Well, the oldest Cairns in Ontario seem to be from Ireland (County Down) and England. Perhaps they returned? Have you tried researching in the US? Robert could have been born to a family of UEL, who returned to NY? Maybe poke around there. If Robert was a military man in 1808, he could have been involved with The Battle of Crysler's Farm or another skirmish in the War of 1812. Check if he got a land grant?

Did I mention to you that Peter Mattice b. Nov 1805 Osnabruck may have gone with Seneca Deuel and Elizabeth Crysler to Nauvoo, Illinois? Peter is on Early LDS index.

What's missing is a paper trail! That's the difference between my guess and reality. Giggle. Although we have circumstantial evidence...and a lead, that's about it for now. We lucked-out on Ebenzer Duel leaving a Will, plus other documented mentions of Seneca and Elizabeth Crysler, plus "The UEL". Elizabeth's father's Dad, Uncle, and Grandfather would be about the most prominent UEL in upper Canada.
Besides The Battle of Crysler's Farm, have you read about The Cherry Valley Massacre (New York)of the American Revolution? Holley Molley!!!

There is another interesting piece of history that occured in the time-period and proximity of Elizabeth Crysler and Seneca Deuel; although Seneca died in Nauvoo, Illinois before making the trek to Utah, Another Deuel family went. Judging by the ages of their children that family was in Utah the year of The Mountain Meadows Massacre, and judging from the location, they were in very close proximity to it. Did I mention there was a similar modus operandi there as Cherry Valley? Ah! Interesting.

Thank you, Ann! We may be getting closer to the "right" Rebecca! The baptism reports on Rootsweb certainly do describe a likely suspect. I'm afraid, however, that I can't trace that particular Rebecca moving out of New York to Ontario or marrying Wm Cairns. I just don't see any record of it. There are several Family Trees on Rootsweb that mention this Rebecca b: 1801, but only one of them mentions a spouse, and it says she married Henry Andrew (not Wm Cairns)on 15 Sept 1824 and died in Stillwater in 1861. The other Trees don't show a spouse or a relo to Osnabruck. Again, I must be missing something.

I haven't been able to trace any further back from William Cairns' parents. The 1807 Anglican birth records indicate that his father, Robert Cairns was a Private in His Majesty's 49th Regiment of Foot, and his momma was Mary.

Any idea where Robert might have been born, or whether is military service brought him to another location after Quebec in 1807?

On my mother's side, my gggggrandfather was Daniel Duvall. There are strong indications that Daniel was a son of William Duvall and Sara Hinton. There may be a possibility that William was born in Maryland in February 1774. His tombstone shows that he died in 1848 at the age of 74. It has been 9 years since your e-mail was posted. Hopefully, you were able to find more information.

Don,
Regarding Elizabeth Bradshaw and Rebecca Beadshaw possibility of them being sisters:

James, father of Elizabeth (if the same James found living next to them on census) is about the same age as Rebecca. So, if that James is Elizabeth's father, then Elizabeth and Rebecca could not be sisters.

Sorry about the type-o's and spelling. If I dare try to edit, I lose it all.
Don,

Regarding Elizabeth Bradshaw:
Her father is James...he signed a hand-written statement giving consent for his daughter's marriage. It also states that Elizabeth Bradshaw was a Spinster. I have found that to be customary on marriage bonds.

Note that it was not the case with Rebecca Bradshaw. So, Rebecca could have been married before. Perhaps to a Bradshaw?

Still, the family tree on Rootsweb even has exact dates of birth, and they are in the same location as Seneca Deuel's relatives are. Also, my Jacob Duval married Dorothea Barrigar, and her relatives are from that area. The Bradshaw may be connected to the Deuel from that area. Check out the tree!

Regarding the numerous Duval "histories":

None of those "histories" have sources.

Rebecca Bradshaw may have simply been considered a Duvall because she and William were found in a Duval household.
There is a family tree on Rootsweb that is a likely candidate to be Rebecca's family. Included are two sisters, Mary and Sarah Bradshaw, and there are a Mary and Sarah on the Upper and Lower Canada Marriage Bonds who married in Osnabruck. That particular tree I am referring to is by Edith A. Emmi.

