Hello Cousin,

I know I'm two and a half months late in responding to your post on the DURMAN Message Board, but just had to ask you about the data for your "Crockett" DURMAN ancestor.

I manage the DURMAN Mailing List and this Message Board. I have "Crockett" in my database but didn't know previously the name of the second "wife". I would love to correspond with you and get all the details you have on "Crockett" and fill in the blanks, so to speak. Also, if there's anything I can help you with, please just ask.

Yer Cuz,
George W. Durman
Knoxville, TN
Crockett Durman or Durmon

After several weeks of searching, my friend and I have probably found the answer to many questions about Crockett Durmon. If you are wondering why he disappeared for several decades, its because he ran off with his wife's (Mary Elizabeth Hall) first cousin (Mary Lucretia Slusser)and moved to Missouri with her to work in hotels along the railroad. To confuse everyone more, he apparently changed his name to David Crockett (David was his middle name) and had two children with Lucretia. The moved along the railroad until eventually settling in Osage Kansas, where he worked as a shoemaker until Lucretia's death there. He then moved back to Pulaski county Virginia, and remarried his first wife Mary Elizabeth (who had married at least two other times since he left). He lived with her until he died. Amazing story, but the puzzle pieces fit together if you dig a little! I am a decendant of "David" and Lucretia's son, David Amos Crockett. Our family never knew of his Durman past until a couple of weeks ago! What a shock it has been! Hope this helps all of you!

I am researching the family of O.E. Dalton who lived in Drew county, Arkansas and raised his family there. Some of his children include Martha Jane Dalton, Florence Dalton (Langston), Emma V Dalton (Diarman), John W Dalton, Marcus Dalton, Charles Dalton, Ida Estella Dalton (married William J Robertson), and a few more. I am particularly interested in John W Dalton who moved to Bradley County, Arkansas and was murdered there by James Byrd. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about any of these people or their descendants.

Surname DURMAN In England

I read a post here mentioning the surname DURMAN in Middlesex County.

My name is George W. DURMAN. I live in Knoxville, TN, USA.

In our research of the DURMAN surname, we hit a "brick wall" years ago. We have our DURMAN ancestors back to a William DURMAN in 1750 in Montgomery Co., VA, but can trace no farther. We found one DURMAN with land holdings in MD in the 1600's but can not tie him in to our line.

I'm writing to see if anyone has done any research on this surname, and to see if anyone has evidence of emigration from England to the Colonies in the 1600's or 1700's. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
George W. Durman
I don't have this David or John in my database, but am almost certain he is from a branch that left TN, went to KY, then to IN and IL.
Listing SURNAMES In the "Surnames" Box When Posting Messages

Some Board users are confused about which surnames to list when posting here to the Boards. The proper procedure is to list ONLY those surnames that appear in the body of your post. In other words, you do NOT list all the surnames you are researching. And, it is important to list ALL surnames that appear in the message body.

The box for Surnames is searched whenever anyone does a global search at either Ancestry or Rootsweb, and users will see those Board posts that deal with the surnames listed there.

If you include all the surnames you are researching in the Subject box, and, if you list "Clore" and the post doesn't concern that surname, anyone searching for it will get "hits" for any posts you have made where you listed that name in the box, EVEN THOUGH YOU DID NOT MENTION "CLORE" IN THE BODY OF YOUR POST.

I know it's not clear what you should type in there, but just remember, it's ONLY for those surnames that you mention in the body of the post.

Regards,
George W.
David A. Durman - Kentucky to Idaho

I take headstone photos here in Canyon County, Idaho, and often get curious about some of those mentioned on headstones. I have a David A. Durman, 1856-1930, who, according to the census was born in Kentucky, possibly to a John Durman. In 1860 David and family were already in Iowa.
Anyway, I have a headstone photo for him, and a newspaper article stating that he died in California, but was buried here in the Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell, Canyon County, Idaho. Anyone interested simply contact me. There is no cost. Am just curious if I can help someone with their research.

