Durbin Lincoln Connection

A new book is available of the history of Christian County and Taylorville Illinois called:

The Last Stop: Lincoln & the "Mud Circuit".

Lincoln represented several Durbins as clients in Taylorville. It provides a significant amount of information about many of these early settlers. The author is a descendent of the Durbin's who first settled the area.
For more info see:
http://www.alanbower.com

Re: Jacob P Durbin from Ohio, son of Nicholas Durbin of Maryland?

Jacob Dirbon [Durbin] (age 16-26) appears in the 1820 census (Short Creek, Harrison Co. Ohio) with 2 sons and 2 daughters, and again in the 1830 census (Short Creek, Harrison Co. Ohio) with 5 sons and 3 daughters. In 1840, Jacob P. Durbin is listed in the census living in Mt. Pleasant Twp., Jefferson Co. Ohio with 7 sons and 5 daughters. In 1850 Jacob P. Durbin (age 58, born in VA) is living in Washington Twp., Tuscarawas Co. Ohio with wife Elizabeth, 54 b. in VA, Mordicai - 21, Nathan W. - 17, Mary E. - 16, and Joseph J. - 13 (all children born in Ohio).

Ancestry.com contains more than one public family tree with Jacob P. Durbin as the son of Nicholas Durbin (born abt. 1738 in Maryland). Although no evidence is offered to support this assignment, I have found data that are somewhat consistent. This Nicholas Durbin and his family are described in "The Durbin and Logsdon Genealogy with Related Families 1626-1998" - including the last will and testament of Nicholas Durbin (executed 10 Dec 1811, in Jefferson County, Ohio), which lists his children, the last of which (youngest?) is a Jacob Durbin. However, on page 232 of this volume, the year of birth for son Jacob is indicated as ca. 1774 (in contrast to Jacob P. Durbin's estimated year of birth, 1792).

This volume also states that Nicholas lived in Fayette Co. PA in 1799, which is supported by census date - in 1800 the family of Nicholas Durben is listed in Dunbar Twp., Fayette Co. PA with 5 sons (one under age 10) and 2 daughters. Dunbar, PA is about 15 miles north of the PA/VA border, and since this border was the subject of dispute during this time period, it is not unreasonable to see Jacob P. Durbin list his state of birth as VA in 1850. If Jacob was born in ~1792, Nicholas would have been about age 54, and his mother (Honora Logsdon) would have been about age 43. In the 1810 census, Nicholas Durbin is listed in Dunbar, Fayette Co. PA living with only one son (age 16-25) - no females are listed, so Honora must have died between 1800-1810 (she is not listed in his will of 1811).

Nicholas died in Short Creek Twp., Jefferson Co. Ohio in 1811. After 1813, Short Creek Twp. was part of Harrison County. In 1814, three sons of Nicholas - Thomas, Elisha, and Lawrence - are listed among the 173 voters in Short Creek, Harrison Co. Ohio. If Jacob P. lived in Short Creek at this time, he would have been too young yet to vote, and thus not listed. As indicated above, the first evidence placing Jacob Durbin in Short Creek, Harrison Co., Ohio is the 1820 census at an age consistent with all other sources, except for the the Durbin-Logsdon Genealogy record mentioned above.

According to a descendant of Jacob P. Durbin (Martie Durbin Harris)one of Jacob's grandsons was named Thomas Logsdon Durbin, providing one more clue (the Logsdon name), to support the connection to the Maryland Durbins.

For those interested, the information that I have collected to date on the descendants (Durbin, Henry, Best, Dutton) of Jacob P. Durbin (my 4th great-grandfather) is outlined at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/r/o/Robert-M-Cr...

I only have pictures of Francis Valentine Durbin, his wife Nancy and some of the children. I do have some stories that my mother had written that I can give you. I have a copy of William W Durbin's Missouri Death Certificate that has Drucilla Simmon(s) as the wife. I am sure this is how your Grandmother got her name. I would be happy share any information that I have. Most of what I have is what my mother did back in the early 80's by talking to the oldest living family members at that time. She past away at a young age so I only have her notes. You can e-mail me at tammy.moody@us.army.mil.

Jeanne,

One of these days, perhaps this Fall, I want to get up there and photograpah all of the headstones and note what is written on each of them. I tried to get a start on it a couple of years ago, but my Dad was with me and he kept telling me stories about the people buried there. I figured the headstones would always be there, but I couldn't pass up on hearing Dad's stories.

I have a photograph on the wall in my office of a sign that was on the side of the Sunfish Mall. It reads, "Durbin's Gas and Electric Sunfish, KY 42284." What is funny about that is that I work for the Florida Public Service commission that regulates electric and gas companies.

