Re: Land patent to Thomas Dyas & others, 1684, Nansemond County, Virginia

There was a DYAS family who lived in Co Meath, Ireland. William DYAS had a son David DYAS, said by descendants to have been born at Kells, Co Meath, ca 1787.
David DYAS married, probably in Dublin, about 1809, Frances PIGOTT, and they had 4 children born in Ireland before emigrating to America in 1817.
It is alleged that they were "forced" to emigrate to avoid prosecution for breaches of anti-popery statutes, in particular, it is said, for assisting a Catholic Priest through the Irish countryside. He must have been a meddlesome Priest to have caused his "helpers" to risk ending up in court.
Another side to this somewhat implausible story is the assertion that Frances PIGOTT had been a "Lady-in-Waiting" to the wife of George III, & had used her connections to the Queen to evade the authorities and make good their escape.
Although the 4 Dyas children born in Ireland did carry a swag of Royal names among them - including William, Frederick, George, Catherine, Sophia & Amelia - not that that would have been all that uncommon at the time.
But I remain sceptical.

The DYAS family firstly resided in Virginia, then moved to St Louis, Missouri, before settling in Bellevue, Iowa. There are numbers of descendants living in the U.S. today.

My own interest is in Frances PIGOTT - she named her second son John Pigott DYAS, which suggests that may be the as yet undiscovered name of her father, probably Irish. She had three siblings who also went to America between 1817 & 1820 - brothers John & William PIGOTT, & sister Gertrude (later Mrs PEARCE), who all settled in St Louis, Missouri.

Chris PIGOTT, Potts Point, N.S.W.

Dyas in Kings County (Offaly), Ireland

I'm interested in learning more about the Dyas family who lived in Ballyboy/Frankford, Co. Offaly, Ireland in the 19th century.

Jane Dyas, from Frankford, was married in Ballyboy Church in 1848. Her father Thomas is described as a shopkeeper. One of the witnesses was John Dyas.

Does anyone have links to the family?

Hi,

I came across this message board while researching for things about Sabin Tanner. I'm his great-grandaughter. My name is Rachille Tanner Rusche. His son Joseph Tanner who died in 1978 is my grandfather and his son Joseph Sabin Tanner is my father. I knew he was from Nebraska and he had a sister named Clara. His wife's name was Lillian. I would really appreciate any information you could help me with. I don't know much about this side of the family. I did know Lillian but she never spoke of him and she died when I was 15, so I never really got a chance to ask her. Most of their children have passed on now and I'm having a hard time locating the last remaining sons.

Felicia,

Unfortunately, I do not know who Moses Dyas siblings were. But, I do know a few things. I do know that before settling in Illinois, Moses and his wife lived in Nova Scotia for a little bit I believe. Also, I do know a few kids Moses and his wife Elizabeth had. Their children's names were Margaret, Elizabeth, John, Jane, and Caroline.

Furthermore, I can tell you that Moses and his wife lived just down the street from Elizabeth
s sister, Alice and her husband Peter Michel. They lived in Shabbona, IL. I can also tell you that both Moses and his wife are buried down at the Old English Cemetary just outside Shabbona (this is the same cemetary where Elizabeth's sister Alice is buried). Unfortunately, niether Moses nor his wife Elizabeth had an obituary that was recorded with Shabbona (as I have extensively tried to look for it). Furthermore, their gravestones only provide us the death year. Moses' gravestone said he lived from 1800-1882 will Elizabeth lived from 1809-1870.

I am sorry this does not help more.

But, I myself have been struggling with my grandmother, Alice's line as well, trying to find where in Ireland she came from. I thought if I knew where Moses and his wife were from I could know where she was from.

How are you related to Moses Dyas?

I'm trying to see is any info you have might tie my Dyas family to yours. If indeed there is a connection, a brick wall I have been staring at would be starting to come down. Here's hoping.....

