John Dunstan.

Both father and son were plasterers by trade according to the information given at Williams marriage to Margaret Connolly at Huddersfield, Yorkshire in 1860. Margaret was from Galway in Ireland.

I can find no trace at all of either a John or a William Dunstan who were plasterers, on the 1861 census Margaret was living with her parents but no sign of any Dunstans. Margaret had 3 Dunstan children by 1871 but no sign of William again and in 1878 she remarried.

I am guessing that the Dunstans came from either Yorkshire or Lancashire but Ireland isn't out of the question and it is possible that William emigrated sometime between 1861 and 1871.

Does anybody have any Dunstan/Dunston ancestors who were plasterers?

Stuart Starkey

Hello.
My husband's g-g-grandgrandparents were Henry John Clark and Fannie Dunstan.
May I ask where you found the information that shows they were born in Gippsland, Australia?

Do you know if they knew one another in Australia before immigrating to New Zealand? Any idea of what boats they may have come over on?

Also, it appears that Fannie may have had one illegitimate child born in 1884, named William Rogers Dunstan. The index record does not list a father's name.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello Susan,
My maiden name is Dunstan (Kenneth O'Leary is my uncle mum's brother)and my Dunstan Line also comes from Cornwall,England.
I printed out the attachment you posted and discovered that the Richard Dunstan(b.about 1760 Falmouth)on your Chart is the same Line I'm from.
Richard was born on the 2nd July 1758 in Falmouth, and yes he and Mary Ann Bishop were married on the date you have. Richard died in 1847 and Mary Ann died 1841.
They had (10) children, their daughter and 2nd born, Mary Ann Dunstan b.23rd January 1787 Falmouth, married Richard Dunstone on the 24th February 1812 in Falmouth. Mary Ann died on the 5th December 1842 St.Charles,Falmouth and Richard died bef.June 1841.
They had (2) sons and a daughter, one of the sons Richard Johns Dunstan (yes for whatever reason the name changed back to Dunstan)b.30th December 1813 Falmouth was my gggg/f
Our Dunstan Line in Australia started with George Richard Beckerleg Dunstan the gr.grandson of Richard Dunstone and Mary Ann Dunstan who immigrated out to Australia sometime between 1883 and early 1887,as he married an Irish Lass on the 11th October 1887 in Cooktown, Nth.Qld. Australia. My Grandfather Thomas Henry was their 4th child.
With the wonderful help from a cousin of my father's, William Norman Dunstan(Norm),we now have quite a lot on the Dunstan family from Cornwall and Australia.
Cheers, Rita
Thank you for looking this up! As you presumed, I had already found the New South Wales Registry of Birth Historical Index, but I do appreciate your effort.

I am now trying to find birth information on their older siblings - Dorothy Louise Dunstan, born June 24th 1892 and Thomas Tremayne Dunstan, born Jan 4th 1889/90 or 91. They were both born after the family relocated to Australia, but I can't find them at New South Wales, so maybe they were born in another part of Australia. Any suggestions as to names of areas to search would be helpful. Thanks. Susan

Hi! Lovely to hear from you.We are in the U.K. in the West Country.John Francis Dunstan is my great-great grandfather. He is very interesting. He was a Methodist (Wesleyan) Schoolmaster in a Cornish village called Kilkhampton for nearly50 years. I have a lot about him. He married Eliza Davies in Chelsea, London.I have a copy of their marriage certificate. One of their children was Phillipa and she married another Dunstan from near Truro. At some point they went to Oz and I have records of children born in Yackandandte and Tallangatha in State of Victoria. They came back to U.K.about 1895. Family folklore has it that they had older children who remained in Oz.One of their descendants became Govenor General of the state of Victoria, another Dunstan!!
Try looking up Edward Tremayne Dunstan on internet. He was the son of the schoolmaster and brother to Phillipa. He is quite a character a Methodist preacher who went to South Africa, Sydney Oz,and eventually settled in USA.I have loads about him and have been in touch with one of his descendants in Connecticut.
I would love to know why my g-g-grandmother went to Victoria. It seems a remote, mountainous region around Tallangatha-perhaps it was for mining?
We are off to Spain at the end of the week for nine days so I won't be doing much with the Dunstans this week.Keep in touch. We are back on 29th Sept. Regards, Myra

Phillipa was born in Kilkhampton Cornwall in 1851. E Tremayne Dunstan was their Son. Phillipa died in Falmouth in 1914 aged 72 years.

Hi Myra, I am Susan Eastman, wife of Peter Eastman, grandson of Muriel Tremayne Dunstan, daughter of Edward Tremayne Dunstan. Muriel was born in Cheshire in 1888, raised in Australia, moved to Seattle, Wash, USA as a young woman and lived in NYC, New London, Ct, Alaska, and finally in the Los Angeles, Calif. area where she lived to the ripe age of 97.

I have different information regarding John Francis Dunstan and Eliza Davies children than you list. I am attaching my research, (I hope!) with British census dates, where applicable. (and the new information that you provided). I mostly got my information from the British BMD site and the LDS site. Which of us is accurate? Please advise.

Also, I found my husband's family traveling to and from Australia via Cyndi's List, Australia, Unassisted immigration. I don't have enough information (ages, sex, names) to figure yours out - maybe you can.

What a nice surprise to get a notification from Ancestry that there had been a reply to my Dunstan request! Yes, I am still "doing this", although I had taken a break. I started looking up the Dunstan side of my mother-in-law's family tree a few years ago - she is now 93 and will be happy to hear that more has been discovered about her mother's family. I am at my second home this weekend, so I don't have all my information at hand, but I will talk to my mother-in-law and see if her memory is jogged by your information. I found ETD's family listed on ships to and from Australia - I'll send you that information when I'm back in Connecticut. Maybe she remembers her mother talking about why they went. I would love a scan of the photo.

Please contact me when you find your information. I have more to add. I remember Grandpa mentioning his brother, Harry. Genealogy has become a retirement project for me.

Please contact me direct at:

bjr-NANA@worldnet.att.net

Cousin, Barb

Yes, your info is correct. Richard and Mary are buried in a historical cemetary in New York. Did my research in high school as a project. I'm a desendant of one of those eleven - believe it was Harry. I would have to dig up what info I have now in my forties. They returned to New York after a short time in Michigan. My guess they didn't care for the cold.
