Thanks for all the information. Iris R Briggs was my great-aunt. I do not know what her middle name was, but since it's listed as Lois (Iris) R Duree on the Census I will try to find out. She always went by the name Iris, but it's possible that her middle name was Rovana. Will have to find out. My research is mainly with my Briggs line. The information that you have given has been very helpful and I will add it to my genealogy. Thanks again for all your help. If I find out Aunt Iris's middle name I will let you know. It may solve the mystery.
Re: Jeff Seth Duree

The early records that Howard Durie left were extensively documented through legal records and first person narratives. However, the records of the later generations relied on questionnaires sent to family members and some of those reports were not as accurate. The information on Jeff Seth may have been supplied by one of his half siblings or even by a cousin. The name Rovana may have been a first or middle name of Iris's or the supplying relative may have given the wrong name. Most of the information on this family between 1690 and the early 1800s is very reliable. Info from about 1880 on . . . not so much.

I missed a few details in my last post. Francis Marion's 4th wife, Anna, who outlived him remarried 3 Dec 1904 to James W. Pretty. Francis Marion is buried in the Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa.

Later in the book there is a contradiction to the information I gave you from page 200. According to page 255, Samuel Omer and Mabel (Myrtle died young) were the children of Francis Marion and Mary E. Cook and not the children of Anna Forbes. Only Blanche and Jeff Seth seem to be the children of Anna.

Samuel Omer (a half-sibling of Jeff Seth) and his wife Maude M. Hasty used the DuRee form of the name. He is also the last person recorded as having possession of a family bible belonging to Samuel Durie b. 1775. Maude was county recorded for Keokuk County, IA for many years and furnished Howard Durie with photocopies from this bible. They adopted a niece of Maude's, Lucille born about 1904. I assume that she inherited the bible. She married a D. Louis Stark, but the information ends there.

There is no further information in the book on Blanche. Is that your grandmother? I'd love to have her information if that is possible.

Iris Briggs Duree was my fathers Aunt. Jeff Seth Duree was an electrician at the theater in Des Moines. Family story is the he was on a ladder changing a lightbulb when he fell and broke his neck. He lived but was immobile. About a year later, Aunt Iris brought home a kitten. Jeff Seth Duree was laying on the couch and the kitten jumped down ontop of him and reinjured his neck. He died sometime later. ....Story is as told to me by my Father, her nephew.
Don't know if he was married before.
Daniel Duree

Hello,
I am a Duree descendent and am fortunate enough to have inherited a book of nearly 500 pages on this family. There are about 9 different Daniels included. I don't think that the two Daniel Durees you mention are father and son. Daniel Duree b. 5 Feb 1812, married Mary(Polly)Witt about 1836. They had 7 children but my record does not show a son Daniel.
Now, I have a Daniel Duree b. about 1845, married 27 Dec 1851 to Eliza Kelly, divorced in 1876, no children. He married a widow Mary Catharine Bain Cooper 8 Mar 1876. She had one child, John, by her first marriage.

Children of Daniel Mary Catharine:
Annie B. b. 25 Sept 1877
Ida M. b.14 Mar 1879
Charles M. b. 19 Mar 1882
William H. b. 26 Apr 1888
Mary M. b. 21 Mar 1890
Arthur b. 25 Sept 1893

If this is who you are looking for, I can send some narrative information on Daniel and others. Just let me know and I'll be happy to share what I have.

Suzanne Hunt Thielmann

Hello Curt,
I don't think I have a match for you. Here are the Sarah DUREE's listed in Howard Durie's Book.
Sarah Ann DUREE b. 1820 m. Hugh COX
Sarah DUREE b. 1830-31 m. Unknown MILLER Sarah DUREE b. 1854 m. George DUNLAP
Sarah Etta DUREE b. 1865 m. Seth BOYLES
Sarah Ellen DUREE b. 1870 m. John HOBBS

Now, under alternate spellings . . .
I find Sarah DURIEs beginning in 1733 and Sarah DURYEAs beginning in 1791 but none in the 1880-90s. No Sarahs under DuREE, DuRIE or under the original family spelling of DURIER.

Could Sarah have been a middle name? My family searched for years for a Robert in another line only to find that he was Charles Robert who went by his middle name. Aaargh! I went in by the "side doors" and researched siblings of my direct line and found the information that I needed.

Good Luck, Sorry I wasn't of any help!

Does anyone have any information on the following:

Children of George Edward Duree b.24 Dec 1853, d. prior to 1915 and Julia Belle Butler. They were Olie Duree, Minnie Duree, Ernest R. Duree and Laura E. Duree. May have lived in KS, AR, MO.

