Hiram Dutcher

Hiram (or Himan, Hyman) Dutcher was apparently born in Oswego County, NY, in 1846. He served in the Civil War. He had four wives, Mary Decker, Catherine Lord, Rose Welte, and Gladys Griffith. I have been unable to locate his parents although I think a man named Gilbert Dutcher might be his brother. Hiram died in May 1928 and is buried in historic Riverside Cemetery, Scriba, NY. Any information you can provide will be most appreciated.

I am a descendant of Ruluff Dutcher 1714-1805 of Salisbury CT, who m. 1738 Katrina Ferris or Reinders, and moved to northern Vermont in the late 1700s. He was a descendant of one of the infamous three brothers in NY. I have a lot of info that seems to be valid, but am going through and trying to document as many sources as I can.

I just wanted to know if there was anyone else researching this line, as I have quite a lot of information, much of it written by Luther Dutcher and handed down, and would be happy to share. And of course, anything that sheds light on some of my mysteries would be much appreciated!

Lynne
zachsmom @ iname.com

Ruluff 1714-1805 m Katrina above
Christopher 1757-1814 m Rosanna Holcomb
Daniel 1780-1819 m Nancy Billings dau Enoch Billins Rev War
Luther Loomis 1802-1878 m Almira Brainerd
Frederick 1828-1899 m Minerva Hill Huntington
Alfred Luther 1855-1905 m Maria Bowes Nelson
Frederick Nelson 1887-1976 m Millicent Sophia Barrett
Marian Huntington Dutcher 1909-1980 m James Alonzo Powers
My parents, both still living

Seneca DUTCHER (b-1805) Family

My name is Jeff Gurvine. My great grandmother is Henrietta DUTCHER, dau of John H DUTCHER b-1844 at Nunda, Livingston co, NY. His father is Seneca DUTCHER, b-abt1805 in NY and his mother is Elizabeth SPENCER. The Seneca DUTCHER family moved to Keating, McKean co, PA then to Big Island, Marion co, OH. Son John H DUTCHER and his wife Elizabeth HARMAN were married just north of Jo Daviess co, IL, then moved to Kansas settling in Junction City where they are buried. I am seeking the family of Seneca DUTCHER. I have seen a Seneca born 1815 and know they are NOT the same person. Other members of the Seneca DUTCHER family besides son John H are: Solomon who died in the Civil War, Margaret who married John TAYLOR, Henrietta who married John KENNEDY, and Warren Rianger who married Jenny. If anyone sees a connection, email back and I will share text or gedcom files and a few photos. Regards, Jeff Gurvine

Dutcher general research - especially NY family

I would very much like to compare research on the various Dutcher families residing in New York during the mid-late 1700s.

I can verify my particular group to John & Martha (Thomas) Dutcher who resided in Oppenheim, Montgomery (now Fulton Co., NY up until abt 1825.

I am still not satisfied that the above John Dutcher was the son of Johannis & Lois (Washburn) Dutcher.

I have compiled a great deal of info on CT, NY & MI Dutchers, including marriages, births, deaths, wills, military records, family histories, etc.

I'm currently attempting to place this data into familial groupings. ack.

Is anyone interested in some indepth research with me?

Names: Partlow, Partlo, Cranston, Davis, Murphy, Smalling, Bussing, Dutcher, Rogers,

From the book cited as: Anonomous author, History of Tuscola and Bay Counties Michigan with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Some of Their Prominent Men and Pioneers, (Chicago: H. R. Page & Co., 1883), page 137

