My Dewane (Dwane) ancestors came from Killavilla (Roscrea parish) Tipperary. My ancestors are Denis Dwane and Mary Maher and their 6 children. They emigrated to the US in the mid 1800's. We are trying to identify other Dewane's (Dwane, Divane)

Sherry

My father, John Dwane (b. 1925) was born in County Cork (Bantry). His father was David T. Dwane, who was post master general. All of his brothers, save two, have passed away. Dr. Frank Dwane now lives in Dublin. And David Dwane, my uncle...no grandfather, lives in London, England. I have an aunt, Kay, who is still living...she lives in Dublin. My uncle Tom passed away about 10 years ago and my uncle Eamon passed away about seven years ago.

My father's father was involved in the Easter uprising in the early 20th century. He also wrote a biography of the Éamon de Valera, the former president of Ireland, who he went to school with as a young boy.

My father now lives in Iowa, USA. My brother, Phil, lives in the DC metro area. I (Christopher) live in the St. Louis metro area. I have three sisters, Colleen, Kerri, and Andra who all live in the Midwest of the USA.

Looking for Dwanes of New York Boston etc

I am interested in connecting to any Dwane / Duane families living in the New York / Boston or Philidelphia area, whose ancestors emigrated to the USA from Cork / Limerick Ireland in the ealry 1900's. The only Dwane I know of is William Dwane / Duane, who arrived in New York from Cobh Ireland in the 1920's.His wife was called Lena. They would have been from the Rockchapel area of Cork and Tournafulla area of Limerick. They lived in Flushing, Maspeth New York and are both buried there.
That would make sense because Deglan was himself a member of the 2nd Battalion South Wales Borderers and although he was not at Rorkes Drift his Regiment and members of his battalion were. Deglan died an Army Pensioner in 1899 and I was lucky to find his records at The National Archives which is where I got his place of birth of Youghal in County Cork/Waterford. Its possible they are related but how I dont know, its a relatively unusual name even in Ireland as far as I can make out (from lack of succes in finding any Dwanes!) - but its finding the link in Ireland that would be the problem. I take it from your note that you have not had any luck in tracing your ancestors back to Ireland yet.

Daglan Dwane and Mary dwanwe had a son William John Dwane. He was born in Brilericay 1888. William joined the Army and became a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, South Wales Borderers.

He married in Mar 1914 prior to going to WW1. He was killed 31 Oct 1914 age 26 in the first major battle of the war at Gheluvelt near Ypres, Belgium. His wifes name was Sarah Maud Dwane of 6 Hilda Rd, Moyston Rd, Brixton London. I am sure that he had a son.

I am not sure that Daglan was related to my side of the family. I can trace my Great Great Grandfather John Dwane back to to the general area of Bromley/Mile End London in 1874. My grandfather and William Joseph and his brother John came out to NZ in1910.

His father was Michael Dwane who was a farmer in the area.

My grandfather was Joseph Dwane (John Dwanes son). He came to NZ in 1910.
I am trying to locate descendants of a David Dwane who was Post Master General in Country Cork and Limerick in the early part of the 20th century (1920's, maybe earlier, and later).

My father, John Dwane, was born in Bantry, County Cork in 1925 and his mother's maiden name is O'Connell. David Dwane's other children are Tom, Frank, David, Eamon, Katherine and another boy who died at a young age.

They moved from Bantry to Limerick to Caven (sp?) and eventually Dublin from the 1920's to late 40's.

Any help would be great!

By the way I currently live in Iowa in the United States.

Chris Dwane

Thank you for your message. I do not think that this Michael Dwane is the same one I was referring to.
My Michael went to Aust . around 1882 . I do not know if he married. He could not have a son who got married in 1893.
He died in 1936. He did have a brother , John, who also went to Aust around the same time.
They were from County Cork.I do believe that one of them married but I think it was John.
We may compare notes again.
Tom