Children of John Jackson Duree b. 24 Nov 1857, d.17 July 1920 and Cora Yuncker. They were Albert Duree, John Duree, Vernice Duree (mar Glen Morrison), Hattie Duree (mar Everett Morrison), David Duree, Emma Duree. Liveve near Galena KS.

Children of Joseph Alexander Duree b. 14 Oct 1866, d. Aug 1947 and Minnie Aiken. They were Pearle Duree, Edith Duree, James Duree, Rene Duree. Lived near Galena, KS.

These "children" would have been 1st cousins of my father. I do not know birth dates on any of these cousins but my grandmother was the youngest(1872) in her family and her children were born in 1896, 1903 and 1913. With all of that in mind, I estimate their birth dates to be between 1870 and 1900.

The Jean Durier line does not appear to have that spelling. Although there is little hard evidence of the family prior to Jean's birth in Utrech, Holland in 1654, there is every possibility that they were French. His parents were Pierre Durier and Marguerite Charoy. Many French Huguenots fled France to Holland, Germany and the Jersey to escape religious persecution. In addition, Jean came to the French settlement in Bergen County, NJ when he immigrated to the new world about 1686.

Sorry I could not be of any help.

Re: DURE or DUREE origins in England/France

Most of the Durees in the US are descendents of Jean Durier who immigrated here about 1685 from Utrecht, Holland. His parents were Pierre Durier and Margaret Charoy who left France before 1654. The spellings include: Durier, Durie, Duree, Duryea, DuRee, and DuRie. They are all from this same line, but changed spellings. The Durees are mostly from the Samuel Durie family who migrated to what is now KY shortly after the Revolutionary War. The research in Howard Durie's book does not have any direct connections to any of the places you named.

I have a Nicholas Dure born ca. 1837 in Ontario. He married Matilda Gibbs around 1860/62. She was from Brock Twp, Ontario and lived near Cannington. They had at least 6 children and immigrated with Matilda's aunt to St. Vincent & Hallock, Minnesota via Manitoba around 1880. Matilda died 1924 in Minnesota but I haven't been able to find where or when her husband died or anything about their children. I have some more related Dures married into other lines of my ancestors.
Please e-mail me privately and I'd be happy to exchange some information.
Karen

DURE or DUREE origins in England/France

I am trying to find out more about some DUREs, at one time known as DUREEs, with acute accent on the first "e" (according to family story) who lived in Devonshire, England in the late 18th and and 19th centuries (some are still there, and they may have been there much earlier, but I have not been able to verify the links yet.) Family story says they were originally from France, near the Belgian border, but I don't know how far back that was; it could have been a long time..
Common family forenames are Nicholas, Robert, Edward, Elizabeth.
Does anyone have any information about links to England, especially Devonshire or to this part of France? The name apparently had origins in Picardy and Alsace-Lorraine, which corresponds to family story of them being near the Belgian border.
One John N/Michelmore DURE migrated to Ontario Canada in early 19thC., and his firstborn Nicholas, b.Toronto, may have moved to Manitoba and/or Minnesota late 19thC. or early 20thC. Somebody named Nicholas did in fact move to MN, and he is connected somehow - he was born 1837 in Ontario and died after 1924 probably in MN. Siblings probably remained in Ontario.
Also, do any of you know if any of your people were Huguenots? This is another avenue I am exploring, as there seem to be some (still shaky) grounds for thinking they might have been.
I would appreciate it if the person who has the 500page book on the DUREEs (whose name I have forgotten) would let me know whether any of this fits with her book - even a "no" would be helpful. Also I am terribly curious what the book is, where and when it was published etc. Thanks very much..
Re: DURE or DUREE origins in England/France

I have some information about the Dure's of Devon.
Nicholas Dure (born 1754) married Hannah Pepperell(born 1753)in June 1776. They had seven children, Edward,Robert, Nicholas, Rebecca, John, Mary and Hannah,.Nicholas, christened in 1782,at Ford Independent Chapel, married Betty Michelmore (born 1786) in 1807. They had four children that I know of. There was John, Nicholas, Anna and Elizabeth (Betsy). John and Nicholas migrated to Canada in 1831 and 1836 respectively. They settled in Brock Township.
Anna too migrated to Canada but I do not know the year. I do not have any details about Betsy.
I do not know where Nicholas (born 1754) was born. My understanding is that this line of Dures originated
in France near the French/German border near Meurtre and Moselle. Pleae e-mail privately and I would be happy to exchange some information. David

Do you have an Albert Duree in your family? My g-g-aunt Lucy Stacks married Albert Duree in Ottumwa Wapello County in 1879. I am trying to figure out what happened to her. If there is any connection I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you,

Rachel

Suzanne, Thank you for your reply. Do you know when Albert Duree married his second wife? That would help pin down Lucy's date of death. Thanks, Rachel