“David E. CRANSTON, postmaster, merchant and notary public, was born in Roxbury, Delaware County, New York, 16 June 1813. At the age of fourteen years he removed with his parents to Wayne County, NY. He spent four years there, and then returned to his grandfather's in his native county. Here in 1833 he commenced teaching school, and continued steadily in that profession until 1845. He was Married 20 December 1835 to Miss Mary DAVIS, of Marbletown, NY. They had four children. Ann M., Thomas C. [killed in the Army], Elizabeth O. [now Mrs William PARTLO], and Mary I. [afterwards Mrs. M. MURPHY], deceased in April 1879. Mrs. Mary Cranston died 11 August 1844.
Mr.Cranston's second marriage was to Miss Ann E. SMALLING, of Goshen, NY, 4 May 1845. She was born on Long Island, 4 October 1817. They have four living children: Frances [now Mrs. D. BUSSING], Henry, Eliza [now Mrs. C. DUTCHER], and Emma [now Mrs. F. ROGERS].
Mr. Cranston came to Tyrone, Mich., in May 1844, and resided there until 18565, when he sold his estate there and came to section 16, in Fair Grove, where he now has a pleasant home. He has also a store of drugs, groceries, etc., in Fair Grove Village, where in connection with the post office he conducts a steadily increasing business.
On 2 January 1864 he enlisted in Company I, Fourth Michigan Cavalry, when he was over fifty years of age, and served his country until the Confederacy was quashed. He had in the war one son, two brothers-in-law, two sons-in-law, and seven nephews. His son was killed; one nephew was starved to death in Andersonville prison; and another came home from Danville prison with his mind perfectly demented.
Mr. Cranston has served as township clerk in Livingston County four years, and in Tuscola County he has served as county surveyor eight years, justice of the peace four years, and as notary public some ten years – and to that office he has just received another appointment. He has been a local preacher among the United Brethren in Christ since 1871.” end

I have additional information for those interested.
Marc Partlow
mpart74960@aol.com
I am a descendent of Charles H. Dutcher and his parents Marvin and Sarah H. Dutcher who lived in Sparta and North Dansville, Livingston County, New York in the 19th century. I am trying to find out Sarah H.'s maiden name. My conjecture is that it begins with an H, as both Charles and Sarah have the middle initial, but have no proof of this.
Also Marvin's father Charles lived in Cicero, Onondaga, NY (died in 1814) but I am unable to find Charles's father. Since Cicero was founded shortly before this time (ca. 1807?) I am positive that Charles came from somewhere else (Otsego or Dutchess County, NY) and is perhaps the Charles who is a son of Christoffel Dutcher mentioned in Griffin's genealogy. Again I cannot prove this.
Any help would be deeply appreciated, Brett

1930 Gloversville Census Rhodes/ Dutcher

I am stuck! I am researching the Rhodes family need help making the following connection to Dutcher.

The 1930 US Census of Gloversville, Fulton, NY, I found Carlton Dutcher abt 1897 wife Della abt 1897. Children Thelma/ Helena abt 1918, Raymond abt 1922, Carlton Jr abt 1924 and Robert abt 1926. ALso living with them is George Rhodes abt 1851 listed as grandfather. I can confirm my connection to this Rhodes based on the street address on the census. But I can not seem to make any logical explaination as to how he is grandfather to this Dutcher family.

I believe his relation must be to Della, but how? Any idea her maiden name? George D and wife Rhoda abt 1854 had 2 children. Ida abt 1878 and Fred abt 1876. My information on Fred is limited.

Any information would be great!

Both Cyper and George C. were married to Snyder women- Cypher to Naomi and George to Catherine and then to Cornelia.
Leo Dutcher

Trrying to help a freind. Her grandmother is Hazel L. (Dutcher) SAGE (b. 8/2/1886 in Missouri, d. 9/1966 in Calif). We can get only partially past that point. Her mother is Henrietta FILE (Dutcher) (b. 2/1866 in Missouri, d. 1930-1 in Calif). We have information on her parent's ( Silas H. & Elizabeth FILE) family, but are stumped on her spouse, one Leo DUTCHER. Leo and Henrietta had three children: Hazel L. (my grandmother), 8/1886 in Mo., Gayle (male), 1889-90? and Lyda L., 8/1894 in Misssouri. The only information we have on Leo is family lore that he had a son named Roy by another woman about 1882? A prior marriage? On the 1900 census, Henrietta Dutcher is listed as living with her brother, Edgar File, in Macon County, Missouri. Her marital status is "widowed." Leo is therefore presumed to have died between 1893 - 1900. His children (my grandmother) also listed, show their father as being born in NY. That's all we know about Leo. Any help would be appreciated.

