Hi,

Rowland's youngest brother was Thomas who was born in the 1570's in Staffordshire. He amrried Lawyre Griffye (or Griffiths)and he died in 1632 and was buried at Waverton. He had quite a few children including son Joseph of Huntington who died in 1689. Joseph was married at least two times. He didn't have any sons called William so I think this is noty your line. However, Joseph had brothers Samuel and Thomas and they did have sons called William. Also John the illegitimate son of Sir Piers Dutton had sons William, Henry, Ralph and John and some of these had descendants called William. I will have a detailed look through my files and let you know what I have on your William of Waverton. It will have to be next week before I get back to you.

Jeff

You suggest that my ancestor may be descended from the brother of a Rowland or Joseph Dutton if i remember rightly. Do you have any further info on that? Do these brothers connect to the Dutton Hatton tree for example? Do they have a brother called William?

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your message as well.

The family tree line you have here is for the main Hatton Dutton line.

Here is my information about them:

5. Thomas Dutton (parents Peter Dutton/Margaret Hayes)
Bapt: 7 Sep 1630 Waverton, Cheshire
Bur: 10 Dec 1677 Waverton, Cheshire
Married about 1660 Cheshire
Mary Houlden
(Her Father was Richard Houlden of Waverton. The
Houdens were also a Lancashire Family with land
near Warrington)
Bapt: 23 Sep 1625 Waverton Cheshire
Bur: unknown

Children
- Thomas Dutton
Bapt: c1662
Bur: Probably 1719 Chowley, Cheshire (will)
No issue mentioned.
- Edward Dutton
Bapt: c1663 Waverton, Cheshire
Bur: Unknown
Possibly Edward married Mary Done (nee Catherall) in
1686
- Mary Dutton
Bapt: Unknown
Bur: Unknown

When Peter Dutton died in 1696 leaving no will, Thomas and Edward challenged Dorothy Massie as the next male heirs. The inheritance was decided in favour of Dorothy. Dorothy and her husband John Massie sold the Hatton Lands to the Cholmondeley Family in 1699.

The Visitations, Leycester, Burkes Peerage all mention that the Hatton Duttons and Dutton Duttons died out. However, this is not true. and many of the Cheshire, Lancashire and USA Duttons can trace their Dutton name back to them as can be shown by court records, parish records and wills.

As far as I know, there were no male Dutton grandchildren to Thomas and Mary Houlden unless like many of their relatives they went to Virginia. South Carolina or Maryland. I would be interested in finding out which son you may be descended from. Remember the Huntington line had lots of Thomas's as did Edward and Mary Calverley's other children's lines (namely Richard died 1667 and Thomas died 1642)and also Edward's brother George's line. The Dutton Duttons did not died out either. Adem Dutton had children at Cheshunt in Hertsfordshire and his brother Sir George Dutton had children in Staffordshire. Also John the illegitimate son of Sir Piers Dutton had children despite what the accepted records state and some them were in Waverton in the early 1600's. Even despite what is said in Leycester, Edward the Curate died 1773 at Harthill had nephews and nieces who lived in the Congleton area!

Jeff

Hi Jeff.

Thanks for your message. I forgot my password and have had to create a new account.

I'd be interested to know more about the family history you're tracing. We're very likely related but what you've said doesn't quite fit with what I have. I have 2 family trees. the newer of the two begins with William Dutton of Waverton who was born, I guess, about 1660 and died in 1724. The earlier tree does not have a Thomas Dutton (d.1632.) It goes like this, backwards through the generations

1. Thomas D (1630 - 77) m. Mary Holden.

2. Peter D (1602 - 39)m. Margaret Hayes daughter of Sir Thomas Hayes, Lord Mayor of London

3. Edward D (1580 - 1621) m. Mary Calverly

4. Rowland D (1552 - 1605) m. ?

5. Ralph D (d. 26 June 1587) m. Anne Townshend

6. Sir Piers D. (1500 - 46) m. Elinour Leigh

and from there back to Odard, who came over in 1066.

I'd be interested to know how your info talies with this.

