I just got more Remsen information from relatives. But not the connection to Daniel. These are old files. Can we please talk offline. Abraham and Maretje Remsen 1730 and 1732
stashapalmer@gmail.com

I am leaving Friday, and might be hard to get in touch. It will be a shame to know that you have some Losee that might potentially help me since that is the primary reason I am going to NY. I hope we can get in touch. One way or another I will solve this land info and find the connection, just wish it wasnt so hard and expensive!
xo

I would love to get info before I leave for NY on Friday. Anything else would be helpful. I have contacted our Williamsons and McCouns and they say that they are stumped as well, that we have other Remsen in our mutual lines. So, Remsen -- yes -- we have about 20 of them going way back. They tie into the Bedells - McCoun and VanDine lines somehow; and I will try to link them. We also have some more Duryea, will get a list going when I hear from you all.

This is one of the documents about the land that does not makes sense to me. It has the Thomas Pool family estate noted and Eliza Pool and Margaretta Remsen. There were also lawsuits over water rights and trains.
Wondering if any of you know anything about this? I can send a bit more.

Lauren and Bill:

My family is the Stephen Losee (B: 1794) and Hannah Powell family from Hempstead, Long Island. I have his brothers, and all of his children accounted for, its taken me a very long time to get to this point. I cracked the case last week (after a 12 year search). I have thorough documentation from the usual sources, including land records and surrogates court. I have not posted much of my documentation on the web because I can see what happens...

I have asked our dear friend Alan for help over the last 6 years and sent him anything that I find on Duryea. I plan to continue doing that as I make my way into NY and Hempstead next week for the first time in my life. My express goal is to get the remaining information in the surrogates court and the transfer of lands information between the Taylor, Dubois, Van Dusen... and more. Alan has taught me to be very precise and specific, no hunches in my work.
I really would like to connect the other Losee in Hempstead and Brooklyn to my Losee line, I have a lot of other Losee research, it just needs to be connected now.
My Van Dusen family is directly linked to the great Van Deursen book...

I know our family is related to Remsen, through Margaret Remsen who married into the Losee family. However, it is all still fuzzy, which is why I sent you the documentation. That land was fought over for well over 20 years through the Poole family and Remsen family. And it eventually ended up in mine. That paper trail has been very helpful in connecting the dots. The sad thing is that the land continues to be an issue in the Losee family as well. Finally it was all sold off in 1891.
Please help me with information. I will not be able to get back to NY for a long time, and really need some more details to makes sure I am leaving no stone unturned. I will also supply you with anything you need.
Thanks so much,
Anastasia (stashapalmer)

Hi I am looking for information on Maria/e Polly Duryea/e married to John W Hall. They lived in Charleston, Montgomery county, NY. Specifically I am hoping to find the marriage date and information on their children. I have found rreferences to them on online family trees that list their youngest three children, but per John's will there were more. I am wondering if Marie is a second wife or if she may be mother to all his children. Any information would be appreciated.

Southworth 1840-1896; (wife - looks like Julia) M. Duryee 1844-1936; and Dora P. 1873-1884 - perhaps 1873 could be 1879. Hope this assists someone.

Richard: Glad the info was helpful. My father b. 1887 was a native of Leicester when it was called Moscow or Moscow Landing. Often I'll find family members who have left the area for Rochester or Buffalo in later years (or the Mid Western states). However many remained all their lives.

I believe that George is the father, lived in Rahway, NJ in 1870, listed as a physician with son Edward and wife Mary. Edward went on to be the lead cement maker at the Theodore Roosevelt dam in Arizonia, circa 1903-1911.

Greetings All,
I am looking for a Dr. George or Dr. Edward Duryee, who would have lived in Montezuma, NY (Cayuga Co) in 1893. Most likely they were chemists, not people doctors.
Both names are associated with a cement plant in Montezuma, and I have a newspaper article that states that Dr. Edward Duryee's father was sick in Orange, NY in 1893. Other sites might be Toledo Ohio in 1880 and Colton, California after 1900.
This is not my family. I am a town historian researching a cement plant that was built along the Erie Canal. I will be looking into deeds and other local items and would be happy to exchange data with any Duryee researchers.
Hi Richard,
Your scenario RE James Thorn and the Robbins family is a good one, and one I never would have thought of...When it comes to genealogy, I'm pretty "green," but I did do some searching at the Shampubco site, that you reccomended...I searched "wills," under Oneida county and a few other NY counties, but found no Thorns or Robbins listed that matched.--I found a James Thorn listed in Ridgeway, Orleans 1824-from Genesee 1825,-- but since this was not in Oneida county and was from an earlier period, it didn't look (to me) like there was a connection.

