Hi there,

I have some conflicting information.

Joseph Dwiggins b. 1832 and Married to Virginia Maria Thomas was my g-g-grandfather. They had 7 children:

1. Bernard (proper name Joseph Bernard) b. 1855 married to Annie Grove on 4/19/1883.
2. Mary Odilia Dwiggins b. 3/5/1857 married to Joseph Engelmann on 2/12/1890
3. Margaret or Margaretha b. 1861
4. John R. Dwiggins b. 2/23/1866 married to Anna Maria Echele on 2/27/1889.
5. Matilda b. 1868ish
6. James b. 1872ish
7. Albert Joseph Dwiggins b. 4/16/1874 married to Theresa Ida Mae Saucier on 10/18/1899 (He is my g-grandfather).
----------------------------------------------------------

Joseph was the son of Elijah Dwiggins and Elizabeth Howard from Frankton, IN. Joseph and 2 of his brothers left IN for CA in search of gold but 2 of them landed in the Portage des Sioux area after their barge sunk crossing the Mississippi River.

Elijah Dwiggins is the son of John C. Dwiggins, JR who was married to Margaret Ring from NC. Elijah was one of 13 children for them.

From there it is under some dispute who the father of John C. Dwiggins, Jr is. Is he the Robert Dwiggins/Lidia Hunt offspring, or the son of John Dwiggins/Spouse Unknown? Both resided in NC, and the county names escapes me at the moment. I presume the latter, but that's my opinion.

Thanks, Dave
This is very helpful. I am researching the Dwiggins family (Robert b. 1770 d. 1856, married to Martha Crews, son of John Dwiggins d. 1815) in Stokes and Rowan counties in NC. I have also been researching the Maryland families to make the connection.

I would love to talk with your son about his research and how he got "across the pond" (found the records in England).

Maxine (Dwiggins) Neff 1917-2012

DELRAY BEACH, FLA. – A private family memorial will be held at a later date for Maxine Alice (Dwiggins) Neff, 94, who passed away Jan. 19, 2012.

Maxine was born March 1, 1917, in Denver, Colorado to William Addison and Mary (McMillan) Dwiggins.

Because Maxine’s father was a federal meat inspector, the family moved a lot and so as a youth, Maxine lived, and attended school, in Denver, Topeka, Detroit, Wheeling, West Virginia and Chicago.
She also spent summers in Arthur, Nebraska, and Denver and Topeka, where she visited her grandparents and extended family.

Maxine had many interesting family stories. Her grandfather, Cyrus Dwiggins, fought for the Union in the Civil War and participated in Sherman’s March to the Sea. Ironically, when he came home, he married Alice Jones Campbell, the widow of a Confederate.
As a young girl, Maxine’s grandmother, Alice, was held-up by the famous western outlaw, Jesse James.
Her grandmother, Mary (Sebille) McMillan came from France and in America married Maxine’s grandfather, John Boone McMillan, a circuit rider.
Together the family traveled and moved throughout the western states, finally settling in the Sandhills of Nebraska.

After Maxine’s graduation from Lakeshore High School in Chicago, the Dwiggins family moved to Columbus, Ohio where in 1939 Maxine (Dwiggie) received a B.S. in Education from the Ohio State University.
She taught business education in Adena, Ohio, before marrying Robert Neff on Dec. 21, 1940, in Toronto, Ohio. They made their home in Columbus, while Bob traveled for Sheaffer Pen Co.

In 1941, Robert was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and Naval duty took them to Norfolk, Va., where Maxine worked as a clerk-typist for the government and as a volunteer making battle dressings. By the end of the war, they had been transferred to Sampson Naval Base and were living in Geneva, N.Y.

At the end of World War II, Bob and Maxine made Canfield, Ohio (Mahoning County) their permanent residence until the early 1980s when they became Florida residents and made their home at Sea Fields Club in Delray Beach.
Canfield continued to be their summer home.

Maxine and her husband developed land in Ohio and Florida and formed the Neff Land Company and four other land development corporations. Maxine served as Vice-President and Secretary to these corporations for many years.