Rose Dutcher Turk NY State

I just learned today that my g-grandmother's maiden name is Dutcher. Her first name is Rose and she married George Turk & resided in NY, I believe it was in the Catskill Mts. although some of the Turk family moved to Binghamton, NY. George & Rose (nee Dutcher) Turk's children are: Mae Belle (my grandmother) b. May 1900 d. 1946 in Binghamton. The other children of George & Rose are: Orphie dob 12 Oct. 1897, Grace, James, Mahlon (his twin brother died at age 8), Blanche, Ella (married a Cortright & lived behind Ross Park, Binghamton, NY) & Nancy (referred to as Nan).

I don't know anything about my g-grandmother's family or her date of birth, although from the dates of birth for her children, I would assume her year of birth would be between 1850-1875.

I hope there is a connection to a Dutcher family, as I want to put some more family puzzle pieces together for my mother and my aunt, both of whom are the granddaughters of Rose Dutcher Turk.

Simeon b. 1757 vs. Simeon b. 1753 vs. Simeon b. 1762

I believe that I've somehow confused these 3 Simeon Dutchers.

Simeon, b. 1757, son of Loyalist Dirck/Derrick, brother of Elias - Simeon & Elias veterans of Revolutionary War. Married 1st Margaretta Coon, married 2nd Cornelia Decker. Had children Direck, George, John, Ephraim, Hendrick, Simeon G. & Elizabeth.

Is this the same Simeon as Simeon b. 1762?
Pension file:
New York: Simeon Dutcher
Residing in West Brunswick, Herkimer Co., NY in 1832
Age 71 in 1833
Simeon entered service at Dover, Dutchess Co., NY as a teamster
Simeon’s uncle was Philip Nies (Neese?) of Dover
Simeon was born 25 Aug 1761 at Dover, Dutchess Co., NY
He moved to Claverick, Columbia Co., NY after the Rev. War
Then to Greenbush in Rensselaer Co., NY
Then to Half Moon, Saratoga Co., NY
Then to West Brunswick, Herkimer Co., NY

Simeon, b. 1753, father & wife unknown. Had children Simeon S., Benjamin, Silas, Peter Covil & Adam Mott. Also a Revolutionary War veteran.

"Historical and Biographical Album of the Chippewa Valley Wisconsin”:
DUTCHER, DANIEL W., (Civil War) farmer, P. O. Rock Elm, Pierce county, was born in New Brunswick, Herkimer county, N. Y., May 13, 1831. His grandfather, Simeon Dutcher, Sr., was a native of France, and came to New York in 1770, from Holland, joined the Continental forces and took part in the siege of Yorktown, where two of his brothers were wounded. He settled in Dutchess county, N. Y., was married three times and became the father of twenty-two children. He died in 1856, aged 103 years. One of his sons, Simeon, Jr., was born August 12, 1791, and married Lydia Schouten, who came of a "Mohawk Dutch" family. Their children were: Phoebe (Mrs. R. Schouten), James, Mary A. (Mrs. F. Jones), Benjamin, Daniel W., and Delilah (Mrs. A. Hyatt). Simeon Dutcher, Jr., died at Green, Mecosta county, Mich., in July, 1883.

Sure would like someone actively researching the family with whom I can exchange thoughts, theories, etc.