I recently found a James H. Thorne listed in the 1920's US Census, born in Wis., (abt.1858) living in South Dakota (in 1920).--It occured to me that this James H. could have been the son (nephew or grandson) of the James H Thorne who had purchased the acreage in Greenbay, Wis. in 1848.--(but then that would be another possible scenario).

Since my g-grandfather James was born in Bridgewater, NY, it may not be likely that he is the James, son of Leonard and Hannah Thorne. --But then I still wonder why that James (born abt.1843) appears to have left home by 1860 and never shows up in any of the many searches I've done, including *all* the US Census for the years 1860-1930.

I thought I might try to send for my g-grandfather James' birth certificate, and/or his death cetificate, but first I would need to find out the year that he died.--I'm fairly certain he died in Fresno, CA, and I know that he was still alive in 1920.--What would you advise regarding the aquiring of these vital records?

Thanks again for all your help,
Tiana

Dear Tiana,

Sorry for the delay in making an answer...

As a former resident of Fresno, California, a hot and largely uninspiring place, I can only wonder why anyone--including myself--might wander over to that place ; - )

Jokes aside, I cannot but repeat that you really must get those wills that I have suggested will resolve the issues.

Please consider accessing Sampubco.com for some sign of your ancestors' probate. I am often at odds with the "Sam" of Sampubco.com over his interpretations of the many, many wills he has gathered; still, his site is a great resource for available Surrogate presentations --meaning the originals that you will be able to interpret for yourself.

If I can help guide your further in this, please contact me privately. I do not have anything "secret" to offer, but think that we might better help one another to better define your ancestry off-List.

Yours,

Richard

Dear Jackie,

I dearly wish that I might be of more help in your research, but cannot say more than I have already said.

I would like to suggest that you seriously consider subscibing to

New-Netherland-L@rootsweb.com

or

Dutch-Colonies@rootsweb.com

(assuming you have not yet done so)

to post this same (initial) query.
Thanks so much for your response. If you have any notes at all on the Ryer family, I would love to see them. I have photos of the cemetery at Woodlawn of the Samuel Ryer Plot and also of John Bussing's Plot, father of Jane Bussing Ryer. We have traced the Bussing /Briggs (as Mrs. Bussing was a Briggs) back to the Mayflower and I am pretty sure the Bussing's go back to Arent Bussing, just don't have the actual proof.
I belong to ancestry.com and have seen some of the newspaper articles where Jane Ryer protested her father's will in 1870. The Ryer family is my brick wall. Samuel's father was John born in 1766 and died in 1850. He was married to Ellen (Eleanor,) Myers who I also have not been able to trace. I have a letter stating the family descends from Sebastian Van Kortrijk and his grandson Ryer Michelson (which is spelled several different ways) . Just having problems verifying the middle. John's father is suppost to be Hendrick Ryer, they lived at Fordham Manor before West Farms. So as I say, if you have any notes that might send me in the right direction, please contact me. Thanks Jackie Ryer Parr

Dear Jackie,

All I can tell you at this point is that Susan Ryer, born 7 July 1843, was the daughter of Samuel Ryer and Jane Bussing.

I deeply regret to say that my notes on the Ryer family are without citation and need to be 'recaptured' from among available resources.

This Duryea-Ryer couple lived in Westchester County , New York (West Farms) and I would expect that her Bussing ancestry derives from the well-known family of that area, especially Harlem.

Please consider consulting James Riker's work on the history of Harlem for possible additional information on your roots.

I will be glad to help you further, if I can, should you not be able to use that which I am providing above. This would include census records on your Elijah Ryer or other resources I might be able to access on-line.

Again, my apoplogies for not being able to be more specific on the Ryer ancestry. I would be exceedingly grateful to have the benefit of your research to better define this family group.

