Hello Sean!

Thank you very much for your reply. I was delighted to hear from you. My Dad was Hugh's first born son and his date of birth was 2nd November 1906. He was, (for his sins!) a school principal teacher in a small country village(Rathoe, in County Carlow! He was an exceptionally good teacher and was greatly respected by the local community.
The likes of his kind will not be seen again....those days teaching was a vocation, not a job. His younger brother, Michael, was in the Civil Service, in Dundalk for some years (don't know exactly when) and later in Social Welfare in Dublin. He,too, was a very loveable character and I was very fond of him RIP.

I would dearly love some photographs and my email address is:- finola.batts@Sky.com. Very many thanks.
Finola Batts (nee Durnin)

Hi there Finola,
I am sure we are related. I was speaking with Niall Durnan the other evening who is also looking for more info on Hugh (his great grand father). I assume you have been in contact?? Gerry died in 1998. He lived with Tommy and Catherine (brother and sister) in Dowdallhill. My dad then built a house on the site of the cottage and Gerry lived with us until he died in 1998 aged 90. Tommy lived in the cottage until 1967 when he died. James (your dads uncle) lived in Belfast with his first family of 5 boys but his wife died about 1916 when Gerry the youngest was about 8). The elder boys stayed in Belfast and were old enough to fend for themselves. Gerry went to live with Tommy and Kate. James came back to Dundalk and got married again and had a son (Michael my Grandfather) and 2 sisters Theresa and I think Bridget. He lived down the Pt Road until he died in 1965.

Send me your email address and I can send some photos.

Sean
Yes, I am sure we are related!! Hello!
I recollect as a child, my father James Durnin (born Belfast 1906/died 1978) talking about his Uncle Tommy and Uncle Jimmy, both lived in Dundalk (Point Road) and worked on the railways. I also remember my father talking about a visit and meeting Gerry also. This might well have been in the 1960's or 1970's.

I don't know if you know that Hugh (my grandfather) was married to a Catherine Hafferty or O'Haverty from Dundalk and I think they had a blacksmith's forge. She is buried in Mill ? cemetery in Belfast and about ten years ago all her grandchildren of which I am one, had a stone erected on her grave. I understand that Hugh went to America (but before going he asked Catherine to go with him, but she refused and remained in Belfast with her two sons, James (my fatherRIP) and Michael (my uncle RIP) Can you fill me in any further about this....did Hugh have a falling out with some of his family??

I have always been very interested in learning more about my family. I understand that Hugh went to live in USA and worked as a jouneyman fitter?? in Milwaulkie. I don't really know what happened but I think he died somewhere there in the 1950's or thereabouts.
I am trying to find the family of Bernard Durnin. He married my great grandmother's sister, Ellen Keegan in 1880 in I believe Illinois. They had one son James. Ellen remarried in the early 1900's so I am assuming (this always gets me into trouble!) that Bernard died in the 1890's sometime. James went to college, married and had a son, also called James. They lived in Iowa, USA. I have yet to find any facts on Bernard's death, but his son was born in Ohio.
I know there were other Durnins in Iowa. I will look at what I have and get back to you. There are still Durnins living in Ohio and they have family reunions each year.
Betty

Hi there,
My name is Sean Durnin and James is my Great Grandfather. He did not emigrate but stayed in Ireland first in Belfast, in Cavendish Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim (Google Irish Census 1911 and tpe in the details and you will see his first family). Unfortunately his wife died about about 1908 and some of his sons stayed in Belfast. He had moved down to Dundalk again as the GNR closed their works in Belfast and centralised everything in Dundalk as that was the centre of their Irish network. One of his sons from his first marriage lived with us in Dowdallshill until he died in 1998. James lived with his family on the Point Road and had 3-4 more kids including my Grandfather (James)who also worked in the GNR as a boilermaker. He died in 1966 (nearly 100). Hopefully you will get this note. It would be good to hear if you have any more information.

Sean Durnin

If it is the same Hugh (born in Dundalk in 1880) and worked in GNR then he would be my Great great Uncle!. According to Ireland 1901 census he was still single and living on the Racecourse Road (we subsequently built the family home on the same site). Tommy was a brother and lived there until 1968 (almost 100) when he died and he had a brother James (my Great Grandfather). His nephew (James's son from his first marriage and my grandfather half brother) lived with him until then and until 1973 when the homestead was demolished(Patrick Gerard who went by his second name Gerry). He worked also at GNR. We built are family home there and Gerry lived with us until he died in 1998.

My great grandfather James (Gerry's dad)worked as a boilermaker in Belfast before coming back to Dundalk when GNR centralised the works here and settled on the Point Road. He would be Hugh's brother. He died in 1967 nearly 100. My grandfather James also worked in GNR and lived in the same house dying in 1975 aged 53. My granny who is 90 in May still lives there. My Dad (also James) still lives in the same plot on Dowdallshill and thats where I grew up.

