My family came from Pa and Ohio, and originally from Germany via Hessian soldier who refused to return to Germany at conclusion of war. I do have some old family history which I would share...we may be related. Although my grandfather's family all moved west to Illinois and further, to California. Just found your msg from 2000, when killing time tonite on the computer.

You can view her on John Creele's Public Member Tree (the tree creator, Dan Creel, is my father). She died c1908 and might be buried in Dugger Cemetery, Brookport, Massac Co., IL next to her mother and father who died in 1904 and 1906, respectively.

I'm looking for info on who her parents were, she arrived in 1866 NY on the Teutonia from Hamberg, Germany. She was 32 yrs. old. She was the second wife of John Christian Flessa (Johann Christian Flessa) from Bayern/Bavaria Germany, he came to the US sometime earlier 1800's I'd have to go back and look to remember when. There was a 29 yr old Jost Durst that arrived on the same ship also born in Switz. I can only assume they were siblings. I would sure appreciate info, I'm finding it harder to track the swiss and germans who arrived in the 1800's harder to track down their parents than ones I had here before the mayflower....

Thanks,
Rob Davis

To all those with Casper Durst as their ancestor. After about 6 years of compiling, checking records, etc. the Rev.War marker for Casper Durst is being sent by the government who accepted my information as correct documents. The Durst Reunion is on the first Sat. in August at Salisbury, Pa. where the cemetery is located. I am making arrangements via Newman Funeral Home and a monument company to
have the marker placed in the Old Hill ( Union) Cemetery in Salisbury.
obit for Rolly Durst, born 1869 Iowa, died 1948 Kansas

Delphos Republican, Ottawa County, Kansas, April 8, 1948, page 1:
Rolly LeRoy Durst, the oldest child of Mark and Melissa Durst was born near Richmond, Washington County, Iowa, October 31, 1869 and died March 29, 1948 in Delphos, Kansas.
He came to this part of Kansas in the spring of 1884 when his father and mother, with their family of five children moved in a covered wagon from their home in Iowa to a new home in Kansas.
They lived for some time in the Bethel neighborhood north of Delphos where Rolly attended school at Bethel. Later he went to Bernard when his parents moved in that district.
May 12, 1896 he was united in marriage to Louisa May Copping. They began housekeeping on the Keeler farm northeast of Delphos. In March 1898 they moved to the farm in Lakeview where they made their home for fifty years and where their children were reared.
They were still living in their home when they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary, May 12, 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Four daughters, Mrs. Ethel E. Johnsten, Peabody, Kansas; Mrs. Dora Ablard, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Vesta Smith and Mrs. Lillian Hurtig, both of Delphos. One daughter, Violet, died in infancy. Besides his wife and daughters, four sons-in-law, nine grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Dean of Delphos and Mrs. Ora Abbott of Glendale, Calif., and other relatives and many friends mourn his departure.
He united with the Methodist Church in Delphos while he was still a young man and he was consistent in his Christian belief getting much comfort from it as he grew older and his health failed. He was interested and active in community affairs as long as he was able and his chief pleasure was to be with his family and to have them with him. He especially loved children and his grandchildren, from babyhood to young man and womanhood, then later the two little great-grandchildren were a source of joy to him.
Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon, April 1, with Rev. H.G. Feldmann officiating clergyman. Music was furnished by Mrs. Lael Gilbert, Mrs. Mary Worrel, Mrs. H.F. Summers and Mrs. M.P. Ballard accompanied by Alva S. Adams. Rev. Feldmann also sang a solo. Pallbearers were grandsons, William Hurtig, Ivan Smith, James Shirley, James Kelly, Armon Hurtig and Thomas Johnsten. Interment was in the Delphos cemetery.

I found a photo with three children, 7 - 12. The photo was taken at a studio in Philadelphia, Pa. On the back is written John, Ida, Emma Durst. I found a family in 1900 Philadelphia. The father was John wd 47, John son 15, Ida 13, Emma 11. This is the family that matched, but it is still a guess. If you think this is your family, please let me know and I will send a scan.