Thomas D (generation 1) appears to be one of 11: Edward (b.1623), Peter (1625 - 69), Robert (1626 - 66), Mary (1628), Elizabeth (1629), Thomas (1630 - 77), Alice (1634(, Rowland (1635), Henry (1637), Richard and an unnamed daughter. Al born at Waverton.

Best

Ed

Hi,

I have been researching the Duttons of Waverton for several years. I think your William is a descendant of Thomas Dutton (died 1632 Waverton) and Lawrye Griffye.Thomas Dutton was the youngest son of Sir Raufe Dutton and Ann (sometimes wrongly called Amicia) Townshend and was born in Ludlow Shropshire. She was related to the Dukes of Norfolk. Thomas was a younger member of the Hatton Duttons. He was the son of Sir Raufe Dutton and a brother of Sir Rowland Dutton. Thomas Dutton had several sons including Joseph of Huntington died 1689 Waverton. Joseph had several brothers and it is from them that William is most likely descended.

Jeff

Jeff

In the past there have been some lively exchanges about this Dutton lineage involving Artie Valerius, Sue Dutton Rogers, and myself. I have not had contact with either of the others for several years. I am a descendant of a brother of Patrick and Wiley named Thomas, whose ancestry has been elusive. I would like to find a male Dutton of this lineage who is willing to participate in DNA testing, or a female descendant of Thomas's daughter, Malitha Ann Dutton, for DNA testing. A female descendant of one of the sisters of Patrick, Wiley and Thomas would also be suitable for the latter purpose. Such testing might reveal whether there is any Cherokee ancestry in the family, something long suspected by all the researchers of this line that I know.

There were about 50,000 Dutton scattered around the United States at any one time. That figure is somewhat of a guess.
Since you are using Ancestry, you have good access to census. The 1930 census is out, then work your way back to Ohio on the 1850 census. One of the largest Dutton files in the "Dick Dutton" file--not all Dutton since he has more than 300,000 names on it. It is on Rootsweb and Ancestry, since Ancestry.com now controls rootsweb. Look for that tree on Ancestry.
Good luck. E.D.

I just found your posting. I am in search some document
for Lemuel Dutton (1800-1855) other than the Austin cemetery record. I have only the 1830-1850 census. Was his birth place OH or PA? Also Lemuel's parents. Theory Abraham Dutton (1760-1810) Thank you for any assistance.
I am desperatley looking for any information regarding the death of my gggrandfather Frank David Dutton. It has been said that he died in 1906 in an accident/explosion while working on the docks in Liverpool. I have not been able to locate any online newspapers from this time and area nor can I afford to order the death certificate (I am living in Canada). Any information that anyone might have would be of great value.

Yep,I'm still looking too. Still can't directly connect them to the "Holbrook" guidenship, but does explain why my Benj's census didn't line up with number of his children. We'll just keep on looking. Have them married to Hameltons,Williamsons,Goodwins, but still no direct connection other than they both lived in Starks. Kathy

Re: Lemuel Dutton

I have been studying Albert Dutton who married Delia Ann
Wilkins in Shelby county, Illinois. As a consequence, I have been looking at all the Dutton families in Shelby, Effingham and Fayette counties Illinois. It appears that they all may be related to each other. It is interesting that the name Dutton is spelled Dutting on the 1850 census in Effingham County. It is spelled Ditton on the 1850 census in Shelby county.
Anyway, I assume this is the 1850 census for your Lemuel(index appears to list him as Samuel) Dutton:

Image 12
1850 census Shelby County Town dist
Samuel Dutting 52 m Delaware
Nancy 49 f Maryland
John 22 m IL
Martin 18 m IL
Abriham 16 m IL
Mary 13 f IL
Sariah 12 f IL
Milia 10 f IL

1860 census Illinois Shelby County
Nancy Dutton 52 PA
Abraham 26 OH
Sarah E. 18 IL
Mildred 16 IL

1860 census Illinois Shelby County
Martin B. 27 OH
Nancy 28 IL
Emma 3 IL

The Albert Dutton I am looking for may be Alfred
listed below. The ages match.
Abraham Dutton listed below appears to have moved
to Effinham County and married Harriet E.(Annie)Scaefe.
This Abraham Dutton appears to have died in East St. Lewis Illinois.
Abraham and Harriets' son Dudley Sylas Dutton died in St. Lewis County, Missouri.