Hi Ernie and Keith,
My Durmans came from Sussex so I have not connected to the ones in Somerset yet, but my great grandfather was William Durman who ended up in Cornwall and Devon, having been born in Chidham Sussex. I searched the Civil registration for all Durmans from 1837 to about 1900 so will look up Willam Walter in a minute, and see if I have him. I also have copy of all the Durmans in the IGI on paper. Can look at that too.
Pam
Here you are Keith,
It was Walter William in the index, not William Walter.

I am still looking for John Durman born about 1754-1760. Is there nobody out there in England looking for Durmans???
My John lived in Bosham, Sussex, and on Hayling Island, in Hampshire. He was a shepherd, and may have been born in the area of Didling and Treyford, Sussex, in England. There were a lot of Durmans in that area at the time. John died on Hayling Island in 1816, supposely at age 64. His first wife was Olive Clear, they were married in 1787 at Chalton in Hampshire. His second wife, my great grandmother, was Sarah Coats from Chidham in Sussex. They married in 1804 at Portsea, (Portsmouth) Hampshire, England. My name is Pamela Durman Freestone.

Some of the names keep coming up in research.
We have met Patricia Stebbins at a family reunion in Arkansas and we have some of the same family stories passed down through the years. We will try to contract her family and get her address for you and pass along your e-mail address.

Darren,
I suspect that my Thomas b.1814 is not the brother of your William b.1815, because in the 1820 census, William b.1790 had only one son in that age range. Meanwhile, John b.1787 had three sons in that age range. Are you sure your William b.1815 is the son of William b.1790? If so, I don't think he could have had a brother b.1814.

1820
William Durman 110010-20010
John Durman 300010-11010

I also read a post somewhere stating that Thomas Durman b.1814 is the son of John & Nancy, not William & Eunice.

Thanks,
Scott
g3troll@yahoo.com

Note messages from Keith and Pam relative Durman in England. My 4th great grandfather is Francis Durman b. abt 1711 in Beer Crocombe, Somerset. He married Rachel Munden 25 Oct 1733 in Beer Crocombe. The line then goes off to Jeffery where Sarah and Hannah Durman married George and Thomas Jeffery - 2 sisters married 2 brothers. If this appears to fit, can supply more info. Please advise.

It sure looks like it is mostly likely thast your Thomas was a brother to my William, but we will need more info to confirm that.

My William was also a blacksmith and lived in Montgomery County, VA until they lived to Greene County, Tennesee in the late 1850's. William's middle name was Francis and also had a daughter named Frances. It is amazing how the first names seem to be used from generation to generation.

I will try to research more to see if there can be a definite connection made. Let mw know if you come across any additional info.

Best Regards,

Darren

This looks like it could be the same Thomas, but we would need to find more information to confirm this. I do have information on my William and this Thomas' parents, which are William & Eunice(Reed) Durman and a little beyond them.

I will try to do some more research to help see if this could be the same Thomas. If you do have anything additional information just me know. Do you know the parents names of your Thomas or the maiden name of Eliza?

Darren

I have a few Durmans on my Tree who were born in the mid 1800's. One was a Captain, Captain William Laver Durman, if you would like details I can send via e-mail. I'm guessing these Durmans are from the South West of England as that's where most of my ancestors on my Dad's side are from. I only have Birth and Death dates and a few spouse names.

We do find the Durman name being spelled in many other ways in the early census records. Most common misspelling is Durham, Derman, and Durmon. The names you listed don't ring any bell with me with my line. If there is anything else I could help with let me know.

My maiden name was Durmom. My grandfather was Noal Durmon of AR. My ggrandfather was John Franklin Dirman of AR. We believe that my gggrandfather was Joseph Diarman of KS? Joseph had 4 children Ollie , Libbie, W.J. , and John Franklin. Have any of you found these types of spellings in your name changes. Thank you for this site! Sincerely, Trish Stebbins

Her parents are reported to have been Jonathan Blythe and Anne ?? of Cherokee blood.

Samuel was on the 1840 census in what became Rabut Co., GA but some say he was b in what became Oconee, SC. He died in Yell Co., AR.

ANY information on these folks would be deeply appreciated.
After 15 years, I will be glad to get anything.
Geri Kennedy-Young
GKYoung72@aol.com