Among Bob and Maxine’s many gifts to the community, were the donation of the Eagle Cabin at Camp Stambaugh for the Boy Scouts, the purchase of the building and grounds for the War Vet Museum, and funding of various Ohio State Markers and Village Green Park projects.

Maxine was a Delta Zeta alumna and a member of Sleepy Hollow and Periwinkle Garden Clubs.
She was a former Girl Scout Leader and a Braille translator. She also belonged to the Salem Golf Club, Gyros and the Canfield United Methodist Church.
Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, needlework, reading and crosswords.

Maxine loved to travel. In March of 1958, she had her first flying experience, and wore a big button that said, “Who, Me Fly?” In a letter she wrote, “So in one day, 13 hours, we were able to travel over 2,500 miles and our actual traveling hours were only eight. Isn’t that remarkable?” Since then Maxine has been able to visit all of the seven continents but Antarctica.

She enjoyed life to the fullest and always looked forward to more.

She was the beloved wife of Robert Neff for 70 years before he died in July of 2011.

She will be lovingly remembered by three daughters, Jennifer Neff of Canfield, Ohio, Holly (Gordon) Broom of Edwardsville, Ill., and Candace Neff of Lantana, Florida.

An infant son preceded her in death.

She also leaves seven treasured grandchildren, Mary Alexis (Hank) Mathews of Louisville, Ky., George (Chandler) Fiffick of Chicago, Max (Amy) Fiffick of Kernersville, N.C., Ben (Amy) Broom of Fortville, Ind., Becky Broom of Delray Beach, Joe (Jessica) Broom of Frisco, Colo., and Anastasia Neff of Lantana.

Her nine great-grandchildren will miss her greatly. They are Aaron, Joan and Adam Mathews, George Fiffick, Sam and Isabella Fiffick and Grace, Max and Claire Broom.

Her sister, Geraldine Olive (Ross) Kitchen of Darien, Conn., was also born on March 1, four years earlier than Maxine.
Geraldine passed away in 2006, leaving one daughter, Marta Kitchen Schieffer of Connecticut.

Maxine is also survived by her sister-in-law, Gwen (Richard) Neff of Jackson, Ohio. She leaves a large extended family and many friends. Her nephew, Bruce (Clara) Neff resides in Canfield, OH.

Respecting the wishes of the deceased, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests it would be an honor to have contributions made to the charity of your choice.

The Wasko Funeral Home in Campbell is making arrangements

Mahoning

My name is Linda Franklin. My father, Earl S. "Cowboy", and Dick were brothers. I am a newby to the genealogy research family so I was excited to find this information. My father married Clara E. Church and they lived in the Stith community for many years. Cowboy passed away in December of 1956 and is buried in Slaton, Texas. I have one sister, Clara Frances McGehee and she has four sons. Any information you can provide me for Uncle Dick's and Daddy's siblings will be greatly appreciated. I would also be interested to know additional history for either Dwiggins or Bridges families.

I don't know if you are still searching for information on Agnes Dwiggins Mason, but I have some. Mother of 10 children. I have some information on quite a few of the children. We have believed that she was the mother of Lucinda (Monte) Mason, who married George Ormsby, but are having a hard time connecting that. I believe she may have been taken in by the Masons because she was a relative.

Well....what happened to Elijah and and Elizabeth Howard Dwiggins?? and their children?? How about John C Dwiggins who was married to Margaret Ring and their children. John Walker Dwiggins is our side of the Dwiggins, who married Mary Josephine Mintert, and his father was John Joseph Dwiggins and Ellen McGinnis as well.
I am pretty sure Rebecca's maiden name was Knott...sisters I think married brothers, I don't have my book handy, but I am pretty sure Rebecca was Rebecca Knott, I will look it up and get back with you.
Betty

Re: Port of Entry

According to my son's research, Dwiggins is a Anglicized version of the ancient Irish name "Duibhghinn," which has variously been modified as Dwigin, Dwiggin, Deegan, Duigan or Dugan.

The first Dwiggins in the United States was likely Roger Dwiggin of Ireland, who was listed in Maryland in 1670:

http://www.combs-families.org/combs/records/md/stmarys/stcle...

