Hello,

There are Dupas family members in Moreauville, Mansura, Marksville, Simmesport and other parts of LA and through out the U.S. My understanding is that many Dupas's were born in Moreauville but moved out at some point in their lives to other surrounding towns near Moreauville.

Hope you are successful in getting an answer!

I was a tremendous fan of Ralph Dupas. I even went to New orleans from New hampshire in 1957 just to see him fight a stiff named ray Portilla. For the relative seeking information on his court battle over what race he was in order to appease Louisiana laws that no white couls box a black in public this took place sometime in 1958-1960 all information can be found in the New Orleans courthouse archives or at the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper.
What is most disturbing about Ralph's life is that he was so fast few could hit him--then he changed style and got hurt ----dementia all the days of his life---I loved him, what a wonderful style for me to watch--a dancing master

Paul Depas from Louisiana

I am in search of any relatives for my Grt-Grandfather Paul Depas (Born abt.1892) . He is from Avoyelles, LA. My family's big mystery is the correct spelling of the last name. His spelled his surname "Depas", however, his daughter (my grandmother) spelled her surname "Dupass".

Paul left Avoyelles, LA abt. 1917 when he joined the Army. After leaving the military he moved to Alabama where he resided until his last days in 1977.

The little information that has been passed verbally (in my family) is Paul had plenty of siblings, and had a very large family in Louisiana.

If you have any information about my Grt-Grandfather Paul, it would be helpful. Please contact me at latimaa@yahoo.com

My family is having a Reunion in 2009 and it would be wonderful to have connected with other Depas/Dupass/Dupas family members.
Myrtle was a Sampson and she had and Uncle named Lester Sampson, who used to live in De Ridder next door to Myrtle Sampson-St.Romain. Myrtle was married to George St. Romain, Sr. He is now dead and has been for some time now. Con Lester, her uncle, and con Pearl, his wife moved back to Mansura, Louisiana many years ago where they both died.

I would love to get an oral biography from her regarding our family history. Maybe you know my sister, Rose Sampson.

I am familiar with the club. I used to go to it. We called your aunt Mary, con-Lawrence aka cousin Lawrence. Her son's Irvin and Matthew aka Matches also moved to De Ridder, Louisiana, and still live there. They raised their children there also. I saw they a few weeks ago at Mary Lockart's funeral aka todean Lockart. She was a Francisco, who is also related to us on both sides (my mother and my father).

My mother and I call each other everyday. Her brother Peter Sampson lives next door to her. He had a stroke, from which he has never fully recovered. On the Large Road, lives my aunt Agnes McKinley, my mother's oldest sister and my aunt Celina Sampson who used to be Celina Simmons. They live next door to one another. Up the street from there is con Lawrence and con Edwards' house, where their son L.J. Lee and his wife live. Spellman and Noward, and Murray also still live in Mansura. I am not sure of their addresses, but I go to Mansura often, and see them at mass. If you would like to call my mother, her number is 318-964-5159.

My grandfather, Leonce 'aka Leon' Sampson, lived off of that street. During the time he lived there, and I was a child, that street didn't have a name, nor pavement. My Aunt Mary, owned a club called 'Lee's' that was on that street. Maybe your mom is related to me

I am told that all Dupas's are dark. That is certainly true of the Dupas's in Louisiana. The high-cheek bones and Roman noses are all typical also of the ones that I know. I am a Dupas. My father name was Raymond Paul Dupas. His father was Pierre. Pierre's father was Julien. I cannot go any further because I don't know my ancestors beyond those two.

I live in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I teach French and Spanish. I hope that this helps you.

One more thing, there is a Dupas Island in Canada. But, I am told that we originated from France.

I always thought it was on my mother's side of the family (Francisco). Currently I live in Asheville, NC. Trying to reach you if we are related. I have done alot of research of the Sampson side of the family and your mom may be able to connect some of the pieces that I have. Please get in touch with me if we are related.
I have checked w/my uncle Michel Dupas in Conches, France [Seine et Marne]. He is originally from LaMeuse. His father was also from La Meuse. He believes his great grandparents arrived from Lithuania. The family name was always Dupas. They are very dark featured, appearing possibly Arabic or Hispanic, w/black hair, brown eyes & very dark skin. They all have Roman noses & high cheek bones. I'm not sure that any emigres in the new world are related to this extension of my family, but we are interested to find out.

father of Antoine Ernest Dupas . Mathurin (Mauthrie) Dupas was married to a MRs. Steven Dupas not sure if Steven was a first name or a maiden name or if she was a widow of Stevens. I hav e found out from another family member that Mathurin (Mathrie) and his wife had at least three children. Octave Stevens Dupas, Antoine Ernest Dupas, and Amadie (Amadee)Stevens Dupas. Mathurin Dupas first appeared in the 1838 New Orleans City Directory, and his name last appears in the City Directory of 1853. found the death notice and found a Mathieu Dupas age 45 yrs. (W) dying on September 12, 1850. It is my opinion that this is his date of death. His puts his birth circa 1805.