Mel Dove

Thanks for the interest but my Durst & Shaffer names do not fit into your family. As far as I know the Johannes Durst, Hessian soldier is not connected to the Casper Durst, Rev.War Soldier who is my ancestor. The Shaffer name is from the David Shaffer of York Co.P.a into Somerset Co., Pa.where he remained and died, I have his entire branches of that tree.

My Father's name was Stanley M. Durst, born in 1901, died 1982. He also used "Stan" as his ham radio handle. We descended from a Hessian soldier, Johann Zackarias Durst. Family settled in Ohio, coming to Illinois in early 1900's. I have not found a connection to the Dursts in Texas. I am no a genealogist, just interested.

Hello, The post of pdurstshaffer caught my eye. I am not a genealogist, but have followed the Durst name as that is my maiden name, descended from Johann Zackarias Durst, a Hessian soldier. My Durst family came to Illinois from Ohio and per family history did not go to Texas. My Mother's maiden name was Shaffer, her father was Arthur Garfield Shaffer married to Grace Jane Brooks. I have no further history on my Mother's family. The combination of the DurstShaffer names interests me.

Hi, I have your message re Dursts in Texas. My branch of the family came to Illinois from Ohio in early 1900's. Some Dursts from my Ohio ancestors did live and settle in Santa Cruz, Ca. (a cousin to my father, John A. Durst. John A. Durst had family, a son Durst who lived in Berkely or Richmond. He had daughters, one whose married name was Hocum). I have no knowledge of the Dursts in Texas.

Thanks for the message, Nancy

Casper Durst marker

To those who are wondering if the marker was placed on "Old Casper" Durst's burial place. It has not been done, mostly because of the concern of having verified/documented data. The Durst Reunion ( which is open and welcome for everyone of every branch of the tree) was held Aug.1,2009 and a decision was made to send to the veterans for a marker to be placed. I will be taking care of that as quickly as I can and checking with the local Newman Funeral Home to have it delivered there. I think it must be done now or it never will be. We know that several references are made in historical data that Casper was buried in the Old Hill Cemetery in Salisbury, Pa. and there is a field stone there with CXD 1839 , that is as close to being certain as we can be. I welcome any suggestions, etc. information, and will keep the Durst Board alerted to the process.
Re: Durst Ancestors

I am joining the Durst conversation on the Durst from Texas and others.
I am a descendant of Casper Durst of York Co., Pa. born ca. 1740, into Somerset Co. Pa. and Garrett Co., Md. believed to be the son of a Casper ( Kasper Hans Durst) of Heidleberg Twp.
York Co. who died there about 1761.

Does any of your Durst research connect with the above? We just had a Durst Reunion and some of the guys said they had been to Texas to visit the Alamo and there is a Durst buried there, or fought there?? I can not connect him with any of my research. Any clues or theories will help. Thanks a bunch.

Henry Durst, Sr. & Barbara Garlitz

Margaret Durst (1791-), wife of William Wiland is my 4th Great Grandmother. Her parents were Henry Durst, Sr. (1769-1840) and Barbara Garlitz (1762-). Henry's Father was Casper Durst (1732-) and his mother Anna Elizabeth Lightfoot. Does anyone know where any of them are buried. My 86 year old Mother, Wilma Evans Markley, who lives in Atlanta would like to visit their gravesites as she has never done it. I am taking her in September so I need to locate the cemeteries. Please HELP if you can. Thanks.
Lynn Gorski

Dr Daniel Peter Durst is my husbands Great Grandfather. He was born in Potter, Centre, PA in 1830, and died in 1911 in Wheatland,California. Dr. Daniel Peter Durst graduated from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and the lure of gold in California beckoned. To go west he served as a ship's doctor, sailing via Cape Horn and arriving in San Francisco in 1853. He moved to Wheatland in 1867 and purchased 35 acres of land. This grew into the Durst Bros. Ranch operated by two of his sons. It became one of the biggest Hop ranches. Daniel Peter Durst married Rosaline F Haines on 12/26/1858. They had four sons, Murray, Ralph, Jonathon and John.