Maryland at that time was a haven for Irish in the new world, both Lord Baltimore and Thomas Gerrard being sympathetic to Catholics.

In the 1659 Census of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell, the name "Dwiggin" or "Dwigin" turns up in several places.

Here is a reference to a Roger Dwiggin among those whose land was taken away by Cromwell:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcnn/Data_Tables/certifi...

Here is a reference to a John Dwigin petitioning the Duke of Ormond in 1667:

http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/projects/carte/carte4...

So the first Dwiggins likely came to America as Catholic exiles, but perhaps owing to the lack of an organized Church in America soon became Protestant, if they had not converted already.

I am looking for info on Ira Dwiggins, son of Daniel and Sarah Knott Dwiggins. I am researching the Reuben Kelly family. Reuben moved to Indiana from (West) Virginia, and later moved from Madison Co. IN to Clark Co. MO. His probate record in Clark Co. MO lists among his heirs, Alfred Dwiggins and Sarah Jane Mitchel, children of Reuben's daughter Mary "Polly" Kelly, deceased.
I found a story in an Ancestry family tree which stated that Ira Dwiggins possibly had children named Alfred and Jane from a previous marriage before he married Sarah Hulda Laughner.
Does anyone have information on a marriage between Ira Dwiggins and Mary "Polly" Kelly? Alfred was born around 1850 and Sarah Jane was b. around 1857. Mary Kelly Dwiggins apparently died before 1860 because Jane Dwiggins was living in the household of Mary's sister, Elizabeth and Jasper Miller of Madison Co. IN in the 1860 census.
Alfred Dwiggins married Mary C. Cummins in 1872 in Madison Co. but he was a widower on the 1880 census, living in the household of his father-in-law. Another source thought he was divorced. Does anyone know what happened to Alfred Dwiggins or Sarah Jane Dwiggins Mitchel?
Thanks for any help.

Reed, I came across an Ancestry family tree for the Daniel Dwiggins and Sarah Knott family of Madison Co. Indiana. For their son Ira there is a story posted which states that Ira married around 1850 and had two children named Alfred and Jane, and then he married Sarah Laughner and had several more children. Little was known about his first marriage, and some even thought the older two children might have been Sarah's before their marriage. Surely Ira was the Dwiggins married to Mary Kelly. I've sent an email to the person who posted the tree, but I wanted to let you know about it, too, in case you hadn't found the info and wanted to check out the story. I'm still plugging away on Reuben's line, finding a few more bits and pieces. Hope to have it ready to post online soon.
Thanks again for all the work you've done on Reuben's line.

The two James Dwiggins in Muskingum you mentioned in your posts are one and the same. Hannah (Unknown) Dwiggins, his mother, is seen in the household of James and Malinda in 1860. In 1850, James is listed twice in the census. Once in his mother's household and the next month in his household with his wife. You'll notice that all 3 census entries list him as a Cooper and born in Pennsylvania. I have other family members that showed up in the census twice. Once in their homes, and once in their place of employment or visiting relatives nearby. It usually happens when the census took longer than a few days to collect the information in an area.

Re: Elijah Dwiggins b. 1805

According to the 1860 census, John Dwiggins was 31 years; so I would put his birth in 1829.

Elijah Dwiggins b. 1805 is indeed John's father. Some info about Elijah:
He married Elizabeth Howard (I think in 1824-can't find all my notes). In 1833, Elijah scouted the area Pipe Creek Township (Frankton, IN) and in 1837 opened the first general store in the area. In the early 1800’s, the Dwiggins were an influential family in the area. Cousin Daniel was a captain for the Union Army during the Civil War, and several other Dwiggins’ are known to be soldiers.
I do not know yet what year Elijah died, or where he is buried.

Elijah and Elizabeth had several children, including John and his brother Joseph (who is my gggrandfather). Around 1849, Joseph and 2 brothers left Indiana for California. They got stuck in Missouri when their boat sank and they lost their horses while crossing the Mississippi River. John stayed in MO, Joseph returned to IN, and the 3rd brother continued on to CA. Joseph returned to MO to join his brother, and they are both listed in the 1860 census as farmers in Portage Des Sioux Township, St. Charles Co., MO. Nothing was heard of the brother that continued on to CA until he returned to MO several years later dying of tuberculosis.

