Awarded: Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device Date action: 9 Febrary 1968
Theatre: Republic of Vietnam
Reason: For heroism in connction with military operations agains a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Duryea distin- guished himself while serving as a Rifleman with the Company A, 1st Bat-talion, 14th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division.
On 9 February 1968, Company A was on a search and destroy mission south of Da Mang. A sister company was engaged in a battlewith an unknown-sdize enemy force and Company A was moving to its assistance when it came under auto- matic weapons and sniper fire. The enemy fire grew so intense that it became evident that the company could not advance. Immediately, Private First Class Duryea exposed himself as he rose to his feet and began an assault on the enemy positions, distracting the enemy and fallowing his comrades to renew their attack. He was moving forward when he was mortally wounded by sniper fire. His courage, determina- tion and self-sacrificing devotion to duty materially aided his com-pany in routing the enemy and are in keeping with the highest tradi-tions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Company A, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division was again reorganized and redesignated on 26 August 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry. Serving in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division, 1-14th Infantry participated in 13 campaigns: Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase II, Counteroffensive Phase III, Tet Counteroffensive, Counteroffensive Phase IV, Counteroffensive Phase V, Counteroffensive Phase VI, Tet 69/Counteroffensive, Summer-Fall 1969, Winter-Spring 1970, Sanctuary Counteroffensive, and Counteroffensive Phase VII.
The Battalion was relieved on 15 December 1970 from assignment to the 4th Infantry Division and assigned to the 25th Infantry Division.