Harriet may be living with Albert's son Oscar on the 1930 census in Effingham county , Illinois.

1850 census Illinois Shelby County Town Dist.
Harris Dutting 49 m Delaware
Milton 28 m N Y
William 17 m OH
Jane 15 f OH
Alfred 13 m OH
Levi 10 m OH
Edward 8 m OH
Sarah 6 f OH
Abriham 4 m Oh
Martha 41 f OH
Mary 1 f OH
Becker 60 m Delaware
Ariena 38 f NY

1860 census Illinois Effingham County
Albert Dutton 22m OH engineer
Della 19 f Oh
Cora 1 f IL

1870 census Illinois Fayette County Avena twp
Albert Dutton 33 m OH
Ann 31 f IL
Henry 4 m IL
Oscar 2 m IL

1880 census Illinois Effingham County Villiage of Alamont
Delia Dutton 40 IL KY KY
Henry 14 IL OH IL
Oscar 12 IL OH IL
Franklin 9 IL OH IL
George 7 IL OH IL

1880 census Illinois Effingham
Abram Duttan 33
Harriet 21
John 4

1900 censu Illinois Effingham
Abram Dutton 57 IL DEL DEL
Annie 40 IL IL IL
Jonhie 22 IL IL IL
Thomas 19 IL IL IL
Millie 17 IL IL IL
Dudley 14 IL IL IL
Effie 7 IL IL IL
Arthor 5 IL IL IL

1910 census Illinois Effingham County Mound Alamont City
Dutton, Abraham H. 68 IL DEL DEL
, Harriet E. 49 IL IL IL
, John C. 34 IL IL IL
, Nellie Mae 25 IL IL IL
, Dudley S. 22 IL IL IL
, Effie B. 17 IL IL IL
, Arthur H. 14 IL IL IL

1920 census Missouri, St. Lewis County St. Lewis City
Dutton, A.
Can anyone help me with the ancestry of a 'William Dutton' Yeoman of Waverton, Cheshire? Died 30th May 1724. Married to Margtret. Will 1723. Proved 1727. Had son William Dutton, Gent. b. 1691. d. 1762. Buried in Massey Family Chancel. Waverton. Any help or ideas on Duttons in Waverton appreciated. Have 2 family trees, one going bck to about 1066 - trying to connect the two with more certainty.

Dutton Marrage Certificates.

I have two copies of my Grandparents marrage Certificate, on both copies their ages are wrong but everything else is right. The one says their marrage was in 1905, the other 1915. I know that they ran away to get married and that she would have been 20ys old, may-be she added some years on, but were birth certificates needed then to prove age?. The 1905 seems right as they had their first child in 1910. On both Certificates their fathers names, proffesions, etc. all add up. Can anyone solve this? Hope so. Carole.

Hey cousin ,how are you? My brother Rodney Dutton and myself have just started tracking down the Dutton family. My granddad was Ted Dutton from Elmore City, Oklahoma(formly Blackwell). Grandpa's real name was Ferguson Roosevelt(his sister-Nellie.brother-Chancey). Of course by now You know why he was named that. I myself didnt until recently know the whole story. We probably have nothing to offer -just starting- but excited to find You-a relative. Our family branches from Chancey-Oscar's son by his first wife. Hope to hear back from you. My brother is the one with the most of the research. His e-mail is gotellthem@yahoo.com. You have a good day ! Becky
Ms. Knight,

That's wonderful...!! We'd be related by marriage only.

Richard Morton Tate was her grandson (which would be your cousin?) and my step-grandfather. He married my grandmother (Irene Harris Tate) when my mother was young so he's the only grandfather I knew on that side.

I'd love to share info... you can email me leeranii @ msn.com.

Thanks!
Jennifer
