In the annals of the Eastern Townships no record is found of Indian villages, and never were the first settlers harassed by Indian tribes in search of scalps and plunder. With the close of the war between England and France, in 1759, the stopping of all these Indian barbarities was accomplished. (Previous to that time the whole energy of both countries were brought to bear to educate their Indian allies to commit the most inhuman practices on their enemies.) The Eastern Townships were the hunting grounds of several tribes belonging to the Algonquin nation. The Iroquois, in New York State (enemies of the Abenaquis [Abenaki] who were enlisted on the French side) were too near to allow Indian villages to be established with any degree of security, and the English colonists had not pushed their settlements anywhere near this territory at the time. One group of Indians came down and lived in the Charleston, Orleans County, Vermont, area during the Revolution.

The Abenaquis Indians, previous to the coming of the French Jesuits among them, had their villages principally in the eastern part of Maine. The Jesuit priests, as fast as they made converts to the Christian religion, endeavored to separate them from their heathen breathen, and at the same time bring them closer to Quebec and Montreal, where they would be more under the influence of the French. The result was the mission villages were established at Coughnawaga, near Montreal, on the Chaudiere River, and one on the St. Francis River, near its confluence with the St. Lawrence. These last were Abenaquis converts, and became knows as the St. Francis Indians. These mission Indians, as well as being taught the principles of Christianity, were always at the command of the French General, and committed some of the most horrible massacres known in Indian warfare. For barbarity they exceeded their heathen brethren. The French cannot be blamed more than the English, for the latter set on their Iroquois allies to emulate the outrages of their opponents.

The thoroughfare between the mission village of the Abenaquis Indians was generally up the St. Francis River, as far as the present city of Sherbrooke, across to Lake Memphremagog, and down the Connecticut River to the English settlements. The Indians of the mission village on the Chaudiere River also used the Connecticut River to reach the same settlements. Bouchette in his "Topographical Dictionary" published in 1815 mentions that there is a sort of Indian path through the township of Auckland, from the Connecticut River in the direction of the River Chaudiere."

I don't know if your information is still current (email) but I have the following information about Evelina Duvall. She was born around 1801 in Kentucky to Obadiah Scoot and Mary (last name unk). She married Joseph Duvall and had four children, Obadiah, Ophelia, Joseph and Penelope. Joseph married Anna Vessels, Penelope married Abraham Mills on 4 Aug, 1846 (Ste. Gen marriages), Ophelia married Howard Kenner on 3 Jan, 1851 (same source which can be found on Heritage Quest).

Evelina Scott's siblings were Evan, charles W., George, Thomas B, Mary and Lucretia. The will of Obadiah Scott can be found on Rootsweb message boards if you do a search. The names are listed there with spouses.

I do not have a death date on Evelina but she is listed in the 1850 & 1860 but not the 1870 census. Her husband, Joseph is not listed in the 1850 census so he may have died prior to that census.

This is not one of my ancestors so this is all that the information that I have regarding this family. I know that one of the family names (a later marriage) was Griffard. I do not know any information about the marriage.

I don't have information for you, but I do have a question. Do you know if the Duvals you are researching are related to an F.C. Duval in Louisa County? He was listed as the employer of my possible 2nd great grandparents (Charles & Catherine Johnson) on my possible great-grandmother's (Mary Johnson) birth record. She was born in December of 1865.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — William Duval, 86, Muscatine, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2009, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.

Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at Trinity Episcopal Church. His cremains will be placed in the columbarium at Trinity Episcopal Church.

“Bill” was born on June 29, 1923, in Bolivar, Missouri, the son of William Duval Sr. and Marie B. Townsend Duval. He married Barbara L. MacCartney on October 5, 1946, in Bellows Falls, Vermont.

He graduated from Wharton, The University of Pennsylvania.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942-46.

He worked for HON Company as a sales manager from 1955-63. He worked as sales manager and manufacturers' representative for several other companies.

He was a member of the Elks, Elks Chanters and Trinity Episcopal Church.

He loved music and musical performances and wrote the musical ''Great State of Trinity'' for Trinity Episcopal Church. He was an accomplished pianist, performing in various locations and also teaching lessons. William's hobbies included writing, recording music, tennis, golf, and gardening.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara Duval of Muscatine; and a sister, Betty Ann Duval of Bronxville, New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The Duval from Stockton have not been connected to the Duval from Oregon or Manteca, CA, although some of my Duval from Stockton died in Douglas County, Oregon.

A friend, Barbara Cook has put together a very good and accurate tree for our Duval from Stockton on Rootsweb. Just go there and type in Jacob Duval b. abt 1810 Canada married to Dorothea, Charles Duval b. abt 1842 married to Mary Cook, Claude Edward duval b. abt 1869 MN married to Lillian Violetta Parrish, or Jessie Lewis (Louis)Duval married to Lucille Goreham.

That will give you a good start on our Stockton Duvals. There was a Dalton Duval who was the son of either Jessie Lewis Duval or Jessie Warren (Ted) Duval. I think it was my Uncle "Ted". I have a baby picture of Dalton in my files.

Surprised other cousins have not replied to you yet!

Hello ~ my first husband was a Duval and my daughter is
trying to trace his family. He is deceased so many unanswered questions. His grandmother lived in Stockton but at some point I believe her family was from Oklahoma. I even vaguely recall being told their was Cherokee in the line. Which you hear from just about everyone. I checked the Dawes Rolls and there are approx 16 Duval's on the rolls. She does not know how his grandfather spelled his first name but it was something like Darus or Darris Duval his wife (my first husbands grandmother) was June (born in Stockton). I do not know if she remarried or if her maiden name was Ash/Ashe ~ we are going on old info. Please contact if any of this sounds familiar. Thanks Cheryl

I suggest any of you interested in this line look a the DuVal Family Association web site: duvalfamily.com ...we just had a reunion in Williamsburg, VA and found the name of Samuel DuVal on the monument outside the restored captiol at Williamsburg.
He was the middle son of Chavalier Daniel DuVal, the Huguenot who settled in Ware Parish Co.,Va. in 1701 off the ship the Nassau...many can help as the descendents of the other sons are still working the lineage...take a look

Here's a website on the sons of Wm Pope Duval. It seems he had 8 children 3 of which were sons. It seems all of them ended up in TX as well as Wm P Duval.

Does anyone know anything about Compton Julius Duval? He was born October 26, 1878 in W. Virginia we think. He had a daughter named Della Ellen Duval with an unknown wife before remarrying a woman named Mary McCann and having 4 children with her, Compton Jr, Maynard, Eleanor, and Helen.

Family lore has it that he's descended from Governor Duval of Florida, but I don't have the progression there. Any information on Compton, his ancestors, or his first wife would be much appreciated