Felicia

I would appreciate any information on the McKissick line as mine is very limited. My family are not great ones for information and we are in Australia, well away from the action. I have a family tree on Ancestry or you can email me direct allant@mac.com

Thanks Allan

hi Allan .I think my grandfather John McKissick is your greatgrandmother Sarahs brother. I've just been through the 1911 Irish census and found them in Boyne Sq. up until then I didn't even know Sarahs husbands name or occupation( he was a butcher). We had wondered what happened to their children my mum Lily who is 92 always said Sarah was very beautiful.the cencus has six children 3 living. I know next to nothing about the Dyas's but quite a bit about Sarah's McKissicks i would love to hear from you sorry this is a bit ramling its been a long day. Carrie

Michael

I have Edward's parents as Edward Dyas and Sarah Woosman (married Jan 23, 1809 in Great Hanwood).

Martha Rogers' parents were John Rogers (butcher) and Martha Martin (b. Oct 5, 1807 in Fish St., d. Feb 13, 1870) m. Jul 15, 1800 in Madeley.

Edward and Martha had a son Edward (b. Jan 2, 1842 in Fish St, d. Jun 11, 1891 at 233 Shankhill Rd, Belfast) He married Martha Jane Morton (b. Sep 1, 1841 at 11 Sandy Lane, Astonon Aug 11, 1862 at St Clements, Aston, d. Jan 9, 1901 at 29 Churchill St, Belfast).

Their children are Ellen (b. ~1864), Edward W. (b. ~1866), Alice (b.~1868), Frank Morton (b. Mar 1, 1871, Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury; d. Feb 28, 1915 at 60 Boyne Square, Belfast ), Beatrice (b.~1878), Clara Jane Morrton (d.1875)

Frank married (Feb 17, 1896, Fisherwick Presb, Belfast) Sarah McKissick (b. Dec 30, 1873, d. Feb 26, 1929 - both Belfast).

Their children are: Alice Morton (b. Jan 18, 1896, d. Jul 3, 1914); Sarah Morton (b. Sep 2,1897; d. Apr 13,1973); Frank (b. Jan 25,1899 d. Jun 12, 1899), Edward (b. ~May,1900)

Sarah Morton Dyas (my grandmother) married Thomas Todd on Mar 3, 1923 in St John's Belfast.

Their children are: Ruby (b. Jul 16, 1923) ; my Dad, Thomas (Aug 23, 1925, d. Jun 8, 2001); Edward (b. Feb 21, 1928; d. Jul 8, 2001)

Edward and Martha moved from Shrewsbury to Belfast sometime between the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

The Dyas's, at least on my line, don't seem to have had great longevity. I have a photo of my grandmother (Sarah Morton Dyas) and my Dad and his brother and sister, but that's probably about all.

Do you have anything to add to this?

Allan

I believe you are referring to the Edward and Martha Dyas of Butcher's Row, Shrewsbury. They are also my g.g grandparents (i.e. Edward Dyas and Martha Jane Morton). Their son Frank morton Dyas is my grandfather, his daughter Sarah Morton Dyas being my father's mother.

Edward and Martha moved to Belfast between 1881 and 1901.

Of course if you mean Edward and Martha nee Rogers, then go back one generation.

A Thomas Dyas or Dias and wife Jane are in Somerset Co., Maryland in 1672 registering cattle & tobacco. Is this the same Thomas DYAS who was previously in Virginia?

A Thomas DIAS or DYAS patent 1200a on 15 Apr 1664 in Westmoreland Co.,VA. (1632a was survey on 1 Mar 1665 for Thomas DEAL probably DYAS). This Thomas DYAS or DIAS of Rappahannock on 27 Feb 1669/1670 deeded 60 or 70 acres of land in Westmoreland to my George South. What is the relationship between my George d.1700 and wife Isabella SOUTH (or his father George d.1672 and mother Elizabeth SOUTH) to Thomas DIAS or DYAS?

26 April 1687 a Thomas Dyas & Walter Price received a land patent in Nansemond Co., Virginia (patent Bk 7, pg. 392). Is this the same Thomas DIAS?

Any help in findng the relationship between my George SOUTH and Thomas DYAS or DIAS would be appreciated.