Hugh had 11 siblings of which 10 survived to adulthood. I know a few stayed in ireland but a lot went to the US. The only siblings that remained in Ireland would be Tommy, James, and sister Catherine (named after her mother and I think stayed in Dowdallshill until she died). We have some photos of Americans who came over to see my grandfather and great uncle in 1973 but I don't know which line they came from. Maybe you can help.

Regards,
Sean Durnin

Hello MIchael. I think i may have just called you with regards to a message on another genealogy site.

Anyway, i have recently been contacted by Carole Coutts, i believe this may be your sister in law.

I have a little more info than you seem to have and have offered to send a gedcom file on my durnin side.

James and Mary ann are extremely hard to trace. I have no knowledge of the ship that they arrived here on, nor do i know if they married here or in irelandor somewhere else. As the first born was born at sea (James b 1863 according to death certificate) i do not know where to look for their marriage. Any way hope to talk to you.

Cheers
Hayley

For those of you seeking information on the Durnin Family, it is a name which is regularly spelt wrong. If searches don't come up with what you are looking for, try Durnan, Dornan, Durning and Durnun.Due to literacy in earlier years and also to the broad Irish tongue, names are not what they seem. Many of the Irish immigrants changed the spelling of their names too.

I am looking for information on Bridget Durnin, born February 1848 in County Louth, Ireland. According to her obituary she immigrated to America as a young child then lived in Philadelphia, Wisconsin and finally Iowa. She married Patrick Quigley in Iowa in 1877. They had three children: Thomas F., Elizabeth, Mary and Winifred. Bridget died in 1902 in Sioux County, Iowa. I also know that she had a sister whom I only know as Mrs. D. Harrington of Edgerton, Wisconsin. Any information on this line is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to gather information on Bernard and Ellen Durnin. They are listed in the 1880 US census as living in Wheatland Co. Illinois. After that they seem to disappear. I believe Bernard was born about 1860 in Ireland. Ellen Keegan Durnin was born in Dundee Scotland. The Keegans lived in Putnam Co. Illinois.

Also,
There is a Bridget McCourt Finnegan b. 1828 d. 23 Aug. 1895 buried in the St. Francis Cem. in Putnam Co. Illinois. She was married to a Thomas Finnegan b. 1828 d. 6 Sept. 1878. He was a native of Co. Louth.

There is also a Julia Durnin Finnegan b. 1818 d. 3 Sept. 1881 buried in the same cemetery. Her husband was Thomas Finnegan.

There is also a James Durnin b. 1845 d. 25 April, 1870 buried there. On his headstone it said he was a native of Reastown, Louth.

Hi Joe,
The older O'Hare's in the family led me on a wild Goose chase as to where they came from. I have narrowed it down to a few possibilities, Dundalk, Co. Leitrim or possibly Leitrim town in County Down. Our Denis O'hare is isted as deceased on his son Parrick's marriage record of 1870. His wife was Catherine Connor. I may be chasing straws but the name Denis is not terribly common. By the way, the Durnin family name was present in St. Anicet, Quebec in the 1840's onward. Thank yopu for the reply.
Neil

Hi Neil,
Catherine was born c.1842 - She was the 2nd wife of Patrick Durnin. They were married April 17, 1969 in St Patricks (Dundalk). One of the witnesses at the marriage was a Bridget O'hare (maybe a sister?) Her father was listed as Denis but I could never find her mother's name.

Catherine died May 11, 1893 in Dundalk. Patrick Durnin & Catherine O'hare had 8 children. All but 1 of eventually came to USA.
Were your O'Hares from Dundalk??
Joe

My connection to the DURNIN family is found in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. My 4th-gr-grandfather, Michael KELLY, b. bef 1770 married Elizabeth "Betty" DURNIN, b. bef 1770 (where in Ireland is unknown -- maybe Northern Ireland). They had five children: My direct line ancestor was the eldest child, Alexander KELLY, b. abt. Feb, 1784 in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. He died in Bristol, Gloustershire, England, on June 1, 1829. He left Ireland about 1820 to become a merchant in Trinidad, The West Indies (returning from time to time). He also sub-let a property in downtown Drogheda before leaving for The West Indies. His spouse was Agnes COUGHLAN (I think the last name is correct). She was b. abt 1790 in Ireland, m. bef. 1820 in Ireland, and d. aft 1829, probably in Dublin, Ireland. I have most of this family's genealogy ompleted. Alexander KELLY's siblings were: Bridget KELLY, b. Jan. 1787, Aloysius KELLY, b. Apr 1789, Michael KELLY, b. Oct 1791. These three children were born in Drogheda, Co Louth. The youngest child, Arthur KELLY, was b. April, 1794, but I not been able to verify where. I am interested in making a connection with this DURNIN family.

I don't know if this will help. My family have connections in Dundalk in County Louth. My grandather was Hugh Durnin, and I understand that he was born in Dundalk in County Louth in 1880. He worked as a journey-man fitter in the railways in Dundalk. He emigrated, we think, to USA, from Liverpool in or around 1922. He worked we think in or around Milwaulkee, Wisconsin and is reported to have died there in or around 1953.