Here is one of her sources:
1.Title: Baptisms at the Schaghticoke Dutch Reformed Church 1752-1866
Author: New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, 1929-1934
Publication: Photocopied by Holly Cookis and transcribed by Debby Masterson for the Rensselaer County, NY GenWeb site
Repository:
Note: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enyreensse/sdrcb.htm
Media: Internet

Don,

Cheers and Kudos for finding William Cairns parents! I had intended on posting a reminder that william was born in Quebec, in hopes that it would nudge and prompt others in that direction of research.

Note that 1851 Census are the first for the Duval and Seneca had been long gone before that. In 1851 there were only two Duvall families:
1. Joseph married to Eleanor Beckstead and children
2. David married to Nancy Irwin and children.

Nancy was an Irish gal. The Cairns were Irish/Scotch.
The James Duval that rebecca Beadshaw and William Cairns were found living with is probably the sone of David and Nancy. My Jacob duval also had a son named James born the same year, who dropped off the radar after 1850 census St. Lawrence county, NY.

Perhaps the connection is Duval/Irwin, Cairns/Irwin/Duval...or something of the sort.

LOL! That's probably because he was right under our nose. Jacob left Canada after 1842, and Seneca died in Illinois the following year. I am curious as to when Seneca actually left. Also, I don't think any of the other Duval up there left Canada until after 1870.

Hello Eddy,

My line are the ones in Ontario. They may actually be Deuel and changed the spelling to Duval/Duvall. My guess is the spelling first made a definite change when they began marrying and baptising their children through circut ministers of the Wesleyen Methodist denomination, around the mid-1830's.

So far, the earliest docement is Seneca Deuel June 10, 1813. That is when he married Elizabeth Crysler.

Thanks for the reply, though.

Did you notice on the St. Lawrence County, NY 1850 census (first one Jacob and family are EVER found on) that Jacob and Dorothy cannot read or write? The children are all attending school, James is the oldest (14). The spelling is "De Valle". James is not found again after that census, and after that, Duval/Duvall was cemented in. Prior to that is the KEY to tracking our ANCESTORS farther back than 1836, when Jacob and Dorothy married in Williamsburg. That record was also TRANSCRIBED by someone. I think we need to revisit that, and all other documents of the Duval in Ontario, prior to the Wesleyan records. Those were ministers primarily out of England, who were undoubtedly influencial in establishing the spelling from phonetics, which is subject to accent. By 1836, Seneca was probably already involved in the Morman religion, and therefor, most likely alienated from many family members and friends.

The first Canada census were not until 1851, which is when "Duvall" spelling began...long after Seneca had left the area and in fact he had died 8 years before that in Illinois. The last we know that he was in Upper Canada was in 1838, when his father, Ebenezer died in New York. Since Seneca inherited $300.00 (a great deal of money for the time), he probably left Canada shortly thereafter.
By 1861 It was "Duval".

Seneca came from a family of means and therefore literate. He knew exactly what his customary spelling was, and it followed him on his ample paper trail. Those doing genealogy on the "Duval" in Canada have maintained the habit of referring to Seneca Duel as Seneca Duval, long after Seneca's leanage has been well established.

If Seneca is to be connected to the Ontario Duval/Duvall, then it would seem logical to refer to those in Ontario as "Deuel".

Afterall, who up there in Ontario would be more qualified than Seneca to KNOW the spelling? A change in spelling may have roadblocked the search for heritage.

Hello Don,
In regards to Seneca "Duvall":

Seneca's father is Ebenezer Deuel/many spelling varients. However, I have yet to see any of his ancestors or descendents (except possibly the ones in Ontario)definetly use Duval/Duvall spelling. Perhaps that is why there has been a brickwall in Ontario for well over 30 years of trying to find earlier Duval/Duvall ancestors for those in that area?
By the earliest available Canada Census, they seemed to have settled into using Duval/Duvall...perhaps that is why other spellings have been disregarded as being relevent?
I think it would be productive to re-visit documents in a "new light".

In 1838, Ebenezer left a Will nameing Seneca as his son "living in Upper Canada", and leaving him $300.00. Also mentioned as an inheritor is a grandson Sidney Deuel. Sidney is apparently by a previous marriage to Meribah Briggs. I would like to note here that my gggrandfather was married in Williamsburg 1836 and named his second-born son Charles Sidney Duval. It is possible that Sidney Deuel born before 1813 is the older brother to Jacob Duval born abt. 1810 Canada.

Seneca has quite a paper trail which collaborates on who he is, including Ebenezer stateing Seneca was "married to Elizabeth Crysler, daughter of the UEL".