Researching the Polly Springer who married a Noah Springer in N.Y. or N.J. We are unsure of much of Polly's early years but we know that she married Noah around 1795-1800 as she had 5 children with him, George Springer b.1802 being one of them. Noah died in 1806 and Polly moved on to N.Y. then to Galena Ill. then possibly Michigan but we know that she ended up in Iowa where she had 5 more children with her second? husband, a Mr. Travis. We also know by family tradition that Polly was of "Black Dutch" descent. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I hope to locate 4 children of John and Martha (THOMAS) DUTCHER, born between the years of 1804-1820.

John & Martha resided in the Oppenheim, Montgomery (now Fulton) Co., NY from 1800 to at least 1822. Around 1822, they moved to what is now Orleans Co., NY.

According to their son, Daniel's, biography, John & Martha had 10 children - 7 boys & 3 girls. I have located:

1. Margaret b. 1800 m. Gilbert J. DANIELS >MI
2. Stephen b. 1802 m. Nancy BARRETT >Orleans Co.
3. Daniel b. 1805 m. Mariah BULLOCK >MI
4. Rebecca b. 1807 m. Jeremiah BULLOCK >MI
5. Oliver b. 1814 m. Harriet HANDY >Orleans Co.
6. Benjamin b. 1822 m. Louisa TOWNER >MI

I am missing:

1 Female b. bet 1810-1820 prob. Oppenheim
1 Male b. bet 1804-1810 prob. Oppenheim
1 Male b. bet 1810-1820 prob. Oppenheim
1 Male b. bet 1815-1820 prob. Oppenheim

According to a very elderly cousin, John & Martha had a son, Sentian or Sension DUTCHER. I believe this may actually be St. John DUTCHER. He supposedly also went to Michigan.

Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated! I have tons of notes on the DUTCHER line, even those who have no known connections.

I'll gladly share for info on the Montgomery/Orleans DUTCHER family.
Fremont Harrison Dutcher (l877-1965)

Am seeking info on the birthplace of Fremont Harrison Dutcher who died in Randolph Co, MO in l965. His wife's l954 obit showed nine children, three sons living in Nebraska towns. And this person's given name of Fremont leads one to think that his family may have been living in Fremont or Dodge Co, NE at the time. Any ideas?

Dutcher Family in New York

I just discovered THE DUTCHER FAMILY by Walter Kenneth Griffin on line at <http://www.witsend.org/gen/dutcher/griffin.pdf>.

The Dutchers are in-law to me, and most of what I have about them is from Frank J. Doherty's THE SETTLERS OF BEEKMAN PATENT.

Griffin's research seems very solid. Can anyone tell me about the reliabilty of this book? It has more detail than I ever expected to see in Dutcher family history.

My children's ancestry connects to the Dutchers through Jannetje/Janet/Jane Dutcher, born October 1812 in New York, daughter of Gideon Dutcher and probably Sarah Manchester and married to John Wenchen or Winchester. I have her place of burial in Illinois, if anyone wants it.

My gg grandfather, Cornelius Dutcher is buried in Portland M.E. Cemetery in Brant,WI, in Calumet County. I believe his parents, Joshua and Cynthia are buried next to him with a possible brother on their other side. I was there this weekend, September 29, 2001, and noticed someone had done a chalking of his headstone. If you know who may have done this please contact me. He died young leaving only two young daughters. My great grandmother had seven children live to adulthood where the other daughter, I believe only had one child, a girl. My great grandmothers name was Lillian Dutcher Trever. Her sisters name was Ella Beardsley. I would love to share info with anyone researching this family.

I am trying to find a link to this Dutcher family. Sidney and Helen were married about 1926 to 1930. They had 1 daughter JoAnne Dutcher who was born about 1930. This family may have moved to to Texas. Helen was born to Joe & Emma Schick Schultz in Butler County Ohio also. Helen is buried in the Greenwood Cemetary Butler, County Ohio with her parents Joe & Emma. I have not been able to find out what happened to Joanne Dutcher. She may be in Texas or may have already passed.
I saw a crime show once that featured a Joanne Dutcher of Texas/ or Michigan who was the victim of a rapist I believe. I have not been able to connect her though.