Yours,

Richard

Thanks Richard,
I am new at this, --it's only been a little over a month since I began searching for info about my ancesters (via Ancestry.com). I have done searches until I'm blue in the face it seems, trying to find the parents or siblings (etc.) of my g grandfather, James H Thorne (and others)...The only possible match I have been able to find, for the parents of James, is Hannah Remsen and Leonard Thorne...According to my searches, there were very few James Thornes born in, or around, 1844, and of the few I was able to find, only Leonard and Hannah Thorne were *both* born in NY.--Which matches the info about my James H Thorne (taken from the 1920s Fresno, CA, US Census)...Also I remember being told, that my grandfather had a little bit of Hollandish Dutch ancestry, on the Thorne side of his family.

My grandfather, Frank A Thorne Sr., was born in Philadelphia,PA, in 1882... I was told that both of my grandparents worked in Vaudeville from the time they were young (I'm guessing my grandfather worked with his father James).--My grandparents married in 1899 (while in their teens) and continued working in Vaudeville, traveling all over the US and Europe... According to a newspaper article,(written about my grandmother, Lizette Thorne),-- my grandparents were playing the old Levey Circuit when the show closed in Handford, and that was when they came to Fresno, CA (in abt.1906).-- They worked at the Empire Theater in Fresno for 2 years after that. My grandparents went on to make silent films in Santa Barbara, at Flying A Studios, and other studios in the Los Angeles and Hollywood area, while James Thorne remained in Fresno.

I do hope to hear from you again, --or from anyone else who may have info that could help me in my search for my Thorne ancesters.

Tiana

Dear Tiana,

While I cannot help you in the immediate, I think we might work together to discover your ancestry.

This will take time and interaction between us and this message board.

Please keep posting here as you "work" on this ancestry as I am sure we will be able to solve the question.

As you have no doubt ascertined, more than one Duryea dscendant became an actor.

I expect, given the information you have offered, that this family originated in Orange County or Dutchess County, New York.

The Thornes were old of Long Island, New York (Quakers), as were the Duryeas, and I think your families may have come together in the Orange County area. The interactions among the Remsen and Duryea families were rife and often only newly discovered in modern research. Thus, every tidbit you may be able to offer will likely advance your research.

Yours,

Richard

I have just begun to trace my Thorne ancestry...My g grandfather was James Henry Thorne, b abt. 1844 in Bridgewater (Oneida county) NY...I recently found a Leonard Thorne (in One World Tree) who could possibly be my great-grandfather,-- but I need to find out more info before I can be certain...(According to what I found in One World Tree),--Leonard Thorne married a Hannah Remsen and they had 8 children.--Their 4th child was a James Thorne, b abt.1843.--It says that James was born in NY, but it doesn't say where in NY.

My g grandfather, James H. Thorne, married Bertha Anna (Bonnie) Meyer and they had 2 sons,-- Francis (Frank) Author Thorne Sr. (my grandfather) and Mark S. Thorne (my g uncle)...My James Thorne lived in Fresno,CA during his retirement years,--he is listed in both the 1910 and 1920 US census as an actor.-- My grandparents, Frank and Lizette Thorne were both actors,--stage, and later silent films,-- my grandfather, Frank, was also a director and scenic artist.-- They all worked together in Fresno (Vaudeville) during the early 1900s...My grandfather bought his father, James, a tobacco shop in Fresno, CA, after he retired from acting.

I am hoping to find out more information about the Thorne and/ or Remsen families listed in the Duryea tree,-- I am very interested in learning more about Leonard Thorne and Hannah (Remsen) Thorne, or James Thorne's siblings.

You can email me at: twilight-mist @peoplepc.com

Tiana Sanders

Dear Amber,

Please consider writing me privately at duryeakin@yahoo.com.

Otherwise, my mccool.13@osu.edu addy is always available.

Please note that I respect the privacy issues anyone may have, but hope always that ongoing conversations remain on "the lists" so that others may benefit. Please also note that I tend to "hang out" at the GenForums, as in

www.genforum.com

One reason is that they have, so far, not been silly enough to create both a Duryee and a Duryea message board. These two spellings are so often interchangeable in the records that I fear some folks don't know to look at both, devoted to what is largely the same family, on the ancestry.com boards.

Meanwhile, please do contact me in whichever way you are most comfortable,

Richard