Dundalk is a small place and I feel it would be unlikely not to be connected. If you can help me with any information from your side then I would be grateful.

Fionnuala Batts (nee Durnin)

Hugh Durnin, born 1880 in Dundalk, Co. Louth, married Catherine Haverty, O'Haverty, or more likely HAFFERTY in Belfast or Dundalk in 1906 or thereabouts. He worked as a Journeyman Fitter for the GNR (railways) in Dundalk, had two brothes who were Tommy and possibly Jimmy (or Jimmy may have been a nephew)also worked for the GNR Dundalk. Family connections to the Point Road in Dundalk. Also Catherine Haverty or Hafferty's family had a connection to blacksmiths in Dundalk about the same time. Hugh Durnin emigrated to USA (Milwalkee, Wisconsis) and died in USA in or around 1953. News of his death was given to family member in Dundalk around that time.

Please reply to this if someone can help me further.
Fionnuala Batts (nee DURNIN)

Hugh Durnin born 1880 in Dundalk or environs, married Catherine Haverty in Dundalk or Belfast in 1906. Catherine Haverty is or may be given as HAFFERTY in error.

It is just possible he had connections to Teeside and possibly Stockton - on -Tees.
Finding Birth Parents

It's going to sound like I'm asking for the impossible, but I believe in miracles. My gradfather Joseph John Kearney was born (1850 +/- 10yrs) and later adopted in New York City. His birth parents (Durnin)came from Ireland (don't know location). He was adopted by Mr. Kearney from Scranton, PA. as was another young man named Harry. I know nothing of Mr. Kearney's wife. Later Kearney moved his family to rural Missouri, where he was referred to as a "gentleman farmer." My grandfather was living in St. Louis when he completed his WWI draft registration and listed no relatives on the form. He was killed when my mother was very young, and my grandmother never spoke of him.

Perhaps someone out there has a family tree that intersects mine and can fill in my blanks. I would be most appreciative.

Dear Peggy,
I just saw your message about the Durnin Family. Philip Durnin and Theodora Boyens were my great-grandparents too! My mother, Beverly and her Brother, Edwin Philip, were the children of Edwin Durnin, the brother of Romanie Durnin. My mother only had one child, me. And my Uncle Edwin had 2 boys--Edwin Philip and Edwin Eugene, both still alive. My mother would often talk of her cousin, Romanie, as they had become good friends during high school. Is he your father?

My E-mail address is lauraj504@yahoo.com.
on Bridgets death records it lists her parents as Mary and John. I know she had a brother Thomas as I have a letter he wrote to her in 1902. He was living with his wife and children at the time in Dunleer. I feel there is some connection but for some reason I am missing it. I have made contact with a person that is a decentant of Thomas's but thier records show a real large difference in the birth of my Bridget. I am not sure if she lied about her age to marry or married very young or just what happened if you can help me unravel this I would very much appreciate it.

Hi Janie, I know the following. Does any of this make sense or fit in with what you have
Mary, Bridget and Thomas Durnin were born in 1862, 1869 and 1872 respectively. Their parents were James and Catherine (nee McCourt) and they lived in an area just North of Dundalk, County Louth known as Dowdallshill. There were eleven children in that family.

Let me know if this ties in anywhere with your information

Niall
Thomas Durnan / Durnin m. Ann McPhilips in 1880 Edergole Co Monaghan

I posted this message a couple of days ago, apologies for reposting. I've just realised that by not leaving a space between the stroke(/) of the Durnan & Durnin surname in the subject heading this posting won't come up in searches.

Thomas's family info:

Parents: Patrick b. 1770s m. Catherine Kelly. Patrick Durneen listed in Edergole 1830 Tithe Applotment book leasing land. Known children:

1. Philip, bachelor, 1798-1889, farmer in Edergole.
2. John b.1805 m. Mary Martin 1809-1882. Moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland. Have descendants.
3. Catherine, spinster, 1806-1876, lived with Thomas.
4. Mary 1821-1888 m. James Tully 1821-1889 in 1853 in Parish of Ematris. James's parents John and Mary (McIntyre). Moved to Lanarkshire. Have descendants.
5. Thomas 1822-1914 m. Anne McPhilips b. 1851c in St Mary's Coravaccan. Thomas was a farmer in Edergole. Anne's father was Edward, also a farmer, from Kilnaharvey (?). Had at least one son, Patrick, b. 1886c.
6. A Patrick Dorrington m. Mary Harrison in 1850 in East Kilbride, Scotland. I believe this is also a brother. The family used Dorrington in Scotland (John and Mary)

The surname Durnan/Durnin is fairly rare in Co Monaghan. Does anyone recogsine this family. Many thanks.

Monica Leslie

Judy,
I know we are connected. I would like to know if you have any information on the Durnin family while they were still in Ireland. Such as a marriage date and place for Thomas and Mary or if you have found anything about Thomas's parents
If you do please let me know.

Thank you Janie
I am a decendant of Thomas Durnin , I am a great grand daughter of his sister Bridget who moved to America and married a Cook. They had a saloon and candy store in Cinncinatti Ohio.