I am still looking for any information about my gggggrandfather WHEATON DUTCHER b 1 March 1788 Amenia Dutchess NY d 15 May 1813 Herkimer NY m to ELEANOR WHEELER b 24 July 1787 Amenia Dutchess NY d 7 Jan 1859 Deerfield Corners Oneida NY (she was married a second time to Pratt Smith). Since the last time I posted I have determined several things about this grandfather through finding cousins and sharing information. I am fairly sure that Wheaton's father was Cornelius Dutcher s/o Gabriel and Elizabeth Dutcher and mother was Elizabeth Wheaton. I can't find any information regarding Elizabeth. If you are a cousin and related to this family with more information than I have I would be grateful for the help. If I have things I can share with you, I will be gald to.
Thanks Debbie

Looking for any info (but esp. parents) for Annie W. Dutcher and Thomas A. Smith. Identifying information follows:

According to Manistee, MI marriage records, Thomas A. Smith and Annie Dutcher were married Dec. 25, 1878 at Manistee. Thomas was born in Harrison, OH and was 31 years of age. Annie was born in Fondulac Co., WI and was 17 years of age. I have not seen the original record, only the summary in the International Genealogical Index (IGI).

According to the 1900 census, Thomas A. Smith and Anna W. Smith were living in Sumner Twp., Gratiot Co., MI. He was b. Aug. 1846, OH; she was b. Oct. 1861, MI. Their children were George W., b. Dec. 1882; Jennie M., b. July 1884; Ada B., b. Oct. 1889; Lizzie P., b. July 1898; and Earl J., b. Apr. 1900.

Jennie M.'s full name was Jennie Mae Smith, and according to her death certificate she was born July 18, 1884, Manistee Co., parents T. H. Smith (b. Ohio) and Anna Dutcher (b. Wisconsin). She was married to Milton Eckley Cota April 28, 1901, in Mecosta Co., MI, and her marriage certificate names parents Thos. Smith and Anna Dutches.

Patron submitted IGI records give Adam for Thomas' middle name, Sep. 12, 1913 for his date of death, and William Smith and Susanna Huff for his parents. These records give Williamette for Anna's middle name, and June 1930 for her date of death. I have no independent corroboration of these facts.
Jeanette DUTCHER, b. 1812, married to John Winchester

I am seeking information about the wife of John Winchester, born about 1815 in New York. John appears in the 1880 census of Rantuol in Champaign County, Illinois, 65 years old, born in New York of parents from the same state, married to "Jenett," 66, also born in New York of parents from the same state (p. 247B in the Latter Day Saints search site).

From family records, I have the first name Janet for John's wife. According to these records she was of New York Dutch stock.

An old query by Lorrey Calderin provided the very probable name of Dutcher as Jeanette's last name: "I'm researching John WINCHESTER b. 1818 and Jeanette DUTCHER b. 1812 both living in Lebanon, Madison, NY in 1840. I'm assuming they were mar. in Lebanon also. I believe John's father is Sylvester WINCHESTER. This family moved to IL around 1850. I would appreciate any help.'

I have only bits and pieces that I am reconstructing and would appreciate hearing from someone with better information than mine. My children descend from this line on their mother's side.
Jan Willemszen Duyster, ancestors of most of the US Dutcher family. They married ca. 1660 in Ulster Co. NY.
I am looking for information on Charles Franklin Dutcher and Sarah Marie Crawford Odione Dutcher.
Sarah was married briefly to Edward Odion(Odione) in the 1880's.
On Edward Odione's pension record, Charles F Dutcher is the guardian listed for Sarah Marie Crawford Odione.
In the 1900 South Dakota Census from Brown Co.Charles and Sarah are married and there are five children listed.
I do not believe the children are all Sarah's as I found a record for the third eldest child with a different mother(Rhoda Ann Bonney)
My family record says that Edward and Sarah had a son Louis Odione.
I can find no record of him anywhere else.
The family record also says they lived in Hillsboro, North Dakota. i do not know if that meant Sarah and Edward Odione or Sarah and Charles Dutcher.
From a pension record it says that Charles was a major in the civil war.
Children listed for CharlesF and Sarah M are:
Irine A b 1881South Dakota
Essie M b. 9-14-1883 Minnehaha County, Minnesota
Edna b 1886 South Dakota
Aura M b 1888 South Dakota
Ross F b 1894 South Dakota