Dick Durbin

Re: Allen Durbin/Amy Fisher line

I'm still seeking the Durbin info, only my correction is this. The name is Willis Marion Durbin that married Gracie Abaigail "Abai" Davis. They would have married abt 1865, judging from the 1870 Census in Savannah, Hardin Co, TENN. Children at that time are Amanda Jane, born 1866, Henry, born 1867 and Mary Lou, born 1870. Mary Lou is my grandmother and she would marry Norris Sidney Smith 7 Sept, 1887 in Hardin co., TN.
Still seeking the parents of Gracie Abigail "Abai" Davis. There is an Abai Davis, age 18, on the 1860 Census in Precinct 8 of Butler, ALA and that would fit her age.
Listed also are S. Davis, female, age 30, born GA
and H. Davis, male, age 19. Both H. and Abai are listed as born in ALA. A Calvin Davis also shows up later in 1870 census in Hardin Co, and I think he is related to Abai.
Still interested in the HD aspect and think it has to go back to Allen (father of Willis Marion) and his parents..who most say is Augustine Durbin/Sarah Richardson. Allen Durbin married Mary Amy Fisher, and we know Allen disappeared before 1880.
Does anyone know where Augustine and Sarah buried? The Durbins were in Lawerence Co, Tn around 1820/1830 from Hardin Co, Kentucky, and scattered to Hardin Co, TN Decatur,Co (TN) and down in Alabama. Joseph Durbin, one of the brothers married Nancy Archer and he also disappears.
Please respond if any sounds familiar or email me direct at sweetlipsfarm@yahoo.com
Judy Malone
Re: Ignatius Durbin

More on Ignatius Durbin from book referenced previously: If IGNATIOUS was ever in Georgia at all, he stayed a very short time.
We
> find him first in Louisiana in 1812. He purchased land in Washington Parish
> in 1812. (This from American State Papers.) Erma says, "he had a land claim
> which was settled in that year in St. Helena and St. Tammany Meredians. This
>
> from the State Land Office and all the information they could give me."
> IGNATIOUS DURBIN married Mary Ricks, daughter of Eleanor (Thompson)
Ricks
> and Johannon Ricks. They probably married late in 1812 or early 1813, as
> their first child, Nancy, was born September 13, 1813, probably in
> Louisiana. A search of the records in Washington or Clarke County, Georgia,
> may reveal the marriage. It is entirely possible, however, that they were
> married in Louisiana.
> IGNATIOUS DURBIN is in the 1820 census of Washington Parish, Louisiana,
> next to Johannon Ricks: 2 m under 10, 1 m 26-45, 2 f under 10, and 1 f
> 26-45.
> Erma says IGNATIOUS moved to Mississippi sometime in the 1820's. He
shows
> up in Yazoo County on the 1830 census of that county: 2 m under 10, 2 m
> 10-20, 1 m 40-60, 2 f under 10, 1 f 10-20, 2 f 20-45, and 1 f 60 and over.
> The old lady in the household must be Eleanor (Thompson) Ricks, wife of
> Johannon Ricks, and mother of Mary (Ricks) DURBIN.
> He probably moved to Carroll County in the 1830's, although he does not
> appear on any early tax roll of Carroll County.
> The old pioneer home in Carroll County was located about 15 miles from
> Greenwood and about 12 miles from Carrollton, near Teoc and Clark's Mill,
> but it is now extinct. I visited the old home place in about 1936. It was a
> crude, log, 2-story dwelling, uninhabited at that time, and in a remarkably
> good state of repair. The house stood intact until it burned about 1940. At
> the time I visited the place, I was told that the house was well over one
> hundred years old.
I recently received the following information: The earliest DURBIN we know anything about with any certainty is IGNATIOUS DURBIN. He kept a notebook (which I have seen) and the first notation is that "IGNATIOUS and William DURBIN came from near London, England." No date is given. I have always considered this to be his birth place, but Erma DURBIN Chandler was of the opinion he might have been born in this country, in Georgia. I go along with the theory that IGNATIOUS was born in England. He was born January 22, 1787, according to the booklet. There is no further reference to William, but it is thought that he went further north. This from a book DURBIN and Logsdon Genealogy with Related Families

My gggrandfather, Edward C. Durbin was born in Yazoo Co, Mississippi abt 1841. We can't find the name of his father, but he was born in OH and died in Mississippi before 1860. Edward remained there briefly before going to war, then ended up in IN where his remaining family had gone. His mother was Catherine, brother named William Philip, sister named Elizabeth. (All that is known). Do you have any connection or knowledge concerning this Durbin family?

My g.g.grandfather, Edward C. Durbin, was born in Mississippi about 1841.On the 1860 census, he was listed as a laborer in the household of Catherine Griffin after his father had died. Later Edward joined his remaining family in Indiana, where he lived out his life.
No one seems to know the name of Edward's father, but his mother's name was Catherine. I have wondered about a possible connection to the Griffins. If you have any information I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I got a lot of information on Uncle Frank and Aunt Ollie from Doneta. Her dad and I were second cousins. Do you know anything about Drucilla's family? I have info from Lucinda's granddaughter, same on Mary and Anna about their branches, but have never been able to trace Drucilla after the 1900 census. I do have pictures of her and her children. Would you be interested in sharing info?
