Correct. Derrer is one of the oldest clans in Switzerland, recorded in historical documents dated 1272. I have traced my forefathers back to the 1820s, my grandfather's grandfather. I'm about to start documenting the line, having just finished my husband's tree back to their arrival in Canada in 1664 and France to the 1500s.
Good luck with your search. I've found Ancestry invaluable!!!

Hi, Nancy,

I assume, then, that you are not related to this (our) line. Is that correct? For us, "Derrer" is just one of many spelling variations of the name.

Bill

I just stumbled onto this. Did you know the late-Tommy Durrer of Ruckersville? He was my great uncle. He traced our family back to Levi Durrer as well. Much of my family is still in that area.
Hi Bill

I have been reading your posts on this board and on GenForum...

I am working on a my son-in-law's ancestry so that I will be able to assist my grandson in working on his merit badge in genealogy.

I am not able to go to Rockingham for a while, and wondered if, since you have been researching this name so completely, would know the parents of Frank Durrer/Derrer (whatever) who married Dora Hosler/Hossler/Hasler about 1904. He was born in/around Keezletown, Rockingham about 1879.

Dora was the daughter of Frank Hossler in Rockingham.

Thanks for any assistance.

I am in Fluvanna, be glad to help you with any assistance here.

Alice

Do you have a copy of Levy Durrers birth in Germany? Also are his parents Peter and Maria Doerrie? On the Brunswick soldier, they have a George Doerie listed next to Levin Doerrie and I thought he could also be his father. Maybe his name is George Peter or something like that?
Mary

Hi:

I've been trying to figure out the entire family, too-my mother was Mary Rowena Durrer LaChaussee, daughter of William Haywood and Elizabeth Durrer-he was related to Mack Durrer-I have a copy of Maxine's family tree (such as it was) from when she did her genealogy research.
I would be happy to correspond with you about this, send you a copy of it, if you do not have it. There are lots of holes in it, and my sister recently told me of the changed name of "levi" Durrer and his orgins.
Please let me know if you are interested in corresponding. I look forward to hearing from you.

(PS-I'm kinda disappointed that we're not related to the famous one-but he didn't have any surviving children, either!)

Sincerely

Mary Hilton

I am descended from George Durrer and Catherine Wetzel thru their son John Christopher Durrer b. 1834 d. 1911. John Christopher Durrer's son, John Sinclair Durrer b. 1875 d.1967 was my grandfather. I have a compilation evidently done years ago that begins with Levi Durrer born in Scotland about 1750. I understand this is in error. I would appreciate any information about this family.

I am a descendant of George Durrer father of Eliza A. Durrer who married James B. Dickerson. A great-aunt compiled a genealogy mostly about the Durrers, but also some about the Dickersons. She gave a copy to my mother, (Eliza was her grandmother), and she gave a copy to me.

In this paper she stated that the first generation she knew of was Levi Durrer, born in Scotland about 1750, who married Annie Wye who was born in Ireland of Irish parents. It goes on from there. I don't know where she got her information, but I was very interested in seeing your information.

Todd,

Do you know your grandfather's name? I don't have John Fletcher Durrer in my database, but might have his father.

Given the Durrer name, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you're one of the Durrers discussed in this message board, which means, we're related, too--a lot of different spellings of this family name, including Derry, Derey, Derror, Derrer, and a few others over the last two centuries.

Bill Derrow

P.S. I, for one, don't believe our family came from Scotland. In fact, I'm pretty sure of it. I believe we all descend from a Brunswick soldier, Levin Doerge, who fought for the British during the American Revolutionary War. He is then found as Johann Levien Doerrie(s), born in Arholzen, Braunschweig, Germany, 17 Oct 1749, to Peter Doerries and Anna Margaretha Fischer.

Greene County Durrers--Desc. of Johann Levien "Levy" Doerrie(s)

Much of the information I have in my Derey/Derrer/Derror/Derrow/Derry/Durrer database on the Durrers comes from two sources: the unpublished family history put together by William Durrer in, I believe, the 1970s, and the work of Maxine Harlowe, published in the Greene County Magazine. I would like very much to validate some of the information I have with those on the list who are directly related to the various families that make up the descendants of George Durrer and Catherine Wetzel.

I have corresponded with some of you in the past (Tracey Rothgeb, Jamie Wood), but I don't believe I've traded information with Ellen Bailey and Nancy Johnson. I would very much like to compare notes with you.