I am looking for a marriage record of Edward P Odione and Sarah Marie Crawford.
Also a death record & cemetery record of Edward and Sarah. T
hen a marriage record of Charles F Dutcher and a cemetery record of him also and his 1st wife Rhoda Ann Bonney.
One contact said Edward died in Vermillion South Dakota and is buried in Bluff View Cemetery there, but no stone has been found yet.
Help

Hi there!

I've been researching my Brower line, and discovered an Obediah Brower that may be my 3rd g-grandmother's brother. I know that my grandmother, Margaret, spent some time in Iowa...so when I ran a search of her brother's name, and it turned up in Iowa during the right time period, I was interested. The record shows Obediah marrying a Nancy Dutcher in 1879. Is anyone familiar with this couple?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obadiah BROWER
Sex: M

Marriage(s):
Spouse: Nancy L. DUTCHER
Marriage: 29 Sep 1879
Hamilton, Iowa

Thanks, Bonnie

That is really about all that I know about him.
I don't know anything about his side of the Family and was wondering if he even is alive. not that that would matter it would just be nice to now a little bit about him and that side of my family so that I could tell my 2 sons something someday. If there is anybody out there that knows him or of him or doesn't know anything about him I would greatly appreciate some help in Locating my Father no matter what the outcome is. I just think I deserve a little info and a chance after 28 years to know him, or at least know something about him. Thank you for reading this.

Catherine Duytser/Dutcher m. Jean Rulon

I am trying to figure out if I have a lineage right in my family -- this has been a "possible link" for many years and I'm trying to see if I can find proof.

My g-g-g-g-grandfather was Luke Rulon of Burlington co. NJ, who married Mary Willis. He was b. ca. 1740. I believe that he was descended from the Duytser/Dutcher family of Kingston NY in the following way:

1) Jan Willemszen Duytser m. Grietje Cornelisz _____

2) Catherine Duytser/Dutcher/Duitcher m. in Kingston NY on April 13, 1701 to Jan or Jean Rulon, b. in LaTremblade, France. Jean had married previously to (1) Jenne Loucheur and (2) Judith Geraud.

3) Joel Rulon bt. Jan. 17, 1703 in Kingston; Joel relocated to Jamaica NY where he married Geertruyd Stevense ca. 1723. Two known children: Joel (bt. 10-25-1724) and Sara (bt. 3-27-1727). A Joel Rulon filed a will in NJ and listed children Sarah, Desiah, Phoebe, Mary, Luke, Nathaniel, David, and Ephraim. I suspect that this Luke is my ancestor Luke Rulon who married Mary Willis.

Does anyone have any further information on any of these generations? I'm interested in anyone who can provide any insight into the connections between Rulon, Duytser/Dutcher, Stevense, and Willis.

Thanks....

Gordon Bonnet
Trumansburg NY

This evening I learned from the granddaughter of Nancy D. Chase (nee Turk) that there was a picture of an Indian woman, dressed in Indian garb who is said to be my gg-or ggg-grandmother who was a Choctaw Indian. This woman would have been either married to a male Turk or a male Dutcher from NY State.

My g-grandparents are George Lyman Turk and Rose Etta Dutcher, both born in the 1850's. George is the son of James Turk and Elizabeth Peterson and Rose is the dtr. of James Dutcher and her mother is unknown.

Anyone have any idea's about this Indian lady?
My email is MistyBiue49@aol.com

Thanks to anyone who may have a lead for me!!
Linda
