Peggy,
I saw that you posted some information about a year ago that indicates that a Joseph Dunwoody of Indiana might be the son of a Samuel Dunwoody who was from Ireland. Can you give me more information about this relationship and about the Samuel Dunwoody mentioned in your post? I would be happy to share what I have on the Dunwoody family with you.
HI. I am researching Samuel Dunwoody 1799 VA -1855 IN. He married 1-Mariah Landen and 2-Catherine Hall. Mariah is buried in Montgomery county IN. I believe Catherine died and is buried in Sharon Springs Kansas. She followed her son Alonzo Dunwoody and his family there. I'm searching for Samuel's parents and grandparents and any siblings. I descend from Catherine Bowers-Starbuck-Hall-Dunwoody.

Thank you, Lynda

I'm so glad to get your reply. The thread opened so long ago, I feared it would be a "black hole". I did find one posting re Rev Samuel Dunwoody 1799-1852. It was transcribed from microfilm of -Disciples of Christ Historical Society, Nashville Tenn. I was unable to get "into" their site however. That posting also mentioned a marriage to Maria Lander saying they had 12 children. I'm very interested in pursuing this line and will email you directly. Thank you.

I descend from Caroline Katherine [Catherine] Dunwoodie. Boone Co 1860 Census lists Catherine Dunwoodie b abt 1820 Ohio. Listed with her is William C. Starbuck, a son from the first marriage. I have not seen the entire census image, only an index so there may be others listed in this family. She was also married to a Miles Hall previous to Mr Dunwoodie. She was widowed two times before the 1860 census.

Mr Dunwoody may have been a preacher. Am very interested in confirming this Mr Dunwoody [Dunwoodie] and am willing to share re Katherine and her family if interested.

I'm searching for info on a Mr Dunwoody who married Catherine [Katherine] Hall sometime between in Boone Co Indiana. She was head of household in 1850 census so, presumedly, he died before then.
This census lists a child, Elvyaa L.E. Hall age 4/12 so he must have died at least 9 months previous to the census date.

If this is your Dunwoody line please reply.
Kaye...I am once again back looking at Jane McClurkin and am wondering if you have turned up anything. I've tried to look at the Dunwoody/Dunwades as another avenue. There were certainly several families with this name coming down from VA and into the Carolinas. My theory is that Jane was already here. She was not on any of the ships that came in 1772. Where did you get the Dunwade name?

I just happened to check this site. I no longer have my computer or email, but I am "cat" sitting for my son and decided to check out this area again. My grandmother was Adella Dunwoody. She had (as far as I know) 1 sister named Clara Belle, and two brothers Frank Dunwoody and Grover Cleveland Dunwoody. Grandma's father was George Washington Dunwoody. I have the civil war bugle that was handed down in the family to my father from Samuel Dunwoody who was a bugler with the 5th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. I also have a centenial book on Ohio that tells a little about Loammi and Samuel's brother Daniel. I was born and raised in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio which is where all of the above are buried in Greenwood Cemetary. I would love to have any info you can give me on them. I don't have a lot, but would be glad to share what I have. You can snail mail me at 5018 State Rt. 96A, Romulus, New York 14541. Please do not try to email me as it will not reach me. Again, I would like any info you care to share on the Dunwoodys.

I have a photocopied manuscript that is a hodgepodge of early information on Dunwoody descendants originating with Scotch-Irish Dunwoodys in souith PA, including Chester and Lancaster counties. There are biographies and historical info on Jesse Joseph and Mary Rives Dunwoody. They had lived near Willowbranch, IN and sold that in 1908 and moved to Edmunds, ND. The descendants are all over the map, ND, MO, etc. Allied lines are Busby, Roosevelt, Bullard, and too many to list. If this is your family, please reply and I will be happy to send you this manuscript. It was previously kept in a house where people smoked (thought I should mention that).

One of my daughters lives in Durham so I have had an opportunity to check out both the NC and SC Archives (not knowing exactly what I am looking for, but accidently falling into this and that). Last winter made a trip to Chester and Spartanburg which proved, if nothing else to help me sort out the good and the less than accurate research on the message boards. Think that it might be best if you email me at: genevawogi@yahoo.com and we can go from there.
James Dunwoodey oaths 1778 disputed territory

OHIO The Cross Road of our Nation RECORDS PIONEER FAMILIES 1992 Volume XXXIII No 2 p078
Carlsbad City Library Carlsbad CA read July 2000 by Betty Turner

p078 begins a relation of the legible papers found in the pension application of Thomas GADDIS (S 4292) BA-J: MLB (roll 1039). The first few paragraphs of this genealogical publication explain that Thomas Gaddis was in the Monongalia County VA militia. When the border between VA and PA was run, his residence was found to be located in Fayette Co PA. He died in 1834 in Clinton Co OH.
The note of interest to DUNWOODY researchers is found on p081 of this genealogical publication, reputed to be a record of the oaths of allegience sworn before Thomas Gaddis during the Revolutionary War. On 25 July 1778, in Monongalia Co VA three men swore allegience:
Zophar BLATCHLY, James DUNWOODEY, and Richard BALL.

Would anyone familiar with this DUNWOODY family or this area please contact me... IÕve several coincidences and concerns regarding this James Dunwoody/Dunwoodey.

Naomi Emmich emmich@bendcable.com

Re: James Dunwoodey oaths 1778 disputed territory

The Library of Virginia online records show land awarded to a James Dunwoody in what is now Monongalia Co WV. James' land grants for land awarded as a settlement right, for his settlement on Sandy in 1770. IF he was of age in 1770, his birth would have been prior to 1750. IF these grants went to the same James who appeared before Gaddis to swear the oath of allegience we can expect he was born before 1750. IF the oath and the grants are unrelated, the James who swore allegience in 1778 was born before 1757 or earlier, being of age in 1778.
I've not been able to find a James missing from the Pennsylvania families of Dunwoodys who survived the Revolutionary War. Any help you might offer in placing this James Dunwoody (or these Jameses if not one in the same) would be appreciated.

I don't believe the James Dunwoody of Monongalia Co WV records for 1770 (and possibly the 1778 oath before Thomas Gaddis) is the son of David.
I've been given, but not yet checked this:
from Tom Sharpless:
Penna Archives 6th Series vol III, page 263 has military rolls for 1784, Capt Levi Evan's Co. of West Whiteland & North Part of Goshen: James Dunwoody and John Dunwody.
This makes me feel David's son James had a continuing presence nearer Philadelphia.
I'm still only speculating on these family configurations yet! Thanks for your report.

My mother's Ancestors - the McCagues - are linked to the Dunwoodys of Dunmurry, near Belfast. On 28th Nov 1880 Margaret McCague married John Dunwoody of Killyvane, Co. Monaghan. The Dunwoody family moved to Dunmurry in the 1940s, I believe. Richard Dunwoody, the Champion Jockey is from this line of Dunwoodys.
