Wow, quite a lot of information you were able to help me with! Thanks! I am glad you helped me clear up the difference between Mathias and Matheus. As I'm sure you are aware, census records are notorious for having misspellings, and this would be a prime example.

My grandmother is Loretta, she married a McGovern and had 3 children, one of which is my mother.

My name is Amy. I grew up in the Columbus area, but I currently live in Cincinnati with my husband. I would be happy to communicate more via email, and I can be reached at froneamy at gmail.com.

Thanks again, and it is very nice getting in contact with you, Jim!

Hi Amy,

Glad to be of help. I can certainly understand the Matheus/Mathias confusion. My mom had them conflated for the longest time until two summers ago, when she and I took a trip to Steubenville, Jefferson Co and dug up a bunch of records and spoke with some of the Dury descendants in the area. It was as if a dam broke once we realized that the two names were separate people and not just variant spellings.

Anyway, like I said, my mom has a lot of info on the Dury line which I will be glad to send you. Don't be alarmed, however, if you don't hear from us for a while. I am a teacher here in Columbus and have 34 French exchange students in town for two weeks. I won't be doing any geneaology for a couple of weeks. My mom on the other hand might be glad to chat with you. Note, however, that she is 86 years old and having difficulty maneuvering on the computer. So, that may be hit or miss.

You should be able to help mom with the descendents of Fredericka Dury. Her info is a bit sparse on that line (it being a lateral for us, of course). However, you might be interested in hearing that another teacher at my school also happens to be a descendent of Fredericka. His name is Tony Carfagna. His mother was a Guth. Loretta Meinert Guth was his great-grandmother as well. That would make him your third cousin if my figuring is right. Do you know of him? I've been trying to get him and his mother to give me more detailed info on the Guth line but you know how that goes. I'll tell him we've e-mailed.

Good to chat with you. Hold the ship and I'll be back in touch eventually. In the meantime, you can try to e-mail my mom at gagadury@dury.ws. My e-mail BTW is jldury@yahoo.com

Jim Dury

Hi, This is Agnes' son, Jim. My mother has quite a bit of information on the Dury line which we will be glad to share with you. It will be a few weeks before I can get to that, however,

In the meantime, if you are Loretta Meinert's great-grandaughter, you are indeed in the Dury line. As you know, Loretta's mother, Fredericka Dury, was the daughter of John Nepomucene Dury. John had two wives, Josephine Wolf and Catherine Shaffer (Shaefer, Schaefer, et al.). By Josephine he had four children; Margaret Crescentia, Mary Amalia, Mathilda and Franz Josef. Josephine died Dec 1863 at age 29 yrs, 7 mos. Cause of death unknown to us. John married Catherine 13 June 1865. He had 6 children by her: Catherine Theresa, Fredericka (born 18 Apr 1868 or 11 Dec 1869), Anton, John Blaise, Albert Mathias, Gustav Adolf. John died of tongue cancer (probably from tobacco) before Gustav was born. My mother, Agnes Strapp, married Gustav's youngest son, Frank. Hence, Gus was my grandfather.

Our records show that John Nepomucene Dury was not the son of Mathias Dury. He was the son of Matheus Dury and Crescentia Woehrle. Note the difference in names: Matheus (Matthew) and Mathias (Mathias) similar in English but actually pronounced quite differently in the native German. Mathias married Mary Ann Gangloff. Matheus and Mathias were brothers. They were two of the eight children of Balthazar (Baldus, Beldus) Dury (wife's name not ascertained - perhaps Katherine Hummel). Baldus' 8 children were: Maria, Matheus, Martin, Roman, Marcus, Joseph, Mathias, Rosina (Rosine). All of the children were born in Baden (Germany). The seven youngest emmigrated to Jefferson County, Ohio where they farmed land on the western edge of the county. Some of the brothers left the area but there are quite a few descendants still in the area. All of these descendants are from female Dury's and hence there are no descendants in the area bearing the Dury name. One descendant, Joseph Dury, lives in Sewickely, Penn, a suburb of Pittsburgh. He also had a son.

Back to your direct line. Fredericka was my grandfather's sister. She married Fred Meinert. Their daughter was Loretta (I assume you know all this already). Loretta married Joseph Guth. They had 6 children: Joseph, George, Henry, Loretta, Paul, Thomas, Mary. From which one are you descended?

As I said, my mother will be able to give you quite a bit more in future. Until then, what is your name and where are you located? Are you in the Columbus area?

Best,

Jim Dury

I am wondering if you have any more information or clarification about the Durys. John N Dury was my great grandmother's (Loretta Meinert) maternal grandfather, and I believe Matthias Dury was John's father. Matthias and Crescentia are as far back as I can find using ancestry's records. I can certainly give you plenty of information about John's descendants in the Columbus, OH area. Thanks!

froneamy at gmail.com

I would be very interested in seeing some of these documents that show these facets because they don't seem to agree with the ones I have for this same family.

The marriage certificate I have for Theophile from August 20, 1883 shows him at 23 years old which would place his birth at 1860. I have found quite a few instances on the older federal census reports where birth years did not agree with other documents.

I stated earlier that Theophile, b:1884, must have changed his name because on the birth certificate I have it shows Joseph Eusebe Dore, born on march 6, 1884,
father- Theophile Dore
mother- Marguerite Hery

This was recorded on June 30, 1884, in Russel County, Quebec.

I have talked with Michael but he hasn't sent me anything as of yet.

Theophile is not Joseph Eusebe. Theo was born in April of 1864(?), you'll have to read the info posted. He was born in Embrun, Ontario, the family settling Embrun as pioneers, with a group of Québecois Catholics asked to relocate to Ontario. I have Theophile's birth registration, confirmation and marriage certificates, as well as his death certificate, on which is stated he was born in the US, Wisconsin or Minn. I don't have access to my records, as they are still packed, since I have recently moved.
Marguerite's family name is Duplanty d'Heri. They arrived originally at Port Royale. Her mother was a Trudeau.Tell me again how you are related? Do you know of Michael Dory of Ohio?

One interesting thing I found while going through Canadian records is that somewhere along the way Theophile (b:1884), changes his name. According to his birth certificate his given name was Joseph Eusebe Dore, (b:3-6-1884. Another thing is that Margrett's maiden name was Hery, and she married Theophile (b:1860) on 8-20-1883.

Hi Lori---  Regarding your query on RootsWeb, I am sure that we have a match!   I am a Dury by marriage - my husband, Frank,  was a grandson to John Nepomucene.  John was born May 1, 1831 in Braunlingen, Villingen, Baden to Matthias Dury and Crescentia Woerhle.  He settled  in Columbus, Oh and died Aug 19, 1877 just three days before the birth of his youngest child, Gustave Adolph, was born on Aug 22, 1877.       This past summer, on a research trip to  Steubenville, Jefferson Co., Oh,  I was fortunate to find a great deal of info on the Dury Family, back in time to its progenitor,  Balthasar (Baldus) Dury.  At this point I am not having luck.  He was probably born sometime before 1774-6 and died after 1819,  the date of birth of his last child.  He married Katherine Hummel about 1799-1800. The birth of their first child is 1801.          Lori I hope that you will find this bit of info helpful and I would be happy to hear from you.                 Agnes Dury, Worthington, Oh ( a suburgh of Columbus}