The 1860 census lists John, wife Ellen (born in OH), children Solomon, James M., and Francis B. I may have more info on John and his life in Portage des Sioux, MO somewhere around here. I visited the area not long ago and got records from the local church. I also have information on Elijah's father, who coincidentally is named John.
Feel free to contact me at davdwi@hotmail.com

Dave and Thelma, Elijah Dwiggins may also be a ggggrandfather. I am looking for the father of John Dwiggins from Indiana b. 1829/30 and his wife is Ellen McGinnis. My ggrandmother was Sarah Ellen Dwiggins. Her father was James Monroe Dwiggins b 1857 St. Charles, Missouri. And his father was John Dwiggins mentioned above. Does any of this sound familiar.
Alfred Dwiggins was living with his father in law in 1880 Alexandria, Madison Co., IN. I think his name was spelled Duiginns or something like that. His wife died in May 1880.
Reuben Kelly's estate papers mentioned Reuben Jr. and Isaac as sons. I believe Reuben Jr was the one who married Mary Catherine Haskett. I don't have all the estate papers for Reuben, so I am not 100% sure. Same for Isaac Kelly.

Thanks so much.

I did not see Alfred Dwiggins in the 1880 census of Madison Co. IN, however there is a Mary Dwiggins who was listed as divorced. Is she Mary Cummins?

I found your posting on the IN GenWeb for the descendants of Reuben Kelly. Did his estate papers also mention his children Reuben and Isaac which you posted on the GenWeb site? I haven't been able to prove they were Reuben's children, either. A descendant of the Isaac Kelly b. 1812 in VA who lived in IN (Madison or Randolph Co. - can't remember which) thought that he was not the son of Reuben, but I can't recall now the reason.

I was able to trace young Reuben's family through later censuses, but once again was unable to prove his relationship to Jacob's son, Reuben. There are several Reuben Kelly's floating around out there, and I've been unable to find documentation that Reuben who died in MO in 1868 was the son of Reuben who died in Clark Co. MO in 1861. Do you know if the estate papers establish that he is the right one?

Thanks again for all your work, and for making it available to others.

It has been almost 8 years since I posted the message and I'm not sure where the file is right now. Someone sent me a few pages of the estate papers. I believe the probate pages are numerous for Reuben Kelly. It took several years for it to settle. The Alfred Dwiggins who married Mary Cummins is the child of Mary Kelly Dwiggins.

Reed Morrow

Does anyone have any information on Ensign Nathan Dwiggins, lst LT. James Dwiggins, or Corporal Danl Dwiggins or Corporal Saml Dwiggins . I believe that Daniel and Samuel may have been sons of Joseph Dwiggins who died in 1775 Caroline Co. MD and is listed as Liber 120 Folio 301. Does anyone know how to obtain the information from these records listed in the Maryland Archives??

James and Ann Dwiggins ca1702-1767

Could Ann have been Ann Leverton since she and James were adminstrators of John Leverton's estate in Queen Anne MD in 1764? Also where could I find information on Liber 55 Folio 291 in Queen Anne MD archives for 1767. Believe this may be the will of James Dwiggins, son of John Dwiggins and Sarah who married St Peters Parish Talbott Co MD in 1702.

Daniel Dwiggins 1830 Guernsey Co. Census

I believe that Daniel was the son of James Dwigan 1810 Washington Co. PA Census. I believe that Daniel m. Hannah unknown and had two sons, James and Stephen. I believe that Daniel died before 1840 and Hannah moved to Muskingum Co. and is listed in the 1840 Census with two males 15-20 and a female 100 (she is listed on the 1830 Census with Daniel, 80-90 female.) I believe that James Dwiggins listed on Muskingum Co. 1850 Census with Malinda (Dowell) was the son of James Dwigan of Washington Co. PA 1810 Census and is listed on 1830 as male 10-15. Does anyone have the 1837 Will for James Dwigan that lists his children?