BTW, I am a descendant of George's brother, Peter Derrow. I'm the one, I believe, that carried our family back to Arholzen, Braunschweig, Germany, where Johann Levien "Levy" (not Levi) Doerries was born to Peter and Maria Doerries. We are not related to Albrecht Durer to my knowledge, as much as I would like us to be.

I look forward to hearing from my Durrer cousins so that my information can be as accurate as possible. I hope to publish the family history/genealogy in the not too distant future, and hope to have a well "sourced" book when I do.

Bill Derrow
(Leonard William Derrow, Jr.)
Washington, DC
lwderrow@erols.com
lwderrow@comcast.net

I read your messages and in fact I have Durrers in my tree. I have Julia Frances Durrer born somewhere between 1835 - 1845 in Greene County . She is the daughter of John and Julia Ann Durrer. She married Lilburn Vander Thomas 6/12/1873 in Greene County, Va. I also have the daughter of the above two also named Julia middle initial E. that married Charles Durrer. This Julia was born abt. 1880 so I assume that Charles was born around that time also. Julia and Charles had two children, Robert (ABT 1912) and Mae (abt. 1906) The dates are not exact but I don't have much to go on with the latter Julia, SORRY!!! Any hint of help that you can lend, Iwould appreciate. Let me know!!! Thanks Tracey

Hi, I was looking for information about my family and found this message board. I am related to you all. Carroll and Nana were my grandparents and their son Carroll is my father. I don't have any contact with him because he abandoned us when we were small but I was very close to my Nana until she died several years ago. I currently live in Powhatan, about 40 miles outside of Richmond. I have a family tree of sorts that Nana wrote down for me which might help tie all of this information together. Please contact me and let me know what you have. I do know that Nana traced the tree all the back to Germany and Albrecht Durer the artist but I don't have all of that information. I am very excited about all of this.
Thanks

Got your message- just moved so will take a while to dig up my paperwork. The names you listed don't look familiar - I have names going back to the 1700's starting w/ Levi Durrer from Scotland and coming down to near the present - most in Greene county Va. My mother - born in Ruckersville (near Richmond) in 1903...Keep in touch--Ellen

What I rec'd through a friend went back to Scotland about 1750 - and a bit of sketchy German info..even possibly Albrect Durer.
If you want direct e-mail might be easier..although I wouldn't know re. you except for this link. Happy New Year..Then I will fill in a bit re. myself.

Sec.
Lutie worked for the Post Office dept in DC had sons Jack Donald - both deceased. I'm wondering if Carroll was mom's favorite bro. Buddy. Was carroll married to Nana- I know she lived in Richmond- this is a busy time for me - visiting son's 1 in mid MI
near the lake of same name, other outside Aspen CO. Look forward to sharing stuff, as I have a list going back to LEVI DURRER who came from Scotland in the 1700's - then some other re. Germany.

The Durrers

Ellen,
This is exciting. This makes us cousins. Let me know your e-mail address so that we can correspond. The farm you visited in Virginia was probably Aunt Minta's. She lived just outside of the DC area in what used to be a rural area. She married the brother of my grandfather Poole. Uncle Carroll and his wife also lived in the area. I remember his saying when I was small that I looked like Loutie?, but he hoped that I didn't have her disposition. If I can remeber, Thelm was a nurse? My grandparents moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where my grandfather worked for the railroad. My mother lives in Kentucky. Do you have pictures? Tell me more about Thema.
Nancy

Thelma Durrer

Dear Nancy - how exciting - you are right. It was Lutie tho" actually Thelma was youngest of 13 of Charlie Adeline's children. I think as a very small child (b.1930-probably 33-36) I think we visited Grace's farm (or it could have been Minta's). I remember (a city child) having to drink water from a ladle from a bucket on the porch...Very strange at the time.
I grew up in DC and after marriage moved to Michigan where I've been ever since. Thanks for your answer would love to hear more...PS - just turned 70. Ellen Bailey

I may be able to help. I believe the Thelma you refer to was my great aunt. My grandmother was Grace Durrer Poole born in Ruckersville. A large family. The girls as I recall were Gracie, Thelma, Lootie? Sootie? Minta and a son named Carroll. Sorry I can't recall more. My greatgrandmother was named Americus and my mother has told me of her visits to their farm when she was young. I even visited the old family gravesites about 25 years ago. Reply if you want or need further info. I can try to dig out some geneaolgy that I have.