Seneca is found on Early LDS records, now available online. He died Sept 1843 in Nauvoo, Illinois, just a few years before the Mormans began their trek to Utah. Although Seneca did not make it, his wife Elizabeth, son Orvill, and daughter Agnes did. Also...Elizabeth's mother, Dorothy Myers. Their son, Ebenezer Gorden Deuel, died 1897 in Garden City, Kansas.

There is a new LDS RECORD SEARCH available that pulls up an incredible amount of data that has been unavailable to most until recently. Among that, it uncoveres the mystery of Joseph Duval married to "Ellen unknown". Ellen is Eleanore Beckstead...it is on one of her children's death records...online. Many Beckstead also became Mormans, as well as another related Deuel from New York.

Upper and Lower Canada Marriage Bonds are available to view the images. Seneca's is hard to read, and has been transcribed as Seneca Dull, but his wife and John Crysler's name are very clear.

It has been stated that William Cairs/Carns married Rebecca Duval, but William's marriage bond is very clear...his wife is Rebecca Bradshaw. Rebecca and William are on census records living next door to a Bradshaw family...perhaps it is her brother.

Jump onto RootsWeb and enter Seneca or Ebenezer's name to pull up trees with tons of documented paper trails for that line. It is very interesting. Enjoy!

Thank you so much, Azalea, for your informative reply to my post about Seneca Duvall. I believe you may have a lot more insight into some branches of my family than I do, and I hope you can provide some more help!

My interest in the Duvalls is simply a recent offshoot from my ongoing research into my Mother’s roots in Lunenburg, Ontario. Mom’s parents were Mary Luella Mattice b:1882 and Sam Doran b: 1878. Luella’s parents (my GG parents) were Ephraim Elisha Mattice b: 1842 and Altha Ann Cairns b: 1839. I have a good handle on the Mattice roots, however, as you probably know, the Cairns family is a lot harder to trace.

I have some information on James (Maloy?) Cairns b: 1818, my GGGFather, including census docs as well as his 1839 marriage bond to Eliza Bradshaw and his 1903 Death certificate, as well as the births and marriages of several of his children.

Although I have no solid evidence that William Cairns is the brother (or cousin) of James, I do see a strong tie to my family. William signed James’ Wedding Bond, and their two families lived either together or on the neighbouring property in the 1852 census (next to the Bradshaws). When William died in 1893, his death was reported by Ephraim Elisha Mattice, and the specifics of his Quebec birth in 1807 documented with his death pointed me to his Birth records from the Anglican Cathedral in Quebec and identified Robert Cairns and Mary as his parents.

My interest in the Duvalls first arose when I saw on the 1881 Census in Stormont that 74 yr old William and 78 yr old Rebecca "Karens" were living with a younger James and Margaret Duvall. Wm and Rebecca’s ages and birth places match up with the Cairns’, while the Duvalls were 25 -30 years younger. Who are they, and why are they living together??? Later, in 1891 an 84 yr old "Wm Kearns" is shown on the census as a lodger at the home of my GGFather Ephraim. I do realize that, as you stated, my Wm Cairns married Rebecca Bradshaw (Eliza’s sister??) but several Duvall histories reported that it was Rebecca Duvall who married William Cairns, which pushed me to do a bit more research, uncovering names like Seneca, etc, etc.

So … Azalea, I am only dabbling with the Duvall family and might be eliminating most of them from my database soon, however I am very interested in the Cairns, Bradshaw and Mattice families from Stormont. Any information you have to share, I would welcome. If you are also studying those families, I do have a fair amount of info including family photos I would be willing to send you via email. I look forward to hearing more from you!

Cheers, Don
Another question; in your post re: Edward Duvall, Ky to MO, it says Mrs. Nancy Duvall died in 1858 at Ft. Kearny MO. I have been unsuccessful trying to locate Ft. Kearny, MO. There is a Kearny, MO but it is quite a ways west of Randolph County.
I also found an Edward Davall (with Duvall in parentheses) in the 1850 census, Scott Co, KY with a Nancy Davall and 4 children under age 10, Elizabeth being the youngest at age 2. That would mean that Elizabeth would have been born about 1848, consistent with your post saying they moved to MO with Elizabeth, Andrew, Roger and Marcia.Could the younger children have succumbed to an illness?
